三、阅读理解(每小题2分,满分24分)
A
An old man went to live with his son, his daughter-in-law, and his four-year-old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was very poor, and he couldn't walk steadily(平稳地).The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Rice often dropped on the floor.
The son and the daughter-in-law became angry with the old man, so they put a small table in the corner. There, the grandfather ate alone, while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the table. Since the grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.
The four-year-old child watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with a piece of wood on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making " The boy answered, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food when I grow up." The four-year-old boy smiled and went back to work. The words struck the parents so they were in silence. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks(脸颊).Though no word was spoken, they both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took his father's hand gently and led him back to the family table.
( )1. The word "struck" in Paragraph 3 refers to .
A. annoyed B. worried C. scared D. shocked
( )2. Why did the husband lead the old man back to the family table

I was once hired(雇用)by an American bank. I received a letter from the head. And when I read the sentence "Dear John, I am quite pleased that you have decided to join us." I felt a bit sad because of that "quite". I thought he was saying "we're kind of(有点)pleased you decided to join us although(虽然)I wish we could hire someone else." Then I found that in American English "quite" sometimes means "very", while in British English it is another way of saying "kind of".
So the first lesson about working in other countries is to learn the language. I don't just mean the words people speak. It is body language, dress, manners, ideas and so on. The way people do things highlights many of the differences we see between cultures.
Some of these differences may be only on the surface(表面)-dress, food-while others may be deeper and take longer to deal with(处理).Mostly, it is just a question of getting used to the differences and accepting them.
Some of the differences may be an improvement. However, other differences can be troubling, like being on time. If you invite people to a party at 7 o'clock, your guests will think it polite to turn up exactly on time in Germany, five minutes early in the American Midwest,an hour early in Japan, 15 minutes afterwards in the UK, up to an hour afterwards in Italy and some time in the evening in Greece. I do not want to use the word "late" because there is nothing wrong with the times people arrive. It is simply the accepted thing to do in their own country.
( )1.The author was unhappy when he received a letter from the bank because he thought .
A. the American bank didn't think much of him
B. the American bank might hire another person
C. it was difficult to get used to American culture
D. it was hard to understand Americans
( )2 .What does the writer think we should do with most cultural differences
A. Ask the native people for help.
B. Understand and accept them.
C. Do things in your own way.
D. Do everything like native people.
( )3. Which of the following statements(陈述)is NOT TRUE
A. The writer thinks "language" is more than the words people say.
B. The writer thinks it may be OK for some people to be late for a party.
C. The writer didn't understand the letter he received correctly at first.
D. The writer thinks the differences between cultures are mostly on the surface.

Today, an increasing number of people are always looking at their mobile phones with their heads down. These people are called the "Heads-down Tribe(低头族)". Are you a heads-down tribe member Heads-down tribe members now can be seen everywhere.
More and more traffic accidents are happening because more drivers use mobile phones when they are driving. In order to make drivers pay more attention to driving, some new traffic rules have been made. For example, people who use mobile phones while driving in Taiwan will be fined(罚款).Car drivers and motorcyclists who break the traffic rule will be fined NT$ 3,000 and NT$ 1,000 respectively(分别地).
As we can see above, using mobile phones may cause accidents and even cost a lot of money. Also, more and more interesting and strange facts happen to the "Heads-down Tribe". Let's have a look at an interesting TV report. A man in America kept using his mobile phone on his way home. As a result, he knocked into a big lost bear. When he lifted his eyes from the phone, he was so afraid that he turned around and ran away quickly. Another fact is that we can often see people in the restaurant eating face to face but looking at their own mobile phones. It's strange that they don't talk to the ones who sit opposite to them during the meal. Some of them even have fun communicating with others on the phone.
Mobile phones are helpful and necessary tools for modern life. Are mobile phones good or bad It depends on how people use them. Let's be "healthy" users and try to be the“Heads-up Tribe".

Why do people smoke One reason is that people become addicted(成瘾) to cigarettes. The addictive substance(物质)in cigarettes is nicotine(尼古丁). When people smoke, the nicotine goes right into the blood stream and makes people feel comfortable. A smoker's body gets used to the nicotine, and if he stops smoking, he feels nervous. Many smokers try to stop smoking but because of the addiction to nicotine they feel so uncomfortable that they often find it too difficult to do so .
Another reason is that people simply enjoy smoking. Having a cigarette for many people means taking a break. For some people smoking becomes part of certain social rituals (礼仪), for example, sending the cigarette after dinner. Many people enjoy smoking because it gives them something to do with their hands. Reaching for a cigarette, lighting it and flicking (弹掉) the ashes are special comfort in a situation where they feel nervous.
Many people also like the taste of tar (焦油) in cigarettes. However, it is the tar that causes cancer. While governments and health experts have tried to get people to give up smoking completely, cigarette manufacturers (生产商) have tried to keep selling them by producing cigarettes with less tar. Many people in western countries have welcomed these cigarettes since they found it hard to stop smoking and wanted to reduce the danger to their health.

There are several ways you can find out about the countries and places you wish to visit. You can talk to friends who travelled to places; you can go and see a colour film about them; or you can read travel books.
It seems that there are three kinds of travel books, the first are those that give a personal, subjective (主观的)idea of travels which the writer has got himself. Those books can be useful if the writers share their travelling experience with others. The second kind are those books which give objective (客观的)information of things to be done and seen. If a cultured person has written such a book about the facts of a place, then it is more useful. The third kind are those books which are called "a guide" to some place or other. If they are good, they will describe and explain the place in detail. Like the first kind, they can be interesting and exciting. But their main purpose is to help the reader plan his travel in the most practical way.
Whatever kind of travel book you choose, you must make sure that the book does not describe everything as interesting, exciting or fantastic. You must also keep an open eye on its date of publication(出版)because travel is a very practical matter and many thing change quickly in the 21st century. Finally, you should make sure that it’s easy to find the useful information for your travel.

At home Thomas had a dinner party to show the forks to his friends. When he wanted to eat the steak (牛排), he took out a fork as the Italians did in Italy. His friends were bored when they saw this. He told them what the fork was. They all said that Italians were very strange people because the fork was not easy to use at all. Thomas tried to prove (证明) that his friends were wrong, so he began to show that it was easy to use the fork. But the first piece of steak he took with the fork fell to the floor. His friends began to laugh at him and he had to take the fork away.
However, only fifty years later, people in England began to use forks.

Some British and American people like to invite friends for a meal at home. You should not be upset (不安的) if your English friends don't invite you home. It doesn't mean they don't like you. Sometimes they just can't afford to do so.
Dinner parties usually start between 7 and 8 p.m. and end at about 11. Ask your hosts what time you should arrive. It's polite to bring flowers, chocolates or a bottle of wine as a gift.
Usually the evening starts with drinks and snacks. If you want to be extra polite, say how much you like the room, or the pictures on the wall. But remember it's not polite to ask how much things cost.
In many families, the husband sits at one of the table and the wife sits at the other end. They eat with their guests.
You'll probably start the meal with soup or something small, then you'll have meat or fish with vegetables, and then dessert (甜点), followed by coffee, it's polite to finish everything on your plate and to take more ifyou want it.
Did you enjoy the evening Call your hosts the next day, or write them a short "thank you" letter. British and American people like to say "thank you, thank you, thank you" all the time!

"Mabel, Mabel, strong and able, keep your elbows off the table". I was only 3 or 4 years old when my mom taught me this little rhyme (雅韵诗). She taught it to teach me polite table manners.
I wish learning table manners as an adult were that easy. However, each country has its own table manners and knowing all about them can give you a headache.
For example, knowing how much food to eat can be tricky (复杂的). In China I quickly learned that if I finished all the food, others would invite us to have more. It is polite to leave a bit of food on the dishes. In Finland, however, your host would be troubled if you left any food on your plate.
If you're in America and you do want more food, don't reach across the table for it. That would be considered uncivilized (没有教养的). Instead you need to ask someone to pass you the dish.
What would you do if you walked into a restaurant and all the tables were full In Germany or China, you might share a table with strangers. People in America, however, like more personal space better. They may think you strange if you sit at their table.
And after your meal, should you leave a tip In some countries a tip is included in the meal price. In America, you need to leave extra money on the table to thank your server for the service.
Before you travel to a new country, be sure to pick up a good book on culture and customs. Take time to watch how the local people act and imitate them.
