In January 2022, the now l7-year-old Mack Rutherford watched his 19-year-old sister, Zara Rutherford, set two new world records for flying around the world in an ultralight aircraft. Less than a month later, Mack declared his intention to go for a world record too!
“I always knew I wanted to do something special in my life in aviation but I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do, it was only when my sister flew around the world that I knew this was what I wanted to do,” Mack said.
Mack is no stranger to aviation. He was only 15 when he became the youngest pilot in the world. Now, he’s set the record for the youngest person to fly around the world, replacing previous record-holder Travis Ludlow of Britain. Travis was 18 when he set the record in 2021.
Mack’s journey began on March 23rd, 2022 when he left Sofia, Bulgaria flying a Shark, an ultralight aircraft that’s the same style his sister used in her circumnavigation of the globe.
“I am flying a Shark,” Mack wrote on his website. “It is a high-performance ultralight aircraft made in Europe. The aircraft has been specially prepared for such a long journey.”
Mack traveled through 52 countries over five continents. The trip was supposed to take between two and three months, but paperwork and visa issues slowed his progress.
On August 24, 2022, Mack completed his journey and set not one, but two new world records! He’s now the youngest person to fly around the world solo. He displaced his sister as the previous record holder, but we’re sure there are no hard feelings!
As Mack stepped out of the aircraft in Belgium, he had some simple words of wisdom to offer the world.
“Just follow your dreams, no matter how old you are — work hard and move forward to achieve your goals,” he said.

Making it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee (a spelling competition) is an amazing achievement for any kid, but for 11-year-old Neil Maes, being born deaf made his journey especially unlikely.
After receiving cochlear implants (人工耳蜗) in both ears as a baby, he had to train his brain to understand spoken words. It took countless hours of speech therapy (疗法).
“We didn’t even know that he’d be able to talk,” said his mother, Christy Maes.
Now the soft-spoken kid from Belton, South Carolina is officially one of the nation’s top young spellers. He earned the right to take the stage in the final rounds of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Neil’s parents have always given him a tip, coaching him to always ask the pronouncer for the meaning of a word, so that he can be sure he heard it correctly. Most contestants do this anyway.
“He’s able to spell very difficult words. You tell him, ‘Spell this word,’ and he’s able to actually imagine what that sounds like in his head and spell the word. It’s actually quite impressive,” said Dr. Michael Hoa, who performed Neil’s cochlear implantation. “There’s a lot that goes into training your brain to do that.”
Neil’s parents didn’t know he was taking part in a spelling bee with his third-grade class until he came home and told them he had won. He made it all the way to his regional (地区的) bee that year, finishing second. Now a naturally shy fifth-grader, Neil is already worn out from the busy bee-week schedule, but he seems happy.
“Our main hope out of all of this was to encourage people that are going to be facing what we had to face,” Christy said.
But Neil said coming to the bee has motivated (激发) him to study even harder, so he can return next year.
“It’s just fun and I want to do it again,” Neil said.
8.What makes it difficult for Neil to enter the competition
A. He is naturally shy.
B. He is unable to talk.
C. He has a hearing disability.
D. He is undergoing medical treatment.
9. What does the underlined word “it” (in Para. 5) refer to
A. The tip from Neil’s parents. B. The coach’s pronunciation.
C. The meaning. D. The word.
10. What did Michael think of Neil
A. He’s amazing. B. He’s very lucky.
C. He should study harder. D. He should use his imagination.
11. What’s the best title for the text
A. Hard training will finally pay off
B. We can do more for disabled children
C. Spelling bees are becoming more popular
D. Deaf 11-year-old competes in National Spelling Bee
D
There have been few positives during the Covid pandemic but British academics may have spotted one: People look more attractive in protective masks.
Researchers at Cardiff University were surprised to find that both men and women were judged to look better with a face mask covering the lower half of their faces. They also discovered that a face covered with a disposable-type surgical mask (一次性外科罩) was likely to be considered the most attractive, which may be a blow for producers of fashionable coverings and the environment.
Dr Michael Lewis, a reader from Cardiff University’s school of psychology, said research before the pandemic had found that medical face masks reduced attractiveness because they were associated with illness.
“We wanted to test whether this had changed since face coverings became popular,” he said.
“Our study suggests faces are considered most attractive when covered by medical face masks. This may be because we’re used to healthcare workers wearing blue masks and now we associate these with people in caring or medical professions. At a time when we feel weak, we may find the wearing of medical masks secure and so feel more positive towards the wearer.”
The first part of the research was carried out in February 2021 by which time the British population had become used to wearing masks in some places. Forty-three women were asked to rate on a scale of 1 to 10—the attractiveness of images of male faces without a mask, wearing a plain cloth mask, a blue medical face mask, and holding a plain black book covering the area a face mask would hide.
The participants said those wearing a cloth mask were much more attractive than the ones with no masks or whose faces were partly covered by the book. But the surgical mask—which was just a normal, disposable kind--made the wearer look even better. Lewis said it was also possible that masks made people more attractive because they directed attention to the eyes. He said other studies had found that covering the left or right half of a face also made people look more attractive, partly because the brain fills in the missing gaps and beautify the overall effect.
The results of the first study has been published in the journal Cognitive Research: Principles and Implications. A second study has been carried out, in which a group of men look at women in masks; it has yet to be published but Lewis said the results were probably the same.
12.Why were protective masks not welcome before the pandemic
A. Because it reminded others of diseases.
B. Because the masks wore uncomfortably.
C. Because only doctors had the right to wear them.
D. Because some wearers couldn’t take a smooth breath.
13. Who looked more attractive according to the participants
A. Those with cloth masks. B. Those with surgical masks.
C. Those without any covering. D. Those with “book” masks.
14. Which of the following can’t explain the attraction
A. Those wearing masks may look more like doctors.
B. Viewers focus more on eyes when judging a person.
C. People like to imagine what a covered face look like.
D. It’s recognized that masks can hide facial imperfections.
15. Where is the text probably from
A.A book on biology. B. A medicine magazine.
C. A newspaper. D. A guidebook.

第二节读后续写 (满分25分)
47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For nearly four months, the little dog, Indiana, fortunately survived in the woods with a wounded shoulder. She'd been mistaken for a wolf and shot while running wild with her mother, Dakota. An animal control officer said they were the most strongly bonded pair he'd ever seen and the two dogs refused to leave each other's side, even while trying to escape being caught.
As a result of the gunshot, Indiana lost both her leg and her mother, for the two were sent to different adoption groups. While Indiana was learning to walk on three legs down south, Dakota was 1,000 miles north in New England. The first adoption family returned her two days later. They said the dog couldn't bond with humans, kept them up all night, and wasn't suitable to live in a home. Eventually, Dakota found her forever home with me on Long Island. I have experience with such dogs, and Dakota, a husky (哈士奇犬),just needed attention and someone who understood how to approach her. I always let her come up to me. I gave her the time and space to explore and feel comfortable. She soon let me put a belt on her and would lie on the sofa with me quietly.
When I, accidentally, read the post of Dakota's first adopter, it mentioned that the little dog Dakota had been running with was shot, and, I thought, killed. I'm a broadcast news journalist, so I always did some survey and, by chance, heard a story from a South Carolina TV news outlet about a dog that recently had her front leg cut off because of an old gunshot wound. And anyone who wanted to adopt Indiana was required to have a six-foot fence because she kept jumping over the one at the care shelter in South Carolina. There was no mistaking it—she looked exactly like Dakota. Indiana wasn't killed by the gunshot, just badly injured.
1.续写词数应为150 左右;
2.请在答题卡的相应位置作答。
While Dakota loved me and her new home, she still missed her kid.

More Exercise, Better Health
Nowadays, many students haven't realized how important exercise is and don't work out regularly, listing various reasons such as lack of lime or exhaustion from studying. However, taking regular exercise docs us students good, helping reduce stress and improve learning efficiency. Therefore, we should give priority to exercise however busy or tired we are. We can incorporate exercise into everyday routines, like squeezing in ten minutes daily for a jog.
Let's take action and exercise more from now!
47.答案:
While Dakota loved me and her new home, she still missed her kid. She would utter mournful howls whenever I took her out for walks in the woods. It seemed as if she was calling for her puppy to come back. The exact scene made me heart-broken, and I took action all at once, determined to reunite mother and pup. I called the TV station, asking for conditions about the little dog, only to be told that Indiana was receiving medical treatment for falling on the ground when jumping over the fence.
I decided to bring three-legged Indiana to my home. Instantly they got reunited, Dakota couldn't stop licking her puppy's face. Happy and excited, the two dogs were wagging their tails wildly. The heart-warming scene moved anyone on the spot. Dakota has since stopped her sorrowful howls while Indiana has never tried to jump over the fence. These once-separated dogs played together, chasing each other around the room and slept together with their noses resting on each other. If there is to be any devotion, it will come through any species.
