Ronald Chernow was born in Brooklyn on March 3, 1949. His father was the creator of a stock brokerage firm while his mother was an accountant (会计). Chernow graduated with honors from Yale University and further studied in Cambridge University, where he began but did not finish a PhD program due to health concern. And then he moved to a farm.
Chernow began his career as a journalist. He wrote more than 60 articles in newspapers and magazines from 1973 to 1982. In 1983, he put his writing activity aside when he began serving as the director of financial policy studies with the Twentieth Century Fund, which is based in New York. In 1986, he left the organization and refocused his efforts on writing. In addition to his backgrounds of writing nonfiction works and biographies, Chernow continued to write articles for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He has also provided commentary (现场解说) on business, politics, and finance on national radio and television shows while additionally appearing as an expert in documentary films (纪录片).
It was in 1990 that Chernow published his first book, The House of Morgan, which dates back to the history of four generations of the J.P. Morgan financial empire. The reviewer for The New York Times Book Review said, “It is, quite simply, a tour de force.” It is no doubt that this is a great achievement in history. Soon the book was honored with the National Book Award for Nonfiction.
In 1993, Chernow published The Warburgs, which is a description of the Warburg family, who immigrated to the US from Germany in 1938. The Warburg family was an outstanding financial dynasty of German Jewish, known for their accomplishments in physics, classical music, art history and finance. The book was awarded the Columbia Business School's George S. Eccles Prize for Excellence in Economic Writing.
In 1998, Chernow published Titan. The book reflected Chernow's continued interest in financial history, especially when shaped by renowned individuals. Susan Sontag (1933-2004) was one of the most noticeable figures in the world of literature. For more than 40 years she made it morally necessary to know everything — to read every book worth reading, to see every movie worth seeing. When she was still in her early 30s, publishing essays in such important magazines as Partisan Review, she appeared as the symbol of American cultural life, trying hard to follow every new development in literature, film and art. With great effort and serious judgment, Sontag walked at the latest edges of world culture.
Seriousness was one of Sontag's lifelong watchwords (格言), but at a time when the barriers between the well educated and the poor educated were obvious, she argued for a true openness to the pleasures of pop culture. In Notes on Camp, the 1964 essay that first made her name, she explained what was then a little known set of difficult understandings, through which she could not have been more famous.Notes on Camp, she wrote, represents “a victory of ‘form’ over ‘content’,‘beauty’ over ‘morals’”.
By conviction (信念) she was a sensualist (感觉论者), but by nature she was a moralist (伦理学者), and in the works she published in the 1970s and 1980s, it was the latter side of her that came forward. In Illness as Metaphor — published in 1978, after she suffered cancer — she argued against the idea that cancer was somehow a special problem of repressed personalities (被压抑的个性), a concept that effectively blamed the victim for the disease. In re examining old positions was her lifelong habit.
In America, her story of a 19th century Polish actress who set up a perfect society in California, won the National Book Award in 2000. But it was as a tireless, all purpose cultural view that she made her lasting fame.“Sometimes,” she once said, “I feel that, in the end, all I am really defending ...is the idea of seriousness, of true seriousness.” And in the end, she made us take it seriously too.

There are certain steps you can take to relieve the damage done by some of the previously mentioned reading problems. 1 Be sure to use and practice them as you read.
Take breaks.
Remember tiredness can lead to all of the health problems and to other problems as well. If you do not rest your mind, you will likely get tired and it will cost you points.
2
You can mark your place either by pointing to each word as you read it, or by placing a sheet of paper underneath the line you are reading. Pointing to each word with a pencil or your finger helps your eyes see where they should be reading. Placing a piece of paper under the line helps you to move smoothly from one line to the next.
Read aloud.
3 If you must remain silent, whisper the words to yourself, or mouth the words, and say them in your head. It is important that you actually hear the sounds, even if you only hear them in your imagination. This multisensory approach allows you to see, hear, and feel what you are reading. Reading aloud should help you stay focused, understand better and remember what you are reading.
4
If you are thinking about what is important enough to write down, you will pay more attention to the reading. 5 It will also help you process the main point of the passage and improve the possibility that you will remember things. In addition, the notes you take are a record of the passage that you can refer back to if you do forget elements.

B.Highlight text.
C.Trace your place.

Kath Walker is a very important figure in Queensland history. She was a leading Australian poet, writer, political activist, artist and educator. Kath grew up on North Stradbroke Island; she left school and home at 13 to work as a maid in Brisbane.
During World War Two Kath volunteered to serve in the Australian Women's Army Service. She had to return to domestic service work to support her young sons when her marriage ended in the 1950s.
Kath had a lifelong commitment to advancing civil rights and improving the lives of her people. She was a leading member of Aboriginal (澳大利亚土著的) organisations that demanded Constitutional change to end state control over Aboriginal people.
This hard fought campaign resulted in the history making 1967 Referendum (公投). Australians voted to include the Aboriginal people in the census (人口普查) and to ensure they were covered by Commonwealth laws.
In the 1950s Kath also became interested in poetry. She joined the Realist Writer's Group where she was encouraged to publish her work. Her first collection, We Are Going, was published in 1964 selling over 10,000 copies.

She saw young people as the hope of the future with thousands visiting the centre at North Stradbroke during the final decades of her life.
In 1987 Kath changed her name to Oodgeroo Noonuccal. Oodgeroo continued to work for her people up to her death. She died at her home on Stradbroke Island on 16 September 1993. She will be remembered for her pioneering poetry and her important role in Australian political life.

You might think that “global warming” means nothing more than a rise in the world's temperature. But, rising sea levels caused by it have resulted in the first evacuation (撤离) of an island nation — the citizens of Tuvalu will have to leave their homeland.
During the 20th century, sea level rose 8 12 inches. As a result, Tuvalu has experienced lowland flooding of salt water which has polluted the country's drinking water.
Paani Laupepa, a Tuvaluan government official, reported to the Earth Policy Institute that the nation suffered an unusually high number of fierce storms in the past ten years. Many scientists connect higher surface water temperatures resulting from global warming to greater and more damaging storms.
Laupepa expressed dissatisfaction with the United States for refusing to sign the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement calling for industrialized nations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions (导致温室效应的气体排放), which are a main cause of global warming. “By refusing to sign the agreement, the US has effectively taken away the freedom of future generations of Tuvaluans to live where their forefathers have lived for thousands of years,” Laupepa told the BBC.
Tuvalu has asked Australia and New Zealand to allow the gradual move of its people to both countries.
Tuvalu is not the only country that is vulnerable (易受影响的) to rising sea levels. Maumoon Gayoon, president of the Maldives, told the United Nations that global warming has made his country of 311,000 an “endangered nation”.

One of his songs, My Love is Like a Red Red Rose ranks among the finest love songs ever written and Auld Lang Syne (《友谊地久天长》) is sung all around the world.
As one of the first literate societies in Europe, the Scottish Parliament passed the world's first compulsory (义务) education law in 1496. By the 1790s, almost all Scots could read. Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, made full use of the greatest resources of the English Language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty five thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare uses it. Such a study is well worth the effort, even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare's day.
However, it is surprising that we should know comparatively (相对地) little about the life of the greatest English author. We know that Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford on Avon, and that he died there in 1616. He almost certainly attended the grammar school in the town, but of this we cannot be sure. We know that he was married there in 1582 to Anne Hathaway and that he had three children. We know that he spent much of his life in London writing his masterpieces. But this is almost all that we do know.
However, what is important about Shakespeare's life is not its details but its products, the plays and the poems. For many years scholars have been trying to add a few facts about Shakespeare's life to the small number we already possess and for an equally long time critics (批评) have been theorizing (理论化) about the plays. Sometimes, indeed, it seems that the poetry of Shakespeare will disappear under the great mass of comment that has been written up on it.
Fortunately, this is not likely to happen. Shakespeare's people have long delighted not just the English but lovers of literature everywhere, and will continue to do so after the scholars and critics and all their works have been forgotten.

Have you ever heard of an old saying Intelligence is a born ability while goodness is a choice. Gifts are easy — they're given after all. Choices can be hard.
I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I'd never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I'd been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn't work since most start ups don't and I wasn't sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I'd been a garage inventor. I'd always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.
I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me for a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn't already have a good job.” That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but finally, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn't think I'd regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision not to try at all.
After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I'm proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choice.
