To make sure of greener development, China will combine efforts in environmental protection and ecological restoration according to the country's newly approved guideline (指导方针) for environmental protection, part of the 13th Five Year Plan (2016-2020).
China surpassed its goal in environmental protection for the 12th Five Year Plan (2011-2015), with carbon intensity (强度) dropping by 20 percent (the intended target is 17 percent). It is a major contribution to worldwide efforts against climate change, officials said.
The new guideline stresses efforts to restore nature while reducing industrial damage to the environment. The goal is to achieve a more environmentally friendly way of living, considerable reduction in major pollutant emissions and a sounder ecological system by 2020. A good environment is a necessary part in improving people's living standards, officials said.
Statistics of a report from several Chinese universities show that more than one third of the country's industrial waste water flows directly into rivers and lakes. Water pollution within China has affected the environment, society and agriculture. It has resulted in huge economic losses. Air pollution is also one of the major problems in China. Heavy haze usually covers North and East China. Environmental issues are becoming a barrier to China's development. Besides, heavy metal pollution in soil in China is so serious that it requires us to act immediately. 10 percent of the total farmland of China has heavy metal polluted soil. The heavy metal in soil will enter into humans' food chain through grain and agricultural products.
The rapid industrialization of agriculture, expansion of the chemical industry, and the need to produce cheap forms of energy have caused the continuous release of man made organic chemicals into natural ecosystems. The guideline focuses on ecological restoration by controlling more types of pollutants than before.

Antarctic seabirds are breeding (繁殖) later, because thinner sea ice is causing their food supplies to decline, a new study says. The birds, which nest in East Antarctica, have delayed their spring arrival by an average of nine days and egg laying by an average of two days over the past 50 years, according to polar researchers from the French National Center for Scientific Research in Villiers en Bois, France. Study authors Christophe Barbrand and Henri Weimerskirch attribute this later breeding activity to decrease in sea ice caused by climate change.
The researchers say the disappearing sea ice, combined with a longer sea ice season, has interfered with the birds' breeding cycle by reducing the amount of krill (磷虾) and other prey (猎物) available in early spring in Antarctica.Because Antarctica's seasons are opposite those in the Northern Hemisphere, spring on the icy continent begins in October.
The study is based on data collected at seabird colonies between 1950 and 2004 in Adélie Land, on the eastern edge of the frozen continent.
The findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Of the nine species studied, some arrived up to 30 days later than they had in previous years.
Despite much later arrivals, the birds are laying their eggs at pretty much the same time as they had in the past.In the most extreme cases, birds were laying their eggs an average of 3.7 days later in the season than they were 50 years ago.

Good Money Habits
It's the right time for a financial plan. Most plans are made in extreme excitement — when you get a pay rise, or after reading a self help book. __1__ Here are some tips that will help you stay the course all year through.
·Take baby steps.
The other day a colleague said,“I have decided to wake up at 6:30 a.m., starting tomorrow.” But she usually woke up at 8:30. Two hours earlier is a difficult task. After a few days I asked her how she was progressing. Her disappointed smile said it all. __2__ If she had considered pushing the clock by 5 minutes every 10 days, she'd reach her 6:30 a.m. goal in eight months. Get the idea Now simply replace time with savings.
·Tell apart a plan and a habit.
We make plans with a conscious mind, and habits are formed so that eventually they are dealt with by our subconscious mind; and they stick. So don't be in a rush to invest (投资) your money. Go with a systematic investment plan (SIP) of a mutual fund or start a recurring deposit (RD,定期存款). As human beings, we want to progress. __3__
·Get your family's support.
__4__ If your daughter knows that she can only eat out one weekend a month because you're putting money away for a European trip in 2018, she will be much more cooperative and feel she is a part of the decision.
·__5__
Link your investment to a particular financial goal; your commitment to it will be stronger. A client decided to open an RD, but she seemed directionless about the investment. Once we suggested that she link it to her daughter's education fund, she immediately increased the amount she was investing. When you name your investment, the goal takes on a greater meaning.
A.Give your goals a meaning.
B.The charm dies down, and so does the enthusiasm.
C.It's a good idea to involve your family in your financial plan.
D.Look at them as a promise to yourself, a promise that needs to be honored.
E.I suggested that she set her alarm for 5 minutes before her regular time.
F.If you know this well in advance, you are less likely to buy an expensive mobile phone on an urge.
G.Once a habit is formed, we want to move ahead and will most probably increase the investment amount without any encouragement.

I was going to die in Antarctica. I was certain. An image of my frost covered body, pale and lifeless, filled my mind as I glanced around. In all directions the empty wilderness of Antarctica stretched away from me, the only feature on the landscape was the division between snow and sky. I gazed sadly at my team. They were rapidly disappearing over the horizon.
I was leading an expedition (探险队) attempting to reach the South Pole. The team was made up of ordinary women from all around the world — from Jamaica, India, Singapore and Cyprus — many of whom had never seen snow, or spent a night in a tent before we set off. Our aim was to be the most international all female team to reach the South Pole.
As I watched, the rest of the team had marched on, unaware that I was not with them. By the time I realised that my sledge was firmly stuck, the team were already a long way ahead of me. I called out to Era, my teammate from Brunei. “Era!Stop!”
Getting no response I called again, but my shouts were carried away in the opposite direction by the wind. Seconds passed. Nothing. I was gradually being left alone, completely defenseless against the fatally low temperatures of Antarctica.
My strength increased when I thought of a cold, lonely death. I pulled again my sledge, which moved a little. I removed the ice with my ski pole and boot, desperately trying to break the sledge free. The sledge shot forward, knocking me off balance. I struggled to my feet and set off after the team.
I caught up just as Reena, my teammate from India, looked behind her and noticed there was one person missing. She swung around on her skis in shock and spotted me in the near distance.
As we continued, my panic slowly faded. For the rest of the day each of the team was glancing over their shoulder every few minutes. They were not going to risk losing me again.

I don't think I can recall a time when I wasn't aware of the beauty of the ocean.Growing up in Australia, I had the good fortune of having the sea at my side. The first time I went to Halfmoon Bay, I suddenly had the feeling of not being able to feel the ground with my feet anymore.
For my 10th birthday, my sister and I were taken out to the Great Barrier Reef. There were fish in different colors, caves and layers of coral. They made such an impression on me.When I learned that only 1 percent of Australia's Coral Sea was protected, I was shocked.Australian marine (海洋的) life is particularly important because the reefs have more marine species than any other country on earth. But sadly, only 45% of the world's reefs are considered healthy.
This statistic is depressing, so it's important for us to do everything to protect them. The hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete ecosystem has led me to take action.I've become involved with the Protect Our Coral Sea activity, which aims to create the largest marine park in the world. It would serve as a place where the ocean's species will all have a safe place forever.

In summer, people around the world seek rest and relaxation on a beach. To meet the need, Trip Advisor publishes a list of the world's best beaches.
Baia do Sancho, Brazil
Its water is calm and clear. Its sand is fine and soft. But getting to Baia do Sancho is not so easy. It is on Fernando de Noronha, a volcanic island more than 300 kilometers off Brazil's coast. Travelers must take a plane or boat from major cities in northern Brazil to get there. Getting there involves walking along steep, rocky cliffs and then climbing down a ladder.
Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos
While Baia do Sancho is difficult to get to, Trip Advisor's second ranked beach could not be much easier for tourists to reach. Travelers to the islands often choose to stay at oceanfront hotels right next to Grace Bay. This beach has impossibly clean and clear waters and pure white sand. Its calm waters make it extremely safe for swimming.
Eagle Beach, Aruba
To get to the third best beach, head south to the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba. Eagle Beach has clear, calm waters and soft white sand. It offers visitors a chance to try different water sports. Eagle Beach may be best known, however, for its dramatic sunsets. On clear nights, the sky turns red, orange, and purple.
Playa Paraiso, Cuba
Trip Advisor's fourth best beach is also in the Caribbean. Playa Paraiso is on Cayo Largo, an island off Cuba's southern coast. Paraiso has a fun, laid back restaurant for those who wish to eat and drink. There is little else on the beach. People come here for the sugar like sand and calm waters filled with colorful wildlife.
Siesta Key, United States
Florida's Siesta Key is a low lying island. The scientist known as Dr. Beach recently named Siesta Key the best beach in America. It offers calm and clean waters. Visitors of all ages go to Siesta Key when the tide is low to find beautiful, large and, sometimes, rare seashells.

The Arctic is a polar region. It surrounds the North Pole.
Like Antarctica, the Arctic is a land of ice and snow. Antarctica holds the record for a low temperature reading — 125 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. Reading of 85 degrees below zero is common in Antarctica. Winter temperatures average 30 degrees below zero in the Arctic. At the South Pole the winter average is about 73 degrees below zero.
One thing alone makes it almost impossible for men to live in Antarctica and in parts of the Arctic. This one thing is the low temperature — the killing chill of far North and the polar South.
To survive, men must wear the warmest possible clothing. They must build windproof shelters. They must keep heaters going at all times. Not even for a moment can they be unprotected against the below zero temperatures.
Men have a way of providing for themselves. Polar explorers wrap themselves in warm coats and furs. The cold makes life difficult. But the explorers can stay alive.
What about animals? Can they survive?Do we find plants?Do we find life in the Arctic and in Antarctica Yes, we do. There is life in the oceans. There is life on land.
Antarctica, as we have seen, is a cold place indeed. But this has not always been the case. Expedition (探险) scientists have discovered that Antarctica has not always been a frozen continent. At one time the weather in Antarctica may have been much like our own.
Explorers have discovered coal in Antarctica. This leads them to believe that Antarctica at one time was a land of swamps and forests. Heat and moisture must have kept the trees in the forests alive.
语篇解读:文章首先介绍了南极和北极的气温,然后介绍了人类与动物在极地的情况以及科学家对南极过去环境情况的猜想。

Biologist Robert Pitman and his colleagues tracked orcas, or killer whales, and humpback whales off the coast of Western Australia. To research further, the scientists attached a tracker to a female orca, which allowed them to use satellites to monitor her movements. They followed her for six days. During that time, the orca attacked eight young humpback whales. During the seven attacks, the orca killed the humpback whale calf (幼兽) on three occasions.
But the story doesn't end there. Humpback whales themselves are popularly thought to be large but generally, passive creatures. Pitman's study findings may let people think otherwise.
When chased by orcas, humpback whales are known to try to outswim orcas. They are thought to do this at high speed so that the orcas can't keep up. On some occasions, the humpback whales sought out protection. They swam to shallow water, nearby reefs, or even under the researchers' boats. These ways often reduced the attack. But at other times, the humpback whales decided to stay and fight.
As the orcas approached, the mother humpback would sometimes move her calf to her side, or lift it out of the water using her head or flippers. She also blew huge breaths of air to disturb the orcas, and lunged or charged at them, slashing (劈) and slapping her tail and flippers. Perhaps most surprisingly, humpback whales also have adult “escorts (护卫队)” that try to protect calves that are not their own, joining the mother in defending the smaller whale. These escort whales either charged at the orcas, or placed themselves between the attackers and calves, slashing their tails and flippers.
Despite the efforts of the mother whales and escorts, the orcas were more often than not successful in their attacks. But the presence of the escorts did reduce how many times a whale calf was killed.
