It is common to experience culture shock when you are living in a foreign country for a long period of time.Culture shock is the feeling of insecurity and anxiety one may feel in unfamiliar surroundings. To adapt to a foreign culture and effectively manage culture shock, one should keep the following in mind.
Do not regard anything that is different to be “wrong” or “negative”.Not to make judgment too early will allow you to be an objective observer and will make cross cultural understanding easier.
Make an effort to learn the local language. This increases your communication skills and it helps you to know the local community.
Get familiar with the social conduct of your new environment.Do not try to understand behavior from your own cultural perspective.Behavior is not data. For example, Americans often use the phrase “How are you?” to mean “Hello”.A foreigner may wonder why Americans don't respond in detail to this question about one's well being. Thus they may consider the behavior of walking away before one responds to the question to be uncaring or even rude.
Make sure you get to know people in your new environment.Ask questions, read newspapers, and attend a variety of festivals and events.
Try to achieve a sense of stability in your life.Establishing a routine will give you a feeling of safety.
Most importantly, maintain a sense of humor! Don't be too hard on yourself if you make a cultural mistake or don't know what to do in a social situation.Laugh at yourself and others will laugh with you. Most individuals will admire your effort to understand their ways.

Ⅴ.阅读理解
People of older generations often complain about the selfishness and lack of respect they find among the younger generations. It is undeniable that some young people do need to be educated on mutual respect and concern for others, especially senior members of society. But we older people should have some understanding about the young, too.
Today's society is rather different from what it was when we were young. The social, financial and psychological pressure today's young people have to face is much higher than what we did back in the 1950s through the 1990s.
They are in the early stage of their career. They have to find proper jobs to support themselves and work diligently to rise. They have to live in smaller houses, because they are unable to afford the soaring housing prices.Considering these facts, we may find it understandable why young people sometimes appear aloof and disrespectful.
I don't mean that we should put up with it without reminding them of the need to mend their ways. What I mean is that we should be more patient, understanding and tolerant toward them.
For instance, when we get up on a bus or a subway train, we should not complain about not being offered a seat.A young person does not offer a senior citizen his/her seat probably because he/she has to travel a long way to work or because the carriage is too crowded for one to move at all.
In fact, young people do offer their seats to the seniors.I seldom take a bus or a subway train, but more than a quarter of the times I have done so, I was offered a seat. That is fair enough, given that I do not look so senile.
But on occasions, I have seen old people not showing any sign of gratitude when offered a seat.
China has become an aging society since the end of the last century.According to a recent survey, people older than 60 accounted for 11.4 percent of the nation's population. And the percentage is expected to rise, given the one child family planning policy our country has practiced for more than three decades.
In other words, the younger generations will have to shoulder a heavier burden in looking after the parents and grandparents.Theoretically, there will come a day when one couple may have to support four parents and eight grandparents. What a burden it would be!
All this demands that we show more concern and understanding to our younger generations.

B.It is time that the society lightened the burden on the shoulder of the young.

Ⅴ.阅读理解
A
Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal (信号).Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasize (强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust.Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job.In many European countries — like the UK or France — people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures.I once made a speech in Thailand.I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much.In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems.Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude.In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment (多元文化环境) will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.

Millions of people pass through the gates of Disney's entertainment parks in California, Florida and Japan each year. What makes these places an almost universal attraction What makes foreign kings and queens and other important people want to visit these Disney parks Well, one reason is the way they're treated once they get there. The people at Disney go out of their way to serve their “guests”, as they prefer to call them, and to see that they enjoy themselves.
All new employees, from vice presidents to part time workers, begin their employment by attending Disney University and taking “Traditions Ⅰ”. Here, they learn about the company's history, how it is managed, and why it is successful. They are shown how each department relates to the whole. All employees are shown how their part is important in making the park a success.
After passing “Traditions Ⅰ”, the employees go on to do more specialized training for their specific (具体的) jobs. No detail (细节) is missed. A simple job like taking tickets requires four eight hour days of training. When one ticket taker was asked why it took so much training for such a simple, ordinary job, he replied, “What happens if someone wants to know where the restrooms are, when the parade starts or what bus to take back to the campgrounds ... We need to know the answers or where to get them quickly. Our constant aim is to help our guests enjoy the party.”
Even Disney's managers get involved in the daily management of the park. Every year, the managers leave their desks and business suits and put on special service clothes. For a full week, the bosses sell hot dogs or ice cream, take tickets or drive the monorail, and take up any of the 100 jobs that make the entertainment park come alive. The managers agree that this week helps them to see the company's goals more clearly.
All these efforts to serve the public well have made Walt Disney Productions famous. Disney is considered by many as the best mass service provider in America or the world. As one long time business observer once said, “How Disney treats people, communicates with them, rewards them, is in my view the very reason for his fifty years of success ... I have watched, very carefully and with great respect and admiration, the theory and practice of selling satisfaction and serving millions of people on a daily basis, successfully. It is what Disney does best.”

Ⅵ.阅读理解
Given Australia's size and the fact that early settlements were far apart,Australian society is remarkably homogeneous (同种类的).Its citizens are fundamentally prosperous and the way of life in the major cities and towns is much the same however many miles divide them.It takes a sharp ear to identify regional accents.
However, there is some difference in lifestyle between city dwellers and the country people. Almost 90 percent of the population lives in the fast paced cities along the coast and has little more than a passing familiarity with the desert. The major cities preserve pockets of colonial heritage, but the overall impression is modern, with new buildings reflecting the country's youth. In contrast, the rural communities tend to be slow moving and conservative. For many years, Australia was said to have “ridden on the sheep's back”, a reference to wool being the country's main money earner. However, the wool industry is no longer dominant.Much of Australia's relatively sound economy is now achieved from natural coal and wheat, and by being the largest diamond producer in the world.Newer industries such as tourism and wine making are also increasingly important.Australians are generally friendly and relaxed, with a self deprecating sense of humour. On the whole, Australia is a society without hierarchies (等级制度), an attitude generally held to stem from its prisoner beginnings.
Yet, contrary to widespread belief, very few Australians have true prisoner origins.Within only one generation of the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, Australia had become a nation of immigrants.Originally coming almost entirely from the British Isles, today one in three Australians comes from elsewhere.Australia's liberal postwar immigration policies led to an influx of survivors from war torn Europe, most notably Greeks, Italians, Poles and Germans.
The emphasis has shifted in recent years and today the majority of new immigrants are from Southeast Asia.Today Australia is a “blend of nations” and although some racism exists, it has generally been a successful experiment and the country is justifiably proud to have one of the most harmonious multicultural communities in the world.

A British friend told me he couldn't understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds (葵花子) as a snack so much. “I've met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth; I believe that's from cracking the seeds,” he said.
I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I'm watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn't like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so hard just to get one small seed.
When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go door to door on Chinese New Year's Eve to check out what every household was making.
I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. In the living room, a large table would already be laid out, complete with a fancy tablecloth, ready made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds.
Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
I don't think it's right to criticize one's choice in food or eating habits, no matter how strange they may seem.
It's not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins their breath. They think it's a delicacy, and it's connected with their culture. I think it's a wonderful tradition.

Living abroad brings many challenges. One of them is looking for the best way to get used to a new culture while not losing your identity. In this process I have noticed that it's very positive to be in touch with expats, especially with expats from your own country. Why Read on.
I have been in Germany for one year and I have had many experiences. Some of them were more positive than others. But when unexpected things happened, it was nice to meet with other Colombians to listen to their experiences. Through this exchange, I have realized that others have felt the same, and that I am not the only one who has had difficulties. I also believe that they, too, have taken something from my experience.
Colombians are really friendly and usually don't have any problems with meeting new people. This has helped me to increase my social network quickly. When I arrived in Germany, I had two Colombian friends here, and I have kept in touch with one of them who helped me to meet other people, not only Colombians.
Most likely, if you are a foreigner in Germany, your native language is not German. This is the way it is in my case. My native language is Spanish and I really enjoy speaking it. But it's even better when I can share my opinions, thoughts, and worries with other expats, or when I can talk about topics which would not seem interesting to local Germans. Besides, it's possible to use lines and jokes that only those who come from the same country or the same corner of the world can understand.
I like social networks and since I arrived in Germany, I have been connected with other expats through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. On these social networks, I can communicate with others and share my experiences. Meanwhile, I also find interesting information that I don't usually get in other forms of media, such as information about jobs, flats, language courses, offers of Colombian products and events which are not in the local newspapers.

London is great. It's great. Rome and Paris are also fine places, but I knew as soon as we landed in London, this was the finest of the three.
There are only two small things that I don't like about London. First of all, everyone speaks English here. I had so much fun in Rome and Paris. There I could speak in foreign languages. In a word, I made a lot of friends. But here everybody can understand me. I don't have any reason to start up a conversation with a stranger. And speaking of restaurants — that is the other problem with London. The food here is not good at all! I haven't had one good meal in the three days since we were here.
Since you asked me to write to you about everything I learned on this trip, here is what I've learned about London.
London's population of eleven million makes it the second largest city in the world. It is bigger than New York but not as big as Tokyo. London is twice the size of New York. It has an area of 620 square miles!
The Thames River runs right through the center of the city. Someone once called the Thames “liquid history”. It is a very good name. Dozens of armies have crossed it over the past few thousand years. One of the first was the army of Julius Caesar two thousand years ago.
So far I have only had time to visit one neighborhood. It is called Bloomsbury. In fact there is a group of writers known as the Bloomsbury Group. It got its name because so many of them lived there. Virginia Woolf was one of them. I know how much you like her novels.
Baker Street is also part of Bloomsbury. Do you remember who once lived on Baker Street When I asked Bob this question, he answered, “A man who baked bread, right?” Sherlock Holmes, of course, but I won't have time to find his address. Maybe you will when you come.
