Many young people want to become pop-stars. It is their great dream in life. They think pop-stars earn a lot of money; they lead interesting and exciting lives; they become famous. Thousands of fans love them.
Yes, but first they must become stars. Most performers start life with a group. This is the pattern nowadays. But there are many groups and competition (竞争) is hard. Groups appear and disappear almost overnight. Only a small number survive. Almost without exception they have to work very hard before they reach the top.
And very few reach the top and stay there. In England there are perhaps thirty or so groups at the top. Most of these do not earn so much money: perhaps 500 pounds each time they perform. What’s more, they have quite a lot of expenses. They have to pay a manager, for example. He is the key person in their lives and he takes about 20% of their earnings—perhaps more. Then there are their clothes, their instruments and their van (covering truck for moving goods).Sometimes they are still playing for the last two items.
And don’t forget, they have to travel a great deal—sometimes 2,000 miles in one week. At times they even sleep in their van instead of a hotel just to save money.

He may be still young, but he may surprise you! If you ask around, many would say that the music world has a new leader—the real king is Jay Chou. His mom always worried about his future, but he never did. “I knew I still had music to depend on. For everything else, I always believe in myself,” he said. It was only in 2,000 that Jay put out his own album “Jay”.Jay’s soft and smooth voice is especially gentle and calm, making this first album an immediate hit. Each song in the album has its own, different style, and skillfully, Jay used his voice to suit each song’s character.
Lyrics of Jay’s songs all have a special touch. In his song “Dad, I am Back”, the subject is a broken family.“I heard that after war there is peace. When I was about 12,I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to bear all these as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, then asked,“Are the things she says true or not Jane, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin),but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I got a fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feel hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”
Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

Dear Jim,
How are things going
On November 21st, 2008 I went to a concert held in the Capital Stadium for the first time. The concert was given by Emil Chau, a singer from Taiwan, China. Chau was born in Hong Kong in December, 1960 and showed his music talent at an early age. His first album came out in 1984. Since then he has made many albums and has continued giving great performances on stage at home and abroad. His song “Friends” became well-known to each household.
Throughout the concert, there was not an empty seat anywhere in the Stadium, and the atmosphere was extremely exciting. The audience sang along to nearly every song.
I was greatly moved by Chau’s brilliant music and singing. While I watched and listened, I knew that I was seeing the performance of a real superstar. This is the best concert that I will remember forever.

Christmas is often a day spent with family, but it’s easy to get a bit impatient if you’re forced to spend the entire day at home. Unfortunately, there's not much to do on Christmas Day when most businesses are closed. If you're sick of going out for Chinese food or heading to the movies, here are a few other choices for you on Christmas Day.
1. John Deere World Headquarters(总部)
If you find yourself in Moline, Illinois, and want to know about antique(古老的)farm equipment on Christmas Day, come to the show room of the John Deere World Headquarters. It's open until 5 p. m., and you can have a look at antiques as well as the company's latest offerings.
2. The Bunny Museum
The self-described "happiest place in the world" is open on Christmas Day in Toronto, Canada. Candace Frazee and Steve Lubanski host the rabbit-themed(以兔子为主题的) museum in their home, and it's full of their real rabbit pets and tons of rabbit-themed things. If you decide to visit here, note their gift-receiving policy: " Candace &Steve do accept bunny gifts. (And flowers, vegetables, postage stamps!) PLEASE DO NOT BRING THEM A REAL BUNNY FOR A GIFT!"
3. Branson, Missouri
We don't want to get anyone too excited, but according to the entertainment boomtown’s website, "Most of Branson’s major attractions will be open during the Christmas season.” We know what you’re thinking, and yes, that includes the Hollywood Wax Museum.

In England recently three foreign gentlemen came to a bus stop and waited. About five minutes later, the bus they wanted came along. They were just going to get on when suddenly there was a loud noise behind them. People rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted at them. The bus conductor came rushing down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreigners seemed all at sea and looked embarrassed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining up for a bus that the first person who arrives at the bus stop is the first person to get on the bus.
Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to have a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your host country. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he doesn't agree. But in many parts of India a shake of the head means agreement. Nodding(点头)your head when you are given a drink in Bulgaria will most probably leave you thirsty.
39. The British people tried to push the three gentlemen out of the way, because the gentlemen ______.
A. were foreigners
B. didn't have tickets

What does an astronaut eat in space This is a question that will puzzle many, as people rarely think of that. In the early space-travel years, astronauts ate dehydrated(脱水的)foods that were eaten through straws(吸管)。In today's space-age, the food that they eat is totally different. They eat food in the same way as people do on Earth.
Astronauts are able to prepare and eat a variety of foods in space. Some can be eaten in their natural form, like fruits, while some need to add water, like noodles. However, there are no refrigerators, so the food has to be prepared and eaten without being stored for a long time. When the astronauts are hungry, they simply eat the food by opening the food packages and with a fork, knife, and spoon.
Just like people on Earth, astronauts also eat three meals a day which include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sometimes they also eat snacks. The US space agency NASA has found out that an astronaut's diet reduces by about 70% on a space mission, though he has a wide range of foods to choose from like nuts, chicken, beef, seafood, and candies. Drinks in the spaceship include coffee, tea, juices, and lemonade.
Astronauts can also request a particular food that they would like to have in space. Scientists are always experimenting and trying out different space foods that can be offered to astronauts when on space missions.

A. dehydrated foods
B. food as people do on Earth

Should students make friend online Some people say yes. The Internet help make many friends. Chatting online, students can express his feelings and opinions more freely, and even get help with their foreign language studies. Others, therefore, think students should not. They say making friends online was a waste of time, which should be spent more meaningful on study. Besides, some students get cheated in line. That is my opinion that students should place their study, healthy and safety before other things. As for friendship, we can readily find it in our classmates and other people around we.

Dear friends,
As a famous saying goes, “A friend is a present you give yourself.” Friends share our joys and sorrows, which makes our life more enjoyable. When we get into trouble, our friends always help us out. That is why someone says “Friends are the sunshine of life”.
In order to make friends, we should be honest and helpful. In this way we can make a good impression on others, which makes it possible for others to be friends with us. At the same time, when our friends are in need, we should offer them a helping hand.
We all need friends. So let’s take good care of our friends to enjoy life to the fullest.
That’s all. Thank you.
