A
President Barack Obama has complained about the loss of privacy that comes with being leader of the United States, regretting the loss of simple pleasures such as a long walk or a trip to the car wash or supermarket.
“I just miss—I miss being unknown, ”he said. “I miss Saturday morning, rolling out of bed, not shaving, getting into my car with my girls, driving to the supermarket, squeezing the fruit, getting my car washed, taking walks. I can’t take a walk. ”
His dream, he said, was to“go through Central Park and watch folks passing by...spend the day watching people—I miss that. ”
Faced with criticism for playing more golf than most previous occupants of the White House, he explained that the sport was simply the best way of getting relaxed.
“It’s the only excuse I have to get outside for four hours, ”he told Hearst magazines.
Though he said he enjoyed his life in the White House, he felt disappointed with some of the ways of Washington, which he has failed to change, such as the “kabuki dance(日本歌舞)”among political parties before serious policy discussions begin. His comments may be seen as an excuse by critics who have accused him of appearing too cold, and being slow to engage in important issues such as Libya and the near shutdown of the U. S. government last week.
Since arriving at the White House in January 2009, Mr. Obama has already racked up(打)60 rounds of golf in office, more than George W. Bush did in his eight years.
In terms of ability, Golf Digest magazine has ranked Mr. Obama eighth out of the 18 presidents who played the game since it became established in the early 20th century.
36. What do the second paragraph and the third paragraph mainly tell us
A. Obama likes to watch folks passing by.
B. Obama likes going shopping with his girls.
C. Obama likes to take a walk.
D. Obama wishes to enjoy simple pleasures.
37. According to Obama, he plays golf to________.
A. get relaxed
B. show his ability
C. avoid criticism
D. show his advantage over the former presidents
38. What does the underlined word“It”refer to in the fifth paragraph
A. Playing golf.
B. Getting relaxed.
C. Changing some ways of Washington.
D. Watching people.
39. What is the best title of the passage
A. Obama complains about lack of privacy as president
B. Obama can’t live a normal life
C. Obama is often criticized
D. Obama likes to play golf

Astronomy is the oldest science known to man. Thousands of years ago man looked at the stars and wondered about the heavens. But man was limited by what he could see with his eyes alone.
The Greeks studied astronomy over 2, 000 years ago. They could see the size, color, and brightness of stars. They could see their places in the sky. They watched the stars move as the seasons changed. But the Greeks had no tools to help them study the starry
heavens.
Each new tool added to the files of astronomy; it helped man reach out into space. Until there were telescopes(望远镜),man knew little about the moon. They did not know that the planet called Saturn(土星)has rings around it. Their sight was so limited that they could not see all the planets. In the early 1700s, people thought there were only six planets.
Before the spectroscope(分光镜),man did not know what kind of gases is in the sun or other stars. Without the radio telescope(电望远镜)we did not know that radio noises come from far out in space.
Today, astronomy is a growing science. We have learned more in the last fifty years than in the whole
history of astronomy.
40. The passage mainly tells us________.
A. the spectroscope helps man know what kind of gases is in the sun and other stars
B. there are nine planets in space
C. there was much noise in space
D. science can’t grow fast without modern technology
41. Thousands of years ago, ________.

B. telescopes helped man to study the stars
C. man knew nothing about the sky
D. man knew Saturn had rings around it
42. When the Greeks watched the stars, they knew all of the following except ________.
A. the color of the stars
B. the size of the stars
C. the movement of the stars
D. what the stars were made of
43. Man now knows ________.
A. the moon has rings around it
B. there are six planets
C. Saturn’s rings can be seen by human eyes
D. radio noises come from far out in space

You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the start they only fight with their fists. But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes(撞击) through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead.
Of course he is not dead. With any luck he is not even hurt. Why Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains, who crash cars even catch fire, are professionals. They do these for a living. These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they perform tricks.
There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress(床垫). Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft plastic.
But although their work depends on trick of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman’s success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is“blown up”in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.
Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff(悬崖)a thousand feet high. His parachute(降落伞)failed to open, and he was killed.
In spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only. Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous actions. For nowadays there are stunt-girls too!
44. Stuntmen are those who________.
A. often dress up as actors
B. prefer to lead dangerous lives
C. often perform seemingly dangerous actions
D. often fight each other for their lives
45. Stuntmen earn their living by ________.

46. When a stuntman falls from a high building, ________.
A. he needs little protection
B. he will be covered with a mattress
C. his life is endangered
D. his safety is generally all right
47. What can be inferred from the author’s example of the Norwegian stuntman
A. Sometimes an accident can occur to a stuntman.
B. The percentage of serious accidents is high.
C. Parachutes must be of good quality.
D. The cliff is too high.

In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical(热带的)Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen become the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that are called hurricanes, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people.
The great storms that hit the coast start as soft circling wind hundreds—even thousands—of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the southeast winds. When conditions are just right, warm, moist(潮湿)air flows in at the bottom of such a wind, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process(过程), the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it the heat is changed to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to move in a counter clockwise motion(逆时针运动).
The life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released(释放)by a hurricane’s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction(毁灭)in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6 to 12 inch downpours, causing sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea—the mountains of water moving toward the hurricane center. The water level rises as many as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore.
48. When is an ordinary tropical storm called a hurricane
A. When it begins in the Atlantic and Caribbean seas.
B. When it hits the coastline.
C. When it is more than 75 miles wide.
D. When its winds reach 75 miles per hour.
49. What is the worst thing about hurricanes
A. The terrible effects of water.
B. The heat they give off.
C. That they last about nine days.
D. Their strong winds.
50. Here the underlined word“downpours”means ________.
A. heavy rainfall
B. dangerous waves
C. the progress of water to the hurricane center
D. the increasing heat
51. Which statement about a hurricane is WRONG
A. It travels more than 75 miles per hour.
B. It usually stays about 9 days.
C. It usually causes 6 to 12 inch downpours.
D. It sometimes brings the sea water level to the height of 15 feet.

As of 2020, space tourism will become a reality. You can book flights with 330 other people who want to fly into space. At this time, the cost is $200, 000 per flight, but it is expected that the cost will soon come down. It is estimated that by 2025 about 15, 000 people will fly into space every year.
No doubt these advances will lead to new extreme sports for brave people to try. By 2025 a famous actress that wants to give her career a boost might try to ride a surfboard(冲浪板)in space, through the atmosphere, and then sail past a beach in California before landing on the nearby ocean, and then surf back to the beach. The surfboard will be extra large, and it can control weather.
At the start of the flight, she will have to wear a space outfit and be strapped onto the surfboard which will act as protection. But as it gets lower in height and it becomes warmer, she can start taking off her clothes. The world’s media will watch and report on every move as she throws each piece away, and watch as the pieces quickly burn up. As she gets lower and glides the surfboard over to the beach near Los Angeles, she will get rid of the rest. So she will be wearing a bikini as she glides in and lands on the ocean and then goes on to surf into the beach.
The only foreseeable problem with this extreme sport is that a day will have to be found in which there isn’t too much garbage in the ocean.
52. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Surf in space.
B. Space tourism.
C. Family life in the space.
D. Space environment.
53. The actress will try the extreme sport to ________.
A. become famous overnight

b. surfs into the beach
c. gets lower in height
d. wears a space outfit
A. dcab B. dcba
C. abcd D. acbd
55. What happens to the clothes the actress throws away

Dear Li Ming,
I’m sorry to hear that you are not doing very well in your English listening. As a result, you scored quite low in each test. As for this, you’d better consider the following three problems and follow my advice.
First, do you have a good vocabulary If not, you’d better make a plan to enlarge your vocabulary by memorizing a few words and expressions every day.
Second, how much time do you spend listening to English materials every day On average, the time ranges from 10 to 20 minutes every day.
Third, how well do you make use of your listening skills In fact, mastering such basic skills is important and necessary, like going through the questions and answers quickly, predicting what the conversation is about, and trying to decide its main idea.
As you know, practice makes perfect. So long as you keep on trying, you are sure to make great progress. Looking forward to your good news.
Yours truly,
Li Hua

As the hot tears rolled down her face, I knew I had asked the wrong question. The words reverberated(回响)in my mind: Widowed or divorced(离异的)
“Well, you could call me widowed, ”she replied. “My husband died five months ago today. ”
“I’m so sorry, ”I said. “I needed it to fill out your credit application. ”
“Don’t worry about it, honey, ”she said. “If I never thought about it, I would not remember the love and the memories we shared. Even after 50 years of marriage, each passing moment would bring a deeper meaning to the word‘love’.”
I began to deal with her credit application, words hung in the air. My mind was not focused on the task, and I was unsuccessful in my first few attempts. After I finally completed it, she continued in a heart-to-heart. I couldn’t believe someone could open up to a perfect stranger.
“Have you ever been married ”she asked.

“Ah, no, ”I replied. “I’m only 16. ”
“Sixteen ”she murmured(嘟嚷). “That’s a great age, an age of lessons. There’s so much worth learning. ”
She then spoke in a whisper, sharing the one lesson that I will carry with me the rest of my life. “Never take anyone for granted(不把……当回事). If you are in love with someone, let it be known as often as you feel it. Otherwise, life may pass you by. Don’t spend your life angry. A walk through the Amazon rainforest today, you will find it is steamy, warm, damp and thick. But if you had been around 15, 000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same
For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests like the Amazon might have reacted(反应)to the cold, dry climates of the ice ages, but until now, no one has reached a satisfying answer. Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to slow global warming. Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tons of CO2 each year: equal to the total amount of CO2 giving off in the UK each year. But how will the Amazon react to future climate change If it gets drier, will it still survive and continue to draw down CO2 Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past. Unfortunately, getting into the Amazon rainforest and collecting information are very difficult. To study past climate, scientists need to look at fossilized pollen, kept in lake muds. Going back to the last ice age means drilling deep down into lake sediments(沉淀物), which requires specialized equipment and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths, or places to land helicopters and aeroplanes. Rivers tend to the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rivers completely unsampled(未取样). So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon rainforest reacts to climate change.

Thinking about what to cook every day is a daunting task for most women. Many times, women spend most of their time in the shopping market thinking about what groceries to buy, and end up with a whole lot of stuff in the fridge and kitchen cupboard which they finally throw away. It also leads to a waste of time and more importantly, money. Thus, it is very important to be organized in this matter, and the easiest way of doing this is by family menu planning.
Many shopping malls offer sale on groceries and food items on some particular days of the week. You can plan out your family menu plan according to that. First of all, check your fridge and cupboard and make a list of things that are available to you. As per this, make out a list of dishes that you are going to have for breakfast, lunch and dinner for a week. Then make your grocery list of what you would need for your menu plan. Doing this every time before you go to the grocery shop would help in cutting down on your expenses, and also save the frequent trips you make to the grocery store.
Before starting to make the plan, think about which days you would be very busy and which you would have less work. If you usually have to stay late at your work place on Thursdays, plan out certain easy dinner ideas or eat out on Thursdays. As everyone is at home on Saturdays and Sundays, put in some special dishes on your menu plan for these days. You may also need a menu plan for holiday cooking as the kids would be at home the whole day. However, it is important to remember that though there are certain rules in menu planning, your meal plan should be flexible(灵活的)too. If on some day, you have to do overtime at work or you fall sick, you can exchange that day’s menu with some other day.
If you are not comfortable with weekly or monthly menu planning, you can choose a single day family menu plan. Here, you can check what is left over in the refrigerator and make your meal plans accordingly(相应地).
Whichever family menu planning method you choose, the result would be that you no longer have to worry about daily meals. It is also one of the best ways of giving your family a healthy diet and teaching good eating habits to your kids.
44. According to the passage family menu planning is a way of ________.

A. Making a long-term menu plan.
B. Buying things that you like most.
C. Making a list according to the menu plan.
D. Making plans to buy things at a lower price.
46. Before you make your menu plans you should first ________.
A. buy as many things back as possible
B. make an everyday work-and-play plan
C. search information about the nearby grocery stores
D. check what is left in your refrigerator and cupboard

Galloping(飞奔)on horseback across a rocky plain, a man rides with a golden eagle on his hand. As a rabbit runs out from behind a large stone, the eagle runs after the rabbit.
Golden eagles can spot prey a mile away. But this eagle is not hunting for herself; she’s claiming it for her master.
The bird’s owner, named Baitolda, is a member of a group of Kazakh people who have trained eagles for hundreds of years. For these Kazakhs, who live in Mongolia, a country in Asia, these birds are both hunting companions and honored family members. Eagle hunters, called burkitshi in the Kazakh language, are some of the most respected members of their community. And Baitolda is one of the best.
“The eagle must depend on the hunter for food, ”says Baitolda. “If she learns how to feed herself, she might go wild and not come back. ”
One of Baitolda’s techniques is to set the bird on a high stone, hold up a rabbit leg and call, “Kaa, Kaa”to get the eagle to speed toward him. The eagle quickly learns the lesson: returning to her owner means lunch!
Baitolda is one of about 150, 000 Kazakhs who still live a traditional nomadic(游牧的)lifestyle. When the seasons change, families load up camels, and sometimes trucks, with their belongings and walk through the mountains on horseback to find fresh grass for their sheep. Only in winter do families return to permanent houses.
During the journey, Baitolda’s eagle rides on his hand and has a place inside the family’s tent. But the eagle also earns her keep. The foxes and hares she catches provide fur for the family’s winter clothing.
When an eagle turns eight, Kazakhs traditionally let the bird go back into the wild to forget her training. As a burkitshi named Khopei says, “They have to live free to make more eagles. ”

Last year we began recycling all of our glass, paper and plastic. We changed all light bulbs(灯泡)throughout our home to those energy-saving bulbs, and we stopped purchasing bottled water. In addition, we made it a point to use reusable bags when grocery shopping.
Although I was proud of all the changes we had already made, I felt that we could take it a step further for the new year and do more. I was especially interested in teaching my kids to become more involved in learning how important it is to take care of the environment.
I figured that, in our own way, we were already giving something back to Mother Earth. But wouldn’t it be great if we could give more to organizations that support causes(事业)which help the less fortunate around the world What I decided to do was to give the money we earned from recycling to charity. My seven-year-old son, Brayden, would even be able to join in, as he was responsible for sorting the items and taking them to the recycling center with me. He would help me decide which charity to support. He could help to do the research about the various charities on the Internet. I loved the idea of teaching my son that it doesn’t matter how much you give, and that what matters is that you give. The smallest donation can make a difference.
As this year comes to a close, we are all proud of the steps we have taken to make a difference. And next year, although the dollar amount won’t be huge, we will go on doing our part to help the environment and make this world a better place. All of the changes we make don’t have to be huge, but if everyone becomes involved, just think of the difference we could make.

A. The author recycled things in his life.
B. The author taught his son to do something to protect the environment.
C. The author donated more money to those in need.
D. Everyone should make huge changes to the world.
54. What can we learn about Brayden according to the fourth paragraph
A. He joined his parent for those good deeds.
B. He had a negative attitude towards recycling.
C. He had been involved in charity for almost seven years.
D. He took some waste things to the recycling center himself.
55. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. The author taught his son that how much he gives to others is most important.
B. The author donated all the money he earned from work to charity.
C. The author recycled things at home to protect the environment.

Boys and girls,
I am from a poor family. My grandparents are over 80 years old and they often fall ill because of their old age. Though my parents work hard from dawn till dark, they cannot earn enough money to cover my school fees so that I almost had to drop out of school. At the beginning of this term, I received some money from Ms Huang, a Chinese-American, which enabled me to continue my study. I learned that Ms Huang studied in China from primary school to university and then she went to America to further her education. Though she is not very rich now, she is willing to help the poor children in China. I do appreciate her help and I have made up my mind to study much harder so that I can make greater progress.
That’s all. Thank you.
