Ⅴ.阅读理解
You may hear the expression: “If you give a person a fish, they will eat for a day. If you teach a person to fish, they can eat for a lifetime.”
One way to explain this is that helping people grow their own food is a better way to fight hunger. That is the purpose of an agricultural research organization called HarvestPlus.HarvestPlus is teaching people around the world how to grow what it calls “smart” crops (庄稼). Its project in Mozambique, a country in Southeast Africa, is having surprising influences.
Sweet potatoes have vitamin (维生素) A, which keeps your eyes healthy and helps the body fight disease. In 2006, HarvestPlus workers provided orange sweet potato plants to people in 24 Mozambique villages. The workers taught these people how to grow the vegetables and also explained the importance of vitamin A to staying healthy.
Farmers in Mozambique had been planting white and yellow sweet potatoes, which have very little vitamin A. However, one small, orange sweet potato has a full day's supply of vitamin A.
Alan de Brauw from the International Food Policy Research Institute says about 70 percent of children there were not getting enough vitamin A. He says the potatoes had a surprising influence on the health of children. At the end of the three year study, the researchers found that children living in villages growing orange sweet potatoes had 40 percent fewer chances of getting diarrhea (痢疾) than other boys and girls. Among children under the age of three, the difference was 50 percent.
Experts (专家) are suggesting that connecting agriculture and health problems is natural and helpful.Anne Herforth, a food expert, says the findings do a good job making the connection between food production and health.“Look, you produce a food and it's available to people to eat and they like it; then it does good things for health.”

Throughout my educational years, despite the kind teachers I had met, I never felt interest in writing until I met her, Mrs.Kelley.At first, I believed that writing would still be my worst class.Gradually, my fondness increased. She taught the lesson in such a lively way and her word choice impressed me.But that was not what made her my favorite.Unlike other teachers, after instructions, she gave an enormous amount of freedom in what we wrote, allowing us to create our own stories using our imagination. And that mattered most.
There was one really revolutionary event: the historical fiction unit.We were to invent our own stories using the period we were given.World War Ⅱ was mine.At that point, I was just looking for a good grade.Rather than creating a mundane (平淡的) story, I wanted to make a story that I felt was meaningful. As I progressed, I was pulled further and further into the reality that I had made.Grammar no longer existed, as my hands gained acceleration. When I typed the final word, my hands trembled with excitement.Briefly, I read it over and then submitted the draft.
In the midst of anxiousness, Mrs.Kelley responded. She pointed out some mistakes and gave some suggestions.Sadly, there were no comments of recognition.I fixed the errors and moved on.But when waiting for the final grade, I erased all the unrealistic thoughts that wandered in my mind.
In the next class, surprisingly, after handing back my paper, Mrs.Kelley mentioned that my story was very good.I looked at her in confusion.Soon excitement stirred inside me.I found a “+5” attached to the score. She had given an extra point in “Plot”, adding an “Excellent!” No other teacher had done this.On that day, I felt what it means to be a writer.Mrs.Kelley introduced me to the beauty of literature and made writing so enjoyable.

On November 7, Lewis Pugh completed a one kilometer swim in the freezing waters of King Edward Cove, off South Georgia in Antarctica. He was wearing only his swimming glasses, cap and Speedos!
Pugh is an advocate for our oceans and seas, working to protect these ecosystems (生态系统) with their large diversity of marine (海的) life. When asked why he doesn't wear a wetsuit, Lewis says, “I ask world leaders to do everything they can to protect our oceans.Sometimes the steps they need to take are difficult and unpopular. If I'm asking them to be courageous, I must also be.Swimming in a wetsuit would not send the right message.”
It took Pugh about 19 minutes to complete the one kilometer swim in Antarctica where the water averaged about 1.6 degrees Celsius. He says that his body can only tolerate about 20 minutes in the freezing waters before it starts shutting down. As he swims, his body temperature steadily drops, which in turn causes his muscle control to drop, slowing him down. When he is done with his swim, his support team rushes him to a hot shower and it takes almost an hour for his body temperature to return to normal.
Doctors and Pugh caution that one must receive months of training to swim in such cold waters.Even expert swimmers who are unused to freezing water can drown within minutes because of the physical shock experienced by the body.Pugh says he trained for six months before this swim.
This is not the first time that Lewis has swum in dangerous conditions. In 2007, he swam one kilometer in the North Pole to draw attention to the melting Arctic ice due to climate change. In 2015, he swam in the Bay of Whales in Antarctica's Ross Sea as part of his successful campaign to help set up a marine reserve there.

Michelle Bruce and her husband, Jeremy, suffered serious illnesses, and their son, Holden, had a brain tumor (肿瘤). With three other children to take care of, the family moved to Michelle's hometown of Franklin, Nebraska, six years ago, so her parents could give a hand.
Doctors had found Holden's brain tumor when he was twelve. His family was living in a small town outside Lincoln, Nebraska, and there were no pediatric (小儿科的) brain doctors in the state. Holden had two operations at adult clinics in Omaha. Both treatments were tough, and swelling left him in an ICU for about a week.
When Holden's tumor returned in 2012, the Omaha clinic wasn't able to operate. But the Bruce family wouldn't quit. They reached out to Boston Children's Hospital, which has better equipment and doctors. After looking at Holden's records, the doctor sent back her prognosis:She was confident she could remove the tumor for good. However, the operation would costD|S39,000 — more than the parents could afford.
In a town of just 1,000 people, word travels fast. Within days, a local woman Michelle had never met in person called to say she was planning an event to raise money for Holden. Michelle felt surprised.
The day of the fundraiser (资金筹集活动) was freezing, but that didn't prevent Franklin people showing up. The event was encouraging, and the Bruce family never thought it could raise a couple thousand dollars. Back at her parents' house, Michelle got a call from the fundraiser's organizer. They'd made enough to cover the operation. In all, the town raised D|S45,000 — enough to cover not only Holden's hospital bills, but for Michelle and Jeremy's trip to Boston with their son.
Holden's third operation went more smoothly than the first two. He was released to stay in the hospital's hotel with his parents by the next day.“He had no swelling, no pain,”says Michelle.

Henrietta Swan Leavitt was born on July 4, 1869, in Massachusetts.Little is known about her private life.As a college student, she studied a number of subjects and fell in love with astronomy.
Leavitt never married and was considered a serious woman with little time to waste on unimportant aspects of life. Her co workers described her as pleasant and friendly, and much focused on the importance of the work she was doing. She began to lose her hearing as a young woman due to a condition that only worsened with time.
In 1893, she began working at Harvard College Observatory under the direction of astronomer E.C.Pickering.He directed a group of women, who were called “computers”.These “computers” conducted important astronomy research by studying photographic plates (照相底片) of the sky and cataloging (编目录) characteristics of stars. The women were not allowed to operate telescopes, which limited their ability to conduct their own research. They lived at a time when women's contributions were undervalued or ignored.
Henrietta Leavitt continued her research until just before her death, always thinking of herself as an astronomer, despite her start as a nameless “computer” in Pickering's department. While Leavitt was not officially recognized during her life for her work, Harlow Shapley, the astronomer who was the Harvard College Observatory director, did recognize her worth and made her head of Stellar Photometry in 1921.
At that time Leavitt was suffering from cancer, and she died at the same year. This prevented her from being recognized as a Nobel Prize owner for her contributions. After her death, her name was placed on a lunar crater (月球陨石坑), and asteroid (小行星) 5383 Leavitt carries her name.At least one book has been published about her and her name is usually mentioned as part of the history of astronomical contributions.

Albert Einstein was probably the most famous scientist of the twentieth century. He changed scientific thinking in the modern world. He is generally considered as the greatest physicist who ever lived. What's more, he devoted a lot of his time and energy to working for human rights and progress.
In 1933, while Einstein was visiting England and the United States, the Nazi government of Germany took all his things away, including his position and his citizenship.Einstein then settled down in the United States. In 1939, Einstein, who loved peace — afraid of a world in which only Hitler would have an atomic bomb — tried hard to persuade President Franklin D.Roosevelt in a famous letter to have the United States start uranium (铀) research. That Germany, after all, had no bomb, and that the first bomb would fall on Japan, could not have been expected. After the war, Einstein never stopped working for peace and reducing the number of soldiers in the world.
Although he wasn't connected with any accepted religion, Einstein felt that trust in a personal God was too special an idea to be suitable to the God at work in this universe, but he never believed that the universe was one of chance or disorder. The universe to him was one of pure (纯的) law and order. He once said, “God may know everything, but he is not hateful.”

Martha Graham, born in 1894, was one of the most famous dancers and creators of dance, whose influence on dance has been compared with the influence Picasso had on the modern visual arts, Stravinsky had on music, or Frank Lloyd Wright had on architecture. She created almost two hundred dance pieces. She is often called the Mother of Modern Dance.
Earlier in her life, however, Martha did not know that she would become a dancer. At that time, the dancers were looked down on.So Martha's parents didn't approve of her desire to dance at the beginning.Until 1916, she began her studies at the newly created Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, founded by Ruth St.Denis and Ted Shawn, where Graham worked very hard to improve her ability to dance because she was considered too old to begin dancing.
In 1936, Graham made her defining work, Chronicle, which signaled the beginning of a new era in modern dance. The dance brought serious issues to the stage for the general public in a dramatic manner.Influenced by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the Great Depression that followed, and the Spanish Civil War, it focused on depression and isolation, reflected in the dark nature of both the set and costumes.
Graham continued to dance past the age of seventy.Once again, she was met with criticism (批评) from people who came to watch her shows. But she didn't give up.Her last completed ballet was 1990's Maple Leaf Rag.A Dancer's World is an introduction to Graham and her work. She tells about her dances and her dance group shows some of their methods.
Martha Graham received many awards during her lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976.She was the first dancer to receive the country's highest civilian honor. She died in 1991 at the age of ninety six.In 1998, Time magazine listed her as the “Dancer of the Century” and as one of the most important people of the twentieth century.
