Ⅲ. 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
·Ms Tan, you’ ve referred to your new novel as your eighth book.
That’s because it took me six or seven attempts at a second novel before I started and completed this one.
·Why do you think you had so many false starts
I would say that my reasons were wrong: I was trying to prove that I wasn’t just a mother-daughter storyteller, or I was trying to prove that I didn’t just have to write about things that were strictly Chinese or Chinese-American. Those were never the right reasons for writing those early stories. And I could never come up with other better reasons for continuing them.
·What kept you going on this book
This book was different because it was based on my mother’s real life. The reason for writing it became more personal and emotional. After The Joy Luck Club came out, my mother was always explaining to people that she wasn’t any of the mothers in that book. And at one point she said to me, “Next book tells my true story. ”And then she started telling me things I never knew before. She also told me many, many stories, because my mother doesn’t generalize. The book really grew out of that.
·Have you ever visited China
Yes. I’ve been there twice: about three years ago and then again last November, both times with my mother and my husband.
·Was it difficult to capture the Chinese- American dialect without sounding like a parody(拙劣的模仿)
No, because it’s the language I’ve heard all my life from my mother. She speaks English as it’s direct translation from Chinese. But it’s more than that: Her language also has more imagery than English.
·Can you think of an example
Somebody might say to me, “Don’t work so hard. You’ll kill yourself. ”My mother will say to me, “Why do you press all your brains out on this page for someone else ”So it’s very vivid. That’s the way she talks.
·Have many readers told you that the Chinese mother in your book reminded them of the typical Jewish mother
Many people have told me that. I think the mother-daughter relationship is very intense in both cases. Culturally there is an acceptance that mothers have the power to tell their children, especially their daughters, how to conduct their lives—not simply up until the time they are 18, but for the rest of their lives. However, when children grow up in a different culture from their parents’, they tend to keep more secrets from their parents. The children think, “They just wouldn’t understand that I had to do this. ”And that can really create a gap, and it can grow as the number of secrets grows.
36. Based on the questions in this interview, what do you think Ms Tan’s profession is
A. A journalist. B. A storywriter.
C. An interviewer. D. An interviewee.
37. What’ s TRUE about Tan’ s second book
A. It’s about her real life in America.
B. The name of the book is The Joy Luck Club.
C. It is the result of many times of careful thought.
D. It includes many works of her mother.
38. Which question is NOT answered in the interview
A. How does she think of her mother's language
B. How many books does she plan to write
C. When did she visit China
D. How is generation gap created
39. We can infer that ________.
A. Tan’s mother is a good storyteller
B. Tan plans to write another book about her mother
C. Tan plans to return to China
D. Tan’s mother is hard to communicate with because of personality
40. The last paragraph mainly talks about ________.
A. how to keep secrets from parents
B. how to deal with the mother-daughter relationship
C. how to conduct the lives
D. how the generation gap comes about
B
Among various programs, TV talk shows have covered every inch of space on daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one is different in style. But no two shows are more opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows.
Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of“rubbish talk”. The topics on his show are as surprising as possible. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show titles of love, sex, cheating, and hate, to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of other people’s lives.
Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes the TV talk show to its top. But Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different qualities of life. Contents are from teaching your children lessons, managing your work week, to getting to know your neighbors.
Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured into society. Jerry ends every show with a“final word”. He makes a small speech about the entire idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.
Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show’s main audience are middle-class Americans. Most of the people have the time, money and ability to deal with life’s tough problems. Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. These are 18 to 21 year-olds whose main troubles in life include love, relationship, sex, money and drug. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned through the show's exploitation.
41. Compared with other TV talk shows, both the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows are ________.
A. more interesting
B. unusually popular
C. more detailed
D. more formal
42. Though the social problems Jerry Springer talks about appear unpleasant, people who watch the shows ________.
A. show disbelief in them
B. are ready to face up to them
C. remain cold to them
D. are willing to get away from them
43. Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show
A. A new type of robot.
B. National hatred.
C. Family income planning.
D. Street accidents.
44. We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows ________.
A. have become the only ones of its kind
B. explore the weaknesses in human nature
C. appear at different times of the day
D. attract different people
45. What is the advantage of the Jerry Springer show
A. The show exposes the dark sides of society.
B. The show pours poisonous waste into society.
C. Jerry sums up the whole idea of the show.
D. Jerry talks about the improvement of society.

Roslyn High School on Long Island recently started a pilot program using iPads in some classrooms.
A growing number of schools across the U. S. would like to use the iPad as the latest tool to teach Kafka in multimedia, history through games and math with step-by-step cartoon of complex problems.
As part of a pilot program, Roslyn High School handed out 47 iPads on Dec. 20, 2010 to the students and teachers in two humanities(人文学科)classes. The school district hopes to provide iPads eventually to all 1, 100 of its students.
The iPads are to be used in class and at home during the school year to replace textbooks, allow students to correspond with teachers and turn in papers and homework tasks, and preserve a record of student work in digital files.
“It allows us to extend the classes beyond these four walls, ”said Larry Reiff, an English teacher at Roslyn who now posts all his course materials online. But educators are still divided over whether practices to give every student a laptop have made a difference academically.
“There is very little evidence that kids learn more, faster or better by using these machines, ”said Larry Cuban, a retired professor of education at Stanford University. “iPads are excellent tools to attract kids, but then the freshness wears off and you get into hard-core problems of teaching and learning. ”
But school leaders say the iPad is not just a cool new toy but rather a powerful and multifunctional tool with a number of applications, including thousands of educational uses. “If there isn’t an application that does something I need, there will be sooner or later, ”said Mr. Reiff, who said he now used an application that includes all of Shakespeare’s plays.
46. The passage mainly wants to tell us ________.
A. iPads will be used in more and more schools in the U. S.
B. students have achieved a lot after using iPads
C. teaching will become less important with the help of iPads
D. a program of a school to allow students to use iPads in the classroom
47. The program of using iPads in class is ________.
A. widely accepted by most schools in the United States
B. encouraged and organized by the iPad company
C. carried out by the U. S. government
D. only an experimental one carried out in some schools
48. We can use iPads to do the following at school except ________.
A. judging the teachers’ teaching
B. keeping digital record of homework
C. replacing the school textbooks
D. communicating with teachers
49. The underlined part“these four walls”in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.
A. school dormitory
B. school classroom
C. teacher’s office
D. school campus
50. According to the passage, who are in favour of the program

Do American children still learn handwriting in school In the age of the keyboard, some people seem to think handwriting lessons are on the way out. 90% of teachers say they are required to teach handwriting. But studies have yet to answer the question of how well they are teaching it. One study published this year found that about three out of every four teachers say they are not prepared to teach handwriting. Some teachers are teaching handwriting by providing instruction for 10~15 minutes a day, and then other teachers who basically teach it for 60 to 70 minutes a day—which really for handwriting is pretty much.
Many adults remember learning that way—by copying letters over and over again. Today’s thinking is that short periods of practice are better. Many experts also think handwriting should not be taught by itself. Instead, they say it should be used as a way to get students to express ideas. After all, that is why we write.
Handwriting involves two skills. One is legibility, which means forming the letters so they can be read. The other is fluency—writing without having to think about it. Fluency continues to develop up until high school.
But not everyone masters these skills. Teachers commonly report that about one fourth of their kids have poor handwriting. Some people might think handwriting is not important any more because of computers and voice recognition programs.
But Steve Graham at Vanderbilt says word processing is rarely done in elementary school, especially in the early years. American children traditionally first learn to print, and then to write in cursive, which connects the letters. But guess what we learned from a spokeswoman for the College Board, which administers the SAT college admission test. More than 75 percent of students choose to print their essay on the test rather than write in cursive.
51. We can learn ________ from Paragraph 1.

D. a keyboard has taken the place of the handwriting entirely
52. Which of the following is WRONG for traditional handwriting in the USA

17. A 根据上下文考查合适的动词短语。上文提出了一个问题,所以选find out“发现,找到(答案)”。
18. C 根据上下文考查意义正确的搭配。leave...off “关掉”。
19. C 考查常用短语搭配。from...to…是固定短语,结合句意和后文的“to”可以得知C项是正确答案。

22. C 考查符合上下文的名词。由上文可知是“a non-profit organization”。government政府;parent家长;businessman商人,都不符合,所以选C。

A
My name is M-m-m-adison. That has always been a particularly difficult word for my lips to form, especially on unexpected occasions. In my mind I know exactly what I want to say and when and how I want to say it, but every now and then my words come out in repetitive longer syllables(音节).
I have dealt with stuttering(口吃)my entire life, but people around me seldom notice my problem, since I have this speech impediment(缺陷)to a very limited degree and experience it only in certain situations. However, it has the same effect on my life as if I had it to its full degree. For many years I have worn a mask, one giving the appearance of fluency. I’ve made a relatively successful attempt to hide my stutter.
However I exhausted myself. I reached a breaking point, unable to bear the pressure of pretending to be somebody I was not. After years of refusing to seek help, I was forced to admit that there was a problem.
My doctor is a woman who stutters severely herself but she is not ashamed when speaking at her slow pace. Entering her office the first time, I watched a videotape of her giving a speech in a college class, stuttering uncontrollably for ten minutes. It reminded me of myself. I discovered that I really wasn’t alone after all.
Her office is a place of safety, a place where I will not be judged for my imperfect speech. It’s a safe place where I won’t receive curious or impolite stares from those who don’t understand what it’s like to struggle with the simplest daily task—a place where I can stutter freely.
I accept that I have this disability and consider myself lucky. I feel honored to be among those who are disabled because we are able to value certain abilities normally taken for granted by others.

In Toano’s fitness lab, the students are playing video games, but it isn’t something out of the ordinary—it’s encouraged, especially when it allows students to become active, said Norm Brungot, physical education teacher and athletic director at the Williamsburg-James City County middle school.
It isn’t unusual to see students playing baseball or bowling using the lab’s Wii(一种游戏机)or breaking into sweat dancing along with a game.
“It’s all about getting students to move around, and the Wii and many video games allow students to do that, ”said Brungot.“This definitely isn’t your parents’ gym class. ”
Toano’s fitness lab, which opened last fall, is the latest addition to the middle school’s physical education program. The lab, which is located in a rebuilt athletic place, is equipped with modern equipment such as exercise bikes, rowing machines and elliptical machines(椭圆机),in addition to the video games.
He said getting students more active was one of the reasons that he and Trainum decided to develop the fitness lab. “We knew the middle school schedule was going to change, and we wanted a new way of keeping students interested in fitness, ”Brungot said.
“As soon as we knew we had a room available, we decided to move ahead with the project, ”he said. Trainum agreed. “Our final goal at this school is to build kids into lifelong learners, which not only means teaching them how to add and multiply, but to be healthy citizens as well, ”said Trainum, who said students are already getting the benefits of the lab.
Seventh-grader Travis Sink said working out in the center has encouraged him to work out in his spare time. “My dad signed us up to use the gym at the center and I love it, ”Travis said. “I already know how to use the equipment and everything. ”

It all started off with five. It was slightly drizzling(下毛毛雨),and my dad had told me that I had to make five free throws(罚球)in a row before I could go home. I was ten at the time and I couldn’t believe he wanted me to make that incredible amount. So I stood and shot until I made five free throws in a row. After every practice, no matter how long it took, I made five free throws in a row. Pretty soon the number of free throws increased from twenty to fifty, until I got to high school and I had to make seventy-five in a row before I could leave the gym.
One memorable afternoon, there was a hole in the ceiling of the gym and apparently there was a beehive on the roof. The floor was covered with bees and occasionally one would just start flying out of nowhere. I was on number seventy-three and a bee decided to fly into my ear right before the ball left my fingertips. I shrieked and grabbed my ear and completely missed the shot. My dad just looked at me and said I had to start over. When I started to argue, he just looked at me, saying“What are you going to do at game time ”I wanted to ask him, “Would there be many beehives in the stands ",but I decided to hold my tongue. And fifteen minutes later I finally made seventy-five in a row.
My high school team was playing Royal High School in the Nike Tournament of Champions. We had played Royal High School a week earlier and had lost to them by twenty points, so this game was all about revenge(复仇). Royal had one girl on their team who was incredible. Her name was Kelly and she could score at will. Whenever we were at the free throw line she would act as if she was so good it didn’t matter if we made free throws, her team was still going to win.
With two minutes left in the game, my team was up by six and their coach ordered them to foul(犯规). Our coach, seeing this, immediately called a time out and drew out a brilliant game plan. Give the ball to me—every time. I was a little shocked. I wasn’t a standout player. I did my job, got my ten points and called it a day. My best friend and fellow teammate pulled me aside and told me I was the best free throw shooter on the team. I could do it. I said, “Okay, I guess. ”

Even before I had my own kids, whenever I went into a bookstore, I’d end up in the children’s section. Once there, I’d pass by the novels and stories quickly, take a good look at the picture books, then I’d be in front of the children’s poetry books. Soon, I’d be reading and laughing and lost in thought and happy and wondering why all the customers in the store weren’t right there with me.
I don’t think that good children’s poetry is for children only. It’s written for them, but cupcakes are intended to be for kids, too. I grew up learning and studying classic poems in school, and I’ve read famous works by contemporary poets as well, so I’m not talking about children’s poetry at the exclusion(排斥)of other works. But I find something absolutely magical in the best poetry written for kids—that wonderful poetic ability to see and explore the world freshly, to find humor and truth and express it through perfect words perfectly placed. I’ve seen the great effect the poetry has on its target audience.
A few years ago, I became a volunteer elementary school librarian. I decided that before every read-aloud book, I’d read a poem because I loved kids’ reactions to the poems. I’ve had children come up to me weeks after hearing a poem and repeat it nearly whole.
This year, to celebrate National Poetry Month, an event called 30 Poets/30 Days was started at my blog(http://gottabook. ). Every day in April, I’ll be posting a previously unpublished poem by a different children’s poet. These 30 poets have published over 700 books for children and teens, and the poetry promises to be wonderful.
I’d love to hear if you already have favorite poems/poets and if the month ahead ends up adding new names to your list. I encourage everyone to visit and read a poem to yourself or with a child.

American teens are setting an example for their parents through their volunteer work, according to a new survey by Harris Interactive. They found that more teens volunteer to support a charitable cause(慈善事业)—56 percent—than have a part-time job—39 percent.
Parents said 82 percent of the teens in their lives do something to support charitable causes, including volunteering, recruiting(招募)others to a cause, wearing a button or T-shirt or donating(捐赠) money. Forty-six percent of the adults surveyed said they volunteer their time, but they also take credit for inspiring their children to volunteer.
Sara Johnson is a teacher who advises students at a private school. She says she’s seen an enthusiasm among teens for joining in social causes since President Barack Obama was elected in November last year.
The Harris Interactive survey found a quarter of teens have become more involved in charitable causes or organizations as a result of the economic downturn (经济衰退). But the economy has also led to cuts in income, and has teens working more hours at a paying job.
Unlike many public high schools across the nation, Illiana Christian High School does not require its students to clock public service hours. Senior Melissa Martin said some kids are too busy with other things like sports and music, but most of her classmates do volunteer work.

Computers in China
According to a recent investigation, about 30% of the city families have computers. Besides, many village people are more and more interested in computers and some of them even have bought computers. About 70% of the parents bought computers for their children to study, and some for their work. And even some people bought them for entertainment. The fact how the middle school students use the computers really surprises us. Only about 30% of them use computers to search for information on the Internet. What is worse, about 60% use computers to play games and 10% use computers to watch VCDs or listen to music. In my opinion, we should make better use of our best invention—computers.
