Henley Street, Stratford upon Avon
Tel: 01789 204016
Shakespeare's birthplace was the childhood home of William Shakespeare. Take a step back in time and see what life was like for the young Shakespeare growing up in Stratford upon Avon. The house has been exactly furnished, and includes both original and copy items similar to those which would have been there in the house when Shakespeare was a boy. Beautiful painted cloths hang on the walls, brightly colored fabrics fill the rooms and his father's glove workshop has been recreated. At the back of the house is a beautiful garden containing many plants, herbs and flowers mentioned in Shakespeare's plays.
The neighboring exhibition shows Shakespeare's life and focuses on many rare local items connected with him, as well as a copy of the first edition of his collected plays published in 1623.

Buying folk art paintings has been a passion of mine.I found some pieces recently. The problem was that I could only afford one and I was having trouble in deciding which one to buy.
The first painting was a work of Bill Dodge. He created it in 1962 and named it First Trolley To Van Nuys. The painting shows the center of a town, with a lot of people in the windows and on the street.
Thomas Chambers is one of America's most famous folk artists. The painting of him shows a fishing scene with villagers and boats. It may have great value in the future. But it doesn't suit my taste.
Another folk art piece was painted by Rev.Howard Finster in 1988.It is titled Howard in 1944.The smile on this portrait is very engaging (迷人的) and it makes me smile just as big.
Alligator Fisher is a folk art painting created in 1940.The blue of the bayou (海湾) is very calming and the trees give it a very Southern feel. There is a house in the painting and I like this one very much.It reminds me of Louisiana, where I was born.
A Letter from My Mother is one that I found during a journey. The look on the girl's face is so serious and sad.The painting itself is great; it just makes me feel sad.I had no idea where this folk art painting should hang.
At last, I decided to buy the one that can give me a good mood every day. What is more important than a good mood

It happens to most first time fish keepers. They run to a fish store, pick out the best looking fish, and get all the things they need for their tanks. Then they fill up their tanks and put their fish in the water. Over the course of the next week, their fish aren't looking so good. Then all of a sudden, all of their fish start to die off.
Luckily, there is an explanation. Ammonia (氨) and nitrite (亚硝酸盐) are toxic to fish. You see, keeping fish in a tank produces ammonia. If a fish is placed in a new tank, the tank won't be equipped with the ability to change that ammonia into a less harmful chemical. And that's why they die.
To avoid the whole failure, you have to understand a little something called the Nitrogen Cycle (氮循环). After ammonia is produced in a tank, a kind of bacterium that is naturally found in water (a bacterium that consumes ammonia and produces nitrite) reproduces itself to form a large enough area to change all ammonia into nitrite. As the concentration (浓度) of nitrite increases, the same thing happens to nitrite, which happened to ammonia. A group of bacteria that change nitrite into nitrate (硝酸盐) form in large numbers. The cycle takes about one week to several months, depending on your technique. When a tank reaches a point where it can change all ammonia and nitrite being produced in a tank to nitrate before they reach harmful concentrations, it has finished the Nitrogen Cycle — it is safe for fish.
So before you ever place a fish into a tank from now on, use some skills to make it do that first. To do so, slightly increase ammonia concentration of your tank. If after 24 hours, your tank has no mark of ammonia or nitrite, you can ensure that it's cycled. You just need to perform a partial water change and your tank is ready for fish.
8.What can we learn from Para. 1
A.It's really hard for people to keep fish well.
B.The author feels very sorry for those dead fish.
C.New fish keepers begin to raise fish in a hurry.
D.People have no idea how to use their tanks well.

C.Familiar. D.Beneficial.
10.What do we know about the Nitrogen Cycle
A.It makes sure of fish's safety.
B.It provides all the nutrition fish need.
C.It increases the concentration of ammonia.
D.It produces more chemicals to clean the tank.
11.Which question can't be answered in the text
A.What's the right way to raise fish in a new tank
B.What happens during the Nitrogen Cycle
C.Why are fish in a new tank likely to die
D.Why is nitrate less harmful to fish

One of the strangest features of motherhood is that the vast majority of mothers prefer to cradle their babies in the left arm. Why should this be The obvious explanation is that the majority of mothers are right handed and they wish to keep their right hand free.Unfortunately, this explanation cannot apply, because left handed mothers also favor their left arm for holding their babies. The precise figures are 83 percent for right handed mothers and 73 percent for left handed mothers.
The most likely explanation is that the mother's heart is on the left side and, by holding the baby in her left arm, she is unconsciously bringing her baby closer to the sound of the heart beat. This is the sound the baby heard when it was inside the mother's womb and which is therefore an association with peace, comfort and security.
Tests were carried out in nurseries where some babies were played the recorded sound of a human heart beat, and, sure enough, went to sleep twice as quickly as the others. We also know that the sound of mother's heart is quite audible inside the womb and that the unborn baby has a well developed hearing.
It is interesting that fathers show less of this left side bias (偏爱) than mothers, suggesting that the human female is better programmed than her partner for carrying a baby. Alternatively, she may unconsciously adjust her holding behavior to make baby fell more secure. Some new observations on our closest animals' relatives, the chimpanzees and gorillas, have revealed that they also show a strong bias for holding their babies on the left side. The precise figures were 84 percent for chimpanzees and 82 percent for gorillas, remarkably close to the human percentages.
Recently a possible additional value in cradling babies on the left side has been suggested. It has been pointed out that, because, the two sides of the brain are concerned with different aspects of behavior, it is possible that the mother, in cradling the baby to her left, is showing the baby her “best side”.It is claimed that the emotions are expressed more strongly on the left side of the human face and that she therefore gives the baby a better chance to read her emotional mood changes as it gazes up at her. Furthermore, the mother's left eye and ear are more tuned into emotional changes in her baby than her right eye and ear would be. So in addition to the baby's seeing the more expressive parts of its mother, there is further advantage that the mother herself is more sensitive to the left held baby. This may sound far fetched, but just possibly, it could provide a slight extra benefit for those mothers displaying the strange one sided bias when cradling their infants.
How does a bias occur Do the mothers have an instinctive preference for it, or do they learn it by trial and error, unconsciously adjusting the position of the babies until the babies are calmer The surprising answer is that it seems to be the baby not the mother who controls the bias. Observation of new born infants when they were only a few hours old revealed that they come into the world with a pre programmed tendency to turn their head to the right. If the new born baby is gently held in a dead central position and then released, it naturally swings to the right far more often than to the left. This happens in nearly 70 percent of babies. This may be only a part of explanation, because the holding bias is 80 percent not 70 percent, but it adds a further intriguing chapter to the story.

13.The underlined word “audible”in Paragraph 3 means ________.
A.soft B.clear
C.weak D.distant
14.What's the main idea of Paragraph 5
A.The left side of the human face expresses emotions more strongly than the right.
B.A mother's left eye and ear are more sensitive to the emotional changes in her baby.
C.A baby may be more able to “read” its mother's emotions than was previously believed.
D.Holding her baby in the left arm may improve a mother's emotional communication with it.
15.What is the author's tone when he discusses why most mothers cradle their babies in the left arm

语篇解读本文讨论的是为什么大多数母亲都是左手抱婴儿。

15.What is the author's tone when he discusses why most mothers cradle their babies in the left arm
