Have you ever seen a Kunqu Opera, or heard the beautiful sound of a Guqin These two traditional Chinese art forms are both included in UNESCO's list of “oral and intangible heritage of humanity”. This year, China has selected another art form to compete to join this special group. Muqam (木卡姆), the traditional folk music of Xinjiang's Uygur people will be considered alongside other countries' entries. “The intangible cultural heritage of different countries and different people should be treasured by the world,” said Wang Wenzhang, president of the Chinese Academy of Arts.
Known as “the mother of Uygur music”, Muqam has a long history. Some scholars believe that its origins can be traced back to the “Great Western Region Melody” (西域大曲). This developed during the Han (202 BC-220 AD) and Tang (618-907 AD) dynasties and enjoyed great popularity in central China. In the mid 16th century, the Silk Road connected China and Europe. Xinjiang was at the center of the cultural exchange between east and west. Muqam music was spread across Uygur populated areas during that time. The queen of Yarkant Kingdom (叶尔羌王国), whose name was Amannisahan, was a poet and musician. She devoted all her efforts to collecting and sorting Muqam music. With the help of other experts, she finally worked out 12 pieces of music, which became the famous Twelve Muqam. When Amannisahan was doing her work, she didn't seek materials from the fully developed Arabian and Persian music. Instead, she exploited the rich resources of Uygur folk music that spread across the north and the south of the Tianshan Mountains. As a result, the Twelve Muqam has a strong Uygur flavor.
The Twelve Muqam includes more than 340 classical songs, folk songs, love songs and pieces of dance music and instrumental music. The whole set takes 24 hours to play. Ever since it spread among the Uygurs, the Twelve Muqam has played an important part in their lives. They sing songs and dance to the music. Kurban Mamut, editor in chief of a Uygur language magazine, says that he often listened to the Twelve Muqam when he was a child. “The Twelve Muqam helps bring moral ideas to the Uygur children, and gives them a noble and strong personality,” he said.
After New China was founded, the local government of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region made every effort to preserve the Twelve Muqam. In 1960, two volumes of the Twelve Muqam were published. This finally protected this oral cultural heritage. Over the past two decades, local Xinjiang cultural institutions have supported research projects. A number of books about the Twelve Muqam have been published. CDs, VCDs and DVDs of the Twelve Muqam have also been made.

The ancient Mayan civilization collapsed due to a century long drought, a new research suggests.
Minerals taken from Belize's famous underwater cave, known as the Blue Hole, as well as lagoons (环礁湖) nearby, show that an extreme drought occurred between A.D. 800 and A.D. 1000, right when the Mayan civilization ended. After the rains returned, the Mayans moved north — but they disappeared again a few centuries later, and that disappearance occurred at the same time as another dry period, the sediments (沉积物) reveal.
Although the findings aren't the first to tie a drought to the end of the Mayan culture, the new results strengthen the case that dry periods were indeed the cause. That's because the data came from several spots in a region central to the Mayan heartland, said study co author Andre Droxler, an Earth scientist at Rice University.
From A.D. 300 to A.D. 700, the Mayan civilization flourished in the Yucatan Peninsula. These ancient Mesoamericans built great pyramids, mastered astronomy, and developed both a writing system and a calendar system, which is famous for predicting that the world would end in 2012.
But in the centuries after A.D. 700, the civilization's building activities slowed and the culture fell into war and unrest.
The evidence for a drought has been growing in recent years.A 2012 study in the journal Science analyzed a 2,000 year old stalagmite (石笋) from a cave in southern Belize and found that sharp decreases in rainfall coincided with periods of decline in the culture. But the data came from just one cave, which meant it was difficult to make predictions for the area as a whole, Droxler said.
To look for signs of a drought, the team drilled the sediments in the Blue Hole of Lighthouse Lagoon. The lagoons are surrounded on all sides by thick walls of coral reefs.During storms or wetter periods, excess water runs off from rivers and streams, overtops the retaining walls, and is deposited in a thin layer at the top of the lagoon. From there, all the sediments from these streams settle to the bottom of the lagoon, piling on top of each other and leaving a record of the historical climate.
The team found that during the period between A.D. 800 and A.D. 1000, when the Mayan civilization collapsed, there were just one or two tropical cyclones (气旋) every two decades, as opposed to the usual five or six. After that, the Mayans moved north, building at sites such as Chichen Itza, in what is now Mexico.

Among the seven wonders of the ancient architectural (建筑方面的) world, the pyramids in Egypt are the only ones still standing.
For 1,000 years, they were the tallest buildings in the world. Built with prehistoric technology, they were an architectural mystery, as strange as the Sphinx (狮身人面像).
No one really knows how they were built. The first historical record, by the Greek writer Heroditus, came 2,000 years later. Without hard facts, there have been many theories.
Hollywood has mostly followed the examples from the Greek record: 100,000 slaves worked hard for 20 years. Others believe a very large slope snaked around the pyramids. An American recently put forward the theory that kites could have lifted the 2 ton stones.
Now Houdin, a French architect, says that after studying the pyramids for eight years, he has solved the mystery with the help of 3 D computer animation (三维动画). He believes the pyramids were built from the inside out through an internal slope that goes around a central point. “This is completely new. Everyone before me thought that the pyramids were built from the outside, and only from the outside,” he said.
Scholars of ancient Egypt are interested. “It's a theory which sounds reasonable. Scholars of ancient Egypt agree it ought to be tested, and it doesn't cause damage, so I wouldn't be surprised that within a year, we have the final answer,” said Bob Brier, a scholar at Long Island University.
If that is the case, we'll know the truth about the pyramids in the blink of an eye, considering this mystery has lasted for nearly 5,000 years.

An ancient Egyptian mummy thought to be that of Pharaoh Ramses Ⅰ has returned home after more than 140 years in North American museums. The body was carried off the plane in Cairo in a box covered with Egypt's flag.
The Michael Carlos Museum gave it back after tests showed it was probably that of the man who ruled 3,000 years ago. The US museum acquired it three years ago from a Canadian museum, which in turn is thought to have bought it from Egyptian grave robbers in 1860. The mummy was welcomed back home with songs and military band music during a ceremony at the national museum in Cairo.
Zahi Hawass, head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities (文物最高委员会), traveled from the US with the body and said it would be moved next year to the Luxor Museum in southern Egypt. “We are not 100% sure that the mummy is that of Ramses Ⅰ.” said Mr Hawass. “But we are 100% sure that it is of a king.”
Atlanta's Michael Carlos Museum acquired the mummy in 1999, but offered to return it after hi tech scanning (扫描) equipment indicated it was likely to be that of Ramses Ⅰ. The museum website said it had been acquired from the Niagara Falls Museum. It is thought a Canadian collector bought the mummy for the Niagara Falls Museum around 1860 from an Egyptian family which had stumbled on (偶然发现) a tomb filled with royal mummies at a site near Luxor. Mr Hawass praised the handover as “a great civilized gesture”. And he appealed to other world museums to return Egypt's antiquities, particularly the Rosetta Stone in the British Museum and the Bust of Nefertiti in the Berlin Museum.

Yosemite is a national park in California. It is very beautiful and big. The park includes more than 760,000 acres in the California Mountains. Most of the park is wilderness.
The part of Yosemite that everyone likes is Yosemite Valley. It is a tiny valley that is 7 miles long and less than 1 mile wide. It has tall rock walls and streams that splash down in waterfalls. More than two million visitors come to the valley each year.
One ranger (护林人) says the number of visitors is more than the land can handle. The valley has 4,500 camping spots. It has a hotel that can hold 4,000 families. This is still not enough to handle all of the visitors. The valley has grown so big that it has a lot of traffic and crime.
A worker says the park is trying to keep the beauty of the park and let everyone visit. Some areas have been fenced off from people and planted with seeds to try to keep them beautiful.
A former worker thinks Yosemite should get more money to take better care of the park. He would also like to teach people what the park service is trying to do.
Some people are trying to save Yosemite Valley. A plan has been made to get rid of some buildings. There will be fewer cars allowed inside the park. More buses will help get people around.

Heritage is our legacy (遗产) from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable (不可取代的) sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Great Wall of China make up our world's heritage.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972.
How does a place become a World Heritage Site It takes a lot of people to decide.
1) If a country wants one of its places to be on the World Heritage List, it has to ask UNESCO. The place must be important and special. UNESCO put the Great Wall on the list in 1987 because, it said, it was a great part of Chinese culture and beautifully made to go with the land. When a country asks, it must also make a plan for taking care of the place.
2) The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO talks about different places and decides whether to put them on the list. The committee meets every June. Many experts help the committee to decide.
3) After a new place goes on the list, UNESCO gives money to help keep it looking good. If a place is in serious danger, it may be put on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger. UNESCO gives special care and help to those places.
4) Countries have to give UNESCO regular reports about places on the list. If UNESCO thinks a country isn't taking good enough care of a place, the site will be taken off the list.
