A
The sun rises above the Arctic Ocean(北冰洋). Across the frozen sea, a white bear moves slowly.
The bear stops and sways (摇晃) his head from side to side. There is nothing to see but endless ice and red sky. Then his powerful nose senses what his eyes cannot: a beluga whale is nearby.
The bear follows the smell and spots a large hole in the ice where a small white whale is swimming. He silently walks toward the hole, then stops, standing still. The whale does not see the bear, whose white fur makes him appear invisible against the ice.
Finally, the whale swims close to where the bear is waiting. With terrifying speed, the bear comes to life and moves toward the whale. In a moment it is over, and the bear eats his first meal in nearly a week.
Polar bears rule the frozen sea, but their ancestors (祖先) weren't always built for ice and snow. The first Arctic bears were brown bears, a species that includes grizzly bears. They came to the icy north over a hundred thousand years ago.
No one knows for sure why these bears traveled to such a cold place. Scientists think they might have wandered north looking for food. Maybe they became trapped by glaciers (冰川) and couldn't leave. Whatever the reason, the bears never should have survived.
But they did. They got used to their new environment. Their bodies changed. Their behavior changed, too. Eventually, the bears developed into an entirely new species: the polar bear. You can see some of the characteristics that polar bears developed to survive.
Sadly, these characteristics may now threaten the polar bear's survival. As sea ice melts due to global warming, polar bears are frequently forced to come ashore. They are poor hunters on land, which means they often go a long time between meals. The polar bear, king of the Arctic, is now classified as a threatened species.
Although the future of the polar bear is unknown, the tale of two bears continues. As temperatures rise, grizzly bears have been spotted moving north into polar bear territory (领地). These long lost cousins, once forced apart by nature, are coming back together again.

Standing 20 feet from a lion, Charles Tshuma was armed with just a horn.He and some neighbors kept blowing their horns and shouting and screaming until the lion turned away and walked slowly back into Hwange National Park, leaving Tshuma's community. It's not always so easy, said Tshuma.“Sometimes people in the village do not want to join in, choosing instead to lock themselves indoors,” he said.
That is the life of Zimbabwe's lion guards, brave community members selected and trained to prevent attacks on humans and cattle by big cats from the unfenced (无围墙的) Hwange National Park.
The killing of Cecil the lion near Hwange National Park caused international outrage. It caused the largest reaction in the history of wildlife conservation. But the biggest threat to Hwange's lions comes from conflicts with surrounding cattle farmers, researchers say.
Oxford University's Lions Research Project has tracked and studied over 30 lion families in its 15 years here. Seeing many attacks by lions wandering out of the park, the researchers in 2007 created the Long Shields program.Since then, there has been a 40 percent decrease in the number of conflicts. Many of Hwange's lions have collars (项圈) with satellite tracking devices so the researchers can inform surrounding villages when and where lions have left the park.
“We certainly know that the program has actually been able to drive away some lions from the community back into the park,”said Lovelater Sedede, an ecologist, but she warns:“Lions running away from the sound of horns do not totally solve the problem.Lions could get used to it and thus there is a need for more research methods to fight lion and human conflict.”
The surrounding communities are pleased with the results.“We have noticed that the challenges from lions have gone down ... our animals are protected and the lions are kept away,”said Vincent Mangenyo, a local leader.

China is the only place in the world where pandas still live in the wild. The panda survey counted the total number of pandas living in the Chinese countryside at almost 1,600 — nearly 50 percent more than the 1,000 to 1,100 pandas found in the last survey, in the late 1980s. Although the news is encouraging, scientists are quick to point out that pandas, which have become the universal symbol of endangered species, are still threatened with extinction and need protection.
With pandas and many other species, survival depends on staying hidden from people and predators (食肉动物), so counting them can be hard. More important than the number of pandas is_how to protect them and the places they live in.
Scientists made the panda survey, sponsored (赞助) by World Wildlife Fund and the Chinese government, by combining the best of 21st century technology with old fashioned low?tech tracking (跟踪) skills. Counting pandas through the forest and up mountains, using their powers of observation to note a bit of panda fur left on the bark of a tree, a panda paw print in the mud, or ... panda droppings! Panda locations were entered into global positioning system (全球定位系统) instruments to create maps of habitats that should be protected.
Of all the clues left by the pandas, researchers depended most heavily on the animals' droppings. Pandas eat up 80 pounds of bamboo a day, and because bamboo is difficult to digest, it remains the chew patterns of individual pandas even after digestion. Chinese researchers have determined that individual pandas have different average bite sizes, so by measuring the average bite size of the bamboo pieces in the droppings collected, survey teams were able to determine the number of pandas that produced the droppings left behind in each area.
语篇解读:怎样才能查出野生大熊猫的准确数量呢?本文介绍了科学家们采用的一些科学方法。
1.From the underlined sentence in Para.2 we know that ________.
A.the number of pandas is not important at all
B.it's not necessary to count the wild pandas
C.how to protect the pandas and the places they live in is not a problem when counting the wild pandas
D.to protect the pandas and the places they live in must be well considered when counting the wild pandas
解析:选D 句意理解题。句子的意思是“比大熊猫数量更为重要的是如何保护它们及它们的栖息地”,这就是说大熊猫的数量很重要,但是在调查时要注意保护它们及它们的栖息地。
2.Which of the following is NOT the clue for the survey
A.The fur. B.The paw print.
C.The droppings. D.The bamboo.
解析:选D 细节理解题。在调查大熊猫的数量时,科学家们要“... note a bit of panda fur left on the bark of a tree, a panda paw print in the mud, or ... panda droppings”,因为这些东西是调查大熊猫踪迹的重要线索。
3.Why can the scientists determine the number of pandas by the bamboo they have eaten
A.Because every panda eats up different pounds of bamboo every day.
B.Because every panda has a different bite size from another.
C.Because bamboo is hard to digest.
D.Because a panda eats up 80 pounds of bamboo every day.
4.The best title for the passage may be ________.

In places like California, the Rocky Mountains, and the Southern United States, wildfires are an unavoidable reality.
Wildfires can cause damage to property and human life, but they have many beneficial effects on native vegetation, animals and ecosystems that have evolved with fire. The forests, including pine barrens, lodgepole pine forests and many more, require fires to reproduce because the trees in the forest are adapted to only producing seeds following a major fire event. Therefore, without them many of these forest types would decline.
A fire renews the watershed (集水区) in ways including, but not limited to, recycling of nutrients, increasing food sources for fish in streams, supplement (补充) to stream side vegetation, spread of fire adapted plants, etc. Not to mention renewal of the soil chemistry which is vital to the forest and the watershed. The basis is that of someone who has studied wildfires and streams since the 1988 Yellowstone wildfires. The science backs up how natural wildfires can be favorable through research publication after publication.
It's like “resetting the clock” on the ecosystem, allowing it to function smoothly all over again for another 200 years. By the way, a stand burning fire such as the Yellowstone fires of 1988 also results in the landscape of younger forest mends which act to reduce the spread of future wildfires and can stop a major wildfire in its tracks.
The bottom line is that we may need today's natural wildfires to prevent more serious catastrophic fire events in the future. That lesson was learned in Yellowstone in 1988 which was a year of disastrous large scale fires after more than 50 years of fire suppression (压制).
语篇解读:本文主要讲述了野火对生态系统的益处。
5.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.Seeds. B.Wildfires.
C.Trees. D.Ecosystems.
解析:选B 代词指代题。本文主要讲述了野火对生态系统的好处,根据第二段中的“The forests, including pine barrens, lodgepole pine forests and many more, require fires to reproduce ...”可知,森林需要火来繁殖,结合画线词所在句的内容可知,此处应指没有野火的话,这些森林类型中的大多数将会减少。
6.What can we know about wildfires' benefits to the watershed
A.Wildfires benefit the watershed in over 5 ways.
B.Plants along streams spread faster after wildfires.
C.Renewal of the soil chemistry is the most important.
D.The benefits are supported by the author's research.
解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“A fire renews the watershed (集水区) in ways including ... Not to mention renewal of the soil chemistry”可知,野火更新(森林地带的)集水区的方式包括但不局限于文中提到的这五种,故A项正确。
7.What is the function of younger forest mends
A.Disturb the development of wildfires.
B.Reduce occurring rates of wildfires.
C.Represent life and hope after wildfires.
D.Make wildfires easier to be spotted.
解析:选A 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“a stand burning fire such as the Yellowstone fires of 1988 also results in the landscape of younger forest mends which act to reduce the spread of future wildfires and can stop a major wildfire in its tracks”可知,野火可以催生树龄小一些的森林来填补大火之后的空地,这些树龄小一些的森林可以减缓将来发生的大火蔓延的速度,阻止大火的进程,故选A项。
8.What should we learn from the 1988 Yellowstone wildfires
A.Small wildfires add up to larger scale wildfires.
B.We should let nature take its course completely.
C.Yellowstone's fire prevention was proved successful.
D.Strict control over wildfires may work destructively.
PAGE

2013 was a record breaking year for rhinoceroses — but not in a good way. That year, a total of 1,004 rhinos were poached (illegally hunted) in South Africa, the country where almost all of the world's rhinos live. That's an increase of more than 50 percent from 2012 — when 668 rhinos were killed. It was also the most South African rhinos killed in one year.
“The world's rhinos are facing great danger,” says Dr. Naomi Doak of TRAFFIC, a conservation group that works to stop the trafficking (buying and selling) of wildlife.
The rise in poaching is due to an increasing demand for rhino horns in Asian countries such as Vietnam and China, where the horns are used as key ingredients in traditional Asian medicines. Some people believe taking ground up rhino horn can help treat pain, fevers, and cancer (though these uses have not been medically proven to be effective). The demand is so great that rhino horns can sell for more than D|S30,000 a pound in Asia.
Poaching has already had extremely serious results for rhinos. The Western black rhino became extinct in the last ten years. The Javan rhinoceros has almost completely disappeared from Vietnam, with fewer than 50 remaining. Now, African black rhinos and white rhinos are facing disaster. The black rhino is listed as “highly endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Fewer than 5,000 exist. White rhinos are considered “near threatened”, with about 20,150 in the wild.
Many nations are now taking steps to protect rhinos. The governments of several countries have signed agreements to fight rhino poaching by making the sale of rhino horns illegal, catching poachers and smugglers (走私者),and increasing public awareness about the problem.
South Africa has signed agreements with Vietnam and China to fight wildlife trafficking between the countries. It is developing similar agreements with Mozambique,Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia.

“Once there was the Stone Age, then the Bronze Age, and now we are in the middle of the Plastic Age,” said teenager Boyan Slat. “Every year, we produce 300 million tons of plastic. Much of it reaches our oceans.”
At the age of 16, Boyan Slat scuba dived off Greece in the Mediterranean Sea seeing more rubbish floating on and under the surface. He said, “At first, I thought I was swimming through strange jellyfish. Instead, I swam through more plastic bags than fish.” Seeing all the ocean trash, he asked himself,“Why not clean it up?”
Slat quit his Aerospace Engineering studies to create www. in order to fund his research on how to pick up all the plastic trash floating on the oceans of the world. Researchers discovered that 46, 000 pieces of plastic float on every square mile of the oceans, produced by billions of humans around the planet throwing their plastic into rivers, streams and directly into the oceans. What's worse, plastic does not break down.
Today, we find plastic in the tissue of about every creature in the oceans. Additionally, millions of tons of plastic gather in giant ocean going garbage patches (垃圾带). You may Google “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch”. It grows from 60 to 90 feet deep in places. It kills millions of sea birds, turtles, sharks, dolphins and whales.
Being a brilliant, innocent teenager, Boyan Slat decided to construct designs of some equipment that would collect millions of tons of plastic floating on our oceans. He created a solar powered trawler (拖网渔船) to pick up surface plastic, chew it up and store it in huge bins for collection. He also created floating booms (挡栅) that allow the oceans to sweep the plastic for efficient pick up. When you see the designs, they will blow your mind.
Boyan Slat stands at the head of his class in creating solutions for the folly of humans. If ever humans need leaders to stand up and be counted, we need more people like Boyan Slat to lead us out of damaging our planet home towards a biologically healthy future.

Although similar in appearance to hyenas (土狼), African wild dogs are nevertheless true wild canines (犬). They are a mixture of black, yellow, and white in such a wide variety of patterns that no two individuals look exactly alike. African wild dogs are widely distributed across the African plains but they do not live in jungle areas.
They are social animals, living in groups of usually from 2 to 45 individuals. A hierarchy (统团) exists within the group, but the animals are friendly to one another. The young and the infirm (体弱的) are given special privileges within the group.
African wild dogs use their sense of sight, not smell, to find their prey. They can run up to 55 km/h for several kilometers. In eastern Africa, they mostly hunt Thomson's gazelles, but they will also attack calves, warthogs, zebras, impalas, and the young of large antelopes such as the gnu.
Growing human populations have decreased or degraded the African wild dog's habitat and also diminished their available prey. Road kill and human persecution (迫害) have also had a negative impact on African wild dog populations. This species is also susceptible to a variety of diseases such as distemper, which is controlled in domestic dogs.Conservation of the African wild dog's natural habitat must have the highest priority, as these dogs suffer in habitats modified by human intrusion (干扰).
