Music comes in many forms. Most countries have a style of their own. The US is well known for jazz, which has gained world-wide popularity.
In contrast to classical music, which follows formal European traditions, jazz is natural and free-form. It is full of energy, expressing the moods, interests, and feelings of the people. It has a modern sound that makes people very excited. In the 1920s jazz sounded like America. And so it does today.
The origins of this music are as interesting as the music itself. Jazz was produced by American blacks, who were brought to the Southern States as slaves. They were sold to plantation owners (种植园主) and forced to work long hours in the cotton and tobacco fields. This work was hard and life was short. When a Negro died, his friends and relatives formed a group to carry the body to the cemetery (墓地).
A band often went with them. On the way to the cemetery the band played slow and sad music. But on the way home the mood changed. Spirits lifted. Death had removed one of their members, but the livings were glad to be alive. The band played happy music, which made everyone want to dance. It was an early form of jazz.
Music has always been important in their ing mainly from West Africa, the black men who were brought to America already possessed a rich musical tradition. This music centered on religious ceremonies (宗教的仪式) in which dancing, singing, clapping and stamping (顿足) to the beat of a drum were important forms of musical expression. As these people settled into their fields, they made up work songs. Singing made the time of hard work go faster.
Another musical form that helped to develop jazz was the blues. Blues songs always describe something sad—an unhappy love affair, a money problem, bad luck. To this day, the expression “feeling blue” means being sad.
21. Through jazz, people can express .
A. their moods B. their feelings C. their interests D. all the above
22. The underlined sentence “Spirits lifted” suggested that .
A. everybody was feeling blue B. everybody was still in a sad mood

23. What can be the best title for this passage
A. A Kind of Light Music B. Black Men's Music
C. The Origin of the Jazz Music D. The Popular Music—Jazz in the USA.

Listening to music is considered a good thing for adults. Indeed it is. Scientific studies have proved it. Music has so many good effects on our bodies, minds and moods that this world will certainly not be a good place without music. Then, is music good for children Some parents think so and they let their children learn or listen to music. But some parents don't know the importance of music to children. Here are some reasons why music is important to children.
First, music is good for children's intelligence. Studies have proved that children who learn music are likely to have higher intelligence than those who have no interest in or dislike music. This is because the brain gets stimulated (刺激) by the rhythm and tone of music.
Music also has a soothing (抚慰的) effect on children and helps remove their stress. Today's children are under a lot of stress from schoolwork. Being under too much stress impairs children's health. Luckily, listening to music can help them feel better.
Music can improve children's moods. Some children are sad by nature. They seem to be lost in their own thoughts and don't take interest in their surroundings. In such cases, a method known as “music therapy” comes to their rescue. It changes their moods and places a new kind of spirit in them.
Music is also a universal language that children ought to learn. Our world has become a global village. People are getting more and more interested in other cultures and countries. Music can help them in understanding foreign cultures.
Now we can say that music is very important not only to adults but also to children. So children should be encouraged to learn music or listen to music.

Generally, the blues are often associated with unhappy things. For example, if you lose your job, you might want to listen to the blues. Although the blues often deal with unhappy personal things, the music itself goes far beyond self-pity. The blues is also about overcoming hard luck, saying what you feel, ridding yourself of sadness, making you relaxed, and simply having fun.
The blues has deep roots in American history, particularly African-American history. The blues began in Southern plantations(大农场) in the 19th century. Its inventors were slaves, ex-slaves and the children of slaves—African-American sharecroppers(佃农) who sang as they worked in the cotton and vegetable fields.
The blues grew up in the Mississippi Delta just upriver from New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz. Blues and jazz have always influenced each other, and they still influence each other in many ways today. Unlike jazz, the blues didn't spread out quickly from the South to the Midwest until the 1930s and 1940s. When the Delta blues made their way up the Mississippi to urban areas, the music developed into electrified Chicago blues, other regional blues styles, and various jazz-blues hybrids. About ten years later, the blues gave birth to rhythms(节奏) ‘n’ blues and rock ‘n’ roll.
No single person invented the blues, but many people said they had discovered different styles of the blues. For example, a bandleader, W. C. Handy insisted that the blues was first shown to him in 1903 by a street guitarist at a train station in Tutwiler, Mississippi.
During the middle to late 1800s, the Deep South was home to hundreds of important bluesmen who helped to shape the music. Unfortunately, much of this original music followed these sharecroppers to their graves. But the music of these earliest blues pioneers can still be heard in the recordings of 1920s and 1930s from Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Georgia and other Southern states.

36 The French take great pride in their language, so anyone who does not speak it may run the risk of being disrespected by his French colleagues or business partners.

Dress well. 38 Your business clothing is a reflection of your success and social status. Always try to be tasteful and stylish. Women are advised to dress simply but elegantly. Wearing make-up is practised widely by businesswomen.
The French are passionate about food, so lunches are common in doing business in France, which usually consist of an appetizer, a main meal with wine, cheese, dessert and coffee, and normally take up two hours. 39

The day of the balloon festival, I felt as light as a hot-air balloon. This year, I wouldn't just be watching. I would be riding in Mr. Brown's truck, following the flight of the balloon and meeting it when it came down.
It was a perfect day. Dad and I drove down the road, looped around the lake, and turned into the field that was being used as a parking area. Dad pointed toward the lake. “That's where you'll find Mr. Brown's truck,” he said.
We stopped and got out of the car. And then I saw it — a white bird with a brown head and skinny legs. It cried and thrashed (激烈扭动) in the dirt in front of the cars that were driving downhill. Its wing looked broken. Suddenly it flew off.
“Dad!” I called. But my dad was watching the balloons.
“It has a nest (鸟巢) here somewhere,” a voice said.
I turned to see an old woman. “I'm Edie Thomas,” she said.
“I'm Nat,” I said. She shook my hand as if I were someone important.
Mrs. Thomas smiled. “It was a nesting place before it became a parking area. No one told the bird about the balloon festival.” Then she pointed with her cane ( 手杖). On the ground was a perfect clutch of eggs, looking like a heap of pebbles (鹅卵石). They were in the path of cars, trucks and motorbikes.
Screech. The parent bird was back, its wing all twisted again.
“They pretend to be wounded,” said Mrs. Thomas. “They lead enemies off, miles sometimes, before flying back. Those eggs sit there pretending to be rocks.”
“Nat!” Dad called. “Isn't it time you went down to see Mr. Brown ”
“Dad! I'm —”
I looked at the lake. The balloons were ready. Mr. Brown's truck was there, ready to go.
A bird cry forced me to look back. I felt as if I had a rock in my stomach. “Dad, I'm not going.”
“You're sure ”

读后续写67
“I can't,” I said. “I have to stay here so cars don't run over the nest.” Dad gave me a funny look. “I'll go tell Mr. Brown.” “If I can protect the nest today, it'll be OK, right ” I asked Mrs. Thomas. “No one parks here except for the balloon festival,” she said. We threw ourselves into the job of guarding those eggs. I raised my arms to signal to the drivers of the cars and Mrs. Thomas gave patient explanations. Soon a ring of cars surrounded the nest. Nothing coming down the hill was going to get those eggs.
All morning Mrs. Thomas and I watched balloons fly across the sky. Another white bird with an olive-brown head — the male — flew down. The first one left. “To eat,” said Mrs. Thomas. The male settled in, keeping an eye on us. Around noon, the festival was over. People began to leave. When Dad came back, only Mrs. Thomas and I were left. And one bird, watching over the four eggs in a nest — perfectly safe. I'd missed Mr. Brown's truck, but I didn't regret it at all.
