7.Baking has become increasingly popular in the UK in recent years. This is in part thanks to television shows such as The Great British Bake Off which have inspired people to get in the kitchen.Baking is a relaxing activity which allows you to be creative and, of course, at the end you have a delicious treat. Here are four of my favourite, quintessentially British baked goods.
Victoria sandwich
This classic cake was named after Queen Victoria, who was famed for her love of cake, and it is sure to be found at the centre of afternoon tea tables across the country. It is a very simple cake typically made up of two layers of plain sponge cake with a generous layer of whipped cream and jam sandwiched in the middle.
Scones
Scones are not as sweet as cakes, in fact, a scone is a cross between a bread roll and a small cake. It should be sliced in half and spread with cream and jam. There is a lot of debate as to whether you should spread the jam or the cream on the scone first !
Flapjacks
Flapjacks are a tasty teatime treat made by mixing together oats, butter, sugar and syrup.
After they have been baked, they are sliced up into squares. They are very easy to make so even young children can have a go. However, this might lead to a lot of mess and sticky fingers! It is also possible to make flapjacks a little healthier by adding dried fruit, like raisins or sultanas, and nuts.
Shortbread
Despite its name, shortbread is actually a traditional Scottish biscuit. It is made with a large amount of butter which gives it its characteristic crumbly texture. As soon as you take a bite of a shortbread biscuit, it melts in your mouth !
All of the above are quick and easy to make and it goes without saying that they all taste best when served with a nice, hot cup of tea.

10.Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people the nation and especially the young people admire. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the potential (潜力) of that nation.
Today in America, if you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choice would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars the people connected with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent but one wonders if one should hold up rock stars as a model. The rock stars too often are mixed with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However, one should seek (寻觅) more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes.
A second type of hero for the American youth is the sports star. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area﹣sports. However, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of a disorder. Too frequently (频繁) drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star.
A third type of hero is the TV or movie star. This person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome. However, the personal life of too many actors is quite sad and they should not be held up as a model of young people. Today, the rock star, the athlete, and the actor all have become the models of the youth in America. Really, do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor, a teacher, or a scientist? These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone.
What is really sad is that the young try to imitate their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American young people are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright.
(1)From the passage, we know that the heroes the American youth admire are those .

11.Besides the spelling of the word, there are clearly many differences between American and British humor.
There is a common belief (信念)in the UK that Americans don't understand irony (讽刺).This is of course not true. But what is true is that Americans don't use it all the time. Irony may show up in American comedies, but people there don't use it as much as the British do in daily life. However, irony is common in British culture. It actually runs in the blood of the British people. They use it as a way of playing with their friends and laughing at their enemies as well as themselves in everyday conversations. This may sometimes make people unhappy if the listeners are not used to it. They may also feel embarrassed.
Things are different in America. After American people use irony, they feel the need to make a joke clearer so that it will not make other people uncomfortable. Humor is tied so much to culture. American jokes are clearer and more forward. British jokes, on the other hand, are more subtle and usually with a hidden meaning. This may result from the fact that British culture is more reserved (矜持的)than American culture. However,we still find that certain American comedies have made huge success in Britain.
Therefore, although there are differences between both comic styles, there is still an appreciation (欣赏)and understanding of the other's sense of humor.

When he wants food. he goes to the bananas plantation ,looks at tens of bunches of bananas and decides which to pick for the day's dinner. Next to the plantation(种植园)is a potato garden. To the south of the banana plantation is a peanut garden. Down the valley(山谷)is a land with tens of cows. They provide him with milk daily, 365 days a year.
He also has about 20 goats(山羊). In Uganda(乌干达), goat milk was generally not considered delicious, possibly because there is enough cow milk, so we never milked goats. He would sell a couple of them for money to send his children to school. He also raised a couple of chickens, more as a hobby. He drinks fresh juice from mangoes. He has done this for the past 75 years.

My grandfather, just like millions of other Africans that live like him, is considered poor.He seldom holds money, and he seldom needs it. Through labor(劳动), he produces most of what he needs. But using the standard World Bank/IMF description of 'poor' , my grandfather is poor. On that day, there is an interesting custom(习俗)called "zhua﹣zhou". Zhuazhou is one of the most important customs on a child's first birthday. Gifts from them on this day are something to eat or play with for the child.
Parents will put the baby in the middle of some things and see which thing they will pick up. If the baby picks up a coin(硬币), then he or she might be rich when they grow up. Or if the baby picks up a doll, maybe he or she will have many children. If the baby picks up a soccer ball, then he or she may be a soccer player in the future. In the great Chinese book, Hong Lou Meng, Jia Baoyu, picked up some girls' things when he was a child. As a result, he likes playing with girls very much.
