I started to learn English from the first grade. That year I was six. In class I learned basic phrases for greeting and describing objects. I don't have much memory for the first year of English learning. The only thing that I still remember is reading vocabulary list. A classmate of mine who was good at English would lead the whole class to read the list. One of the new words that I learned that year was “earth”. “The earth orbits the sun,” he said in Chinese. Every time we came to the word “earth”, he would repeat that sentence. I was secretly admiring him because he knew the earth orbits the sun.
My family moved when I was in my second grade, and I transferred (转学) to a private school. My English class continued. Luckily I could use the same series of text books.
I stayed in the same private school for my junior high school, which is from the 7th to the 9th grade. In junior high school, I hardly felt my English skill improved because the first English class here was still titled “Good Morning” and the content was still basic greetings.
Following was one year of high school life: a_different_school,_the_same_story.
Then my family moved again, and I began to really use English. We came to America. I attended a couple years of high school, and now I'm in college. I learn to write essays and start to read books in English. I can see my progress. However, I still have a lot of space to improve. In writing, the flow between sentences isn't good and I'm still using basic words. In speaking, maybe because I hang out with Chinese speaking friends too much, it takes me time to think when telling long stories.
4.In Grade One, the author admired that classmate because he ________.
A.could speak two languages
B.had a very wide vocabulary
C.often led the whole class to read
D.knew about the earth and the sun
5.How did the author most probably feel during the first English class in junior high school
A.Moved. B.Interested.
C.Disappointed. D.Relaxed.
6.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 means in senior high school the author ________.
A.didn't live a very difficult life
B.liked her new school very much
C.learned English in a different way
D.had to learn simple English all over again
7.What do we learn about the author now
A.She is looked down upon by others.
B.She still isn't very fluent in English.
C.She has no chance to speak Chinese now.
D.She likes practicing English through telling long stories.

Sunitha Suresh was a college student when her grandmother had a major operation and was put in intensive care (特别护理) with three other patients. This meant her family couldn't always be with her. They decided to put her favorite Indian music on an iPod, so she could listen around the clock.
Sunitha could see the music relaxed her grandmother and made her feel less anxious, but she wondered if she also felt less pain. That would make sense because anxiety can make people more sensitive to pain. At the time Sunitha was majoring in biomedical engineering at Northwestern University where her father, Santhanam Suresh, is a professor. So father and daughter decided to work together on a study.
It was a small study, with 60 patients between 9 and 14 years old taking part in it. All the patients, who were children, had big operations that required them to stay in hospital for at least a couple of days. Right after their operations, the patients took medicine to control pain. The next day they were divided into three groups. One group listened to 30 minutes of music of their choice, one listened to 30 minutes of stories of their choice and one listened to 30 minutes of silence via noise canceling headphones.
To measure pain, the researchers presented a smiling, frowning (皱眉) and crying face. The children pointed to which picture best showed their level of pain before and after they listened to music, stories and silence. After a 30 minute session, the children who listened to music or stories reduced their pain burden by 1 point on a 10 point scale (级别) compared to the children who listened to silence. That might not sound like much, but Sunitha says it equals to pain medication like Advil or Tylenol.
Children don't tolerate such medication as well as adults. They are smaller and are more likely to suffer side effects from pain medication such as trouble breathing and feeling of disgust. So the less pain medication, the better.
8.What made Sunitha start the study
A.Her grandmother's desire for music.
B.Her majoring in biomedical engineering.
C.Her grandmother's listening to music after the operation.
D.Her sympathy for patients who suffered from illnesses.
9.How did Sunitha and her father draw the conclusion
A.By observing. B.By making comparison.
C.By asking questions. D.By analyzing causes.
10.What do we know about the research
A.It is of greater benefit to children.
B.It should also be conducted on adults.
C.It shows children suffer more from pain medication.
D.It finds more and more children are on pain medication.
11.What may be the best title for the text
A.Reaching for your playlist to ease pain
B.Sunitha does an experiment with her father
C.Sunitha's grandmother likes to listen to music
D.Stopping using pain medication on children

Public libraries have had another bad year. They are like local railways. People like having them around, and are angry if they close. But as for using them, there is so little time these days.
To the US historian Matthew Battles the library is a metaphor (隐喻) for the land of chance, a place where, lost in the piles, new Americans could “dream of personal success, unaided by unnamed others, a stage with a mirror for backdrop (背景幕布) that reflects only the reader”. In Britain, the library was a grammar school, a teach yourself academy, a way of learning.
Digitization has changed everything. The public library is no longer a place sacred to knowledge. Its walls have been bombed open. So much rubbish is said and written about the death of books. Five years ago, when Amazon ebook sales were higher than those of paperback copies, it was assumed the book was dying. Print was yesterday, one more victim of the great digital wipeout. But Waterstones last year stopped selling Kindles and changed the shelf space to physical books. It saw a 5% rise in sales. Though the bookshop has suffered, the book has not.
But these are buyers, not borrowers. The library must rediscover its specialness. This strength lies not in books, but in its readers, in their desire to gather, share with each other, hear writers and experience books with a group. It is in plays, concerts, comedy, lectures, debates, quizzes, performances of every sort. It should combine coffee shops, book exchanges, playgroups, art galleries, museums and performances.
Ever since the days of Alexandria, the library has been the palace of the mind, the “University of All”. The Internet has removed its complete control of knowledge, but cannot copy its sense of place, its joy of human gathering.
12.What is stressed by mentioning Matthew Battles
A.The meaning of the American Dream.
B.The role of libraries in Americans' life.
C.The things people can learn in a library.
D.The decrease in the number of libraries.
13.What did people use to think about books
A.Digital technology left books dying.
B.A lot of books were becoming rubbish.
C.Physical books took up too much space.
D.Books in libraries were better than e books.
14.How can the library gain its popularity again
A.By offering readers better books.
B.By holding live events for readers.
C.By buying more books to fill its shelves.
D.By providing relaxed atmosphere for readers.
15.What might be the most suitable title for the text
A.Libraries are dying but not for books
B.Libraries will have no physical books
C.Libraries are not about books any more
D.Libraries play new roles in modern times

We usually don't mind when people call us by positive nicknames (绰号). __16__ But when people call us by cruel nicknames, it can be difficult to get them to stop. So what should you do
Ask your friends to give it a rest. Maybe you tripped (绊倒) over your feet a few times, and your friends started calling you klutz, thinking that you don't really mind. __17__
Leave a nickname behind. Sometimes, life gives us a chance to start fresh. __18__ If you're moving from elementary school to middle school, let your friends know that you don't want to go by your old nickname.
Ignore those who call you by a nickname. If the kids calling you by a bad nickname aren't your friends, you should do your best to ignore them. __19__ It may be hard to pretend that it doesn't hurt, but if you get angry or obviously upset, it will just encourage them to use the nickname all the time.
__20__ Remember that if you have a bad nickname now, you probably won't always be stuck with it. Just look at Elvis Presley! When he first started singing onstage, he wiggled (摆动) his hips so much that cruel critics and the audience nicknamed him Elvis The Pelvis. He never stopped wiggling. People soon found it impossible to ignore his talent and began to call him The King of Rock & Roll.
A.If it does bother you, tell them.
B.Believe that things will change.
C.If the kids refuse to stop, talk to your teacher.
D.It feels good when these nicknames get repeated.
E.Although words can be hurtful, they can't change who you really are.
F.The chance can be a good time to get rid of a nickname that you don't like.
G.If you act like they aren't hurting you, they'll eventually get bored and stop.

Good afternoon, everyone. As we all know, English has been widely used in the world for a long time as a communication tool. I would like to tell you some interesting facts about American English and British English.
Basically, American English and British English are the same when it comes to the usage. They have no differences in most cases and they have much in common. However, they still vary from each other in spelling, pronunciation, grammar and so on. Despite the fact that there are some differences between American English and British English, people from the two countries seldom have difficulty understanding each other. Actually, it is very easy to tell them apart.
Thank you.
