The audience start to scream and young people all over Britain turn on their TVs. Yes, it's Top of the Pops!
Top of the Pops is an amazing 34 year old TV programme. Pop stars from all over the world appear on this successful TV programme. After 1,800 shows, it's still the most popular pop music show in Britain. So what's the secret
“We get lots of bands to perform live in the studio,” says producer Chris Cowey.“That just doesn't happen on other shows.”
Chris starts planning the programme over a week before it goes out. His first job is to decide which bands to have on the show. When the chart of the top twenty songs is produced on Sunday, Chris can start to book the bands.
Monday starts with Chris meeting his sound, lighting and camera workers. They listen to each song and plan the show. Tuesday is paperwork day. There are booking to make sure of letters to answer and lots of phone calls to make. The show is on Thursday. Bands arrive at the studio from 10 o'clock in the morning and start practicing. Tonight's presenter, Jo Whiley, practices too.
First the bands go to make up. Judy and Issy are the make up artists.“We see the stars with no make up on, looking terrible,” says Issy. Then the bands go to the costume department where Marianne dresses the stars.
Back in the studio things are happening. The audience are practicing their dance moves! It takes over two hours to record the whole programme, then Chris edits it all night long. The final version is exactly 29 minutes long.

Listening to music can help me focus better. Since I discovered it two years ago, I've used music to get through boring work or to focus creatively. I've found that it can make even the dullest jobs enjoyable and help clear mental blocks to creativity.
I first noticed the good effects of music while playing video games. It was a few days before Christmas in 2008 and I was playing online video games. My parents had just given me a new MP3, so I decided to listen to music through the headphones while I played. After a few minutes I noticed a great change in my style of play. I was playing more naturally. The music relaxed me, and, to a certain extent, distracted me from the game, allowing my subconscious (潜意识的) talent to come through. The music also helped me block out the outside world. With those headphones on I was like a machine, moving from one task to the next without unnecessary thoughts or actions.
Music can also have a great effect on mood. If I'm in a bad mood at work, I'll listen to some of Bob Marley's and get down to business. It always takes my mind off what I'm doing and makes me a happier person. The same is true for classic rock. One summer, I did a boring job collecting bottle openers by hand. Without a radio playing classic rock in the background, I would have hated life.
Listening to music with relaxing rhythms and a positive message helps you forget your work and think happy thoughts. But the results you see will depend heavily on your personal tastes. Experiment with the types of music you listen to during certain tasks. By trial and error you'll finally discover your best choice, I'm always looking for new concentration aids, so I'd love to know what type of music works best for me.

Like many people you may be dreaming of a career as a rock and roll star. There are two ways to go about getting one. First there is the traditional way. Find some friends and form a group. Learn to play the guitar or the drums. Write your own songs. Spend hours arguing about the band name. Then go on the road.
The next step is to spend a year or two touring. If you are any good, the crowds will get bigger. In the end an artist from a record company may come to a show. If he or she likes you, there may be a deal. This is the route traditionally followed by bands in the music industry. Success means fame and wealth. And failure gives you some interesting stories to tell your children.
Over the last few years a different path to success has become known. Boy bands like Boyzone and girl bands like the Spice Girls don't come together on their own. They are created by managers and record companies. Their image is strictly controlled. Professional song writers usually write their music. This is a convenient arrangement and the public seems to love the result.
Though boy and girl bands have become very popular recently, there is a long tradition of making music in this way. In the early 1960's an American businessman called Berry Gordy founded Motown Records. Motown is short for “motor town”. The record company was based in the city of Detroit, where thousands of African Americans had moved to work in the car industry. They brought with them a cultural tradition of writing and performing music. This style later became known as “soul music”. Berry Gordy was a diamond miner. He took raw talent from the street and polished it until it shone. Motown stars were not just given songs to sing. They were also taught how to dress well and speak properly.

When I was in high school, I took part in the Upward Bound Program. There I was influenced by the academic (学业的) success of my tutors. Through Upward Bound I was able to gain skills and opportunities that have helped me become the man that I am today. So I now often give back to enable kids to have the same chances at life that I have had.
Volunteering is the best payback to those who helped me on the road to success. I remember asking a counselor (指导教师) when I was in Upward Bound how I could repay him. He smiled and said, “Shawn, you can help me by helping another.” A statement is so simple, yet so deep in its meaning.
When I got my first volunteer position as a junior counselor at my local Boys and Girls Club, I was eager to be a great role model for the kids. But things did not work out as I thought at first. After about a couple of weeks of volunteering, I felt that my efforts were in vain. It was a slow process and I got disappointed.
By the time I had reached my wits end and was ready to quit, I overheard some of the kids asking where I was that day. They said they liked having me around. My desire to give back to the community was renewed by the fact that I made a difference. Now the feeling that I can shape someone's life for the better is amazing.
People volunteer for different reasons. I volunteer because I really want to help. But some volunteer for personal gain. Some people think poorly of it. But I don't think so. Despite the fact that they are benefiting from volunteering, so are the people they are helping. So it is a good thing. After all we all win when we volunteer. So I appeal to everyone for finding a cause and volunteering. In this way, you will be not only helping others, but also helping yourself.

The crowd cheered and cheered. The man with the horn waved and smiled his great, happy smile.“More! More!” cried the crowd. And Louis Armstrong took his horn and began to play again. Here he was in England. Now as a famous man, he was rich. He knew many important people. Wherever he went, people knew his name. They wanted to hear his music. As Louis played the sad, slow songs, he thought of his home in New Orleans. He lived there as a boy. How many years ago was it It was a busy, exciting city. But Louis' family was very poor. He went to work to help his mother. He also went to school. One of Louis' teachers asked him to be in the school band.“This horn is yours until you leave our school,” his teacher said. When he left school, he played in many bands. He loved his work and people loved him. They knew he had a wonderful talent. Louis played on the boats that sailed up and down the river. He played in little towns and in big cities. Louis's horn had as many sounds as ten horns — sometimes slow and sweet; sometimes fast and hot, high and low. His music was always strong and exciting.“He does make wonderful music,” said the man who listened happily.“Yes,” said another man,“he makes that horn speak.” Then the music ended and the crowd cheered. Louis Armstrong spoke with tears in his eyes,“I think, my friends, you can listen to as much jazz as I can play. I thought jazz was my music, but now I understand it is ours. Immigrants to the coast of southern Appalachian Mountains of North America brought the music and instruments of the Old World along with them for nearly 300 years. They brought some of their most important valuables with them. To most of them this was an instrument. Early Scottish settlers enjoyed the violin because it could be played to sound sad or lively. The Irish violin, the German dulcimer (扬琴), the Italian mandolin, the Spanish guitar, and the West African banjo were the most common musical instruments.
The communication among musicians from different ethnic groups (族群) produced music unique to this region of North America. Appalachian string bands (弦乐队) of the early 20th century primarily consisted of the violin, guitar, and banjo. This early country music along with early recorded country music is often referred to as old time music.
According to Bill Malone in Country Music USA, country music was “introduced to the world as a southern phenomenon”. In the South, folk music was a combination of cultural types, combining musical traditions of a variety of ethnic groups in the region. For example, some instrumental pieces from Anglo Celtic immigrants were the basis of folk songs and ballads that form what is now known as old time music, from which country music descended. It is commonly thought that British and Irish folk music influenced the development of old time music. British and Irish arrivals to the Southern US included immigrants from Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and England.
When many people think or hear country music, they think of it as a creation of European Americans. However, a great deal of style — and of course, the banjo, a major instrument in most early American folk songs — came from African Americans. One of the reasons country music was created by African Americans, as well as European Americans, is because blacks and whites in rural communities in the south often worked and played together.

Jenny Lind, the daughter of a teacher of languages, was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1821. She is said to be able to repeat a song that she had heard only once at the age of three. At ten years of age she sang children's parts on the Stockholm stage. After turning 12 years of age, her upper notes lost their sweetness, and for four years she did not do much singing. Her love for music continued and she spent these years studying instrumental music and composition.
At the end of this period her voice had returned to its normal condition and for a year and a half she was the star of the Stockholm opera. Next, she gave a series of concerts and went to Paris for further study, but the French teacher did not appreciate her powers and Jenny returned to her native city.
When she was 23 years old, Jenny went to Dresden and when Queen Victoria visited that city the following year, she sang at the festivals held in the queen's honour. This opened the way to amazing success in other German cities. In 1847 she went to London and was warmly received. There she sang for the first time in concert.
Jenny Lind travelled to Paris to study with Manuel Garcia, a famous Spanish coach, who finally agreed to train her. Her husband, Otto Goldschmidt, was a famous German pianist who trained with Mendelssohn; they married in Boston while on tour in the US.
After her marriage, she sometimes appeared on the stage and usually at concerts given for charitable causes (慈善事业). She was deeply interested in these charitable causes and we can easily add to her title of singer that of philanthropist. Her later years were spent in London where she died in 1887. Her life and songs are a sweet memory for modern people.
