Muddy flood water was pouring into the car and rising quickly.Jane knew they had to get out quickly before the water rose too high in the car.Forcing the door open, Charlie jumped into the flood from the back row.Meanwhile, Jane grabbed the front door handle and tried to open it but in vain."Try it again!" her husband shouted anxiously.
Hearing that, Jane took hold of the handle, using all her strength, and was able to pull the door open. She came out of the vehicle and finally reached Charlie, coughing and shaking. They leaned tightly against the back of the Car and screamed for help.

It was freezing cold outside. The biting wind was blowing hard. Rosalee pressed her nose against the window. Then she made a wish. “Ready, set—snow,” she whispered. She looked at the sky, but there was no snow. Rosalee closed her eyes again. “Ready, set—SNOW!” she said louder. She stole a quick glance with one eye open. “Not one flake(小薄片)”.
“Be patient, dear. It will snow soon,” said Rosalee’s grandmother Nana. She was setting a plate of warm pizzelle (芝麻脆饼) on the table. Rosalee loved her grandmother’s cookies. Their fancy shapes looked like snowflakes.
“But Grandpa told me it was supposed to snow today,” Rosalee said. It would be the first snow this winter. She had been filled with expectations.
Rosalee’s brother, Marcus, was sitting at the kitchen table. “Today can mean any time between now and midnight,” he pointed out.
Rosalee seemed a little confused. All the signs of snow were there: It looked like it could snow—The sky matched the grey rooftop next door; It felt like snowy weather—When she walked across the yard to check the mailbox that morning, she’d had to wear her hat and gloves and bury her face in a scarf, which made her look like a moving ball at a distance; It even smelled like it could snow—Nana always made pizzelle in a snowy weather.
The cookies cooled on the table, filling the kitchen with their sweet smell, making her mouth water. Nana smiled at Rosalee and handed her a cookie. Rosalee took a bite. Suddenly, an idea struck her. “I know how to make it now,” she said excitedly, jumping off her seat.
“Impossible,” Marcus mumbled(嘟哝), his mouth full.
“You’ll see!” Rosalee disappeared into her room.
An hour later, Rosalee called to her brother, who was in his room reading. “Come into the kitchen with your eyes closed, Marcus.”
“All right.” Marcus appeared in the doorway. His eyelids were closed.

This past summer, my family went on our annual vacation in a cottage on a lake. There were various activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and building sand castle on the beach. In the evenings, we gathered on the beach, having great fun.
However, by the third day of our vacation, I noticed my sister, Jane, spent most of her time watching videos and looking through online shops indoors. She was so addicted to her cellphone! Over dinner, I told Jane we would hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning. I stared at her, “Put your phone away and enjoy the scenery. It’s really amazing.”
“Well,” Jane shrugged her shoulders and answered unwillingly, “there are some bargains tomorrow in several online shops, so I’ll not be available.”
“Come out to enjoy the fresh air and many views. Hiking is fun!”
“Sounds more like punishment than a vacation,” she didn’t look up from her soup and mumbled (嘟囔), “I can’t walk that far.”
When I said it only took half an hour of steady walking to climb to the top, she nodded, “OK, I’ll go.”
The next morning was perfect for a hike, with sunny clear skies and gentle winds. I got up early and packed some sandwiches and bottles of water into my backpack along with the camera. Jane came slowly downstairs, and announced in a very unenthusiastic voice, “I’m ready to go, Jim.”
Anyway, we stepped out of our cottage and quite a different view unfolded before our eyes. Against the blue skies, a rough path wound to the top of the mountain across the lake with wild flowers and grass on both sides. The sunlight brightened on the glassy surface of the lake. We began from the path. “I’m still wondering if this is a good idea, but if you could do it, I could also do.” She complained, frowning.

Gemma jumped off the school bus feeling thoroughly miserable. Today had been one of the worst days of her life. How could she show her face at school ever again It was a total shame. She would no face her classmates at all next Monday morning
Gemma walked slowly up the tree-lined hill toward the park. She needed time alone to think and cry. Her mom wouldn't be home from work for another hour or so and she needed fresh air and sunlight after being in school all day She needed so much more than that, what she needed was a brain transplant. Reading out loud in class today had been terrifying, annoying, embarrassing; she hated every moment of it. She was sweating, her voice shook, her face flushed red, and her heart pounded uncontrollably. Breathing normally was simply impossible in the fear and panic she felt Gemma wished the ground had opened up and swallowed her whole which would have been preferable. She stood before the class feeling like a fool. She had heard the whispered comments between her classmates, and had seen the look on her English teacher's face as she went back to her seat.
Gemma headed for the bench in the walled rose garden that she often visited, as far away from people as possible. She took off her heavy backpack and put it down heavily on the hard seat. The backpack was full of school books and she was glad to get it off her shoulders. She never wanted to go back to school. She sighed deeply, buried her face in her hands, and began to sob in despair. She was sure other kids didn't have this problem. Some of her classmates even looked like they were enjoying reading out loud and took great delight in being the center of attention. Gemma didn't know what she was going to do.
“Hello, are you alright, dear "Startled(惊吓), Gemma abruptly pulled her hands away from her face and looked up in the direction of the voice, embarrassed that someone had seen her crying.

One day, when I was a freshman in high schoo1. I saw a kid from my class walking home from schoo1. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday He must be silly. ”I had quite a weekend planned, so I shook my head and went on.
As I was walking, I saw a group of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.
My heart went out to him. So. I ran to him. As he was looking for his glasses, I saw tears in his eyes. I handed him his glasses. He looked at me and said, “Thanks!”There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratefulness. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. It turned out he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before coming to this schoo1.
We talked all the way home. and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. The more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. Monday morning came, and Kyle carried all his books again. I stopped him and helped him carry half the books. The water was still rising. By this time, the swelling water had reached the chest of Charlie and Jane, who shivered uncontrollably and could not tell whether they trembled because of cold or fright. Fortunately, they spotted the flashing headlights of Joe's truck and caught a glimpse of his stout figure shape approaching them with a long rope. A strong torrent, coupled with the showering rain, washed over Joe and nearly swallowed him. However, this determined man rose to the flood and forged ahead, painfully and laboriously.
Joe finally reached the couple. 'Catching the rope.' he yelled at the top of his lungs. Having received Joe's message, Charlie and Jane twisted their figures and clutched the rope tightly. Together, three of them swam against the torrent along the rope and finally made it to the bank. As Joe hauled the couple from the flood, the breathless Jane was too moved to utter a single word. Only Charlie held Joe's hands tightly and sputtered with a choking tone, "Thank... you..., you... kind stranger, without... your help, Jane and I would have been... drowned to death." Joe shrugged off and said anyone at his place would have done the same thing. Indeed, what a narrow escape they had and what a good Samaritan Joe is!

“OK. Ready, set—SNOW!” Rosalee said. Marcus opened his eyes and looked around the kitchen. Tapped to the window were snowflakes of all shapes and sizes. More snowflakes hung from above, high and low, dancing on pieces of threads. Obviously amazed by what was before his eyes, Marcus was full of praise for her work. “That’s terrific, Rosalee.” Eyes shining with pure delight and pride, Rosalee took Marcus’ hand, inviting him to have a closer look. “But it is not real!” Marcus followed her and whispered.
“Look!” Rosalee pointed out the window and cried in great excitement. Snow floated softly through the tree branches outside, adding a touch of light to the yard in the gloomy day. The snowflakes were so big that Rosalee could see their delicate designs as they landed on the window ledge. “Wow, Rosalee! You really make it snow!” Marcus said excitedly. Soon the land was all white, like a beautiful blanket, and the tress were covered with white quilts. Rosalee and Marcus could hardly wait to go to the yard and play in the snow.

She followed me, her mind wandering. Minutes later, we started to climb a steep slope. Jane sighed, dragging her legs behind me. I was surprised to find some rarely-seen trees and flowers, and took many photos but Jane showed no interest. She stopped and sat on a rock, thirsty, sweaty and bored. I handed her a bottle of water and we took a break. “I missed my phone.” she complained as we continued climbing. Though unhappy, she just climbed along with me.
Reaching the top, Jane widened her eyes, shouting, “How wonderful!” She looked around dreamily, her eyes twinkling with wild excitement. A refreshing breeze brushed the mountain top, miles of trees spread out below us and birds chirped between branches. We sat on a large rock and ate sandwiches, enjoying the sounds, the smells and the sunlight. “Anyone still wants her phone ” I joked. She rolled her eyes, laughing out loud. The next morning, Jane danced to my room, crying, “Let’s hike around the lake today.” Sure, get our backpack then, I beamed, relieved and joyful.

Paragraph 1:
Unexpectedly, her English teacher came up and watched her with kindness and concern. Sitting down on the bench, next to Gemma, the teacher patted her shoulder gently, saying, “I know you were just too nervous, but it’s okay. Actually, most of us, like you, once experienced reading setbacks in public. As a saying goes, practice makes perfect. With more practice, you’re sure to make it next time, aren’t you ” Her English teacher had a long heart-to-heart talk with Gemma. Realizing her lack of practice, Gemma felt a sudden sense of relief. She was aware of what to do then. When they walked out of the rose park hand in hand, Gemma felt like a wholly different figure.
Paragraph 2:
Gemma walked home feeling like she was walking a little taller and there was a spring in her steps. Today, what her teacher said made her think a lot. She had already got a detailed plan on what to do next. Now she began to practise reading out loud at mirror in her room time and again. “What are you doing, Gemma ” her mother’s anxious voice came from the door. Gemma told Mum what had happened. Her mum gave Gemma a big thump-up and encouraged her to overcome the difficulty bravely. Later, Gemma read out loud with great confidence in front of her mother. Mum went up to Gemma and gave her a big happy hug. Things turned out well at last.

When graduation day arrived, I saw Kyle and found he was a little nervous. I went over to hug him and said, “Hey, big guy, you’ll be great!” He smiled and thanked me. Then he took his place and started his speech, in which he thanked his parents, teachers, his classmates... especially his friends who helped him go through those tough years. “A good friend can make a difference to you, ” he added. To my surprise, he told the story of the first day we met.
Kyle said he had planned to quit school that day before he saw me. He thought he performed poorly in school and let his parents down. For a long time he had been suffering depression. He ended up considering leaving school. That was why I saw him carrying his stuff home that day. “Thankfully, my friend offered me a hand and that changed my mind.” Hearing his words, I felt warmth fill me. Only then did I realize with one small action you can make a difference and change a person’s life.
