On the outside, 12-year-old Luna seems like your average kid. It’s not until you get to know her that you learn that Luna is anything but average.
Born with a heart defect (缺陷 )called dextrocardia, Luna has had three open-heart operations and continues to pursue her interests in art and fashion. But when Luna was approached by athletic shoe company Saucony to design a pair of shoes for sale across the country, it came as quite a surprise.
“This is so incredible.I got to use my art and creativity for something new that I’d never thought I’d be able to design,”Luna said. She is one of the six patients from Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) who have partnered Saucony to design their own shoes to launch the Shoes with Soul campaign.
“Rather than just a donation, we wanted to create an experience and a moment that would raise not only money, but also awareness to highlight all the amazing work that’s being done at BCH,” says Chris, Saucony’s vice president.“Specifically,we wanted to give some of the BCH kids an opportunity to share their story and their talents with the world.”
Luna’s design is fashion.“On the tongue, they digitalized one of my drawings, and then at the bottom it’s a really bright pink color, and on the inside, the sole of the shoe is actually another drawing I did of a sunset,” she said.“Thinking about kids everywhere around the world wearing my shoes is amazing.It__blows__my__mind.”
The income from the shoe sales will benefit the Boston Children’s Hospital Cardiac Fitness Program, which encourages kids to “find your possibility” through personalized exercise programs tailored for each individual patient’s heart condition.
“It feels really good to help people and it’s really something I can relate to,” says Luna.“The advice I would give a kid or someone like me is ‘Never give up’.There are a lot of kids out there with your condition and you’re not alone.”

Food made from atmospheric carbon could feed the world while helping to fight climate change, according to Solar Foods,a Finnish company founded in 2017.“We can collect CO2 anywhere,” said its CEO Pasi Vainika, whose company has developed a protein powder made using CO2.“That’s a strategic shift where raw materials are in the air.” The protein powder, called Solein, can be turned into meat and dairy substitutes or added to foods and shakes.
Solar Foods uses special units to pull CO2 from the atmosphere. To turn it into protein, microbes(微生物),similar to those in the production of wine and yogurt, will be fed on it to grow and reproduce.During the process, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen.Along with a growth medium containing necessary minerals, the three gases are pumped in to feed the microbes.Harvested and dried, that remaining mixture becomes Solein—a yellow powder made up of single-cell protein, with a nutrient composition similar to wheat flour.
Solar Foods claims that Solein removes most of the emissions associated with modern agriculture, which is responsible for almost one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions.“One kilogram of Solein sends out 0.2 kilogram of CO2e(二氧化碳当量).In comparison, beef herds produce around 100 kilograms and chicken 10 kilograms,”said Vainikka.“We can remove the climate impact of modern food systems on the planet, which today account for about 30 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.”He further stressed that while the company’s factories also require some land used for industrial farming, only about one-tenth of the land is needed compared to photosynthesis(光合作用).“We could free up agricultural land to grow back forests,” he added,“and those remove carbon permanently from the atmosphere.”
Probably optimists are now contenting themselves with the pleasant scene of masses of trees absorbing CO2 on the planet. However, while that may sound great,Vainikka puts it right,“It can happen only if we produce enough Solein from CO2 to replace meat and dairy at a large scale.”And that still remains a long way to go.
8.What can we say about Solein
A.It is in the air.
B.It can be changed into meat.
C.It can take in CO2.
D.It is good for the environment.

10.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about Solein
A.Its present situation.
B.Its possible benefits.
C.Its production process.
D.Its potential drawbacks.
11.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Air Protein Produced,CO2 Reduced
B.Collecting Air,Removing CO2
C.Climate Changing,Danger Coming
D.Protect Earth,Save Ourselves
答案 A
故选A。

There is something to be said for being a generalist, even if you are a specialist.Knowing a little about a lot of things that interest you can add to the richness of a whole,well-lived life.
Society pushes us to specialize,to become experts. This requires commitment to a particular occupation, branch of study or research. The drawback to being specialists is we often come to know more and more about less and less. There is a great deal of pressure to master one’s field. You may pursue training, degrees,or increasing levels of responsibility at work. Then you discover the pressure of having to keep up.
Some people seem willing to work around the clock in their narrow specialty. But such commitment can also weaken a sense of freedom. These specialists could work at the office until ten each night, then look back and realize they would have loved to have gone home and enjoyed the sweetness of their family and friends,or traveled to exciting places, meeting interesting people.Mastering one thing to the exclusion(排除) of others can hold back your true spirit.
Generalists,on the other hand, know a lot about a wide range of subjects and view the whole with all its connections. They are people of ability, talent, and enthusiasm who can bring their broad perspective(视角) into specific fields of expertise(专长).The doctor who is also a poet and philosopher is a superior doctor, one who can give so much more to his patients than just good medical skills.
Things are connected.Let your expertise in one field fuel your passions in all related areas. Some of your interests may not appear to be connected but, once you explore their depths, you discover that they are.My editor Toni, who is also a writer, has edited several history books. She has decided to study Chinese history.Fascinated by the structural beauty of the Forbidden City as a painter, she is equally interested to learn more about Chinese philosophy.“I don’t know where it will lead, but I’m excited I’m on this pursuit.”
These expansions into new worlds help us by giving us new perspectives. We begin to see the interconnectedness of one thing to another in all aspects of our life,of ourselves and the universe.Develop broad, general knowledge and experience. The universe is all yours to explore and enjoy.
To become a specialist, one may have to .
A.narrow his range of knowledge
B.avoid responsibilities at work
C.know more about the society
D.broaden his perspective on life
答案 A
故选A。
13.The specialists mentioned in paragraph 3 tend to .
A.treasure their freedom
B.travel around the world
C.spend most time working
D.enjoy meeting funny people

A.is fully aware of his talent and ability
B.is a pure specialist in medicine

D.brings knowledge of other fields to work
15.What could be the best title for the passage
A.Be More a Generalist Than a Specialist
B.Specialist or Generalist:Hard to Decide
C.Turn a Generalist into a Specialist
D.Ways to Become a Generalist
答案 A
故选A。

Probably, most of you had the feeling before,at least once—you had been waiting for a long time, yet being afraid of getting. It was exactly my state of mind before the first day at college.I had been working hard to pass the necessary tests and have my application to the undergraduate programme in management approved. And when the time had come for me to visit the college for the first day of the study,I couldn’t sleep all night because of being anxious about how to look good physically in front of the whole new world I was about to enter. However, the positive attitude and readiness to accept support from others helped a lot in a new environment.
It was Monday morning.Being too excited to sleep the night before,I came to the college half an hour earlier for the first lecture and was walking nervously through the hallway.About 15 minutes after I came, the hallway started to be full of students.Professors who walked on their business probably didn’t pay attention to me.I knew which hall to go to and had already checked that it was open. However,I was hesitant to enter the hall and sit there alone.People were moving around me as if they hadn’t seen me.I felt disappointed with the fact that I had nobody to talk to in the new and seemingly unfriendly place.
Suddenly,a well-dressed man who seemed to be in his late twenties approached me.He introduced himself as Mathews and asked whether I was lost and whether he could help me with anything. In that situation,I realized it was very kind of him and that he was exactly the person I wanted to ask in my thoughts a minute before, but then I was too nervous for a friendly chat.As a result, instead of welcoming the opportunity to make the first acquaintance(相识),I told the man to mind his business and leave me alone since I was an adult capable of finding my class without anybody’s assistance.
Luckily, the man didn’t seem to be angry.
Professor Mathews turned out to be an excellent speaker and the lecture went really well.
Luckily, the man didn’t seem to be angry. He just shrugged, smiled a bit and went to the room where my first lecture was about to take place.Quite a lot of people had entered the room,so I didn’t care about having an unhappy experience with one of my future peers.I was embarrassed, however, when I finally learned that the man to whom I had been rude minutes before was our professor of the first lecture.
Professor Mathews turned out to be an excellent speaker and the lecture went really well. After the class was dismissed,I came to him to apologize for my bad manners earlier in the day.Professor Mathews said that he was not unhappy and on his first day as the student of our college,he was afraid and nervous, too. The incident helped me realize that I should not let emotional strain and anxiety prevent me from communicating with people openly and pleasantly.

D.broaden his perspective on life
13.The specialists mentioned in paragraph 3 tend to .
A.treasure their freedom
B.travel around the world
C.spend most time working
D.enjoy meeting funny people
14.According to the author,a superior doctor is one who .
A.is fully aware of his talent and ability
B.is a pure specialist in medicine
C.should love poetry and philosophy
D.brings knowledge of other fields to work
15.What could be the best title for the passage
A.Be More a Generalist Than a Specialist
B.Specialist or Generalist:Hard to Decide
C.Turn a Generalist into a Specialist
D.Ways to Become a Generalist
