Some people say, “Extreme sports are so dangerous. Why would anyone want to do them?” But the danger is what makes them so exciting. Keep reading to find out the most popular ones.
Bungee jumping: People on some South Pacific islands have been bungee jumping for hundreds of years. In 1979, some people bungee jumped off a bridge in England and made the sport popular around the world. Bungee jumping came to China in 1996.

Sir Ernest Shackleton was an explorer who was born in southern Ireland, but grew up in London. In 1901 Shackleton got a place on Captain Scott's first Antarctic expedition (探险队) on the Discovery. In 1907, he led his own British Antarctic Expedition on the Nimrod and received a hero's welcome when he returned.
After Scott died in 1912, Shackleton chose to tackle the challenge of Antarctica in a different way. He decided he would try to journey across the Antarctic from one side to the other through the South Pole.
In 1914, Shackleton led a party on the ship Endurance cross the Antarctic from one side to the other. On 19 January 1915, Endurance became locked in the ice of the sea. Over the course of the next nine months the ship was gradually destroyed, finally sinking on 27 October. It proved impossible for the 28 men to pull their boats and stores across the frozen sea, so Shackleton camped on the ice and drifted (漂流) with it.
Shackleton and his men were cold and exhausted, and weak from the difficulties of the journey. They knew they would not be found and could not all sail further. Therefore, Shackleton and five others left most of the party behind and reached the nearest island where they found help and the whole party survived.
Although the expedition failed because Shackleton did not reach the South Pole, in other ways it was his biggest success. He overcame (战胜) great difficulties to bring his men safely home after the Endurance was trapped and destroyed.
On 5 January 1922, Shackleton died of a heart attack. He was on his way to the Antarctic again, on board another ship the Quest.

Traffic jams result in loss of time — and loss of health, according to recent research. It has already been proven that fumes (烟雾) from cars and trucks are linked to heart and lung (肺) disease and cancer. Now scientists have found that they may also harm brain cells and nerves (神经), according to The Wall Street Journal on November 8.
Experiments by scientists around the world suggest that traffic fumes can affect people's mental ability, intelligence and emotional stability (稳定性).
“There is real cause for concern,” said neurochemist (神经化学专家) Annette Kirshner at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in North Carolina, US.“But we ought to proceed (推进) with caution.”
Currently scientists are not sure what the exact effects will be on people's brains and behavior.
Scientists in the Netherlands recently discovered that breathing traffic fumes for just 30 minutes can increase electrical activity in parts of the brain that control behavior, personality and decision making.
Research teams in New York, Boston, Beijing, and Krakow (Poland) found that children who live in areas affected by heavy traffic fumes had lower scores in IQ tests. They were also more likely to suffer depression (抑郁), anxiety and attention problems than children who grew up breathing cleaner air.
It was also found that older men and women who had long been breathing traffic fumes had memory and reasoning problems.
Vehicles today don't let out as much pollution as they did in 1970, only about one tenth of what it was then. However, there are more cars on the roads today and they get stuck in traffic more often. Drivers traveling on the busiest roads in the US spend an average of 140 hours in traffic jams every year, about the same time they spend in the office in a month.
Scientists believe that even if it is not possible to reduce the number of cars on the road, as long as simple steps can be taken to speed up the traffic, public health problems can be greatly reduced.

A
I picked up my two best friends and we were off on a road trip. I had just returned to America from a year abroad in China. So, naturally I wanted to take a trip to Canada.
Montreal, the second largest city in Canada, is a four hour drive from my home in New Hampshire. We felt a thrill as we crossed the border into Canada. It was the first time I had ever driven across an international border. We turned on the radio to try and find some Canadian stations.
After dropping off our bags at our hotel, we were immediately walking down the famous St Catherine's Street. While we walked, two things surprised us: how cold it was and how well everyone dressed. The streets of Montreal are like a fashion show. Both men and women look like they stepped out of the pages of a magazine.
All of that fashion has to keep them warm since Montreal is so cold. Last year it broke the record for the most snowfall in North America. To hide from the cold we went into a small diner because we wanted to order Poutine, a very popular snack in Montreal. It is French fries covered in cheese and brown gravy (肉汁). It is delicious.
However, we had a hard time ordering the dish since the official language of Montreal is French. It is actually the fifth largest French speaking city in the world. But since the rest of Canada speak English, plenty of people were there to help.
We spent the rest of the weekend going to many historical churches and monuments in Montreal. But at night we'd head to the very modern dance clubs and bars. Montreal is a city that sits between the past and the future and the traveller can choose whichever direction he wants to go.

We've colonised most of the world, but one vast stretch of the planet remains beyond our grasp: Antarctica. This frozen continent at the end of the earth has never been permanently occupied by man. Even if you're traveling there on a cruise ship, as most people do, the solitude (孤独) and the emptiness will envelop you.
Not that solitude is the first thing that comes to mind when you're standing in the middle of a penguin colony on an Antarctic shoreline. When I visited in early February, there were thousands of birds packed tightly on every rock, both shy gentoo penguins and the bolder adélie penguins. They seemed happy to see us wandering among them; our cameras clicked crazily at the grey fluff ball chicks who are tapping their parents' beaks (鸟嘴) to be fed.
But penguins are by no means the only stars of the show here. I found it equally exciting to see a wandering albatross (信天翁) circling above our ship, dipping its great wings into the rolling waters of the Drake Passage. Or fat elephant seals rest on the beach in a soup of algae (海藻), shouting at each other like elderly members of a gentlemen's club.
Most exciting of all, though, were the whales. As the call went up from the bridge of our ship —“Humpbacks!”— we spotted three of them leaping from the water, their magnificent tails emerging and dipping as if in slow motion, so close that we could see their great heads, their eyes and blowholes.
Just as vast and attractive are the icebergs. The glassy world of the Weddell Sea is a fantastic picture of icy skyscrapers stretching to the horizon. Some are whipped by wind and water into fantastical shapes — oriental (东方的) palaces, ruined fortresses, an Art Deco cinema.
All of the above is exactly what makes a voyage here so extraordinary. A journey to Antarctica is a travel experience as special as you can have.

C
This journey began this morning almost an hour later than I had planned, although I had completed my packing before eight o'clock. I was quite clear about the fact that once I left, my house would stand empty for probably the first time since the day it was built. It was a strange feeling and perhaps explains why I was leaving so late, walking around the house many times over, checking one last time to see that all was in order.
It is hard to explain my feelings once I did finally set off. As I drove further and further from the house, I found the surroundings (周围的事物) grow unrecognizable. I began to have a feeling of unease mixed with excitement. I took a turning and found myself on a road circling the edge of a hill. I could sense the steep (陡峭的)drop to my left. I felt a sense of alarm that I was perhaps not on the correct road at all, but speeding off in the wrong direction into a wilderness. It was only the feeling of a moment, but it caused me to slow down. And even when I was sure I was on the right road, I felt forced to stop the car a moment to think carefully.
I decided to step out and stretch (伸展) my legs a little. On the one side of the road, thickets and small trees rose sharply, while on the other I could now see the distant countryside and a town nearby.
I walked a little way along the roadside, when I heard a voice behind me. Until this point I had believed myself quite alone and I turned in some surprise. Sitting on the large stone was a thin, white haired man. He called to me again and signaled me to join him. For a moment, I took him for a homeless man, but then I saw he was just some local man enjoying the fresh air and summer sunshine, and saw no reason not to do so.

Exactly a decade has passed since a man called Oxygen first threw himself across America. Known for his jumping ability, Oxygen, a Czech, who jumped a nearly 10 foot wide abyss (深渊). Today, Petr Kops, 21, is wearing Oxygen's pants. “I did not know Oxygen personally, but my sister did,” Kops said. “I wear his trousers for good luck.” Minutes later, Kops was standing at the edge of a 70 foot abyss called Broken Bones.
While it may seem suicidal (自杀的), jumping across a gap is actually an extreme sport that is gaining in popularity. Called rock jumping, or simply jumping, this activity is taking place in the Adrspach Teplice Rocks, a remote nature preserve in the northeast part of the Czech Republic. Known for its 11 square miles of sandstone, the region has been loved by lifelong rock climbers. “The aim is to get to the top of as many towers as you can.” said Vladimir Prochazka, known as June Bug, a 59 year old climber and a collector of Czech rock climbing histories.
Jumping is often the most possible way to get to the tower. In most cases, climbers jump with a rope tied around their waist. If they miss the landing — which is not uncommon — they will fall into the wall of the base tower. “Jumping requires fearlessness,” Prochazka said. “Broken or damaged bones are fairly common.” Still, there are those who prefer to experience by jumping without a rope. Among the most well known of these adventurers are Petr Prachtel and his wife, Zorka, who helped create the sport in the 1960s. They pioneered countless jumps, sometimes without the safety of a rope.

Ⅴ.阅读理解
Sports shoes that work out whether their owner has enough exercise to warrant time in front of the television have been devised in the UK.
The shoes — named Square Eyes — contain an electronic pressure sensor and a tiny computer chip to record how many steps the wearer has taken in a day. A wireless transmitter passes the information to a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time the wearer deserves, based on the day's efforts.
The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel University to London, UK.“We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out,”she says.“And I wanted to tackle that with my design.”
Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically switches off. And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps.
Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily amounts of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals precisely one minute of TV time.
Existing pedometers (计步器) normally clip onto a belt or slip into a pocket and keep count of steps by measuring sudden movement. Swan says these can be easily tricked into recording steps through shaking. But her shoe has been built to be harder for lazy teenagers to cheat.“It is possible, but it would be a lot of effort,”she says.“That was one of my main design considerations.”
