Success is often measured by the ability to overcome adversity. But, it is often the belief of others that gives us the courage to try.
J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter book series, began writing at age 6. In her biography, she remembers with great fondness when her good friend, Sean, whom she met in secondary school, became the first person to encourage her and help build the confidence that one day she would be a very good writer.
“He was the first person with whom I really discussed my serious ambition to be a writer. He was also the only person who thought I was bound to be a success at it, which meant much more to me than I ever told him at the time.”
Despite many setbacks Rowling persevered in her writing, particularly fantasy stories. But it wasn't until 1990 that she first formed the idea about Harry Potter. As she recalls, it was on a long train journey from London to Manchester when “the idea of Harry Potter simply fell into my head. To my immense frustration, I didn't have a functioning pen with me, and I was too shy to ask anybody if I could borrow one. I think, now, that this was probably a good thing, because I simply sat and thought, for four (delayed train) hours, and all the details bubbled up in my brain, and this skinny, black haired, bespectacled (戴眼镜的) boy who didn't know he was a wizard became more and more real to me.”
That same year, her mother passed away after a ten year battle with multiple sclerosis (硬化症), which deeply affected her writing. She went on to marry and had a daughter, but separated from her husband shortly afterwards.
During this time, Rowling was diagnosed with clinical depression. Unemployed, she completed her first novel in area cafes, where she could get her daughter to fall asleep. After being rejected by 12 publishing houses, the first Harry Potter novel was sold to a small British publishing house.
Now with seven books that have sold nearly 400 million copies in 64 languages, J.K. Rowling is the highest earning novelist in history. And it all began with her commitment to writing that was promoted by the confidence of a friend!

Robinson Crusoe is a famous novel written by Daniel Defoe. The book tells the story of a man who is ship wrecked (遭遇海难的). He spends 28 years on an island near Venezuela. The book tells the story of everything that happens to Robinson Crusoe. He hopes someone will rescue him, but he has been there for so long on his own that he also begins to fear being rescued.
Robinson Crusoe was published in 1719. Most experts believe the story is based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, who was a Scottish sailor. On an expedition (探险) in 1704, Selkirk had an argument with his ship's captain. Selkirk thought the ship was not safe and was about to fall apart.
When the ship stopped at a remote island to get fresh water, Selkirk got off. He tried to get the other crew members to leave with him, but nobody would. The ship then sailed away without him. Selkirk spent four years and four months on his own on the island, known as Aguas Buenas.
Selkirk was finally rescued by a ship that visited the island in 1709. The ship's captain was grateful to Selkirk because he provided food for the crew when they arrived.
Now archaeologists think they have found the remains of Selkirk's camp on Aguas Buenas. They found two deep holes that would have held wooden posts. The archaeologists say this is evidence that Selkirk built a shelter there. The post holes are near a fresh water stream. They are located quite high up, which would have meant that Selkirk was able to watch out for the ships coming close to the island.
The most interesting evidence, the archaeologists say, is part of a piece of equipment used by sailors to navigate (导航). Historians believe Selkirk was a navigator, so the instrument could have belonged to him.
Robinson Crusoe was published ten years after Selkirk was rescued. Most experts think Daniel Defoe heard and read stories about Selkirk, which inspired him to write the book.

C.was being navigated by Selkirk
D.was running out of food upon arrival

A.By asking the crew members on the ships.
B.By sending messages to the ships' captains.
C.By watching from his shelter high on the island.

解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第五段中的“The archaeologists say this is evidence that Selkirk built a shelter there ... Selkirk was able to watch out for the ships coming close to the island”可知,考古学家认为Selkirk通过建在高处的居所来观察经过的船只。

If you love adventure and excitement, then Erin Hunter's best selling Warriors series is for you. The fantasy books follow four cat clans (家族) as they try to survive in the wilderness. In the latest book, Thunder Clan warrior Ashfur has been mysteriously murdered. This sets three warrior cats named Holly leaf, Lion blaze and Jay feather on a journey to find the killer.
The three friends must deal with other problems, too. Jay feather is searching for his parents, but he must make up many lies to find them. Holly leaf encounters her own obstacles when her clan refuses to follow the warrior code. And Lion blaze discovers some unbelievable secrets. All the while, the cats face many dangers and the chance that another warrior will disappear forever.
“Erin Hunter” is really a pen name for Victoria Holmes and two other authors, Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry. They chose Hunter to cover the three of them because of Redwall, a very successful book written by Brtan Jacques. It is a similar animal fantasy about rats and mice. Because Warriors was going to fit into that bracket,_they wanted their books to go onto the bookshelves next to his. So they needed a name that would be close to Jacques alphabetically (按字母顺序地). Hunter fits perfectly.
“My favorite character is Jay feather. You never know if he is on the side of the angels or not. He's got a quite dark side. In terms of the cat that I would like to be my best friend, that would be Cinderpelt. She is so cool. She has a great sense of humor and she is a good medicine cat. Even if she wanted to be a warrior, she will make the best of her destiny.I really admire that in her,” said Victoria Holmes.

I am reading Why Wall Street Matters, by William D. Cohan. It is not only informative but very readable, well researched, and easily understood. I find myself having to make course corrections about many preconceived (事先形成的) ideas about the financial engine of the United States and global economy. He has a real problem with Sen. Elizabeth Warren's ideas for improving matters. But other than that, I found him very knowledgeable about his subject.

If you have a love of flying, I recommend Mavericks of the Sky, by Barry Rosenberg and Catherine Macaulay. It tells the true story of the development of the US Air Mail service, which was made possible by the early flights and routes taken on by courageous pilots during and after World War Ⅰ. The details of the danger and risks these pilots faced as well as the political, economic, and social advantages of a faster way to deliver mail make for a very interesting read.

Nigel Hamilton has produced an original book explaining how Franklin Roosevelt assumed (承担) leadership of America's response to Nazi and Japanese threats, detailing the responsibility of the US president as commander in chief of the nation's armed forces. “A serious attack on the fantasy story for children comes from those who do not wish children to be frightened.” C.S. Lewis writes in an essay named Three Ways of Writing for Children. Those who say that children must not be frightened mean two things. Firstly, they mean that we mustn't do anything likely to give children fears, and secondly, they want to keep out of their minds that they are born into a world of death, violence (暴力), wounds and evil (邪恶). C.S. Lewis says he agrees with the first reason, but not the second.
He goes on to comment, “Since it is so likely that they will meet cruel (残酷的) enemies, let them at least hear of brave fighters and heroic courage. By limiting your child to perfect and nice stories of child life in which nothing alarming ever happens, they would fail to face fears and hardships.” “It would be nice,” he continues, “if no little boy in bed ever hears a frightening sound. But if he is to be frightened, I think St. George, or any bright champion in armor (盔甲), is a better comfort than the idea of the police.”
Bruno Bettelheim, a well known child psychologist, also points out that fantasy stories provide children with a valuable education about good and evil. He believes that all children have many personal fantasies filled with fears and fantasy stories comfort them and offer solutions. Happy endings tell them that solutions and hope are real and model the kind of happy life children want to find.
A good fantasy suggests rather than teaches possible answers to life. It's believed that reading fantasies quickens the ability to get and put ideas from books to reality. It's what good literature does — it makes life larger.

I once saw a TV programme at college about a scientist who used “drift bottles (漂流瓶)” to mark ocean currents. It was a rather boring programme. I was more interested to read an article about someone who found a bottle on a beach with a message inside. Like the drift bottles, it had been thrown into the sea — but 21 years before. I decided to find out more about such bottles, and I started work on this intriguing (非常有趣的) research.
An early message in a bottle was thrown into the sea by Christopher Columbus during a terrible storm. He wrote about his discovery of America and expected that his message would be sent to the Queen of Spain. He wanted the news to reach her, but he thought he might be drowned (淹死) in the storm. In fact, he survived but the bottle was never found.
I would be excited to find a message in a bottle, but in the 16th century, it could be dangerous. In those days, the British Navy (海军) used messages in bottles to send information about the enemy. When Queen Elizabeth Ⅰ found out that a boatman had opened a bottle containing one of these secret messages, she created a new job, Uncorker of Ocean Bottles. I was amazed to learn that anyone else who opened a bottle could be sentenced to death. It seems very strange to us now.
A long time ago, before dating websites existed to help people find partners, a sailor in Sweden put this message in a bottle — “To someone beautiful and far away.” It was found by a young woman in Sicily. She answered the message — “I am not beautiful, but it seems a miracle (奇迹) I found your message.” They began to write letters to each other, and eventually got married.
Nowadays it's easy to communicate with anyone anywhere in the world, but I think people will still go on throwing bottles with messages into the ocean and guessing where the winds and the waves will carry them. And how romantic it would be to find a bottle with a message inside!

Robert Frost (1874-1963) is one of America's most beloved poets. He was a contemporary of many modernist poetic movements, but he wasn't associated (与……有联系) with any particular group of poets. He stuck to his own literary beliefs, and as a result, he attracted a good deal of criticism from the literary world. But, it is just because he was such a person and his voice was so original that Frost became so beloved. If you are to choose one of his poems and read it aloud on a busy street, we are sure that many people will recognize the poem immediately as Frost's.
Mending Wall, which is the first poem in North of Boston, Frost's second book of poetry, is one of his most popular poems. It is a poem about two neighbors who fix a rock wall that lies between their homes. “I” want to destroy the wall, and the “neighbor” wants to leave it standing.
We just can't get enough of walls, can we People love boundaries (界线). We love them when we're little, protecting our precious toys from our troublesome (令人烦恼的) brothers and sisters. As we get older, we begin to throw around the gentle term “personal space”, as in “GET OUT OF MY ROOM!” In college, we really learn how the idea of “My house is your house” doesn't always result in happy roommate relationships. After we become adults with good jobs and a lot of cool things, we often put up fences, gates, walls, or doors to protect our stuff and keep the peace.
Walls help us protect ourselves, but their downside is that they often keep people from communicating with each other. Mending Wall makes us take a look at how we use our walls and boundaries, and why we use them the way we do. This poem sends a wake up call to the universe. There are walls between our hearts.
