What's more exciting than having a fresh hot pizza delivered to your door How about having it brought to you by a robot Thanks to Domino's Robotic Unit or DRU, that just became a reality. On March 8, the three foot tall robot made its first delivery to some lucky residents in Brisbane, Australia.
The autonomous DRU is the result of a cooperation between Domino's Pizza Australia and Marathon Robotics. The machine can cover a distance of up to 12 miles and back before requiring a battery recharge. Equipped with Google Maps and GPS guidance, DRU can go along bike paths and sidewalks and also find the most efficient way to its destination. LIDAR, a laser based sensor technology similar to the one used in self driving cars, enables DRU to detect and avoid obstacles, while traditional sensors ensure its path to its destination is safe. DRU's plastic shell protects the food from the bad weather, while its aluminum and steel container ensures that the pies remain hot.
The robot can fit up to ten pizzas and even has a separate cold area to accommodate drink orders. To access their food, customers have to enter the unique code provided to them by the company. This not only ensures that they pick up the right pizza, but also prevents the pies from getting stolen.
Domino's expects additional DRUs to be ready for service in their various Queensland locations within the next six months. But don't expect these super cute robots to replace humans anytime soon. According to Domino's, the DRU still needs extensive testing, which the company believes could take up to two years. There is also the issue of regulations. The public use of autonomous vehicles is still banned in most countries. But Don Meij, the CEO of Domino's Pizza, is not worried. He believes that one day DRU will become a necessary part of the Domino's family.

__1__ It sounds crazy, but these computer driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. So how do they work The cars have sensors all around which can detect other cars and obstacles in the road. Sensors on the wheels also help when parking, so the cars know how far they are from other parked cars. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation (导航) systems are used, so the cars know how to get to your destination. __2__ Finally, central computer systems take in all the information they receive from the sensors and cameras and process this to control the cars.
Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while “driving” will be possible with this new technology. You won't have to worry about remembering directions to where you're going. In addition, computers are generally more efficient drivers than humans, meaning emissions will be reduced. __3__ They don't get distracted by music or friends. They will obey the speed limit and they'll have quicker reaction time in case of an emergency.

Almost everyone stood when the bride walked down the aisle in her white gown, but not the wedding conductor, because she was fixed to her chair.
The nuptials at this ceremony were led by “I Fairy”, a 4 foot (1.5 meter) tall seated robot with flashing eyes and plastic pigtails (辫子). Sunday's wedding was the first time that a marriage had been led by a robot, according to manufacturer Kokoro Co.
“Please lift the bride's veil (面纱),” the robot said in a tinny voice, waving its arms in the air as the newlyweds kissed in front of guests.
The wedding took place at a restaurant in Hibiya Park in central Tokyo, where the I Fairy wore a wreath of flowers and directed a rooftop ceremony. Wires led out from beneath it to a black curtain a few feet away, where a man clicked commands into a computer.
Japan has one of the most advanced robotics industries in the world, with the government actively supporting the field for future growth. Industrial models in factories are now standard, but recently Japanese companies are making a push to inject robots into everyday life.
Honda makes a walking child shaped robot, and other firms have developed them to entertain the elderly or play baseball. Kokoro, whose corporate goal is to “touch the hearts of the people”, also makes giant dinosaur robots for exhibitions and life like android models that can smile and laugh. The company is a subsidiary (附属公司) of Sanrio Co., which owns the rights to Hello Kitty and other Japanese characters.
“This was a lot of fun. I think that Japanese have a strong sense that robots are our friends. Those in the robot industry mostly understand this, but people mainly want robots near them that serve some purpose,” said bride Satoko Inoue, 36, who works at manufacturer Kokoro Co.
The I Fairy sells for about 6.3 million yen (D|S 57,000) and three are in use in Singapore, the U.S. and Japan, according to the company spokeswoman Kayako Kido.

Selfie sticks (自拍杆) are now often used, as are selfie cameras on phones, and the word “selfie” was even added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013. The results of a recent research have showed that about 93 million selfies were taken per day in 2014, counting only those taken on Android phones.
While selfies are extremely common, opinions_on_selfies_are_divided,_with some seeing them as a creative idea and a way to connect other people and others seeing them as narcissistic (自恋的) and unreal.
As a new cultural pattern, selfies are of interest to psychologists, in terms of how people think and feel when taking and viewing both their own selfies and those posted by others. In a recent study published in Frontiers in Psychology, Sarah Diefenbach, a scientist at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich, carried out an online survey to study people's motivation (动机) for posting selfies and comments when taking and viewing selfies.
A total of 238 people living in Austria, Germany and Switzerland completed the survey. The researchers found that 77% of the volunteers regularly took selfies. Interestingly, as 77% of the volunteers taking selfies regularly, 62-67% agreed on the likely negative influences of selfies. 82% of the volunteers explained that they would rather see other types of photos instead of selfies on social media. This behavior, that many people regularly take selfies but most people don't appear to like them has been called the “selfie paradox (自拍悖论)” by Diefenbach.
The key to the paradox may lie in the way the volunteers view their own selfies, compared with those of others. The volunteers explained that their own selfies have greater self exhibition and are more believable when compared with selfies taken by others. “This may explain how everybody can take selfies without feeling narcissistic. If most people think like this, then it is no wonder that the world is full of selfies,” Diefenbach explains.

8.According to Diefenbach, the reason why the world is full of selfies is that ________.
A.selfies on social media should be changed regularly
B.few people realize that they take selfies too often
C.the volunteers believe their own selfies are more believable
D.people who like to take selfies don't consider they are narcissistic

Futurologists (未来学家) predict that life will probably be very different in 2050 in all the fields of activity, from entertainment to technology. First of all, it seems that TV channels will have disappeared by 2050. Instead, people will choose a programme from a “menu” (菜单) and a computer will send the programme directly to the television. Today, we can use the World Wide Web to read newspaper stories and see pictures on a computer thousands of kilometers away. By 2050, music, films, programmes, newspapers and books will come to us by computer. We will also be able to see, smell and touch the things that we see on television.
In transport, cars will run on new, clean “gas” and they will go very fast. Cars will have computers to control the speed of the car and there won't be any accidents. Today, many cars have computers that tell drivers exactly where they are. By 2050, the computer will control the car and drive it to where you want to go. Space planes will fly all over the world and people will fly from Los Angels to Tokyo in just two hours.
In technology, robots will have replaced people in factories. Many factories already use robots. Big companies prefer robots — they do not ask for pay rises or go on strike, and they work 24 hours a day. By 2050, we will see robots everywhere — in factories, schools, offices, hospitals, shops and homes.
Last but not least, medicine technology will have conquered many diseases. By 2050, we will be able to help blind and deaf people see again and hear again. Scientists will be able to produce clones (克隆) of people and decide how they look, how they behave and how much intelligence they have.

For your next out of this world vacation, you now have the option of literally going out of this world — but it'll cost you $40 million. Then again, can you really put a price tag on having the time of your life According to a new report from Popular Mechanics, Russia is looking to build a luxury hotel in outer space. There you will wake up to see a breathtaking blue planet — the earth! The hotel is expected to be stationed on the International Space Station (ISS).
While space tourism itself isn't exactly a novel idea, the notion of building a hotel out there hasn't been raised before. Really, other companies are still focused on the transportation part of the_puzzle — after all, a trip to space is enough for most folks.
According to Popular Mechanics, the hotel will include a luxury orbital suite with big windows, personal hygiene (卫生) facilities, exercise equipment, and yes, WiFi. Because if you can't share your experience on social media, did it really even happen
Of course, the reasons behind the hotel aren't just for fun and games. Apparently, space tourism might be able to help the Russians pay for another module to add to the International Space Station. Russian space contractor RKK Energia is currently building the first such module, which will give scientists a laboratory and power supply station from which to conduct tests.
If any of this is going to happen, however, Russia is going to have to hurry. With the ISS expected to be out of use in 2028, there's little time to build the hotel and find wealthy tourists to actually pay for a trip into outer space.
So if you've recently come into a fortune and are interested in investing in what could be the time of your life, ISS is calling your name.

In Australia, a cattle ranch (大牧场) called Suppleback Downs is only slightly smaller than the state of Rhode Island. Unsurprisingly, it can be hard to keep track of cows in this area. That's where Swagbot, an Australian cowboy robot, comes in. The robot is designed to herd (放牧) cattle on ranches that humans can't easily cover on their own. “Australia has very large cattle stations usually operated by one person,or a couple, for example,”said Salah Sukkarieh,a robotics professor at the University of Sydney.
“One of the biggest issues that one has is animal health,” he said.“So building this type of equipment is really about doing two things: One is to help the farmer with daily operations, and the other is to look at whether we can monitor animal health.”
Swagbot can herd cattle through rugged places, and the researchers plan to fit it with motion sensors (移动探测器) that try to discover if an animal is sick or hurt.
One challenge: Now, the cattle seem to find the robot scary. Researchers have noticed that when dealing with cows they are fine with the robot, but when dealing with cattle, they seem to be scared. Researchers are working on improving the design to help.
Swagbot still needs more development before it can really be used, and then a farmer can tell it to go to a certain location on a ranch, and it can avoid obstacles (障碍) to make it. And it's not likely to fully replace cowboys anytime soon. “The environment is too complex for robots to do all these tasks,” he said. “What I see for now is how such systems can be used as too for the farmer or the cowboy.”

Ⅵ.阅读理解
In the future, the Internet will be different from what it is now. There will be many more websites. It is predicted that in the year 2100, there will be hundreds of billions of websites. This means that the use of search engines will become much more important. And there will also be many more sites in different languages. This means that on every proper website, there will be links with the language you want.
Another prediction on the Internet is that data transmission (传输) speed will increase globally. According to Akamai Technologies, the average global data transmission speed in late 2009 was 1.7 megabits per pare that to the record for data transmission speed set by Bell Labs:100 billion megabits per second. At that speed, you could transmit 400 DVDs worth of data every second. That's an enormous gap between what's currently possible and what's commercially available. But as time passes, the costs of producing super high speed networks will decrease.
In the future, people will live under the sea and the housing shortage will be solved. There will be lots of glass domes (穹状建筑物) under the sea, which allow people to look all around into the sea. Air will be provided via air pipes which lead to the open air. You can travel from one dome to another via a kind of submarine which will also be made of glass. The domes will be so beautiful and the view under the sea will be so impressive that many people will prefer to live under water, and less people will prefer to live on land. This will have a positive effect on the environment on land.
In the future we won't use oil or gas as energy any more. We will make use of sunlight, water and wind. Cars will run on water. Just fill your tank with water, and you can drive further than you could drive with the same amount of gasoline. Also, the exhaust won't be damaging to the environment, because it'll just be water vapor. So the water cycle won't change, we'll keep the same amount of water on the earth, and we won't run out of water. Also, all energy will be supplied by natural sources: sunlight, wind and water.
