As summer turns to fall and parents are buying children their new backpacks, it is time to think of how our schools work and whether they are inspiring true learning. The schools of today are largely those of our great grandparents. While white boards may have replaced blackboards and DVDs are used instead of projectors, schoolroom atmosphere is remarkably unchanged. Teachers deliver inert (无活力的) information to eager and empty minds who will soon lose what Ellen Galinsky described as the “fire_in_their_eyes”.
Our view of learning is trapped in the learning illusion (错误观念) that content is all that matters. Of course, content is important. Who would not want to have the multiplication tables memorized But content is constantly changing. Pluto No longer a planet. If memorization of content is everything, children's knowledge will be out of date. Classrooms at all levels need to emphasize “the six C's”: content, collaboration, communication, confidence (risk taking), critical thinking and creative innovation (创新).
Our approach to the economic threats we see on our borders is to push for 19th century memorization in a 21st century world. Yet the facts will be as close at the Google generation's fingertips. We need to teach our children how to learn, and how Sally and Pedro can together figure out how to use technology to understand why some trees never lose their leaves while others do. We need John and Qonick to argue about the best way to solve that math problem, rather than just listen to what the teacher tells them. Today's schools should be active places where kids are actually thinking together about problem solving.
None of this is to say that children cannot learn in school. They can. But children are often expected to sit still, listen and repeat disembodied content. The “keys to the kingdom” of the 21st century will go to those who love to learn and can transform their knowledge in innovative ways.

A.Scientists in the 19th century.
B.The students in the 21st century.

When a language you don't understand appears in your Facebook News Feed, you can touch a button and quickly translate it. Facebook offers a way of communicating not only with millions of people who speak your language, but with millions of others who speak something else.
A few days ago, the company's central artificial intelligence lab released a paper describing a new technology that could accelerate the evolution of machine translation not only inside Facebook but also across the Internet.
According to Facebook's tests, its technique does so far more efficiently than other methods, which can eventually lead to even sharper translations.
Facebook's approach relies on neural (神经的) networks and complex mathematical systems that can learn tasks by analyzing vast amounts of data. Last fall, Google presented a translation system driven entirely by neural networks that topped most models. Many other companies and researchers were pushing in the same direction, especially Microsoft and Chinese web giant Baidu.
But Facebook is taking a slightly different strategy from other big players. It's using what is called a convolutional neural network, a technique invented by the researcher Yann LeCun, who now directs Facebook's AI lab. Rather than analyze a sentence sequentially (连续地), one piece at a time, a convolutional neural network can analyze many different pieces at once, before organizing those pieces into a logical hierarchy (层次).
Even if the system is slightly more accurate than other systems like the one Google rolled out in the fall, the company says its technique is more efficient than other neural network based methods.
Others may help push the technique forward as well. Facebook is not only publishing the paper describing its new system but also presenting the software engine in public that drives the system. Facebook even freely shares the code with the world at large. It means that translation will develop far more quickly across the Internet — not just on Facebook.
8.What can we learn about the new technology from the text
A.It is an app used only on Facebook.
B.It can translate all the languages in the world.
C.It can help you know about others successfully.
D.It is the best method in the translation field so far.
9.What can we infer from Paragraph 4
A.The development of translation system is very competitive.
B.Neural networks play a minor part in the translation system.
C.Many companies contribute to Facebook's new technology.
D.Some companies are working together on the translation technology.
10.What makes Facebook differ from other big players according to Paragraph 5
A.Its technology is entirely based on neural networks.
B.Its technology can analyze the whole sentence at the same time.
C.It is the first company to use the translation technology in this field.
D.It is the biggest company that owns this technology all over the world.
11.What character can we infer about Facebook from the last paragraph
A.Very honest. B.Very aggressive.
C.Not conservative. D.Not self protective.

Many leading AI researchers think that in a matter of decades, artificial intelligence will be able to do not merely some of our jobs, but all of our jobs, forever transforming life on Earth.
The reason why many reject this as science fiction is that we've traditionally thought of intelligence as something mysterious that can only exist in biological organisms, especially humans. But such an idea is unscientific.
From my point of view as a physicist and AI researcher, intelligence is simply a certain kind of information processing performed by elementary particles (基本粒子) moving around, and there is no law of physics that says one can't build machines more intelligent than us in all ways. This suggests that we've only seen the tip of the intelligence iceberg and that there is an amazing potential to unlock the full intelligence that is potential in nature and use it to help humanity.
If we get it right, the upside is huge. Since everything we love about civilization is the product of intelligence, amplifying (扩大) our own intelligence with AI has the potential to solve tomorrow's toughest problems. For example, why risk our loved ones dying in traffic accidents that self driving cars could prevent or dying of cancers that AI might help us find cures for Why not increase productivity through automation and use AI to accelerate our research and development of affordable sustainable (可持续的) energy
I'm optimistic that we can develop rapidly with advanced AI as long as we win the race between the growing power of our technology and the knowledge with which we manage it.But this requires giving up our outdated concept of learning from mistakes. That helped us win the race with less powerful technology: We messed up with fire and then invented fire extinguishers (灭火器), and we messed up with cars and then invented seat belts. However, it's an awful idea for more powerful technologies, such as nuclear weapons or superintelligent AI — where even a single mistake is unacceptable and we need to get things right the first time.
2.How do many people feel about leading AI researchers' predictions
A.Worried. B.Curious.
C.Doubtful. D.Disappointed.
13.What does the author think of intelligence
A.We know little about it.
B.It belongs to human beings.
C.It is too difficult to understand.
D.We have a good command of it.
14.What does the underlined word “upside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Cost. B.Potential.
C.Quantity. D.Advantage.
15.What's important for us in the race between people and technology
A.Learning from failure.
B.Increasing our intelligence.
C.Avoiding making mistakes.
D.Making accurate predictions.

Here's my own list of positive reasons to homeschool.
__16__
Most of the homeschooled kids I know have their own particular passions and areas that they can discuss like an expert. Very few of these areas — modern art, Legos and analyzing horror films — are the kind of things students learn about in school. I know from my own school experience that having an offbeat (不寻常的) interest doesn't win you points from teachers and other students. __17__
It teaches kids how to interact with adults.
__18__ It didn't help that the only adults I saw all day were always looking down on me and telling me what to do. When homeschoolers interact with adults in the community, they learn how civil people treat each other in public. It's a kind of socialization most school kids don't experience until they're ready to go out into the world.
It also brings parents and kids closer together.
When I was looking into homeschooling for the first time, one of the greatest selling points was heard from parents of the homeschooled students that their teens never felt the need to push them away. __19__ In fact, homeschooled teens are often more ready for adult life than their traditionally schooled peers.
It adapts to the family's schedule.
No getting up before dawn to take the school bus. No worrying about whether to take a family trip because it means missing classes. __20__ And it gives them the freedom to do the important things in their lives, on their own schedule.
A.Sure, they develop independence.
B.It lets kids show their enthusiasm.
C.Kids can do what they want to do at home.
D.As a kid, I was really shy around grown ups.
E.It is wrong for them to be late for school every day.
F.Homeschooling allows families to learn anywhere, even on the road.
G.But among homeschoolers, it's what makes your friends so interesting.

You've seen it in movies: A girl walks through a parking garage. Suddenly, an evil looking man jumps out. The girl jabs (猛戳) him in the eyes with her keys — or maybe she kicks him in __41__ certain sensitive place. Then she leaps into her car and speeds to safety.
Here's the real life: When the girl goes to jab or kick the man, he knows what's coming and grasps her arm or leg, __42__ (pull) her off balance. Now she's in a bad place to defend __43__ (she), and she can't run away.
Many people think of self defense __44__ a kick to the stomach or jab in the eyes of an attacker. But self defense __45__ (actual) means doing everything possible to avoid fighting someone who threatens or attacks you. It is all about using your brains — not your fists.
People __46__ fight back in self defense can make a situation much __47__ (bad). The attacker may become even more violent. The best way is to try to get away. Usually, your intuition (直觉), __48__(combine) with your common sense, can help get you out of trouble. For example, if you're running alone on the school track and you suddenly feel like you __49__ (watch), that could be your intuition telling you something. Your common sense would then tell you that it's a good idea __50__ (get) back to where there are more people around.

Dear Tom,
How are you doing I'm glad to tell you that I have received an offer from Oxford University. But my parents don't agree with my studying abroad. They are afraid that I won't adapt myself well to the life there.
Now I badly need some advice on how to adjust myself to the life there. Please tell me some local customs and living habits. What's more, I know that studying abroad will cost a lot. I want to find a part time job. On one hand, I can earn some money to support myself. On the other hand, I can learn how to get along with people there and gain some working experience. I wonder whether I can get one easily.
I would appreciate it if you could write me soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
