A
Researchers are placing robotic dogs(机器狗)in the homes of lonely old people to determine whether they can improve the quality of life for humans. Alan Beck, an expert in human-animal relationship, and Nancy Edwards, a professor of nursing, are leading the animal-assisted study concerning the influence of robotic dogs on old people's depression, physical activity, and life satisfaction. “No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active, challenged, or stimulated(刺激),”Edwards points out. “The problem is how we promote(使……成为现实)that, especially for those without friends or help. A robotic dog could be a solution. ”
In the study, the robots, called AIBOs, are placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone. Before placing AIBOs in the home, researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activities before and after AIBOs. Then, the researchers will review the data to determine if they have inspired any changes in the life of their owners.
“I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice, ” says a seventy-year-old lady. “When I'm watching TV, he'll stay in my arms until he wants down. He has a mind of his own. ”
The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some advantages over live dogs, especially for old people. Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns.
“In the beginning, it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog, because it was metal and not furry. ”Beck says. “But it's amazing how quickly we have given up that belief. ”
“Hopefully, down the road, these robotic pets could become more valuable health helpers. They will record their masters' blood pressure, oxygen levels, or heart rhythms. AIBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate older people's minds. ”
36. The purpose of Beck and Edwards' study is to __________.
A. understand human-animal relationship
B. make lonely old people's life better
C. find the causes of old people's loneliness
D. introduce robotic dogs to ordinary families
37. In the research, the old people are asked to __________.
A. note the activities of AIBOs
B. keep AIBOs at home for 12 weeks
C. record their feelings and activities
D. analyze the collected information
38. What is the advantage of AIBOs over live dogs
A. They are easier to keep at home.
B. They can help the disabled people.
C. They respond to all the human orders.
D. They can watch TV with their owners.
39. The author seems to suggest that the future robotic dogs may __________.
A. cure certain diseases
B. keep old people active
C. change people's beliefs
D. look more like real dogs
B
Among the most popular books being written today are those which are usually classified as science fiction. Hundreds of titles are published every year and are read by all kinds of people. Furthermore, some of the most successful films in recent years have been based on science fiction stories.
It is often thought that science fiction is a fairly new development in literature, but it can be found in books written hundreds of years ago. These books were often concerned with the presentation of some form of ideal society, a theme which is still often found in modern stories.
Most of the classics of science fiction, however, have been written within the last one hundred years. Books by writers such as Jules Verne and H. G. Wells, to mention just two well-known authors, have been translated into many languages. Modern science fiction writers don't write about men from Mars or space adventure stories. They are more interested in predicting the results of technical developments on society and the human mind or in imagining the future world. Because of this their writing has obvious political undertones.
In the age when science fact frequently overtakes science fiction, the writers may find it difficult to keep ahead of scientific advances. Those who see the future clearly can teach us how to master new technology and live in a rapidly changing world.
40. Most of the classics of science fiction have been written within __________.
A. the last few hundred years
B. the last one hundred years
C. the last two hundred years
D. the last three hundred years
41. Modern science fiction writers are interested in __________.
A. writing about men from Mars
B. writing about everything but politics
C. forecasting the results of technical developments and imagining the future world
D. writing space adventure stories
42. Science fiction writers may provide a valuable lesson on how to deal with the problems of __________.
A. conflict used by different political theories
B. adopting new technology and adapting quickly to its effects on society
C. conflict caused by different religious beliefs
D. space adventure
C
Japan is pretty serious about robotics(机器人技术). If the droids are going to fit in, they probably need to learn the Japanese custom of serving tea.
Fortunately, researchers at the University of Tokyo are exploring just that. In a show this week, a humanoid with camera eyes made by Kawada Industries Inc. poured tea from a bottle into a cup.
Then another robot on wheels delivered the cup of tea in an experimental room that has sensors(传感器)embedded in the floor and sofa as well as cameras on the ceiling to simulate (模拟)life with robot technology.
“A human being may be faster, but you'd have to say‘Thank you’,”said Professor Tomomasa Sato from the University of Tokyo. “That's the best part about a robot. You don't have to feel bad about asking it to do things. ”
Sato believes Japan, a rapidly aging society where more than a fifth of the population is 65 or older, will lead the world in designing robots to care for the elderly, sick and bedridden.
Already, monitoring technologies, such as sensors that automatically turn on lights when people enter a room, are becoming widespread in Japan.
The walking, child size Asimo from Honda Motor Co. greets people at showrooms. NEC Corp. has developed a smaller companion robot-on-wheels called Papero. A robot available since 2004 can entertain the elderly and others in need of fuzzy companionship.
Sato says his experimental room is raising awareness about privacy questions that may arise when electronic devices monitor a person's movements down to the smallest detail.
On the bright side, the tea pouring humanoid has been programmed to do the dishes.
43. Which is the best title of this passage
A. “Thank You” Will Never Be Needed in Japan
B. Monitoring Technologies Are Widespread in Japan
C. Robots Are Designed to Care for the Elderly
D. A Robot Serves Tea Just the Way Japanese Like It
44. The underlined word “embedded” in the third paragraph probably means“__________”.
A. fixed B. established
C. attached D. rooted
45. Which of the following statements is NOT true
A. A robot can imitate people to complete complicated tasks.
B. A robot has been programmed to clean the dishes.
C. All the problems in the aging society can be solved by robots.
D. The number of aging people is increasing rapidly in Japan.
46. We can infer from the passage that __________.
A. people are afraid of being monitored by robots
B. the technology of robots has been highlighted in Japan
C. robots can completely take the place of human beings
D. people's privacy should be strictly protected
D
PITTSBURGH—For most people, snakes seem unpleasant or even threatening. But Howie Choset sees in their delicate movements a way to save lives.
The 37-year-old Carnegie Mellon University professor has spent years developing snake-like robots, and he hopes they will eventually slide through fallen buildings in search of victims trapped after natural disasters or other emergencies.
Dan Kara is president of Robotics Trends, a Northboro, Massbased company that publishes an online industry magazine and runs robotics trade shows. He said there are other snake-like robots being developed, mainly at universities, but didn't know of one that could climb pipes.
The Carnegie Mellon machines are designed to carry cameras and electronic sensors and can be controlled with a joystick(操纵杆). They move smoothly with the help of small electric motors, or servos, commonly used by hobbyists in model airplanes.
Built from lightweight materials, the robots are about the size of a human arm or smaller. They can sense which way is up, but are only as good as their human operators, Choset added.
Sam Stover, a search team manager with the Federal Emergency Management Agency based in Indiana, said snake-type robots would offer greater mobility than equipment currently available, such as cameras attached to extendible poles.
“It just allows us to do something we've not been able to do before, ”Stover said. “We needed them yesterday. ”
He said sniffer dogs are still the best search tool for rescue workers, but that they can only be used effectively when workers have access to damaged buildings.
Stover, among the rescue workers who handled the aftermath(后果)of Hurricane Katrina, said snake- like robots would have helped rescuers search flooded houses in that disaster.
Choset said the robots may not be ready for use for another five to ten years, depending on funding.
47. Which institution is responsible for the development of Choset's robots
A. Robotics Trends.
B. Pittsburgh City Council.
C. Carnegie Mellon University.
D. Federal Emergency Management Agency.
48. Choset believes that his invention __________.
A. can be attached to an electronic arm
B. can be used by hobbyists in model airplanes
C. can find victims more quickly than a sniffer dog
D. can sense its way no better than its operators
49. By saying “We needed them yesterday.” (Paragraph 7),Stover means that snake-like robots __________.
A. could help handle the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
B. would have been put to use in past rescue work
C. helped rescuers search flooded houses yesterday
D. were in greater need yesterday than today
50. What is the text mainly about
A. Snake-like robots used in industries.
B. Snake-like robots made to aid in rescues.
C. The development of snake-like robots.
D. The working principles of snake-like robots.
Being healthy means taking care of yourself physically and mentally. Here are some of my best tips on how to do both:
Break a bad habit.
You don't really “break” habits. __51__ So if your problem is that you eat too much when you get home from work, find something new to do that is incompatible(不能共存的)with what you usually do. You can't walk around the track at the school and pig out in your kitchen at the same time.
Grow your marriage.
__52__ It's always a give-and-take, always requires work. It's like if you planted a garden and came back six months later—you wouldn't even be able to find it. __53__
Beat stress.
My dog, Maggie, is the best anti-stress tool I have. A few minutes petting, scratching or playing with her, and __54__ Exercise also helps. Just about every day, I'm on the tennis court. It's a great workout, and if I don't have that, I don't cope as well, sleep as well or think as well.
Refocus your anger.
Expressing your anger is just not that good an idea. You say things you don't mean. __55__ When you do that, you're a problem solver.
Don't medicate with food.
It never, ever works. You're denying your issue by eating your way through it,instead of saying, “ Hey, I've got a problem.”
A. You replace the unwanted behaviour with something that prevents you from doing it and that doesn't have unhealthy side effects.
B. I'll feel easy.
C. If there is a problem, you needn't deal with it immediately.
D. You have to tend it, feed it, weed it, deal with the problems.
E. Instead, recognize that anger is usually a symptom of hurt, fear or frustration, and deal with the causes rather than blow up.
F. Relationships are negotiated(协商), and the negotiation never stops.
G. You do something without any good effect on your health during the time when you usually do something harmful to your body.
51. __________ 52. __________ 53. __________
54. __________ 55.__________

give off“发出,放出”;turn down“拒绝;调低(声音)”;take over“接管,接替”;set aside“把……放到一旁”。根据句意, D项正确。
11. D be bound to do sth.“肯定会做某事”,故D项符合语境。
受限制性定语从句you've bought的影响,空格中的代词相当于the car, 所以要用表示特指的the one。
题干为强调句型,被强调部分为years of hard work,故选D项。
14. B only to do表示一种意想不到的结果,句子的主语he与tell之间是被动关系,故选B项。

由第五段第二句“They can sense which way is up, but are only as good as their human operators…”

One possible version:
Sometimes I dream about the life in the 22nd century. What will it be like Perhaps some people will go to the moon for a holiday, and some scientists will live under the sea. Maybe we will have video telephones in every home. And children won't need to go to school every day. They will study on the radio or TV at home.
Many people don't like doing housework. Maybe each family will have a robot. Every day we can tell the robot what to do—the shopping, the housework and so on. I believe my dream will be turned into reality.
