Once upon a time, a very strong woodcutter asked for a job from a timber (木材) merchant, and he got it. The pay was really good and so were the working conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best.
His boss gave him an axe (斧) and showed him the area where he was to work. On the first day, the woodcutter cut down 18 trees. “Congratulations,” the boss said. “Go on that way!”
Encouraged by the boss' words, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he only could cut down 15 trees. The third day he tried even harder, but he only could cut down 10 trees. Day after day, he was cutting fewer and fewer trees.
“I must be losing my strength,” the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on. “When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” the boss asked. “Sharpen I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut down trees.”
We sometimes get so busy that we don't take time to sharpen the “axe”. In today's world, it seems that everyone is busier than ever, but less happy than ever. Why is that Can it be that we have forgotten how to stay “sharp”? There's nothing wrong with hard work. But we should not get so busy that we neglect the truly important things in life such as having time for a coffee with our family or taking time to read a book.
We all need time to relax, think, learn and grow. If we don't take time to sharpen the “axe”, we will become dull and lose our effectiveness. So start from today, think about the way in which you can do your job more effectively and add a lot of value to it.

Homeless men were among the unsung heroes in the aftermath (余波) of the explosion at the end of Ariana Grande's concert Manchester Arena, which resulted in the deaths of 22 people and injured 59 others.
Stephen Jones, aged 35, was sleeping near Manchester Arena on Monday night when he heard the explosion. He ran to the arena, where he saw a lot of children with blood all over them crying and screaming. “Although I'm homeless, it doesn't mean I don't get a heart,” Stephen told ITV News. “They need my help. I'd like to think that they will come and help me if I need their help. It's just instinct (本能) to go.”
Chris Parker, another homeless man, who stayed in the area around Manchester Arena was knocked down by the explosion. He was still able to help victims get out of the building, including a girl who lost her legs in the explosion. Chris explained how a woman, who was in her 60s, died in his arms after the explosion. “She passed away in my arms. She said she could stay with her family,” he recalled. “I haven't stopped crying. The most shocking part of it is that it was a concert for children.”
As the world recovers from the shock of the attack, Ariana Grande has returned to Florida to be with her family. The 22 year old British Muslim named Salman Ramadan Abedi, who caused the explosion, died at the scene. Since then, people have taken to Twitter to praise the two homeless men who put their lives in the face of danger to help others, and crowd funding (群众募资) pages have been set up to help get Stephen and Chris off the streets. Long before selfies became popular, Boston College professor Karl Baden took a simple black and white photo of himself. He repeated it every day for the next three decades. Baden's “Every Day” project officially turns 30, and he says he has no intention of stopping.
He recognizes the selfie craze (狂热) has helped his project get more attention from the public, which has been exhibited in art galleries in Boston, New York City and elsewhere over the years. “If it wasn't for the selfie craze, I'd probably be doing it anonymously (匿名地) as usual,” Baden joked.
“What makes the project work is that it reflects a number of universal themes,” said Howard Yezerski, a Boston gallery owner who has exhibited the project twice. “It's both personal and universal at the same time,” he said. “He's recording a life, or at least one aspect of it that we can all understand.”
Baden, 64, quietly started his project on Feb. 23, 1987, nearly two decades before Facebook appeared. He tries to remain faithful to that first image, posing with the same facial expression and using the same 35mm camera, backdrop (背景幕) and lighting. “The act itself is like brushing your teeth,” he said. “I'll just take the picture and get on with the rest of my day.” Baden has taken other pains to keep the same style. He has consciously not grown a beard, and his hair remains unchanged.
Baden's appearance doesn't have big changes in 11,000 photos. But in 2001, Baden suffered from a disease and became noticeably thinner. The disease now is less severe and, as later pictures show, Baden quickly recovers. The only lasting change from that time has been his eyebrows; they never quite grew back.

There are many benefits of organized tours over independent trips. Traveling on a rugby tour is a good try for anyone. It is possible to travel with a group of like minded individuals and develop friendships that may last a lifetime. Traveling with a group of rugby fans also adds to the atmosphere and builds up to big matches. Tours allow rugby fans easy access to some of the best stadiums in the world.
Organized tours allow anyone access to exciting events that wouldn't otherwise be accessed when traveling independently. When on a tour with a travel company such as Gullivers Travel for the upcoming (即将到来的) British and Irish Lions Tour 2018, guests are treated to events such as Welcome Party, GolfDay, Fishing Trip and Sydney Pub Crawl, all joined by internationally renowned names in rugby such as Colin Charvis, Dafydd James and David Wallace. Organized tours arrange all details of the trip so you only have to worry about turning up. Unlike “gap year” travelers, those on a sports tour will be treated to the best hotels in the area, traveling on convenient scheduled flights and going on tours organized by local tour managers with knowledge of the local area. Airport transfers (转移) and travel inside the country are all organized by the tour, meaning guests are able to spend more time seeing the sights of the country they are visiting and less time searching for taxis, waiting for buses and other time consuming tasks. Match tickets are also guaranteed.
There are many fantastic rugby tours coming up in locations throughout the world. The British and Irish Lions Tour 2018 is one of the upcoming tours. The tour features 10 matches, one in Hong Kong and the rest scattered (分散) throughout some of the best destinations in Australia including Sydney, Blue Mountains, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. This allows those on a tour to see many locations throughout Australia, something that won't be possible on an independently organized trip.

Ⅴ.阅读理解
During Atlanta police officer Che Milton's first week with the department, he took a call for a robbery. But he wasn't about to send the suspect to jail (监狱).
The robbery attempt was from a 12 year old girl, and all she'd tried to steal was a $2 pair of shoes from a store. The girl broke down crying and she explained her family couldn't afford new shoes. As the oldest of five children, she's hoped to surprise her five year old sister with a new pair.
Instead of punishing the girl, Milton, who was curious about her living situation, offered to bring her home. Inside the house in a rough neighborhood, the officer's heart sank. There weren't enough beds for all five children, and sheets were lying on the floor. A single sofa was the only piece of furniture, and the kitchen was practically empty of food. The girl's mother, Mrs. Staple, explained that her husband traveled for work a lot but didn't make much money, and that she needed to stay home with the kids instead of getting another job because they couldn't afford daycare.
Eager to do what he could to support the family, Milton bought them four large pizzas. He also called the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services in the hope of connecting them with a social worker. Within the next few months, he went back many times with clothing and baby items.
Inspired by Milton's story, the police department shared his tale of generosity on Facebook. The post didn't ask for donations, but followers kept commenting to ask how they could send items to the Staple family.
To make sure the family received items they could use, the police department followed up with another post sharing the children's and mother's clothing sizes. It also called for blanket and furniture donations and offered to let donors drop items off at a police station. Visit the post to learn how you can help, and find more useful ways to donate your old things.

When Shakespeare was twenty one, he went to London to try his fortune in that great city, and a very interesting place was the London of his day.
There was the famous London Bridge and St.Paul's Cathedral, and palaces and markets and long streets full of shops.
Then, too, there were the daily crowds where could be seen people from all over the world. Knights, scholars and the highwayman (拦路强盗) or thief, who had been infamous for his clever robberies, passed by each other.
Here, also, were noblemen dressed in gold, from Italy and Spain and France; slaves from Spanish, America, sea captains and ministers, soldiers and servants — all held by chance or interest within the gray walls which circled London, and whose gates gave welcome to as strange a crowd as could be found in the world.
Into this curious crowd came Shakespeare, quick to see and eager to learn. And before long all these strange sights were as familiar to him as the faces of his own town's residents. Each one told its story to him so plainly that, as before he had learned the secrets of the fields and woods, so now he learned men and men's interests that make up the great world.
And he learned these lessons so well that when he came to write his plays, he made such use of them as no writer ever made before or since; for it is the use of this knowledge of the world, combined with his own genius, that makes Shakespeare the greatest dramatist that has ever lived.

A Great Loss — Shirley Temple Dies at 85
February 12, 2014
BY DERRIK J.LANG, Associated Press
Shirley Temple Black, who died on February 10th at age 85, wasn't just a child star. She was THE child star — the sweet little girl whose shining smile helped illumine some of the darkest days the US has known during the Great Depression.
It's hard today to imagine the super star Shirley was once “America's Little Darling”.She sang and danced her way to the top of the box office in such films as Bright Eyes, Curly Top and Heidi.By 1940, she had appeared in 43 films.Temple teamed with Bill Robison in four movies, and their dance on the stairs in The Little Colonel is still a legendary film moment.
In the 1930s, her name on a movie introduction assured (保证) a packed house. She inspired dolls, dresses, dishes — even a drink (alcohol free, of course).
US President Franklin D.Roosevelt once famously said that “as long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will be all right”.
Unlike so many of today's child stars, Temple didn't end up with her name appearing across the headlines for bad behaviors.Instead of getting her photos on front pages or struggling with drugs and alcohol, Temple went on to a second career in diplomacy (外交),including presidential appointments as ambassador to Ghana.
She surprised a lot of people who doubted her with her grace, knowledge and eagerness to serve. In fact, her career in public service (20 years) was longer than her career in movies (19 years). The role she valued most, however, was as wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
The world has lost a treasured Hollywood legend. But her movies will allow that little dynamic figure to continue charming audiences for a very long time.

German artist HA Schult is an unusual artist who uses trash (废物) to make sculptures.“We are living in the time of garbage,” says Schult.“I created a thousand sculptures of garbage. They are a mirror of ourselves.” Here, Schult was talking about his 1,000 trash sculptures in the form of humans. He first exhibited them in 1996 in the western German state of North Rhine Westphalia.
“They are social sculptures,” he explains.“They are not only sculptures for the eyes. They are sculptures to spread the idea that we live in a time of garbage.” So far, Schult's social sculptures have been on show in Paris, in Moscow's Red Square, on the Great Wall of China, and in the desert next to the Pyramids of Giza near Cairo.
HA Schult's work is unforgettable.Although his work has had a big influence on the art world, Schult remains modest about his creations: “Artists have to learn every time.We are not important. All that counts is the time in which we are living.”
Trash art has been around for years. But it seems that only the popular artists are regarded as true artists when working with trash. Why can't common people be considered artists when they use the same things and change them into some form of personal art Maybe it's because we all have our own preset ideas of what art is and isn't, or whom artists are or should be.
You can be an artist like Schult if you try.Look at used metal cans. What might be done with them Imagine them in any number of new uses, or imagine them simply as an art form. What about boxes or clothing Boxes can usually serve as new storage containers and houses for pets. And clothing?Imagine taking old clothes and turning them into hats or hanging organizers.
