Shaanxi kuaiban is a kind of traditional Chinese storytelling in the Shaanxi dialect(方言),with the rhythm(节奏)of bamboo strips(竹板).It can be performed by one person or a group.In June，2021，it was included on the list of national intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产).
The art form dates back to the late Qing Dynasty.Farmers used it to tell stories and make money.But now,people perform Shaanxi kuaiban at festivals, parties and art shows.
Yang Jinlong,45,is a well-trained Shaanxikuaiban artist.He first learned the art at the age of 9.Before that,he often went with his father, an amateur performer, to watch kuaiban performances.
“As a young boy，I was interested in the art form because many of the stories were about heroes.The performer tells stories while playing kuaiban. It’s easy for the audience to remember the stories since all the lines rhyme(押韵),” Yang said.
He has practiced Shaanxi kuaiban for more than 30 years.Since 2003, he has been teaching the art form to young people.
Yang has made some changes to the art form. When he tells modern stories，Yang gives up wearing the traditional clothes.Instead，he wears a suit. He also borrows many pop things like tap dance, ballet, jazz dance and the rhythm of popular music.His stories are mainly about more modern topics，like garbage sorting(垃圾分类) and the Chinese Olympic team.
“Art education is important to students in China.Just as many students learn to play Western musical instruments,there are many people learning traditional Chinese folk arts,including Shaanxikuaiban.They are hard-working and active,” Yang said.

One cannot discuss Chinese music without mentioning the guqin，one of the four arts-along with go, calligraphy(书法)and painting.It first appeared over 3,000 years ago and stands for China's solo musical instrument tradition.
At first，the guqin had only five strings(弦), meaning the five elements (元素) of metal, wood，water，fire and earth.Later, in the Zhou Dynasty, King Wen of Zhou added a sixth string for his son.King Wu of Zhou added a seventh string to encourage his army to fight with the Shang.
Ambience was important in playing the guqin. Usually,it was practiced in a quiet setting and never for public performances.Ancient artists enjoyed performing by a stream in the mountains. The sound of the guqin mixed with the echoes (回音)from the mountains,until the musician felt he was at one with nature.Playing it in snow was alsoan enjoyable activity for ancient artists,who believed the instrument was the purest of its kind in the world.Also,a night with moonlight was considered wonderful for playing the gugin.Wang Wei (701-761),a highly talented man of the Tang Dynasty,liked playing it in a bamboo forest on nights with moonlight most.
Guqin pieces are usually three to eight minutes long,with the longest being Guangling Verse,which is 22 minutes long.Other famous pieces include Plum Blossoms in Three Movements,Wild Geese Landing on the Sandbank and Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute.
Nowadays,there are fewer than one thousand well-trained guqin players and perhaps no more than fifty living masters.The original number of several thousand pieces has greatly reduced to only one hundred works by today.The guqin was added to the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity(人类非物质文化遗产)in 2003.
