Basketball, the world's greatest sport ever, but of course, it hasn't been around since the world began. No, somebody had to have invented it. And that somebody would be James Naismith.
Born in Almonte, Ontario, Canada, this Canadian Gym teacher and physician would soon be the founder of basketball. It all started in December of 1891. Naismith was teaching in Springfield, Massachusetts and was asked by Luther H.Gulick, the Headmaster of the school for Christian Works to make a new sport. The main idea of the sport was mainly to be played inside when it was too cold to go outside. The new sport also had to keep athletes in their top conditions between the baseball and football season. Naismith began to work. The first game ball was a soccer ball.
The first baskets were peach baskets that Naismith cleverly thought of hanging on the wall. From there, the legacy of basketball began. Originally, there was 9 men to each team, but the objective was still the same; to pass the ball to other players on your team and put the ball in the opposing team's net, or basket back then. From there, basketball caught on like wildfire.
During 1885 high schools and colleges began to adopt the game, and by 1898, the first Pro League was founded. After the first game played, Naismith drafted 13 rules and regulations, but many more were yet to come. The hoops we know today were invented in 1906.They were steel, with a net hanging from its rim.
Dr James Naismith is known world wide as the inventor of basketball. The concept of basketball was born from Naismith's school days in the area where he played a simple child's game known as duck on a rock outside his one room schoolhouse. The game involved attempting to knock a “duck” off the top of a large rock by tossing another rock at it. Naismith went on to attend McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Grandparents who help out occasionally with childcare in their community tend to live longer than seniors who do not care for other people, according to a study from Berlin, Germany.
“Having no contact with grandchildren at all can negatively impact grandparents' health. This link could be deeply rooted in our evolutionary past when help with childcare was important for the survival of the human species,” said Sonja Hilbrand, one of the researchers.
The findings are drawn from data on more than 500 people over age 70. Overall, after accounting for grandparents' age and general state of health, the risk of dying over a 20 year period was one third lower for grandparents who cared for their grandchildren, compared with grandparents who provided no childcare.
Caregiving was associated with a longer life even when the care receiver wasn't a relative. Half of all childless seniors who provided support to friends or neighbors lived for seven years after the study began, while non helpers lived for four years on average.
“Caregiving may give caregivers a purpose of life because they may feel useful for others and society. Caregiving may be thought also as an activity that keeps caregivers physically and mentally active,” said Professor Bruno Arpino.
Arpino noted, however, that caregiving is not the only activity that can improve health and that too many caring responsibilities can take away from other beneficial activities like working, being in social clubs, or volunteering. “Children should take_into_account their parents' needs, willingness, and desires and agree with them on the timing and amount of childcare,” he suggested.
“It is very important that every individual decides for himself/herself, what ‘proper amounts of help’ means,” Hilbrand said, adding, “As long as you do not feel stressed about the intensity (强度) of help you provide you may be doing something good for others as well as for yourself.”

8.What does the last paragraph tell us
A.Grandparents can do anything in their own interests.
B.Grandparents should share more social responsibilities.
C.Proper amounts of childcare do good to grandparents.
D.Caregiving guarantees every grandparent a longer life.

Have you ever wondered how your favorite NBA team received its famous name All NBA teams have an interesting story or a history behind their names. Some of the names reflected the city's culture or history, others came from previous owners and many were selected through “Name the Team” contests.
For teams like Los Angeles and Utah, the names were not always a reflection of the city. Even though Los Angeles has no lakes, the Laker name has been a city treasure for almost 40 years. Before going to Los Angeles, the team originated in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1948, team officials chose the name for its direct relationship to the state's motto, “The Land of 10,000 Lakes”. The team name went unchanged after moving to Los Angeles in 1960.
Because Utah's team originated in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was called the Jazz. In 1974, New Orleans club officials chose the name to represent the city for its reputation as the “jazz capital of the world”. The name stayed with the team even after finding a new home in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979.
The Chicago Bulls' original owner, Richard Klein, named the team the Bulls. He picked the name because a fighting bull is relentless (不屈不挠的) and never quits. Klein, who founded the club in 1966, believed these qualities were necessary for a championship team and hoped his Chicago athletes would live up to the team name.
Miami chose the Heat from names such as the Sharks, Beaches, and Barracudas. The name Magic was the winner for the Orlando team because the city's tourism slogan is “Come to the Magic.”
Tradition played a big part in naming the New York Knicks. Chosen by the club's founder Ned Irish, the Knicks' name was already important in New York's history. The first organized team in baseball history was named the New York Knickerbockers or the Knickerbockers Nine.
In 1967, the Indian Pacers selected their team name in a different way from most other teams. Their decision was based on what they wanted to accomplish in the NBA. Team officials chose the Pacers name because the organization wanted to set the “pace” in professional basketball.

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Jaime Nared is nearly 6 foot 1 and blessed with Michael Jordan style skills. In games, she can more than hold her own against the boys, dropping three pointers and sometimes scoring 30 points or more.
And there, according to her coach, lies the problem.
“She's so good,” Michael Abraham said. “She makes the boys look like scrubs (灌木丛).” So she has been told she can no longer play on boys' teams at the Hoop, a private Beaverton basketball facility that runs a league in which Abraham's teams compete.
The trouble started last month, when some parents told the Hoop management they didn't like Jaime playing with the boys. Hoop officials informed Abraham that Jaime, after years on one of his boys' teams, was refused. Neal Franzer, the Hoop's director of operations, said Thursday that the parents were adamant (坚决的) but their complaints had nothing to do with Jaime's skills.
“They said the problem was that the boys were playing differently against her because she was a girl,” he said. “They'd been taught not to push a girl, and the focus had changed from playing basketball to noticing a girl was on the floor with them.”
Hoop officials e mailed Abraham to remind him of the rules. Abraham, Jaime and her parents didn't buy it. “I think the complaints come from parents who don't like seeing a girl that good playing against their sons,” Abraham said.
Jaime, who said she “fell in love” with basketball when she was 8, likes the boys' team because boys play a fast paced game.
Jaime's mum, Reiko Williams, said the issue boiled over after a particular game. “She scored 30 points,” Williams said. “I remember one play. She stole the ball and made a behind the back pass to a teammate. He missed the lay in, and she grabbed the rebound and put it in. I think it was just too much for some of those parents.”

Not everyone can become a professional basketball or football player. Not everyone, especially youth living in the city, has access to large green fields. But kids still want to compete. So all over America, young people started skateboarding and bicycling. This is where the Extreme Games, or X Games, started.
The X Games are beautiful to watch. They simply defy gravity. Riders fly down ramps on skateboards and do crazy tricks in the air. The X Games have become so popular that BMX cycling is the newest sport in the Olympics. You will see competitors descend a 25 foot (8 meters) ramp, the highest in the world, as they race through a wild obstacle course.
But the X Games are more than sports. They have become a culture. Fans of the X Games have rejected the mainstream. They wear certain clothes, listen to different music and live life to the fullest.
It is not unusual to see young people riding a skateboard or showing off their cycling tricks in a park. Extreme sports arrived in China in the late 1990s. The Chinese Extreme Sports Association was established in 2004.
Shanghai will hold the Asian X Games at the end of April. Check them out and maybe you'll find a new sport you love.

When baseball games start in America every spring, one April day is always used to honor Jackie Robinson, the man who broke the color line of America's national game. While his achievements on the baseball field were impressive, his efforts in the civil rights movement, according to his wife Rachel Robinson, were equally important and often overlooked.
The spirited way Jackie Robinson played baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers could show his focus on civil rights. From the beginning of the “Great Experiment” of having African Americans in baseball, he knew that his performance on the field would influence sports segregation (隔离). Jackie gradually changed jeers (嘲讽) and shouts into cheers and acceptance because white audience could see his great talent from any seat in the stadium. Jackie became a highly respected figure by continually succeeding on and off the field.
The vast amount of energy Jackie spent avoiding many unexpected difficulties could have caused an ordinary man to lose heart; rather, Jackie tried his best to increase his efforts for positive civil rights changes, both in his sport and in the African American community at large. While many athletes today use their status to live as super stars, Jackie always made use of his status to advance the civil rights movement. He often used his baseball travels as opportunities to speak publicly to blacks in U.S. cities about ending segregation and defending their_rights.
Post baseball, Jackie became a businessman, but he still found time to write letters and telegrams to various U.S. presidents during the civil rights movement. He had the status to demand that they too remain firmly focused on civil rights measures.
Though Jackie Robinson's baseball achievements may be more widely known than his tireless efforts in the civil rights movement, his surprising courage on the baseball field was itself a positive standpoint against segregation and inequality.

Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but there have only been few players who were truly great. How did these players get that way — was it through training and practice, or are great players “born, not made”? First, these players came from places that have had famous stars in the past — players that a young boy can look up to and try to imitate. In the history of soccer, only seven countries have ever won the World Cup — three from South America and four from Western Europe. There has never been a great national team — or a really great player — from North America or from Asia. Second, these players have all had years of practice in the game. Alfredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player, as was Pele. Most players begin playing the game at the age of three or four.
Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighborhood — a poor, crowded area where a boy's dream is not to be a doctor, lawyer, or businessman, but to become a rich, famous athlete or entertainer (艺人). For example, Liverpool, which produced the Beatles, had one of the best English soccer teams in recent years. Pele practiced in the street with a “ball” made of rags (破布). And George Best learned the tricks that made him famous by bouncing the ball off a wall (对着墙壁踢球) in the slums (贫民窟) of Belfast.
All great players have a lot in common, but that doesn't explain why they are great. Hundreds of boys played in those Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele. The greatest players are born with some unique quality that sets them apart from all the others.
