A
Astronomy is the oldest science known to man.Thousands of years ago man looked at the stars and wondered about the heavens. But man was limited by what he could see with his eyes alone.
The Greeks studied astronomy over 2,000 years ago. They could see the size, color, and brightness of stars. They could see their places in the sky. They watched the stars move as the seasons changed. But the Greeks had no tools to help them study the starry heavens.
Each new tool added to the files of astronomy;it helped man reach out into space.Until there were telescopes(望远镜),man knew little about the moon. They did not know that the planet called Saturn(土星)had rings around it.Their sight was so limited that they could not see all the planets. In the early 1700s,people thought there were only six planets.
Before the spectroscope(分光镜),man did not know what kind of gases is in the sun or other stars.Without the radio telescope(电望远镜)we did not know that radio noises come from far out in space.
Today, astronomy is a growing science. We have learned more in the last fifty years than in the whole history of astronomy.
56The passage mainly tells us .
A.the spectroscope helps man know what kind of gases is in the sun and other stars
B.there are nine planets in space
C.there was much noise in space
D.science can’t grow fast without modern technology

B
From boyhood he was interested in Astronomy, and while at Cambridge he would sit up at night to watch the stars. But he was dissatisfied with the telescopes of those days because they didn’t show him a clear picture of things. At first he thought there must be something wrong with the lens(镜头).But no matter how hard he tried to improve the lens, the trouble was still there.
This set Newton thinking. He began to study the nature of light and colors. In the end he found that sunlight,or white light,is actually made up of a row of colors. He counted seven colors in all. This was of course a great discovery. But Newton still wasn’t satisfied. His mind was busy with another problem. Before Newton’s time, scientists had already discovered that the sun,not the earth, was the center of the universe, and they knew that the earth and the other planets moved round the sun.But they couldn’t explain why this was so until Newton gave the answer.
One autumn evening while Newton was sitting under an apple tree thinking over these problems,he saw the moon rise in the sky. Why,he asked himself, should the moon round the earth, never leaving the same path At that moment,he heard an apple drop from the tree. Why should the apple drop to the ground Why didn’t it go sideways or fly up There seemed to be only one reason:The earth was drawing it—that is the force of gravity. If a stone is tied to the end of a string and whirled around,it flies round and round in circles because of the string. In the same way,the force of gravity, thought Newton, must be the force that keeps the moon going round the earth and the planets round the sun.
61This passage tells us .
A.Newton gave the right answer to the making up of the sunlight
B.Newton found that the moon goes round the earth
C.how Newton made two of his greatest discoveries
D.why Newton made two of his great discoveries at home

d.Newton tried every means to improve the lens.
e.Newton counted the number of colors.
A.e,d,c,a,b B.e,a,c,b,d
C.d,a,e,b,c D.d,e,a,b,c
63Which of the following is the nearest in meaning to “But they couldn’t explain why this was so until Newton gave the answer.”
A.But Newton gave the answer because they couldn’t explain why.
B.But Newton couldn’t explain why unless they gave the answer.
C.But it was Newton who gave the answer.
D.But Newton was the first to give the answer.

答案:D
C
An international team of astronomers has discovered a planet slightly larger than Jupiter that orbits a star 500 light years from Earth.A very good telescope was not even required;they found the planet using several small telescopes much like those used by amateur astronomers.
The new planet is named TrES-2 because it is the second such planet found by scientists working on the Trans-Atlantic Exoplanet Survey(TrES).It is a transiting planet(凌日行星),meaning it can be seen transiting,or moving, across the star it orbits.
Ted Dunham,an instrument scientist at Arizona’s Lowell Observatory, says transiting planets are special because researchers can answer a lot of questions about them. All it takes is some math and some observations about the planet and its relationship to its star.
But how big is it How long is its year(the time it takes to orbit around its star) How much would you weigh if you were there
“TrES-2 is a little bigger than Jupiter, has a ‘year’that is a little less than two and a half days, and is a little more massive than Jupiter,”explains Dunham.
From its mass and radius(the distance across the planet)scientists can figure out the density of the planet—whether it is made of rock, gas,or a combination of the two.(TrES-2 is made up mainly of gas.)
They can also work out the surface gravity, says Dunham:“You would feel a little more than twice as heavy as on Earth if you were on TrES-2.”
There’s a catch, though.“The temperature is about 1,500 degrees Celsius(2,732 degrees Fahrenheit),and there is nothing solid to stand on.It isn’t a likely place to look for life,”he says.
Dunham says that to find smaller planets like Earth or Venus, scientists need to send instruments on a mission(使命) to space.NASA scientists are planning one called the Kepler Mission, which could begin in two years.
TrES-2 is in the part of the sky that the Kepler Mission will study.Since astronomers already know so much about it,they can use it to help make sure their instruments are working.
64A suitable title for this passage would be .
A.A Transiting Planet
B.A New Planet in Sight
C.The Kepler Mission
D.Astronomers’ Great Achievements

Once, lately at night,an Englishman came out of his room into a passage of the hotel and ask the servant to bring him a glass of water. The servant did as she asked. The Englishman reentered his room, but a few minute later he came into the passage again but once more asked the servant a glass of water.Every a few minutes the Englishman would come out of his room and repeated his request. After a half hour the astonishing servant decided to ask the man what he is doing with the water.“Nothing,” answered he calm.“It’s simply that the room is on fire.”
第二句:she→he 解析:代替an Englishman应用he,不用she。

Recently, students in our class have had a discussion on whether space is worth exploring.
30% of the students think space exploration is not worthwhile. They think space is too far away from us and our daily life. And the money spent on space exploration can be used to solve the earth’s problems such as starvation and pollution.
On the other hand, 70% think space is worth exploring because we have benefited a lot from it, such as using satellites for communication and weather forecast. What’s more, with further space research, we may solve the population problem by moving to other planets one day. Also, space research will enable us to find new sources to solve the problem of energy shortages on the earth.
