We all know that the world's greatest athletes earn high salaries (薪水). Shaquille O'Neal earned $27.7 million in one season playing with the Miami Heat. That's $337,804 for each regular season game. However, in the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association), the top players only earn about $79,500 for the entire season. There's always been a gap between men and women in sports.
Laila Ali, the daughter of the famous boxer Mohammed Ali, is someone helping women athletes get the appreciation they deserve. She became a boxing champion like her father. She has won fifteen of her eighteen victories by knockout (击倒) and gained a lot of attention for women's boxing. Boxing, of course, is not the only sport in which female athletes break through the gender barrier (性别障碍).
And one sport in which female athletes are currently respected is tennis, but this was not always the case. In the 1960s, Billie Jean King was the best female tennis player in the world, and she worked hard to improve conditions for women in tennis. For example, she wanted them to make as much money as men. She became the first female athlete to earn over $100,000 in prize money in a single year. Still, King was not respected by some men.
In 1973, male tennis player Bobby Riggs declared that women could not be equal to men. He challenged King in a tennis match to decide who was better. This “Battle of the Sexes” had the largest television audience ever for a tennis match. At the time, Riggs was fifty years old, and King was just thirty. King kept long volleys to make Riggs grow tired, and she defeated Riggs in three straight sets. She later said, “It helped a lot of people realize that everyone can have skills, whether you are a man or woman ... as well as helping men and women understand each other. ”
There will always be great female athletes. Through their accomplishments, maybe professional sports will someday be equal for both genders.

With the summer/winter vacation coming near, many kids will find ways to earn money. Babysitting, dog walking and running a lemonade stand (柠檬汁小摊位) are all popular jobs for kids. But did you know that the last one may be illegal
Recently, the state of Utah in America officially made it legal for kids to open lemonade stands or run the occasional business. You wouldn't think such a law would be necessary, but in most states, the harmless business pursuits (追求) of kids can get shut down. In 2011, Georgia police officers shut down a lemonade stand run by three little girls because they didn't have a business permit to sell food. Last year, two teens were threatened with fines from New Jersey officials because they hadn't got a permit before they went door to door offering to clean snow after a storm.
David Roland, co founder of the Freedom Center of Missouri, recently represented two girls in Missouri who were banned from selling cookies out of their driveway. According to David, media attention usually helps government officials see the light and let these kids get back to business. But one problem still remains: laws requiring permits and licenses that are aimed at adults are increasingly being used to shut kids down. Worse still, officials often receive complaints (投诉) from neighbors.
So what can kids do to stay on the right side of the law with business ventures (冒险) The best way is to call the local city or town office and ask if there are any regulations in place that would prevent kids from running a lemonade stand. That should give kids an idea about whether the local government is willing to work with kids to protect these occasional businesses.

In China, the “kingdom of bicycles”, people went everywhere by bicycle. However, now as a result of industrialization, from 1995 to 2005, the number of bikes declined by 35% in Chinese cities, while cars and other motor vehicles doubled. This has left air polluted and roads crowded. In China, pollutant levels have risen alongside urban population growth.
To deal with this issue, Chinese cities have invested (投资) increasingly in public transport systems like bike sharing.Bike sharing systems have grown extremely in China in the past decade. The first major models started in European cities Amsterdam and Copenhagen in 1968 and 1995 and offered a service through which city goers could easily borrow bikes to travel around the city.Since then, bike sharing systems have grown rapidly.
China now has the biggest and largest number of bike sharing programs. One of the largest programs is the Hangzhou Public Bicycle Service. The system is straightforward — pick up a bike from any station and you can ride for free in the first hour.Need another hour Pay 1 yuan for a second hour.Given its ease and cheapness, it's no surprise that an average of 310,000 people use the system every day.
However, the adoption of bike sharing wasn't easy at the beginning. After the 2008 Olympic Games, Beijing struggled in maintaining its bike sharing programs, as bike sharing companies suffered heavy financial (财政的) losses due to little government support and little demand.Shanghai similarly struggled in 2014, with citizens choosing to take taxis or to buy their own bikes. Then things started to look up.And now more bike sharing programs are developing quickly.
Regardless of how bike sharing systems change in China, it's evident that they've made their mark on China's transport systems, on the way to making the country return to the “kingdom of bicycles” and hopefully regain clean air.

I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do.Over the next six years, I_was_treading_water,_just trying to earn an income.I tried journalism, but I didn't think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher.I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.
I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep down wish to write a novel.Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words.
It takes confidence to make a new start — there's a dark period in between where you're neither one thing nor the other. You're out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you're too ashamed to say, “Well, I'm writing a novel, but I'm not quite sure if I'm going to get there.” My confidence dived.Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside.
Then I met an agent (代理商) who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback.I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel.
The next problem was finding a publisher. After two and a half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal — that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.
It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck — of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there's no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract (合同) of the publisher — to be a published writer — is unbelievably rewarding (有回报的).

A cycling session at Queen Mary homeless women's hostel (寄宿舍) in London starts.Eleven women discuss what they're hoping to achieve in today's session. Then they push their bikes to a basketball court to practise in an off road environment.Supported by instructors, they practise riding by themselves.Sometimes these women feel a little tired because they take medicine, but they have all made up their mind for cycling training.
Last year Queen Mary approached Sustrans (a charity) to set up a cycling club for women. Many of them have low levels of fitness. All have survived challenging situations ranging from social isolation (孤立) to abusive (虐待的) relationships. The hostel staff, who are experienced mental health experts, try to develop cycling to build the women's confidence and give them access to other fields of society. The hostel is moving away from traditional treatment of mental health with the belief that cycling could be a really useful tool in helping the women live on their own. After the success of a 10 week pilot project, the cycling club received financial support of £10,000 to continue the club.
In modern society, homelessness and mental health problems often go hand in hand.Studies have shown that physical activity, including walking and cycling, can be used to overcome and even prevent stress, depression and anxiety. It can be more effective than medical treatment.
Women, however, are less likely than men to take part in physical activity.Women in the UK make nearly three times fewer cycling journeys than men.Two main causes of this are traditional barriers — mostly because women still undertake most household tasks — and fear of judgment. The network of bike routes has been expanded yet the “build it and they will come” approach ignores the fact that not all people start from the same point.Social interventions (干预) are a useful way to achieve equality of access to cycling.
