Glen Nevis is known as the “outdoor capital” of Scotland. Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, rises above the area, while the waters of the River Nevis flow through the rocky valley below. The wonderful scenery attracts walkers and climbers all through the seasons, though it's cold in winter.
During the summer months, one of the most exciting activities is the yearly Glen Nevis River Race, in which competitors race for three kilometres along the river, but not in a boat. Instead, each competitor uses a lilo, a plastic bed filled with air normally used for camping or floating in the sea, to race along the river. There are rocks, waterfalls and sections with scary names like Dead Dog Pool and the Leg Breaker for them to get through.
Competitors set off at 30 second intervals (间隔) by jumping with their lilos from a tiny shelf on a rock into the fast flowing water 12 metres below. It can take anything from 20 minutes to over two hours to complete the course, depending on the level of the river and the abilities of the competitor.
The only rules are that competitors must be at least 16 years old, and should provide their own crash helmet (防撞头盔), a rubber wet suit and a life jacket. Gloves and old trainers are suggested to protect against knocks. The most important qualification (资格), however, is a sense of fun.
The race is full of exciting moments, and the greatest of these is at the Lower Falls Leap, where terrified competitors have to jump over a ten metre waterfall not far from the finish. More than 3,000 athletes have taken part in the race during its 30 year history. Their £30 entry fee helps to raise money for the mountain rescue team, whose members provide an essential service in the region for free.
The prizes may not be fantastic, but everyone receives a certificate (证书) of completion and the winner gets the title River Race Champion and all who take part agree that it is worth it for the satisfying feeling of reaching the end safely.

It resembled another aircraft at first sight. The pilot told his young passengers that it was built in 1964 by the Boeing Company. But appearances were misleading, and the 13 students from Europe and the USA who boarded the aircraft were in for the flight of their lives. Inside, the area that normally had seats had become a long white tunnel (隧道). Heavily padded (用软物垫) from floor to ceiling, it looked a bit strange. Most of the seats had been taken out, apart from a few at the back, where the young scientists quickly took their places.
For 12 months, science students from across the continents had competed to win a place on the flight at the invitation of the European Space Agency. The challenge had been to suggest imaginative experiments to be conducted in weightless conditions. For the next two hours the Boeing's flight would be shooting upwards towards the heavens before moving towards Earth. The intention was to achieve weightlessness for a few seconds.
The aircraft took off smoothly enough, but any feelings that I and the young scientists had that we were on anything like a scheduled passenger service quickly disappeared when the pilot put the plane into a 45 degree climb which lasted around 20 seconds. Then the engines cut out and we became weightless. Everything became confused, and left or right, up or down no longer had any meaning. After ten seconds of free fall descent (降落), the pilot pulled the aircraft out of its nosedive (俯冲).
Each time the pilot cut the engines and we became weightless, a new team conducted its experiment. First it was the Dutch, who wanted to discover why cats always land on their feet. Then it was the German team, who conducted a successful experiment on a traditional building method to see if it could be used for building a future space station. The Americans had an idea to create solar sails that could be used by satellites.
After two hours of going up and down in the plane doing experiments, most of the students thought it was an unforgettable experience and one they would be keen to repeat.
28.What do we know about the plane
A.It had no seats.
B.It was produced in the USA.
C.It was painted white from the inside.
D.It looked like a normal plane from the outside.
29.Who might be the author
A.A student. B.A pilot.
C.A teacher. D.A journalist.
30.What were the plane's movements during the flight
A.Several quick climbs and sudden engine stops.
B.Quite a number of slow takeoffs and dives.
C.A lot of flying in circles.
D.Non stop free falls.
31.Why was the plane made weightless
A.To let passengers feel the conditions of space.
B.To allow the young scientists to try out their ideas.
C.To prepare the young scientists for future work in space.
D.To teach passengers skills needed to survive a plane crash.

Many cities and towns have laws that require people to recycle paper and plastics. Now some state and local governments have passed laws that require citizens to recycle their food waste as well. California and Vermont have statewide laws about recycling food waste that apply to businesses and homes. The process of recycling food waste and turning it into usable soil is called composting (堆制肥料).
Food waste that can be composted includes fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, tea bags, and eggshells. Garden waste such as stems and leaves can also be composted. Meat, fish, and dairy food waste cannot be recycled.
According to environmental groups, composting reduces the amount of trash going into landfills (垃圾填埋地), and composted waste holds a wide range of nutrients. When compost is added to the soil in gardens and fields, it helps crops grow.
Reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfills is one reason why cities and states are passing food waste recycling laws.“Our landfills are far from enough for the creation of new ones is shrinking.” Renee Crowley, a project manager at the Lower East Side Ecology Center in New York City, told TFK.
Officials in Seattle, Washington, say that food waste makes up 30% of the trash going into landfills, and they are looking to reduce that percentage. That city has a law requiring people to recycle food waste. It is banned (禁止) from all garbage. There is a fine for people who put it into regular garbage.
Crowley points out that even in cities where food recycling is not a law, there are often places where citizens can drop off their food waste for composting. Many schools and colleges have also started composting programs.
Those who are against food recycling laws say that the composting process is costly. In addition, it can be difficult for people who live in apartments to store their waste because they don't have access to outside storage bins. Patti Ferguson from Orange County, California, told her local newspaper that she thought an indoor container containing food waste would get smelly.
32.What do we know about composting from the text
A.Not all food waste can be reused.
B.It is cheap to compost food waste.
C.Not all soil can be composted.
D.It is usually processed in empty landfills.
33.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A.Ways of keeping nutrients in the soil.
B.Ways of reducing the amount of trash.
C.Examples of different useful nutrients.
D.Benefits of recycling food waste.
34.In Seattle, throwing food waste into garbage is ________.
A.acceptable B.shameful
C.required D.illegal

A.thankful B.negative
C.uncaring D.supportive

(Text 3)
W:Have you seen the news on TV that there's been serious flooding in the South
M:Yes, I have. My friends and I have got to cancel our travel plans.
W:What a pity! I know you've been looking forward to it for months.
(Text 4)
W:Are you ready to place your order
M:I haven't decided yet. Can you give me some advice
W:Sure! Our special today is the fried fish with rice.
M:The fish sounds nice. Can I get that with a side salad
(Text 5)
W:Is the River Thames still polluted
M:It certainly used to be. I remember it used to smell awful, and if you fell in, you had to be taken to hospital.
W:That sounds terrible!
M:But in the 1960s, they cleaned it up, and in fact it's now one of the cleanest city rivers in the UK.
(Text 6)
W:Hello, Jack! It's Emily.
M:Hi, Emily! How has your dress designing been going in London
W:Pretty good. And how was your football game in Paris

(Text 8)
M:Do you realize what time it is I've already finished a whole movie.
W:I'm sorry; I didn't realize that it was so late. We were enjoying ourselves at the party and ... and I forgot the time.
M:Do you honestly believe that is a good excuse
W:Not really. I'm telling the truth. I think most of my friends got home late tonight.
M:Haven't I asked you to call if you're going to be home late
W:Yeah, you did. I just forgot to call.
M:That's beside the point. You still should have called.

W:Welcome to England, and I hope your visit here will be a pleasant one. I'd like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.
M:Thanks.
W:UK drinking law forbids people under the age of 18 from buying alcohol, as well as friends from buying it for them.
M:Ah, yes. It's the same in our country. What about smoking
W:It is against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you're under 16.
M:That's a good law. Most countries have many teens that smoke.
W:Yes, it has actually become a serious social problem for us here. Okay, the biggest thing you'll need to watch out for is our traffic, as it's quite different from that in other countries. You should be careful when crossing the road, as the traffic moves on the left side of the road here. Always use the crossing for walking.
M:Yes, it's really unique!
W:And don't take any chances when crossing the road. I think the last thing you should be aware of is littering. It is against the law to throw away rubbish on the streets or in other public places. Whenever you have something to throw away, just put it in one of the litter bins along the road, or just put it in your pocket and throw it away at home.
M:Thanks so much for telling me all this.
(Text 10)
Hello, everyone. Today, I'm going to share with you a little about the kinds of foods that English people eat.
A traditional English breakfast consists of eggs, fried bread, mushrooms, bacon, tomatoes and baked beans, but most English people today prefer a breakfast of hot or cold grain, juice, and a warm drink of either tea or coffee.
The English lunch is normally eaten between 12:00 noon and 1:30 pm, and most often consists of a sandwich. Along with the sandwich, an English person might have a bag of potato chips, fruit or biscuits. A glass of beer might also be added to lunch if the person eats in one of the many pubs; otherwise, a tea or coffee. Fish and chips, often wrapped in a piece of paper, are still a favorite among English diners.
The afternoon tea is simply a time to snack on a bag of potato chips or a few biscuits, and drink a quick cup of tea or coffee. Tiny cakes and sweets are often eaten as well. Tea is also an old fashioned term for dinner; some English people still say “tea” when they mean the last main meal of the day.
