Frederic Chopin was born on 1 March, 1810 in Warsaw, Poland. His mother started teaching
him to play the piano when he was very young. As :his talent grew, the family paid a pianist
named Wojciech Zywny to teach him.
Before long, people found that Chopin had a gift for music. At the age of seven, he began
giving public concerts(音乐会). At age eight, he became a performer who was quite popular.
In 1826, Chopin entered the Warsaw Conservatory of Music, where he studied under Joseph
Elsner. Three years later, he performed two concerts in Vienna, Austria. From there, his name

Some poor children in villages in Botswana, an African country, have got Chedza Solar
Backpacks. With the backpacks(背包),they can study at night. The backpacks were invented by
Kedumetse Liphi. "Chedza" means "light" in English. "I hope to light up Africa and the future
of the children who use my backpacks," Liphi said.
There is a solar panel(太阳能电池板)in the backpack. It takes in sunlight during the day
and can power up (给……供电) things like mobile phones and computers at night. Also, the
bag's LED light can work for up to 7 hours.
The solar backpacks can improve the poor pupils' life in villages in Botswana. Through them,
the children can get electricity at night and their parents don't need to buy candles for them for
studying. And this helps them save some money.
In 2021, Liphi decided to make use of Botswana's strong sunlight to make the backpack.
With hard work and some electric parts from China, he succeeded. In April this year, he gave
some of the 80 bags to the students with the most need.
However, Liphi doesn't plan to stop there. He wants to have his own company make more
backpacks. "This will lower the price of the backpack and help more children. Also, most of
Botswana's electricity is from coal(煤),and it's bad for the environment. Solar power is the future
of power for our country and Africa as a whole because it is cheap and we have a lot of sunlight,"
he says. Although it's difficult, Liphi says he will not give up.

One thing you've probably already known by now is that ant brains are tiny! Ants are tiny
insects, so their brains must be even smaller to fit inside their little heads. Elephants, on the
other hand, are large animals. Soit's no surprise to learn that an elephant brain is large.
But just how big is an elephant brain Scientists tell us that the human brain weighs about
3 pounds. That's pretty big, considering the size of a human being. Elephant brains weigh 11-13
pounds - about four times the size of the human brain. Compared to a tiny ant brain, an elephant
brain is thousands of times larger!
But does brain size determine(决定)intelligence Not necessarily. When thinking about brain
size, it's helpful to compare the size of the brain to the size of its owner. If you compare the
ratio(比例)of brain to bodyweight in humans and elephants, you learn that this ratio is about 1:50
for humans and about 1:800 for elephants. So, for their size, humans have much bigger brains
than elephants.
Even though elephant brains aren't all that big compared to their size, they're known for their
intelligence and good memories. But what about ants and their brains Of all the insects in the
world, the ant has the largest brain. There are about 250,000 brain cells(细胞)in an ant brain.
And ants are widely considered to be the smartest insect in the world.
Although scientists have learnt a lot about the brain over the past hundred years, the brain
is so complex(费解的)that it can't be fully explained in simple words, such as size, and much
of how the brain works remains a mystery(谜).
37. The writer develops Paragraph 1 by .
A. telling stories B. showing facts
C. listing numbers D. asking questions
38. What information is mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. The size of an ant brain.
B. The weight of an elephant.
C. The height of an elephant.
5
D. The weight of a human brain.
39.Why does the writer say humans have much bigger brains than elephants
A. Because human brains are bigger in size.
B. Because human brains are much heavier.
C. Because humans have more cells in their brains.
D. Because humans have a higher ratio of brain to body weight.
40. From the last paragraph we can learn that .
A. there is still a lot to learn about the brain
B. scientists know almost nothing about the brain
C. scientists will do more studies on the size of the brain
D. the brain will remain a mystery for hundreds of years
第二节:阅读填空 (共 5 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 5 分)
"How are you " is a nice question. It's how people in the United States usually greet each
other. But “How are you " is also a very unusual question. 41. The person who asks “How
are you " hopes to hear the answer "Fine.", even if the person's friend isn't fine. The reason
is that, "How are you " isn't really a question and "Fine." isn't really an answer. 42.
Sometimes, people don't say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks,
"Do you agree ", the other person might think, "No, I disagree. I think you're wrong …." But
it isn't very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say, "I'm not sure." 43.
People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other
people. 44. Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse like "Someone's knocking
at the door." or “Something is burning on the stove(炉子).”The excuses might be real, or not.
45. Perhaps the person simply doesn't want to talk anymore, but it isn't polite to say that.
The excuse is more polite, and it doesn't hurt anyone's feelings.
To sum up(概括起来说),sometimes people don't say exactly what they are thinking or
meaning. It may sound a little crazy, but it's part of the game of language and a polite thing
to do!
A. Nobody cares if it is true.
B. It's a question that often doesn't need an answer.
C. They are simply other ways of saying "Hello." or "Hi."
D. It's a more polite way to say that you don't agree with someone.
E. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says "I have to go now."
