There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew that at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes, waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia(马来西亚). I was moved.
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or by car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly(特别地)relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug(拥抱). I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten(饱经风霜的)face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.
I looked forward to the return journey.

在此处与prefer搭配构成prefer to do A rather than do B结构。
4. A way后接定语从句时,其关系词可以用in which,也可以用that。
in the way在……
11. B if not better than在句中是插入语,这样结构和意义就明确了。此处用as well as,表示“与……
except for表示的是不同类事物的对比(除去);except表示的是同类事物的对比(除去);in addition to(=besides)除……
13. B as well“也,还”,用于句末。
14. C surround可作及物动词,其被动结构常为be surrounded by/with。
15. A 本题中的population相当于the number of the people,故描述或说明它的形容词应用large或small。
16. A 本题中的population亦指the number of the people。
19. B 首先需要说明的是该题的情景是“the snake in the sleeping bag”(《睡袋里的蛇》)的惊险场面。
20. A settle down“定居下来”。
24. B take measures to do sth. “采取措施做某事”;stop sb. /sth. from doing sth.
26. A manage to do sth.
27. A out of sight“看不见”;out of reach“够不到”;out of order“杂乱;出故障”;out of place“不在原来的地方;不恰当”。
live on有“靠……
32. D 从句子中的目的状语to serve the people“为人民服务”来分析空格处所填的短语与fire and water的语意之间的联系,不是A项的“与……
go into“开始从事某类工作”;go through相当于live through,意为“经历,遭受”;go back on“违约,改变主意”;go along with sb. /sth.
35. A English-speaking
+n. +adj.
41. B more than willing to do sth.
42. A C项during是介词,不能接从句。
44. A be used as“被用作,被当做……
