The amount of time that people spend on travel is 1.1 hours per person per day in all societies. The average distance traveled is 7,400 miles (12,000 km) per year. In total, the world population travels more than 16.6 trillion miles (23 trillion km) per year, 53% of which is by car, 26% by bus, 9% by rail, 9% by high speed transport such as airplanes, and 3% by bicycle, boat and other means.
It is estimated (估计) that, due to developments in high speed public transport, travel time will drop to only 12 minutes per person per day by 2050. Of the global traffic volume, 35% will be by car, 20% by bus, 41% by high speed transport, and 4% by rail.
At present, traffic congestion (拥塞) has a huge negative (消极的) economic and environmental impact (影响) across the world. Road congestion in the UK costs the UK economy £15 billion a year. It costs the US $100 billion a year. In Seattle, Washington for instance, a driver spends an average (平均) of 59 hours stuck in traffic each year. In the greater Seattle area there are more cars than people; each household makes an average of 10 motorcar trips a day. According to Sierra Club, “American cars and trucks account for 20 percent of the world's petroleum consumption (石油消耗).”
The US has the most highways, but European roads are busier. In Europe, cars travel more than 600 miles (1,000 km) per road per year, compared to an average of 500 km per road in the US. The world's worst traffic jam usually occurs during the summer on the road from Paris to Toulouse, France.

When I was ten, I came over to my cousin's house, and that was pain because he lived in New York and I lived in Miami. So I came over every summer break by myself, of course I had my parents' permission to go that far.
One day, we decided to head to the forest. I was looking forward to this trip because I knew that my cousin was an expert on tree climbing while I was not. So, as we walked closer and closer to the forest, I became jealous because I did not possess the ability to climb trees. When he started climbing a tree I was upset but I joined him hoping not to break my neck. Last summer break he invited me to his house. I was afraid of climbing to the tree so I gave up. But this time I tried climbing the tree. While I was climbing I was so scared like I was about to die at any moment. But when I was about to climb on the other branch I lost my balance. Luckily I got hold on one of the bottom branches. My cousin suddenly started climbing down and tried to help me. After he put me on the ground, he ran to get some help. The pain was just killing me, I lost a lot of blood and I knew that I have to be awake to survive.
Finally, my cousin brought the help. When I waked up I was happy that I did not die. It was pretty insane what happened to me.

You may ride on your bicycle in a rush to get to school every morning. You may fight to get a bit of space on a bus or on the subway. You may also watch taxis crawl their way through traffic jams.
No matter where you are, all big cities around the world have traffic jams these days. But although they all have their problems, many cities also have a type of transport that has become a cultural icon (文化标志).
In London, to avoid the traffic above ground, people use the “underground”, also called the “Tube”. The city has the oldest and most complicated underground railway system in the world and is the pride of many Londoners. With 12 lines and 275 stations across the city, the Tube, is normally the quickest and easiest way of getting around London. In London, you are never far from a Tube station.
New York is famous for its Yellow cabs. They serve as a quick and easy way of getting across Manhattan, where the subway doesn't take you everywhere. Stopping a cab is easy, just stick out your arm like you do in any city. But, with over 12,000 yellow cabs in the Big Apple, they also cause traffic jams.
Since 1873 when the first cable car started public service, the slow and noisy vehicle has been a symbol of San Francisco. Although once damaged by a serious earthquake and challenged by cars, it is never caught in traffic jams and provides better views than the subway.
But there are no such symbols in Los Angeles. If you visit you'd better rent a car. The city's public transportation is terrible. It can take hours to get across town by bus. The subway covers just a small part of the city centre. The light rail line only runs between the Long Beach hotel area and the city centre. That's why Angelenos love their private cars more than any other people in the world.

Ⅴ.阅读理解
Car sharing is another way to drive green that's gaining in popularity, especially in urban areas. People who may not drive every day but still want a car to run errands (差事) or drive on weekends benefit most from car sharing. Car sharing is usually run by a service like Zipcar, though there are non profit and informal car sharing services. Members pay a monthly fee and have access to an entire fleet of cars when they need one. The cars are parked in fixed spots around the city, so members only need to make a reservation (预约), and then go to the pick up spot.
Car sharing has major environmental benefits because it lessens the number of cars on the road. Members don't drive just because they have a car. They plan trips, and if they don't need a car, they don't use one. Still, a car is available to them if they need to make a big trip to the grocery store, pick someone up at the airport or if they want to go to the beach for the day. Members also benefit by having access to a car without any of the headaches of ownership. They usually don't have to pay for gas, insurance or maintenance (保养),and the monthly membership fee is less than a typical car payment. So if you really want to go green but aren't ready to totally give up a car yet, car sharing may be the way to go.
If you still need to get around, but want to go even greener than sharing a car, share a bus! On the next page, you'll learn about the green benefits of mass transit.

Have you ever thought of taking a train and having an adventure (奇遇) Riding the train can be a real adventure. That is how I feel every time I take Amtrak. I often take a four hour trip to visit my children. Every time I take this trip I never know what will happen.
Last week when I was on the train and over an hour into the train ride, there was a man sitting by himself in the back of the train carrying on a mobile phone conversation — in another language. It was loud and disturbed most of the people on the train. I think it was annoying.
Fortunately I sat next to a wonderful old lady who was taking a two day trip by train. She said her two daughters were distraught at the thought of her driving for three days to reach her home, although she had no trouble driving. The train ride was the only choice for her. She loved to look out of the window and watch the world go by on the train.
She was fun to talk to and asked me when my children started being parents. That is a very good question. Both of us are old and have children. She asked that same question from time to time.
There are always many people on the train from all walks of life, different countries, and many languages. Riding the train is a great way to increase your knowledge and take in all kinds of cultures. If you get hungry, you can buy food in the food car at any time. If you need to use the restroom there is always one available.
It sure beats driving the car, which has to stop for food and restrooms. And it is better than taking the bus.

When I was five years old, my parents would have to pull me home from yet another painful English vacation. I still didn't want to leave. I wanted to be away from home. I wanted to go somewhere new and exciting. This became the theme of the next twenty years. I'd spend the whole year counting down to my next holiday, and then as soon as I left I'd begin to dread having to return home. Year after year.
Ten years ago, I decided to build a life that I didn't want to escape from. I knew I wanted to travel in the long term, but I didn't have a lot of money or savings, and there was no one paying for my adventures. For five years, I did three jobs while studying full time at university. I didn't eat out and I didn't buy anything I didn't need. I even moved in with my parents. I was able to save $16, 000 over those five years, which was enough to keep me on the road for a couple of years.
But what if two years wouldn't be enough Before leaving, I began to spend my time in making plans that would allow me to work anywhere that had an Internet connection. At the time, I was studying for a master degree in Physics. While studying, I came up with a list of my interests and skills and began researching into a way to do these anywhere. If I could make money from it and if I could do it online, then it was something worth going after.
I created a writing file that would help me to find free writing jobs. I researched English and Physics teaching online, and built travel websites to earn income through sales and advertising. Most of these failed, but I didn't give up.
The work I do has changed over the years and it's still changing now. Now, I pay my traveling through several different things. I'm the Student Travel Expert for , and a senior writer for Too Many Adapters, a travel technology website. In addition, I will have my first book published this summer. I also offer a travel planning service to help readers prepare for their travels abroad.
To reach this point, where I can cover my expenses and travel full time, took many, many years of hard work. For me, the freedom makes it worth it. With everything set in place, finally my dreams came true.

To see the world is one thing; to have someone to share it with is another. Indeed, travel becomes more interesting when you have a travel partner. A travel partner can be a close friend, a family member, a pal (好友) you've met online, or a business friend.
You can have someone to talk to
Traveling alone is fun, but wouldn't you feel lonely Having a travel partner can remove the feeling of loneliness. This is especially true if you can get a travel companion who is very familiar with the place you're traveling to. You don't have to ask any information from the locals, and you can increase the time you spend in the country.
One of the major headaches in traveling is the costs involved. You can't simply ignore the rising price of hotels or plane tickets. You should also think about your daily needs, such as your food. Of course, you can't simply go back without bringing any souvenirs (纪念品) to your friends and family. All these can ruin your budget. However, when you have a travel friend, you can have someone to share the expenses with.
You can meet a good friend
Having a travel mate is a good way of meeting a new friend or even a lifelong partner. You can never count the number of couples who actually found their way into each other's heart while traveling together in another country.
You can have someone to watch out for you
When you're in a foreign land, you'll never be really safe. You don't know the rules as well as the culture of the people. A travel mate will be perfect to remind you of your duties in the country and to watch your back just in case you get lost. So why don't you find a travel companion now
