A young woman turns around and around quickly, and jumps high. In the
background, a young girl reads a rejection(拒绝)letter from a ballet school. "You
have the wrong body for ballet, "it says, "and at thirteen, you are too old. " This was
one of the most popular advertisements (广告 ) of 2014 and it describes American
Ballet Theatre's principal (主要的) dancer Misty Copeland.
This was not a real letter. But Copeland says it is very similar to letters from her
childhood. While many dancers start at the age of three, Copeland only began to study
ballet in 1995 at the age of thirteen. People often told her that she was too old, or that
she didn't have the perfect body type (She is only 157 cm tall). Her family moved a
lot, and it was sometimes difficult for her to attend ballet classes. But Copeland loved
3
dancing and did not want to give up. She stayed with her ballet teacher during the

she worked hard and won her first national competition when she was fourteen years
old. Copeland joined the American Ballet Theatre in 2000 and performed in many
ballets over the next few years. In 2007, she became a solo (单独的) performer, and
in 2015 she became its principal dancer.

There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food,
taking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve
your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule
is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of (不管) age,
some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough.
The problem with sleep is that more and more people in the world are not
sleeping enough. According to the World Health Organization, over half the people in
the world may be sleep-deprived. Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired
but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least
100,000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems
such as high-blood pressure.
Why are so many people sleep-deprived Part of the reasons may be cultural. In
the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people
who sleep a lot are usually seen as “lazy". Also, you can sometimes hear some people
say proudly that they don't have much time to sleep and they only sleep four or five
hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you 'll do.
How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep Perhaps they may
listen to the advice of Dr James Maas, an expert in sleep. He says, “Sleep is like a
credit card(信用卡). When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always
have to pay it back. The more hours you don’t sleep, the more hours you should sleep
to pay back the hours on your 'sleep credit card’.”
For those who value work more than sleep, they should also listen to what a
famous person once said. "Don't think you will be doing less work because you sleep
during the night. That is a foolish idea which is held by people who are crazy about
work. In fact, you will be able to do more.”
31. According to the writer, the easiest and cheapest way to improve health is

Gift-giving is different from culture to culture and person to person.
When people give gifts, sometimes color is important. For example, for many
Chinese people around the world, red is a lucky color, and people often like to wrap
gifts in red. However, do you know that in South Korea red is a color of death That is
why you should not wrap your gifts in this color if you are giving a gift to a person
there.
What about Western countries In Western countries, the color of wrapping paper
is not really important. But color does matter when giving flowers, especially roses.
You should not give red roses to a Western person you don't know very well because
they are a symbol of love. You could give yellow roses instead, as these are a symbol
of friendship. You could also send pink roses as gifts to say thank you.
What other things should you remember when giving gifts to someone from a
different culture Well, one thing you should keep in mind is the person's religion.
When choosing a gift for a Muslim(穆斯林的 ) or Jewish(犹太教的 ) friend, you
should never get food including pork, or things made from pigskin. Another thing that
you should not give to a Muslim person is alcohol (酒).
36. In which country do people think red is the color of death
A. Japan B. The US C. South Korea D. The UK
37.How can we show our friendship to Western friends
6
A. By giving them yellow roses. B. By giving them red roses.
C. By giving them some food. D. By giving them products made from pig.
