Ⅴ.阅读理解
Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance. The purpose is to let children learn from experience at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly.
The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family.Timing is another consideration. Some children get a weekly allowance.Others get a monthly allowance.
In any case, parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money.
At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it.If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget.Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance.
The object is to show young people that a budget demands choices between spending and saving.Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger costs, like clothing or electronics.
Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a good idea to pay your child for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life.
Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.
Allowances give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or giving it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want.Or they can save it.

My mother sat in silence, shocked by my guided tour of websites of adventurous families, who bike around the world for charity, sail the globe in search of their roots or see the world through children's eyes.We found many people on boats, bikes and foot, showing that adventure doesn't have to die when a new life is created. As one of my friends says,“This is your one and only chance to explore the world with your children as they are now.”
“Mum,” I began awkwardly.“We're going to travel across New Zealand. Two bikes, two trailers (拖车), two toddlers (学步的孩子) and 2,000 miles.”
“Two thousand nappies (纸尿裤) more like.”
My mother wasn't the only one to raise objections. While friends and family were impressed by our bravery, they were horrified at what it would involve.“No nursery, no babysitters, no bath time, no peace, no escape ...” And that was before we mentioned the real difficulty: pulling 50 kg of trailer, toddler and baggage. And of course the nappies.
“Is there anything I can say to put you off?” my mother asked.
“No, Mum,” I replied firmly.
“Well, we'll see about that.”
The challenge of dealing with my mother's phone call about potential disasters is as great as anything we may have to face on the road.Meanwhile, we rush to toilet train both children to avoid the nappy carrying.Among the voices of doubt and disapproval, I still sometimes wonder if we are mad, but know we aren't mad alone. We have now been in communication with many of the families I showed my mother on the web.And we can feel our own voice getting stronger and more confident with their encouragement, advice and support.
Now we know there are so many families out there adventuring. We're already developing ideas for a world tour to meet some of these families and talk with them about their experiences and spread the word about the possibilities for independent family adventure. As a friend of ours said, “The only limit is the parents' imagination.” We intend to let ours run wild.

Money is all surrounding us. Every day, we see it, use it, and it is on the tip of our tongue. Did you ever stop to consider where the money you carry around every day comes from
Making new money is a very unique job and no easy task. It has up to 65 steps. When the money in use gets dirty and worn out, it will be replaced with new money. The old money is taken from banks and brought to places where it is destroyed. Usually, the old money is burned. The burned money is replaced by new paper money.
While old money is being replaced, new money is being printed in a place called a mint (铸币厂). Large sheets of paper are printed with many pictures of some currency (流通货币). These large sheets are cut into individual bills. The individual bills are then put together in big stacks and then sent to banks.
Sometimes the mint will make a new bill with a new picture (photos of statesmen and places of interest are favoured) or a new colour. It is not easy for the government to make a new bill. It takes a long time, and there are many steps to go through before a new bill can be sent to banks. First, people in the government decide that a new kind of bill is needed. Then, they ask an artist to design the new bill. A different artist cuts the new picture into a soft piece of metal called a die. The dies are made and put onto large printing machines. Then, very special paper is used, which no one but the mint can have. Along with this special paper, the mint also prints currency using special colours. After the dies print the new currency onto the paper, the bills are cut, stacked, and sent off to the banks.

On the following day after arriving in Cairo, my husband, my two kids and I went to visit Museum of Cairo in the city.
The museum is a must see in Cairo. Arriving at the famous museum in the heart of Cairo after visiting the Pyramids, we could see a long queue of people waiting for tickets. Luckily, the driver dropped us right outside the front, and probably because we were with a recognized tour guide, we walked straight through.
The museum is a large two storeyed building packed with relics (遗迹) planned by age. You can start from the Old Kingdom of Egypt and make your way through more recent dynasties into the New Kingdom. Ahmed had an easy way of explaining what we were seeing and the children soon knew how to tell the difference between Upper and Lower Egypt. However, they were caught out by Ahmed showing the special statue (雕像) of an Egyptian King and asking whether it was a man or a woman. Ahmed explained that it was one of the only two statues in the museum — the only female King who managed to be King for more than 20 years by dressing as a man.
Then we went to see things of Tutankhamen. He is probably one of the most famous Egyptian Pharaohs. But as we learned, he was hardly important in his time. It is clear that he suffered from a bad leg when he was alive because the museum has lots of his walking sticks.Ahmed explained that the way of his burial (埋葬) showed that his death was unexpected as people had no time to create a proper tomb (坟墓) for him. He was actually buried in a tomb put aside for one of the generals of the army.
Having seen Tutankhamen's death mask, we had 20-30 minutes' free time, so we decided to use it to see the mummies (木乃伊). The bodies are really well preserved (保存). You can even see their ears, fingernails and teeth. This was one of the highlights of our holiday!
