In the United States, boys and girls start school when they are five years old. In some states they must stay in school until they are sixteen. Most students are seventeen years old when they graduate from secondary school. Another name for secondary school is high school.
Most children go to public elementary school and secondary school. The parents of public school pupils do not have to pay for their children’s education because taxes support the public schools. If a child goes to a private school, his parents have to pay for the child’ s education.
Today about half of the high school students go on to colleges and universities. Some colleges and universities receive money support from the government. A student at a state university does not have to pay much if his parents live in that state. Private colleges and universities are expensive, however. Almost half of the college students in the USA work while they are studying. If a student’s family is not rich, he has to earn money for part of his college expenses.

C. pay more D. pay less

I entered high school having read hundreds of books. But I was not a good reader. Merely bookish, I lacked a point of view when I read. Rather, I read in order to get a point of view. I searched books for good expressions and sayings, pieces of information, ideas, themes—anything to enrich my thought and make me feel educated. When one of my teachers suggested to his sleepy tenth-grade English class that a person could not have a “complicated idea” until he had read at least two thousand books. I heard the words without recognizing either its irony(嘲讽)or its very complicated truth. I merely determined to make a list of all the books I had ever read. Strict with myself, I included only once a title I might have read several times. (How, after all, could one read a book more than once )And I included only those books over a hundred pages in length.(Could anything shorter be a book )
There was yet another high school list I made. One day I came across a newspaper article about an English professor at a nearby state college. The article had a list of the “hundred most important books of Western Civilization.” “More than anything else in my life,” the professor told the reporter with finality, “these books have made me all that I am.” That was the kind of words I couldn’t ignore. I kept the list for the several months; it took me to read all of the titles. Most books, of course, I hardly understood. While reading Plato’s The Republic, for example, I needed to keep looking at the introduction of the book to remind myself what the text was about. However, with the special patience and superstition(迷信)of a schoolboy, I looked at every word of the text. And by the time I reached the last word, pleased, I persuaded myself that I had read The Republic, and seriously crossed Plato off my list.
40. On hearing the teacher’s suggestion of reading,

he had looked at every word
44. The writer provides two book lists to _______.

In the United Sates elementary education begins at the age of six. At this stage nearly all the teachers are women, mostly married. The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian(要绝对服从的)methods of education were discredited(不被认可的)rather a long time ago—so much that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction.
The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common goods. So the emphasis(重点)is on co-operation(合作)rather than competition(竞争)throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educational system fails. It probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness.
45. According to the passage, the U.S. elementary
education is supposed to make children ______.
A. happy and interested
B. competitive and interested
C. curious and friendly
D. happy and co-operative
46. Some Americans complain about elementary
schools because they think _______.
A. children are reluctant to help each other
B. schools lay too much emphasis on co-operation
C. children should grow up with competitive
ideas
D. schools give little actual instruction to
children
47. The American educational system emphasises
______.
A. material wealth B. competition
C. co-operation D. personal benefit
48. The word “sociable” in Paragraph 2 most probably means ______.
A. fond of talking freely
B. friendly with other people
C. concerned about social welfare(福利)

In early autumn I applied for admission to college. I wanted to go nowhere but to Cornell University, but my mother fought strongly against it. When she saw me studying a photograph of my father on the sports ground of Cornell, she tore it up.
“You can’t say it’s not a great university, just because Papa went there.”
“That’s not it at all. And it is a top university. ”She was still holding the pieces in her hand. “But we can’t afford to send you to college.”
“I wouldn’t dream of asking you for money. Do you want me to get a job to help support you and Papa Things aren’t that bad, are they ”
“No,” she said. “I don’t expect you to help support us.”
Father borrowed money from his rich cousins to start a small jewellery shop. His chief customers were his old college friends. To get new customers, my mother had to help. She picked up a long-forgotten membership in the local league of women, so that she could get to know more people. Whether those people would turn into customers was another question. I knew that my parents had to wait for quite a long time before their small investment (投资) could show returns. What’s more, they had not wanted enough to be rich and successful; otherwise they could not possibly have managed their lives so badly.
I was torn between the desire to help them and change their lives, and the determination not to repeat their mistakes. I had a strong belief in my power to get what I wanted. After months of hard study I won a full college scholarship(奖学金). My father could hardly contain his pride in me, and my mother eventually gave in before my success.

Ⅰ.信息匹配题
The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.
But just as in face-to-face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when online. 1 Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.
For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, "Would I say this to the person's face " If the answer is “no”, rewrite and reread. 2
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct(本能)is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 3 If it was caused by disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
4 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else. 5 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologise to those that you have offended.
It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.
A. It’s natural that there are some people who
speak rudely or make mistakes online.
B. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d
feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s
face.
C. Everyone was new to the network once.
D. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same
way you want to be treated.
E. When you send short messages to a person on-
line, you must say something beautiful to hear.
F. You should either ignore the person, or use your
chat software to block their messages.
G. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake,
point it out politely.

删除:把多余的词用斜线(\)划掉。
修改:在错的词下画一横线,并在该词下面写出修改后的词。
注意:1.每处错误及修改均仅限一词;
2.只允许修改10 处,多者(从第11处起)不计分。

One possible version:
My Perfect School
At the moment, I go to a senior high school in my hometown. It’s quite a good school, but obviously it could be better! Now I’d like to describe my idea of the perfect school.
My perfect school would be near a big park, where students could relax themselves after lunch. The school would have basketball courts, volleyball courts and football fields. There would also be computers in all the classrooms. Another thing it would have is a language lab where we could have our English classes.
Students would study all the school subjects such as Chinese, maths, English, Physics and chemistry. However, there would also be some new optional subjects, for example, astronomy, biochemistry, etc.
As well as the subjects on the timetable, there would be many after-school interest groups, such as chess, photography and sports. There would be regular trips to places like museums and art galleries, too.
In conclusion, I think my perfect school would be a place where I can have fun learning!
