I'm walking around a street on Detroit's west side, looking at the house where my mother lived in the 1930s. A neighbor, understandably curious, bounds over.
“I'm the king of Glendale,” Keith Harris says. Harris loves Glendale Street — so much so that he's purchased nine properties for $42,000.“I'm not done yet,” he says.“I'm going to buy more and rent them.” I'm glad to hear this. Glendale could use more investment. So could Tuxedo Street, a few blocks away, where my father grew up. So could Detroit.
I've seen all the photos showing Detroit in ruins. Now I've come to see for myself what's happened to what was America's fifth largest city around 1950. Then there were more than 1.8 million residents (居民); now there are fewer than 700,000.
This is where my family settled after immigrating to the United States in the 1920s, moving into neighborhoods filled with people just like them.
The handwritten 1940 census (人口普查) page for Tuxedo Street literally illustrates the story: It shows a long list of Jewish names and the places from which Jews fled. The neighborhood was so insular (与世隔绝) that when my American born mother went to kindergarten, she couldn't speak English.
Those families don't live here anymore. Some houses have become empty lots. But some are tidy symbols of survival and pride. Keith Harris owns one of those homes.“We have clean up the block day,” he tells me.“We are trying to make it better.”
“Visitors like me walk these streets all the time,” he says.“Some people came and cried like babies.” Maybe they shouldn't have. Though much is gone, there are seeds of hope across the city. Harris has planted some of those seeds.“We invest in this block,” he says, “because we want to stay.”
4.Why does Keith Harris say he's the king of Glendale
A.He invests heavily in Glendale.
B.He's a popular resident in Glendale.
C.He knows everything about Glendale.
D.He has the most attractive house in Glendale.
5.According to the text, Detroit .
A.has a splendid history
B.is able to bounce back
C.has few houses for rent

B.She lived in Tuxedo Street in the 1930s.
C.She immigrated into the US in the 1920s.

7.Clean up the block day was held to .

It seems that all my friends have been making the decision to put off their college education for a year, and I'm happy for them. But I'm not going to lie. When that call comes and they inform me of their decision to take a year off from college, the joy is bittersweet (甜中有苦的).I hear the excitement in my friends' voices and do my best to share their joy, but in those moments, I can't help envying them.I guess I'm a classic case of the broke college kid, and I am never like the gap year college students.
At this point, it has happened so many times that I'm really starting to wonder whether I have made the wrong decision by taking the road to higher learning.
Maybe it's a crazy thing to say, but I want that special moment very much.I want everyone close to me to say “hooray!” after I make the difficult decision of putting off the student loan (贷款) debt so that I can travel across Europe for a year instead.I hope that everyone will be proud of me and the big smile of relief will appear on my face.
However, I can't help but wonder: will my mom ever get the chance to plan a party while I make a decision to travel the world for a year At the party, will my parents ever get the chance to smile at me with pride as I listen to their speech about how proud they are without a care in the world I feel sorry for them. And after all these years, will I ever be the one not taking out private student loans to provide money for my expensive college education
It's depressing to think about, but I may never hear the government say, “You did a great job.High five.”I made the decision not to increase the already too high student loan debt of the country. But the people in the government only stay in their offices, completely unaware of the struggle of college students with student loans.

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we've never been before.
But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line. 16 Imagine how you'd feel if you were in the other person's shoes.
For anything you're about to send:ask yourself,“Would I say this to the person's face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 17
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 18 If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it.Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
19 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it's a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it's a small mistake, you may not need to say anything.Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything.Having good manners yourself doesn't give you license to correct everyone else. 20 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.
It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status.Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don't ask such questions.
A.It's natural that there are some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.
B.Repeat the process till you feel sure that you'd feel comfortable saying the words to the person's face.
C.Everyone was new to the network once.
D.The basic rule is simply: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.
E.When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.
F.You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.
G.If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

Dear Tommy,
I am really feeling bad that you are being troubled by overweight these days. The problem you are faced is common among teenagers.
I have just read a article about overweight kids. It is said that overweight kids don't exercise enough or eat healthy food which contains too much sugar or fat. I think the most effective way of lose weight is actually very simple. It is a combination of a healthy eating habit and properly exercise. That makes it work is determination. It required discipline and perseverance.

24.A.them B.children
C.young people D.it
解析:选A 这里用them来代替上文提到的newspapers。
