The only reason I auditioned (试演) for my high school's play Here and Now was because friends had convinced me. Part of me thought there was no way I'd be able to memorize all those lines and still get good grades. Having never been in a play, I was unsure whether I could live up to everyone's trust. But the rest of me was excited to perform.
Surprisingly, my lines were easier to learn than I had thought. But as opening night approached, we practiced every day. We became stressed and emotionally drained,_forgetting lines we had known for weeks. We no longer laughed at funny parts. Our director was disappointed, frequently screaming at us to get our act together.
Opening night finally arrived. When we all stood together to pray for a successful performance, I realized this was what we all had been working toward for the last two months. And that's when I was faced with stage fright. However, stepping into the bright lights, all my fears just disappeared. I knew my lines perfectly and actually had fun. I had no reason to be nervous. After all, I knew my lines! I had prepared myself well for the play. I saw my family, and friends in the front row and smiled broadly before falling back into my character.
We finally put on a successful performance. As we gathered for one last group hug, I felt sad I had come to understand my character almost as well as I understood myself. All those weeks were over, those weeks of working together, of failing painfully but somehow knowing we'd come through. We had started out as a group of students whose only thing in common was the play and we had become friends. I knew that I would miss it all.

For high school leavers starting out in the working world, it is very important to learn particular skills and practise how to behave in an interview or how to find all internships (实习). In some countries, schools have programs to help students onto the path to work. In the United States, however, such programs are still few and far between.
Research shows that if high schools provide career related courses, students are likely to get higher earnings in later years. The students are more likely to stay in school, graduate and go on to higher education.
In Germany, students as young as 13 and 14 are expected to do internships. German companies work with schools to make sure that young people get the education they need for future employment.
But in America, education reform programs focus on how well students do in exams instead of bringing them into contact with the working world. Harvard Education school professor Robert Schwartz has criticised education reformers for trying to place all graduates directly on the four year college track. Schwartz argued that this approach leaves the country's most vulnerable (易受影响的) kids with no jobs and no skills.
Schwartz believed that the best career programs encourage kids to go for higher education while also teaching them valuable practical skills at high school. James Madison High School in New York, for example, encourages students to choose classes on career based courses. The school then helps them gain on the job experience in those fields while they're still at high school.
However, even for teens whose schools encourage them to connect with work, the job market is daunting. In the US, unemployment rates for 16 to 19 year olds are above 20 percent for the third summer in a row.
“The risk is that if teenagers miss out on the summer job experience, they become part of this generation of teens who had trouble in landing a job,” said Michael, a researcher in the US.

In America, after middle school comes high school, which includes grades 9 through 12. Students are required to take certain subjects like English, social studies, math, science and physical education. In addition, they choose among elective subjects to complete their high school education. Electives include subjects in technology, music, art and foreign languages.
Each student in the school has his own locker for books. This convenience saves students from carrying textbooks, and allows students a small space they can decorate with posters and favorite objects.
Most high schools have at least one sports team that competes in local events, and all students are encouraged to be involved in athletics. Schools often offer football, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, tennis and soccer. Some may even have sports like golf, swimming, gymnastics and cross country skiing.
Many high school students have part time jobs by the age of 15 or 16, some even earlier. Their first jobs are often babysitting or cutting lawns, but later they will likely get a job at a fast food restaurant, a video store, or a clothing shop.
Sixteen is the legal driving age in most states, and students usually want to own a car as soon as they can. Some parents allow their children to drive a family vehicle, and may even buy a car as a graduation present. Others prefer that their sons and daughters earn enough to purchase a used vehicle. Many teenagers feel it's a necessity to own a car, and will do whatever it takes to be able to drive.

A new study finds a lack of education for young children in developing nations seriously affects the country's economic progress. The organization Results for Development called R4D performed the study. The Non Governmental group is based in Washington D.C. Its study says children who are not attending primary school are an unused source of economic growth for their country.
R4D says it performed the study because it was worried about a growing worldwide problem in education.
Milan Thomas works for R4D. He says there has been progress in reducing the number of children who do not attend school, but he says that progress has slowed in recent years. He says there is no disagreement that children with basic education can look forward to a better life.
“The benefits associated with primary education are really undisputed at this point because there are countless studies showing that children who complete basic education tend to enjoy better health and higher incomes over their lifetimes,” said Thomas.
But he says even though the value of education is known, it is important to find new ways of proving that value. So the organization led its work with the question, “what is the estimated cost to a nation's economy of its out of school children?”
The study uses information from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, as well as studies of developing labor markets. The results indicate the losses suffered by 20 developing countries if more young children can not get basic education. Milan Thomas says the study also considered earnings the children not attending primary school would never receive.
He says the research found that it is far more costly in sub Saharan Africa to have primary school age children out of school than to educate them. He notes the cost to provide all children with primary education is much less than the average cost of not providing the schooling.
He says he hopes the study will prove to local governments and policy makers the value of a basic education for all children. And he says he hopes it will move them to provide that education to primary school age children in their country.

Many parents are beginning to demand less technology use in the primary classroom due to the amount of screen time children have at home. This raises the question about whether technology in the classroom helps or stops learning.
We often hear complaints that children have lost the ability to carry out simple calculations (计算) because of the reliance on calculators in primary schools. This is not the case. In fact, calculators are not a significant feature of primary school maths lessons. When calculators are used in primary classrooms, it's usually to help children develop number sense or to study number patterns and relationships. It allows them to apply their knowledge of place value and other number related concepts rather than using a traditional method.
In Australia, the use of digital technologies in the primary maths classroom is not an option. To change the situation, the government has taken measures to make it feasible for teachers to apply technologies in all subject areas. Fortunately, schools have access to more powerful, affordable devices than ever before. These are the same devices that many children have already had access to at home.
In a recent research evaluation of the Matific digital resources, the students found that they enjoyed using the resources on iPads and computers, and went from thinking about maths as something boring to something that is fun to learn. The children also voluntarily started to use their screen time at home to do maths. Pre test and post test data also showed improved scores.
Many would consider that the use of mobile devices in maths would consist of simple game playing. The appearance of many low quality apps makes it hard for children to get learning chances. Luckily, there's much that teachers can do and are doing with technology.
Just as the world has changed, the mathematics classroom has also changed. When it comes to technology in the classroom, it's all about balance.

When you put down your pens at the end of the college entrance exam, 12 hard years of study will have come to an end. Forget your studies for a while. It's time to enjoy yourselves!
There are many ways to celebrate this special month of graduation. You can have photos taken with your classmates and teachers, or dine out together and exchange gifts.
High school students in Western countries such as the United States and Canada usually have a prom to mark their graduation. It's to mark the time kids turn into young men and women. After the prom, teenagers either go to college or find a job. It means they are no longer as dependent on their parents as they were before.
At the prom, boys usually dress in dinner jackets and bow ties, though many different types of formal clothes are worn. Traditionally, girls give boys matching boutonnieres (a small collection of flowers they pin to their jackets). Girls traditionally wear formal dresses, or dress to shock or be noticed, in shiny or brightly colored materials.
Common prom activities include dining, dancing, the crowning of a Prom King and Queen, and just talking to friends. In some cases, high school students collect funds for their class prom through the four years of their high school. High schools in or near large cities may rent ballrooms at expensive hotels or, to be unusual, on a pleasure cruise boat (游船). But often costs are cut by simply using the school gym. Students make a lot of effort to decorate the gym to make the event special. The music played at the prom will be the most popular kinds, like rock and hip hop.
The students elect the Prom Queen. She is partnered with a Prom King who is elected similarly. These are great honors that the pair take very seriously. The two dance with each other to celebrate their election.

As a senior, I realised it was time to make one of the biggest decisions of my life, but I was absolutely short of talent. My friends were applying to schools like Tufts and Berkeley, while the only planning I had done was for the coming weekend. I wasn't ready for college. I was frightened and didn't know what to do.
My parents agreed that I was short of talent. “Maybe you should go to preparatory school (预科学校) for an additional year,” my mother suggested. Preparatory school Was she crazy I wasn't the greatest student, but I couldn't go to a preparatory school. I thought that was for stupid kids — kids who don't get good jobs or succeed in life.
My grandfather, who recently passed away, has had the greatest influence on my life. I knewthathe graduated from a top college, Bowdoin, but I didn't know whether this was my best bet, and feared finding the perfect school would be difficult.
Then, I heard about New Hampton School from a friend and decided to visit. I was blown away and immediately felt comfortable. I became hesitant (犹豫的) to visit other schools because I couldn't imagine any other would be as educating as New Hampton. The staff gave me a warm feeling, which meant a lot to a kid from a small town. Even though I'm a senior, I will be able to better prepare myself for college at New Hampton School. I feel the staff will help me get that extra year of development to make sure that I will be ready for college. Then I'll go.
