Mai Lin wasn’t doing well enough at school, or at least she wasn’t satisfied with herself. She wished she could do better.
“Let’s review the material we learned in the last unit,” the history teacher said. “Who can tell us what caused the War of 1812 ” Mai Lin sat at her desk, staring ahead. She hoped the teacher wouldn’t call her name. They hadn’t studied the War of 1812 at her old school and she didn’t know the answer.
“Alison ” the teacher asked instead. Oh, perfect, Mai Lin thought. Of course Alison would have the answer. She seemed to have all the answers. Alison was the most popular girl in school – always surrounded by millions of boyfriends, best friends, and others. She was like a brilliant sun.
Mai Lin hadn’t made one or two friends of her own so far. Her old school was small and low-key, but a shy person like Mai Lin had a chance there. This new school, however, seemed as big as an airport to Mai Lin, and it seemed very hard to get around in it. She still got lost sometimes in the school.
Mai Lin frowned (皱眉) as Alison answered the teacher’s question. Alison probably never got lost, Mai Lin thought to herself. You could probably put Alison down in the middle of a desert, and within five minutes she’d be able to tell you the best way to get home.
History class finally ended, and Mai Lin headed for the gym. The class had been playing basketball. Alison, who was as tall and thin and attractive as a tree, was very good at it. Beside her, Mai Lin felt like a very small and foolish ant. Today, however, the gym teacher pointed to a thick rope hanging from the ceiling and said, “Everybody! You’re going to climb this rope today.”

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A holiday in Penang is an annual affair for my family. My parents grew up in Penang and are very fond of Penang food. In December every year, we would drive up to the island to spend three days visiting their favorite food haunts(常去的地方).
This year, we started our journey up north on a Friday morning. It took us six hours to reach our destination. We always stayed at one of the hotels in Batu Ferringhi. The beach was just a short walk from the hotel entrance and our rooms had a lovely view of the sea. We spent our first evening playing on the beach. After dinner, we returned to our rooms to play games. My parents had a rule for our holidays which was that we were to spend time doing things together. There was to be no TV and no Internet.
The next morning, we went to Bukit Bendera and then spent the rest of the afternoon in town visiting our favorite hawker stalls(小贩摊位). As we were having tea at a coffee shop,we overheard people talking about an earthquake near Sumatera, an island in Indonesia. We headed back to the hotel and then went to the beach. We took a walk along the beach, picking up seashells along the way. Looking up, I saw the sun shining brighter than I ever knew before. I saw a tree trembling in the distance as it reflected the sun's rays. It never occurred to us that something awful would take place. Suddenly, I noticed a strange thing. The sea seemed to be leaving from the shore. I called my father to look at the curious occurrence. My father took one look and went pale. We saw a grey line in the distance moving towards the shore. It seemed to grow taller by the second.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a hot September afternoon, Peter and his friend Isabel were on their way to the library. When they passed by Tubman park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. As they entered the park, the sight of the swings (秋千) and the merry-go-round brought back a flood of memories of their childhood spent there. But now everything looked so old, sad, and dirty. Litter lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash bin. There were still young schoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the trash that littered the playground. A little boy told them that the city took the other trash cans away and the remaining one never got emptied often.
As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled their forehead. In the library, they encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they'd seen. Finally, she recommended them to go to the City Hall to voice their concerns.
The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of the City Hall but were met with an impatient officer. They were informed that the city couldn't help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and turned to Mrs. Evans for help.
Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the environment, for help. “This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours, ” said Mrs. Evans. She promised to arrange them to present their ideas to Go Green. Hearing this, their face lit up.
Two main tasks remained ahead: researching ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing presentation. As Isabel was good at researching while Peter always had a talent for speaking, they cooperated quite well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash bin can squeeze the trash down without being emptied often, which saves time, money, and energy. Based on this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over again.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
A week later, Peter stood nervously at the back of the hall where Go Green was meeting.
After the meeting, Isabel excitedly told Peter the good news.

I didn't continue college after graduation. I moved out of my family. With little work experience, I served as a waitress. But during the five years' labor, I found myself burning calories running about only for a tip.
I had had enough so I moved to a smaller town hoping to pursue a college degree. I promised I would never serve people again-at least not in such way. It was time to serve myself. Luckily, I received a position as an after-school program tutor at a local middle school, with the added benefit of completing English education degree. I had the opportunity to go big! The kid would need me -a role model and a trustworthy friend, I believed.
But my first day was welcomed by the students' indifference (冷漠). The desks were messy and the whole room smelled of dirty gym socks. My excitement began to die down. I doubted whether the new job was a mistake. The playground activity was deafening while homework time was not much better. After my repeated persistence, they finally turned off the playground mode. But just a few minutes passed when I noticed two kids quarreling in the corner.
I supposed it was another little incident but one kid named Jeremy bothered me. He shouted at me for coming at him. And when I asked them to return to their seats, he slammed (用力摔) his backpack and grew mad as I tried to urge him to take the right attitude. "I don't like you, homework and this after-school program! All you guys do is yell at me. I'm never coming back." He walked out of the classroom, slamming the door.
Naturally, I was so frustrated (挫败的). I wondered why I am here. Most kids disrespected me! I paused to take a deep breath. Then suddenly I thought to myself, "You said you would never serve people again, but you don't understand what these kids really need." At that moment I remembered my middle school life. I always had a poor attitude, never did my schoolwork, repeatedly got into fights, and disrespected my elders.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Hearing the teacher’s words, Mai Lin smiled. She knew what was coming. They’d done lots of physical fitness training at her old school and she was quite good at rope climbing. “Who’s first ” the teacher asked. “Alison ” To Mai Lin’s surprise, Alison turned as pale as the moon and shook her head. “She’s scared,” Mai Lin thought. “Perfect Alison was scared.” Suddenly Mai Lin heard her own voice saying, “I’ll do it.” Alison looked up at Mai Lin in great surprise, and all the other classmates seemed surprised, too. The teacher nodded and told Mai Lin to climb.
Paragraph 2:
Mai Lin stepped forward and got close to the rope. She appeared calm but was extremely excited. She climbed the rope very fast and reached the ceiling within what seemed a few seconds, effortlessly. As she reached the top, she glanced down at her fellow students below. Now it was Alison who appeared like a small ant. She saw Alison looking up, eyes wide with admiration. Mai Lin clung to the top of the rope for a moment longer and then headed down to join the class. Once she got on the ground, everybody cheered. Mai Lin knew she would be different from that day on.

One possible version :
My father shouted at us to run back to the hotel. He grabbed my hand and pulled me with him. As we reached the hotel gate, we heard a roaring sound behind us. Quickly, my father pushed us towards the stairs. Fear gripped us and we reached the first floor when we heard the roar of rushing water and glass breaking. My father yelled at us to keep climbing. We stopped on the fourth floor and looked down at the water below us. It had stopped rising. After some minutes, it began to drop.
We waited a long time before going downstairs. Hardly had the rushing water dropped when we saw the unrecogniz-able hotel gate. There was dirt and broken furniture everywhere. Some people who were caught in the water were either unconscious or burst into tears with pain. What we saw weakened our heart and we decided to help the victims after a narrow escape. Never had I had such a thrilling yet dangerous vacation before. The special trip to Penang was deeply impressed in my mind.

A week later, Peter stood nervously at the back of the hall where Go Green was meeting. Heart racing, palms sweating and throat tightening, he dragged his shaky legs onto the stage. But at the thought of the messy Tubman Park, the hard work he and Isabel poured into their presentation as well as Mrs. Evans' encouraging eyes, Peter quickly regained his composure and calmly explained the plight Tubman Park was currently trapped in. Logically and systematically, Peter brought the new trash cans to the judgers' attention and then articulated(说清楚) how they worked, why they were more cost-effective (物有所值的) and worth introducing. His persuasive and inspiring speech won constant approving nods from the panel of judders(评审团).
After the meeting, Isabel excitedly told Peter the good news. Go Green agreed to buy the new trash cans for Tubman Park! Hoping up and down(蹦蹦跳跳) , hardly could the two friends contain their raptures and they simply could not wait to break the good news to Mrs. Evans. On hearing the results, the retired teacher shed(洒下) tears of joy and pride. Never in her life had she witnessed two high school kids achieved such a feat(壮举). Now, equipped with the intelligent and efficient trash cans, Tubman Park returned to its former cleanness, tranquility(宁静) and merriness. Thanks to such kind individuals as Peter, Isabel and Mrs. Evans, Tubman Park, an earlier heaven (天堂) for kids, was finally restored and recreated.
B. 官方范文
A week later, Peter stood nervously at the back of the hall where Go Green was meeting. He could feel nothing but his hands shaking and heart pounding. “You’ll be great, Peter,” Isabel encouraged him. Just then, Peter heard his name being announced. It was time to present! Peter took a deep breath and then went on the stage. “Tubman Park needs a new kind of trash can,” Peter explained, pointing to a poster of a trash can. Then Peter explained the working principle of the trash can in detail. The judges nodded as they listened, seeming interested in the project.
After the meeting, Isabel excitedly told Peter the good news. Go Green had agreed to buy new trash cans for the park! Hearing the inspiring news, they both leaped into the air with joy. Peter barely had time to savor the moment before Isabel started sharing the news with Mrs. Evans and showing their gratitude to her. Learning the result, Mrs. Evans smiled through misty eyes. “I know you can do it! Tubman Park is sure to become one that is clean and green again!” Never before had Peter and Isabel been so proud of themselves.

第二节∶参考范文∶
As/was driving home,1 told myself that / would call my own parents. I had not contacted them for almost a month and my conscience bit me. I had always thought that I had so much work to do and couldn’t spare enough time to visit them. They had devoted most of their time to looking after me for a good part of their lives. I was sobbing terribly all the way home, ashamed of my neglect. Maybe they were suffering from the same scene as my neighbors.
Mr. Lim was discharged(准许离开) from the hospital after ten days. He made a speedy recovery. Apart from his unclear speech, he appeared healthy and happy a month after the incident. I didn’t know whether they had contacted with their son, but what I took from the incident helped me a lot. The incident has helped me to know what is important to me. It has also made me realize that when we give a helping hand to those who need our assistance, the world will be a better place to live in.

Realizing I was not different,I walked out into the hall and caught up with Jeremy. He was wandering aimlessly. I approached and said with encouragement, “Hey, I’m sorry that you feel like being called out. If you don’t understand your homework, I can help.” I also shared with him my experience. Jeremy just stood in silence, staring off blankly at the wall, and eventually I was informed that his parents recently lost jobs and the family was experiencing a lot of frustration. “I’m sorry.” He said quietly.
At that moment, my heart broke for this boy and his family life. I comforted him that hard times would go, led him back and helped him with his homework. Later, I reported the situation to school, which soon took charity work to help Jeremy. Jeremy was fresh mentally and physically. He studied hard and showed friendliness all the time. I was just glad that I got to be part of something larger that helps to make peoples’ lives better. And I finally understood why I was there - to serve these kids and to help them get through the hard times.
