The price meant its value had risen more than 2, 000 percent in six years. The work, Eagle standing on pine tree with four character couplet (对联), measures about 2.6 metres by 1 metre. It was the second highest price paid for an artwork on the mainland. A Song dynasty work by Huang Tingjian was sold for 436.8 million yuan in 2010. Qi's painting was finished in 1946 when Qi was 86, and was his largest work. With a starting price of 88 million yuan, it attracted nearly 50 bids (出价) in half an hour. Shanghai businessman Liu Yiqian said that the work had belonged to him and had cost less than 20 million yuan in 2005. The auction company said the work was brought back to the mainland after being bought from a private owner in San Francisco six years ago.
China ranked first in global art sales last year, ahead of the United States and Britain. Four Chinese artists were among the top 10 in worldwide sales: Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian, Xu Beihong and Fu Baoshi. Qi's works ranked second in sales to Pablo Picasso's last year. Qi was born into a peasant family in Hunan in 1864. He taught himself to paint and focused on nature including plants, insects, birds and fish. He is mostly well known for his paintings of shrimps. In 1953, he was elected president of the Association of Chinese Artists. He died in Beijing in 1957.

Ⅵ.阅读理解
Paper cutting is a very special visual art of Chinese handicrafts. One saying is that it originated from the religious ceremony of offerings. The ancient people cut papers into animals or people. They either buried them with the dead or burned them on the funerals, wishing that things that paper stands for could be with the dead. After hundreds of years' development, now they have become a very popular means of decoration among country folk, especially women.
It is easy to learn about cutting a piece of paper but very difficult to master it with perfection.Beginners need only a knife and paper. For craftsman, they need knives and gravers of various types to make complicated (复杂的) patterns. For complicated patterns, people first pasted the pattern on the paper and then used various kinds of knives to make it.No mistake can be made during the process otherwise the work would fail.
Paper cutting covers nearly all topics, from flowers, birds, animals, legendary people, figures in classic novels, to types of facial make up in Beijing Opera.Paper cutting has various styles in different parts of China.
In the past, women living in the countryside gathered in their free time to make paper cutting, which is a way to judge their skillfulness. As society develops, fewer and fewer still regard it as a profession. At present, there are factories and associations for paper cutting in China.Exhibitions and exchanges are held regularly and books of this kind are published.Paper cutting has changed from decoration to a kind of art.At the same time, paper cutting also appears in cartoons, on stage, in magazines or in TV series.

Due to the high cost of energy and the need to preserve nature, designing a building with green aims and sustainable (可持续的) energy sources is a necessity in today's world. There are many different things that go into the design and construction of a green building.
First, the site of the building must be taken into account in order to create the most efficient design for that area. The place of the sun, the height of surrounding trees as well as the positions and height of surrounding buildings must be looked at in detail in order to get the largest amount of natural light. Natural lighting is a good way to keep persons feeling awake and refreshed.
Furthermore, the materials that are used during the construction are also important. Using recycled materials will help you cut down costs as well as help the environment. Another great way to help the environment is by using materials that are made locally so as to get rid of the transportation costs and usage of energy that they require to be delivered. High value insulating (起隔热作用的) materials should be used in the walls and ceilings in order to keep the natural heat or air, reducing the rate of running the building's air conditioners and thus saving money in energy costs.
In addition, some green designs also can be added to the top of the roof. One of the important green designs is the roof garden. On tall buildings or buildings in areas that have large population, the roof garden allows for a natural environment in a city. Roof gardens also allow for a longer lifetime of the roof and are a great way to catch extra water which can be used to fill toilets inside the building. We can also put equipment on the top of the buildings which makes use of the solar power and wind power to create electricity.
Last but not least, advances in technology play an important part in the green building. Our living and working conditions have benefited from high technology, and as a result, so has our environment.

French painter Paul Gauguin was born in Paris in 1848 and then moved to Peru with his family when he was only a child. When he turned 17, he went to sea. He returned to Paris after six years.
He did not immediately become an artist. He chose to settle in Paris and learn to become a stockbroker (股票经纪人). Several years later, Paul gave up his career to devote his life to painting in order to show the simple beauty he saw in the lives of primitive (原始的) peoples. He was quite used to success and believed that he would succeed in painting. Unfortunately, his wife saw it as an unnecessary hobby and never forgave him for his “selfish” decision.
Paul had always enjoyed the art of the French artists known as the impressionists (印象派画家). He took up painting right away and later he exhibited his works with other impressionists. However, the reality of living an artist's life shocked him. He enjoyed his former comforts so much that he had difficulty getting used to his new life in poverty. In 1886, he decided to leave Paris and live in Brittany. After a year, he decided to travel to Panama where he worked as a worker. Then he went to Martinique, where he lived and painted in freedom. However, after a year of living in Martinique, he was forced to return to Brittany, penniless and quite ill.
In 1888, he visited another famous artist, Vincent van Gogh. Paul slowly broke away from the impressionist movement and painted Vision after the Sermon. This painting was important in his career because it led a new style. It was the beautiful surroundings of Brittany and his voyages that led to his own unique style. Paul Gauguin devoted his time to painting in pure and bright colors.
After many years of poverty and sickness, Paul Gauguin died from heart failure in 1903.

Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand — he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him.
What visional (视觉的) artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experience into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that feel certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us.Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors,or have felt the delight which they brought to the artists.
Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and repose (静态).
Their choices show that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, and that they contain beautiful sights.Contemporary artists might say that they only choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern that there is nothing more in it.Yet even they do choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects. If one painter chooses to paint a bad leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing (强调) something — all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.

Imagine looking for your lost dog.You step into a cave. But instead of the dog, you find beautiful cave paintings. You see paintings of horses, deer, and bison (野牛) that were drawn in black, brown, red and yellow.Your first question would probably be “Who did this?”
This is what happened to four French boys in 1940.They found the Lascaux caves. The paintings the boys discovered in those caves are about 17,000 years old. They were drawn by the ancient people called Cro Magnons.
Cro Magnons looked much like people of today. They used tools, such as fishing nets. But their art was extremely good. The main cave at Lascaux is called Great Hall of Bulls, which has a picture of bulls and horses in many colours. The largest animal is 18 feet long. There are smaller animals, such as bison, stags and a bear. There is also a strange spotted two horned (两只角的) animal.
To the left of the main cave are the most famous paintings that are the drawings of animals in many different colours. One painting is called Little Horses. On the ceiling are horses and cows. The most unusual sight may be in the Shaft of the Dead Man where there is a rhinoceros (犀牛), a carefully drawn dead man, an injured bison and a bird.
Why did Cro Magnon artists do these beautiful drawings on cave walls Did the drawings call upon some magic power Did the Cro Magnon people hope that the drawings would bring good luck There is one thing the paintings seem to tell us.The Cro Magnons were interested in the world. They looked at beauty and they understood it.
