In most languages, a greeting is usually followed by “small talk”. Small talk means the little things we talk about at the start of a conversation. In English speaking countries people often make small talk about the weather:“Nice day, isn't it?”“Terrible weather, isn't it?”
But there is something special about small talk. It must be something which both people have the same opinion about. The purpose of small talk is to let both people agree on something. This makes meeting people easier and more comfortable. People usually agree about the weather, so it is a safe topic for small talk. But people often disagree about religion or politics so these are not suitable topics for small talk in English. The topics for small talk also depend on where the conversation is taking place. At football matches, people make small talk about the game they are watching:“Great game, isn't it?” At bus stops, people may comment about the transport system:“The bus service is terrible, isn't it?”
Greetings and small talk are an important part of conversation in any language. The way people greet each other and the things they talk about, however, may be different from one language to another. This shows that there is much more to learn when we learn a language than just the vocabulary and the grammar of the language. We also have to learn the social behavior of the people who speak it.

Trying to find a safe place after too many earthquakes and aftershocks and the death of my dear husband, I sold my little farm in Canterbury, New Zealand, and moved north to Blenheim with my three elderly Labradors, three ancient cats and six doves.
The place I bought appeared reasonably priced, quiet and safe for the animals. I moved in, but that was the moment of truth.
It had been left filthy. There were large holes in walls where heaters and shelves had been removed, and illegal plumbing (管道) and wiring. The small house was filled with rubbish and the log burner full of ashes. The fence was partly burnt and the irrigation (灌溉) system was damaged. All the firewood had been removed.
After a busy day moving in and cleaning. I touched a switch in the bathroom, thinking it was for the lights. Unluckily, it was for an illegally wired spa bath and it tripped the circuit (电路), leaving the house in total darkness. I had not yet located a torch or phone, and boxes were all over the place. All I could do was lie on the bed and shiver (颤抖) through that long, very cold winter night.
At first light, I took my dogs for a walk along the nearby riverbank and met several other dog walkers who were chatting while their dogs played nearby. Allison, Fay and Colin introduced themselves, and I shared with them my struggles.
Later that day, Allison arrived at my door with a wheelbarrow full of firewood and kindling (引火物). She had pushed it from her home, just under a kilometre away. Then Colin turned up with some goldfish in a bucket. “Put them in your pond,” he said, knowing I had left my fish in Canterbury. Not long after, Fay came over with a community newsletter, and a bag of oranges from her garden.
These caring people gave me cheer and encouragement when I needed it most. After an unpleasant beginning, they made me and my dogs feel welcome in Blenheim, and are now our firm friends.

Do People Need Small Talk to Be Happy
Psychologists (心理学家) have long said that connecting with others is an important part of happiness, but just how much conversation we require is under examination. In one study, researchers found that small talk made up only 10% of their conversation related to happiness. __1__ Scientists believe that small talk could promote bonding. Late last year, Princeton researchers reported that small talk keeps closeness with loved ones, and isn't merely the stuff of awkward exchanges with strangers.
Still, chatting with strangers could brighten your morning. In a series of experiments, psychologists gave Chicago passengers different directions about whether to talk with fellow passengers — something they typically avoided. __2__ None of the chatters reported being rejected.
Small talk can also help us feel connected with our surroundings. People who smiled at, made eye contact with, and briefly spoke with their Starbucks baristas (服务员) reported a greater sense of belonging than those who rushed through the transaction (交易). __3__ One report found that when volunteers broke the silence to chat with gallery goers, the visitors felt happier and more connected with the exhibit than those who were not approached.
__4__ In one study, people who were rated “less curious” by researchers had trouble getting a conversation rolling on their own, and had greater luck building closeness with others when they were supplied with questions that encouraged personal disclosure (透露). But people who were considered “curious” needed no help when transforming conversations about ordinary things into personal exchanges. __5__
A.The same is true of gallery goers.
B.But don't play down small talk just yet.
C.They found that small talk is related to happiness.
D.Those told to chat with others reported a more pleasant journey.
E.Making small talk is an important skill for all the social situations.
F.A “curious mindset”, the author concluded, can lead to “positive social interactions”.
G.Of course, some people are better than others at turning small talk into something bigger.

Nobody likes feeling lonely, and isolation (孤立) isn't only a psychological problem. Loneliness increases a person's risk of death by 26 percent, an effect comparable to the health risks posed by obesity.
So some researchers are investigating what it is, exactly, that makes lonely people stay lonely. One long held theory has been that people become socially isolated because of their poor social skills — as they spend more time alone, the few skills they do have start to fail from lack of use. But new research suggests that this is a fundamental misunderstanding of the socially isolated. It's just that when they're in situations where they need those skills the most, they choke.
Professor Megan L. Knowles and her team tested the social skills of 86 undergraduates, showing them 24 faces on a computer screen and asking them to name the basic human emotion each face was showing:anger, fear, happiness, or sadness. In the end, the lonelier students did worse than the non lonely students on the emotion reading task — but only when they were told they were being tested on their social skills. When the lonely were told they were just taking a general knowledge test, they performed better than the non lonely.
So the lonelier people are, the better they are at accurately reading facial expressions and decoding tone of voice. Lonely people may be paying closer attention to emotional cues (暗示) precisely because of their willingness to belong somewhere and form interpersonal connections, which results in technically superior social skills.
This presents a fairly new way to think about lonely people. It's not that they need to improve the basics of social skills, which they've likely already shared. Instead, lonely people may need to focus more on getting out of their own heads, so they can actually use the skills they've got to form friendships and begin to find a way out of their isolation.
语篇解读:本文是说明文。一项研究表明孤独的人更擅长解读人的情感。
1.According to the traditional point of view, why do lonely people stay lonely
A.They are happy to stay alone.
B.They are difficult to get along with.
C.They have few chances to practice social skills.
D.They are likely to misunderstand others' opinion.
解析:选C 细节理解题。由第二段中的“One long held theory ...the few skills they do have start to fail from lack of use”可知,传统观点认为,孤独的人之所以孤独是因为他们缺少与人交往的机会,导致社会技能退化。
2.In the test mentioned in Paragraph 3, the lonely performed better when they________.
A.felt not very lonely
B.were under great pressure
C.were told it was a test on social skills
D.did not know the real purpose of the test

3.Compared to non lonely people, lonely people________.
A.can better control their emotions
B.can better express their emotions
C.can better read people's emotions
D.can better handle people's emotions
解析:选C 推理判断题。由第三段中的实验结果及第四段首句“So the lonelier people are, the better they are at accurately reading facial expressions and decoding tone of voice”可推断,孤独的人更擅长解读人们的情感。
4.What inspiration may lonely people get from the text
A.Be brave to make friends.

C.Find ways to learn social skills.
D.Make good use of your lonely time.

Not all awards are as noble as the Nobel Prize, which is world famous for giving prizes to people who made progress in literature, science, economics and — perhaps most importantly — peace. Even though most countries have a system for recognizing, honoring and rewarding people who have done something good in their countries, there are now hundreds of awards and awards ceremonies for all kinds of things.
The Oscars are probably the most famous, a time for the film industry to tell itself how good it is. The awards are not only for films — Now there are also Grammies, Brits, the Mercury Prize and the MTV and Q awards for music. In Britain, a writer who wins the Booker prize can expect to see their difficult, literary novel hit the bestseller lists and compete with The Da Vinci Code for popularity. The Turner Prize is an award for a British contemporary artist — each year it causes controversy by apparently giving lots of money to artists who do things like displaying their beds, putting animals in glass cases or — this year — building a garden shed.
Awards don't only exist for the arts. There are now awards for Sports Personality of the Year, for European Footballer of the Year and World Footballer of the Year. This seems very strange — sometimes awards can be good to give recognition to people who deserve it, or to help people who are on tight budget carry on their work without worrying about finances, but professional soccer players these days are_not_shy_of_fund!
Why have all these awards and ceremonies appeared recently Shakespeare never won a prize, nor did Leonardo Da Vinci.
Most awards ceremonies are now sponsored by big organizations or companies. This means that not only the person who wins the award benefits from it — but also the sponsors. The MTV awards, for example, are great for publicizing not only music, but also MTV itself!
On the surface, it seems to be a “win win” situation, with everyone being happy, but let me ask you a question — how far do you think that publicity and marketing are winning here, and how much genuine recognition of achievement is taking place
语篇解读:本文作者对种类越来越多的奖项及颁奖庆典提出了自己的疑问和看法。
5.Why does the writer write Paragraphs 2 and 3
A.To show the importance of giving awards to people.
B.To show there are various awards.
C.To tell us why so many awards appear.
D.To tell us how people win awards.
解析:选B 推理判断题。根据第二段和第三段列举电影类奖项Oscars、音乐类奖项Grammies, Brits, the Mercury Prize and the MTV and Q awards、文学奖项Booker prize以及当代艺术奖项、体育奖项等等可知,作者写这两段是为了展示多种多样的奖项。
6.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Don't need to carry on their work.
B.Aren't as famous as other people.
C.Aren't as important as other people.
D.Don't lack money.
解析:选D 词义猜测题。根据前文“to help people who are on tight budget carry on their work without worrying about finances”可知,此处是说现在专业足球运动员并不缺钱。
7.Which of the following statements may the writer agree with
A.The win win situation satisfies all people involved.
B.Most awards today go to people who don't really need them.
C.Awards should be given to people with financial problems.
D.Organizations that give awards take advantage of awards ceremonies.
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“This means that not only the person who wins the award benefits from it — but also the sponsors”可知,那些颁发奖项的组织或赞助者也同时从中获利。
8.In the passage, the writer is mainly concerned ________.
A.if awards go to people who really deserve them
B.if Nobel Prize and other awards are still as noble as before
C.that awards and ceremonies publicize the winners too much
D.that too many awards can do harm to publicity or marketing
解析:选A 推理判断题。根据第一段的第一句及最后一段的末句可知,作者对获奖是否真的是对成就的一种认可表示怀疑,这篇文章也贯穿了这个思想。PAGE

Small talk is a very short conversation used by individual to kill time and make the other person feel comfortable in his presence. However, sometimes you should be careful of your topics.
There are certain “safe” topics that people usually discuss.
The weather is probably the number one thing that people who do not know each other well discuss. Sometimes even friends and family members discuss the weather when they meet or start a conversation.
Another topic that is generally safe is current events. As long as you are not discussing a controversial_issue,_such as a recent law concerning equal rights, it is usually safe to discuss that. Entertainment and sports news is another good topic. If there is something that you and the other person have in common, that may also be acceptable to talk about. For example, if the bus is extremely full and there are no seats available, you might talk about the reasons why. Similarly, people in an office might casually discuss the new paint or furniture.
There are also some subjects that are not considered acceptable when making small talk.
Discussing personal information such as salaries or a recent divorce is unacceptable between people who do not know each other pliments on clothing or hair are acceptable; however, you should never say something (good or bad) about a person's body.
Negative comments about another person not involved in the conversation are also not acceptable. When you do not know a person well you cannot be sure who their friends are. You do not talk about private issues either, because you do not know if you can trust the other person with your secrets or personal information. Lastly, it is not wise to continue talking about an issue that the other person does not seem comfortable with or interested in.

Are you sick of feeling your tongue turn to a lump of (一块) coal whenever you meet a small talk situation Follow these smart tips, and you'll become a great conversationalist making lasting impressions wherever you go.
Debra Fine, author of The Fine Art of Small Talk, says that connecting with people through conversation doesn't always come instinctively(出于本能地). That means you need much training to improve your speaking abilities. First, have around three things to talk about before you head for an interview. Second, think of four questions you can ask that will make the other person chat. Finally, if you've met the person before, mention something of the previous conversation or introduction to show your interest.
The awkward moment when the other person didn't recognize you may make you feel hurt. Before you put too much pressure on a new relationship, be the first to say “hello”. You can release (释放) some pressure by saying, for example,“Stephanie Pratt Hi, good to see you again.” Another way to put strangers at ease is to smile and shake their hands when you greet them.
Small talk is always challenging at conferences or large events, especially when you don't know anyone. There's a reason why millions of people read the New York Times every day: to stay knowledgeable about the world they live in. If you find reading a daily newspaper too tedious,_find special topics that interest you. Learn the general news from News, CNN, or Google News. Build a conversation by asking, “Have you heard about ...?”
Last, listening is an important part of small talk, especially when you're entering a conversation that's already in progress. If you want to leave a lasting impression, one of the best ways is to be a great listener. As you listen to others' experiences and opinions, you'll enlarge your knowledge about other cultures and nations, and finally become a more fascinating conversationalist.

Anyone who passes regularly through busy public spaces knows that one victim of our obsession (痴迷) with digital devices such as smartphones has been small talk. With our eyes focused on our smartphones, fewer of us make conversation with strangers. But are we missing something in this loss of relaxing small talk
A growing body of research suggests that small talk has surprising benefits. In a study published in 2014 in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, researchers found that daily interactions with casual acquaintances can contribute to day to day well being. Participants were asked to record their daily interactions with people connected to them by “strong ties” (family and friends) and “weak ties” (acquaintances). On days when participants had more “weak tie” interactions than usual, they reported a greater sense of belonging and happiness.
In a study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology in 2014, another group of researchers looked at interactions among strangers. They invited 118 commuters (通勤者) at a Chicago area railway station and gave them one of three roles: to start a conversation on the train, to avoid any conversation and enjoy the solitude (loneliness) or to do whatever they normally do on their commute. In surveys completed afterward, those who were instructed to make conversation with strangers reported “notably more positive” commutes than those who rode in solitude.
“Talking with a stranger may not offer the same benefits as talking with a close friend, but we underestimate (低估) its importance to us,” says the study's co author, Nicholas Epley, a professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Dr. Epley traded in his own smartphone for an old featureless phone, which has made him, he says, more open to “wonderful, short conversations with strangers”.
People overestimate the social risks involved in small talk, adds Dr. Epley, “Most people not only want to talk to you, but they'll tell you secret things they may not even tell a family member”.
