A
In October on the east coast of Australia migrating(迁徙)humpback whales(座头鲸)pass very close to the shore. With the help of Max Egan, we went to film them near Byron Bay. It was extremely exciting to spot the little puffs(水柱)of spray on the horizon. When migrating, the whales can be travelling at the speed of about 12 km/h and can dive under anywhere between five and forty minutes, but with many years of experience Max usually guided our boat to exactly the right place to provide us with amazing sighting. As the whales break the surface like submarines(潜水艇),the water spills off their broad dark backs and huge tails. Then, with a powerful down stroke, they dive back into the depths of the sea, leaving just a smooth glassy patch of water or “footprint” on the surface to show where they had been.
One day we had travelled up and down the shore and far out to the sea in search of whales, but the horizon was deserted. There was no report of whales in the area so we decided to test out Max's new, highly sensitive hydrophone(水中听音器)and the result was astonishing. As soon as the hydrophone was in the water, we found ourselves listening to the most beautiful voices. What may have seemed like a vast empty ocean was filled with the singing of whales.
It is the males which sing, as they migrate between feeding and breeding(养育)grounds. No one knows for sure what the purpose of these songs is, whether they are love songs to the females or warnings to other males to stay away.
It was thought that each group of humpbacks had their own song which remained regular but recent findings suggest that the whales appreciate a memorable tune(曲调)and quickly adopt any new songs they hear.
36. Which finding about whales is beyond the writer's expectation
A. The little puffs.
B. The songs of whales.
C. The travelling speed of whales.
D. The depth of the whale's dive.
37. The writer's main purpose of looking for whales is __________.
A. carrying out research on whales
B. studying the beautiful songs of whales
C. making films about whales
D. hunting whales for research

A. Each group of humpbacks had the song of their own.
B. Whales can't sing to each other.
C. Whales aren't easy to find.
D. Whales can't dive in the sea as long as forty minutes.

There's no end of dangerous sports to try out in Southern Africa—bungee jumping, skydiving, water rafting. But for a new rush, how about swimming face to face with a killer shark(鲨鱼)?
The public seems interested in seeking excitement in this activity. Cape Town's aquarium has been filled with divers who want to swim with the sharks since it opened its tanks to paying visitors last month. Around 70 tourists aged between 12 and 40 have paid 275 rand($55) each to spend up to an hour with Maxine, Dee and Floyd.
And conservationists(自然环境保护论者)say the project should help change the damage done to the shark's image by the popular movie Jaws.
“People will always pay money to be a bit daring, ”said Paul Loetter, an aquarium diver. “Most people think every shark is dangerous, but they've got the wrong idea. ”
Each visitor can swim with the sharks and other fish that share their tank, guarded by aquarium divers armed only with a stick to keep off any over-friendly sharks.
“This is part of a communicational and educational programme to show sharks are not as bad as everyone makes out, ” said Tony McGyre, operational manager of the aquarium.
Len Compagno, head of the South African shark research centre, agreed. “It's no joke to play around with a big dog. In the same way, a three-metre-long shark could put a few holes in you, ” he said.
39. We may infer that in the movie Jaws __________.
A. sharks are hunted everywhere
B. sharks kill other sea animals
C. sharks are disappearing in the sea
D. sharks are man eaters
40. What Len Compagno said really means that __________.
A. you had better not get close to sharks
B. you needn't be too serious about sharks
C. sharks are more dangerous than big dogs
D. sharks are as friendly to people as dogs
41. The writer's purpose in writing the passage is to tell us that __________ .
A. sharks are not as bad as everyone makes out

C. there's no end of dangerous sports in Southern Africa
D. the public seems interested in seeking excitement in swimming with a killer shark
42. We can learn that Maxine, Dee and Floyd are __________.
A. workers in the aquarium
B. the aquarium's three sharks
C. conservationists
D. divers in the aquarium

Dolphins are not fish, but warm-blooded animals. They live in groups, and speak to each other in their own language. In this way they are like other animals, such as bees and birds. But dolphins are very different from almost all land animals. Their brains are nearly the same size as our own, and they live a long time—at least twenty or thirty years.
Like some animals, dolphins use sounds to help them find their way around. They also make these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. We now know they do not use their ears to receive these sounds, but the lower part of the mouth, called the jaw.
Strangely, dolphins seem to like man, and for thousands of years there have been stories about the dolphin and its friendship with people. There is a story about sailors in the 19th century. In a dangerous part of the sea off the coast of New Zealand, they learnt to look for a dolphin called Jack. From 1871 to 1903, Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way. Then in 1903 a passenger on a boat called The Penguin shot and wounded Jack. He recovered and for nine years more continued to guide all ships through the area—except for The Penguin.
Today, some people continue to kill dolphins, but many countries of the world now protect them and in these places it is against the law to kill them.
43. Dolphins are different from many other animals in that they __________.
A. live in groups
B. have large brains
C. are warm-blooded
D. have their own language
44. Which of the following does the dolphin use to help it find its way around
A. Its nose. B. Its ears.
C. Its mouth. D. Its eyes.
45. Why did the sailors off the coast of New Zealand look for Jack
A. He was lonely and liked to be with people.
B. They enjoyed playing with him.
C. He was seriously wounded.
D. They wanted his help.
46. By telling the story of Jack the writer wanted to show that __________.
A. dolphins are friendly and clever
B. people are cruel to animals
C. Jack is different from other dolphins
D. dolphins should be protected by law
D
Do's and Don'ts in Whale(鲸)Watching
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has developed guidelines for whale watching in Johnstone Strait, where killer whales are found on a daily basis each summer. It is strongly recommended that vessel(船只)operators follow these guidelines for all kinds of whales.
●Approach whales from the side, not from the front or the back.
●Approach no closer than 100 metres, then stop the boat but keep the engine on.
●Keep noise levels down—no horns, whistles or racing of engines.
●Start your boat only after the whales are more than 100 metres from your vessel.
●Leave the area slowly, gradually moving faster when you are more than 300 metres from the whales.
●Approach and leave slowly, avoiding sudden changes in speed or direction.
●Avoid disturbing groups of resting whales.
●Keep at low speeds and remain in the same direction if travelling side by side with whales.
●When whales are travelling close to shore, avoid crowding them near the shore or coming between the whales and the shore.
●Limit the time spent with any group of whales to less than 30 minutes at a time when within 100 to 200 metres of whales.
●If there is more than one vessel at the same observation spot, be sure to avoid any boat position that would result in surrounding the whales.
●Work together by communicating with other vessels, and make sure that all operators are aware of the whale watching guidelines.
47. For whom is this text written
A. Tour guides. B. Whale watchers.
C. Vessel operators. D. Government officials.

do harm to ...“对……
3. A 由“I'm not using it anyhow.”
-ing作状语,根据时间状语in the near future可知选C项。
help out “帮助……
pull“拉”;wrap“包裹”;connect“连接”;catch“抓住”。
lead sb./sth. away from...“领着某人/某物离开……”。
forward“向前”;backward“向后”;upward“向上”;downward“向下”。
with his fingers“用手指”。
excited“兴奋的”;interested“感兴趣的”;frightened“受惊的,受恐吓的”; disappointed“失望的”。
34. C struggle to one's feet
as though“好像,仿佛”;even though “即使”;as soon as “一……就……”;as long as“只要”。
36. B 根据第二段第二句“...the result was astonishing.”
37. C 根据第一段第二句“...we went to film them near Byron Bay.”
第二段讲游客与鲨鱼一起游泳,由第二段最后一句“Around 70 tourists ... spend up to an hour with Maxine, Dee and Floyd.”
由第二段最后一句“We now know...but the lower ... called the jaw.
由第三段第一句“Strangely..., there have been stories about the dolphin and its friendship with people.”
由第一段最后一句“It is strongly recommended that… all kinds of whales.”

Dear editor,
We have to say that the pollution is now getting worse and worse. The other day my friend and I went fishing on a riverside. We found the river so dirty and the smell so terrible that we could hardly stay there. We also found lots of rubbish and dead fish floating on the water.
It is all because a lot of factories always send waste water into it and some people throw rubbish into the river. If rivers all over the country were polluted like this, all the living things in the water would be killed and harm would be done to the people close to the rivers. We expect the river will be made clean again soon, and measures should be taken to stop polluting our surroundings.
Yours sincerely,
Wang Ning
