One minute, Renata Glasner is watching the waves crash on Leblon beach from her wheelchair. The next, she's riding the waves on a specially adapted surfboard.
Glasner, a 35 year old graphic designer, was found to have the disease of multiple sclerosis (多发性硬化) four years ago. She is one of dozens of disabled people being assisted by AdaptSurf, a Rio based non governmental organization that aims to make beaches accessible to the disabled and encourage them to practice water sports. Men and women with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, people missing a limb (肢体), the blind, the deaf and even the paralyzed (瘫痪的) all hit the waves here.
“The taste of salt water has no price,” said Glasner, who began to lose control over her legs shortly after the birth of her first child and now requires a helper to move her from her wheelchair onto the surfboard. “After you're diagnosed with a disease like mine, you can't even imagine you're ever again going to experience that taste.”
AdaptSurf was started in 2007, 10 years after a robbery left co founder Henrique Saraiva partially paralyzed. The 18 year old Saraiva had been cycling near his home in a nice Rio neighborhood when he was shot by passing thieves.
Saraiva eventually traded his wheelchair for the crutches (拐杖) that he still uses to get around. But Saraiva says that surfing is the only time he can really forget about his disability. “It's the one place where I can feel like I'm just like everybody else.”
In Brazil the beach is a center stage for social life. It's where families reunite, friendships are made, couples come together and deals are struck. “Imagine, you're in a country that's surrounded by beaches, where the beach is an almost mystical (神秘的) place. But when you're confined to a wheelchair, you sit there sweating under the sun and watching everyone play in the water,” said Saraiva.
Several dozen disabled people attend AdaptSurf, taking hours long bus rides to be there every weekend. The group has even had people come from as far as the capital, Brasilia, some 725 miles (1,170 kilometers) away. AdaptSurf meets every Saturday and Sunday of the year, weather permitting.
1.The main purpose of AdaptSurf is to ________.
A.improve its members' surfing skills
B.enable disabled people to enjoy water sports
C.research adapted surfboards
D.find practical cures for disabled and paralyzed people
由第二段的“aims to make beaches accessible to the disabled and encourage them to practice water sports”可知答案是B。
2.By saying “The taste of salt water has no price”, Glasner suggests that ________.
A.it took her a long time to get used to the sea water
B.surfing skills are difficult for disabled people to develop
C.surfing is a cheap sport for disabled people like her
D.she really treasures the opportunity to surf again
这里的“has no price”意思是“priceless”。
3.We can conclude from the article that members of AdaptSurf ________.
A.have to help themselves onto their surfboards
B.mostly live in a Rio neighborhood by the beach
C.are required to meet every weekend throughout the year
D.feel they've gotten past their disabilities when they're on their surfboards
根据文章第五段“surfing is the only time he can really forget about his disability. ‘It's the one place where I can feel like I'm just like everybody else.’”
4.We can learn from the article that Henrique Saraiva ________.
A.lost his legs fighting with robbers
B.wants to help other people who are like him
C.used to be a huge fan of cycling
D.rarely feels that he is different from others

Epidemics throughout history
With recent press reports drawing parallels between Bird Flu and a killer epidemic in the past, Jim Smith looks 1.through the history of epidemics for clues about what the future might hold.
Since Bird Flu first appeared in 1997, it has taken more than a hundred lives. Many people fear it could be the next global epidemic, especially as scientists who studied tissue from the bodies of people who died 2.of the 1918 Spanish Flu proved that Bird Flu is a modern 3.adaptation (adapt) of the same virus.
One of the 4.earliest (early) epidemics on record happened about 500~550 AD when the Roman emperor at the time was attempting to rebuild the Roman Empire. This epidemic swept through North Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
In urban areas all over Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, up to one half of the population was lost to the Black Death.
Another epidemic that spread in similar conditions was the Great Flu Epidemic of 1918, also called the Spanish Flu.It 5.struck (strike) near the end of the First World War and left families 6.mourning (mourn) worldwide.
The SARS epidemic began in 2002 with a lung disease in Guangdong Province and spread quickly after Dr Liu Jianjun, the carrier, came to Hong Kong and passed the virus to people who carried it to Canada, Vietnam and Singapore.
No one really knew much about SARS as it was completely new. This meant that there were no prescription drugs or tablets 7.to_treat (treat) it and doctors were not sure how to prevent it either.
Meanwhile, governments worldwide have also underlined the fact that 8.thorough and systematic medical research on Bird Flu needs to lead to a cure as soon as possible. Countries will need to work together to do this as the SARS epidemic proved how teamwork 9.among nations can save lives. With all the international effort being made, we have to have 10.faith (faithful) that there will be solutions in time to stop a Bird Flu epidemic in its tracks.
The most complex object known to humanity is the human brain — and not only is it complex, but it is one of the few natural phenomena that science has no consciousness of. To try to replicate (复制) something that is so poorly understood may therefore seem like pride. But you have to start somewhere, and International Business Machines (IBM) and the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), in Switzerland, propose to start by replicating “in silico”, one of the brain's building blocks.
In a partnership announced, the two organizations said they would be working together to build a simulation (模拟) of a structure known as a neo cortical (新大脑皮质的) column on a type of IBM supercomputer that is currently used to study the molecular functioning of genes. If that works, they plan to use more powerful computers to link such simulated columns together into something that mimics (模仿) a brain.
In a real brain, a neo cortical column is a cylindrical (圆柱形的) element about a third of a millimeter in diameter and three millimeters long. It is these columns, arranged side by side like the cells of a honeycomb, which make up the famous “grey matter” that has become shorthand for human intelligence. The Blue Gene/L supercomputer that will be used for the simulation consists of enough independent processors for each to be programmed to mimic an individual nerve cell in a column.
The EPFL's contribution to the Blue Brain Project will be to create a digital description of how the columns behave. The database from its Brain Mind Institute will provide the raw material for the simulation. Biologists and computer scientists will then connect the artificial nerve cells up in a way that mimics nature. They will do so by assigning electrical properties (电能) to them, and telling them how to communicate with each other and how they should modify their connections with one another depending on their activity.
That_will_be_no_mean_feat. Even a single nerve cell is complicated, not least because each one has about 10,000 connections with others. And nerve cells come in great variety — relying, for example, on different chemical transmitters to carry messages across those connections. Eventually, however, a digital representation of an entire column should occur.
Assuming that the growth of computing power continues to follow Moore's Law, the leader of IBM's side thinks it should be practical to mimic an entire human brain in silico this way in ten to fifteen years. Such an artificial brain would, of course, be a powerful research tool. It would allow neurological experiments that currently take days in a “web lab” to be conducted in seconds. The researchers hope that their simulated brain will reveal the secrets of how certain psychiatric and neurological, disorders develop. But that is probably not the real reason for doing it. The most interesting question, surely, is whether such an artificial brain will be intelligent, or conscious, or both.
1.In a real brain, a neo cortical column ________.
A.looks like the cells of a honeycomb
B.is a simulation of a structure
C.is the famous “grey matter”
D.contains a large number of nerve cells
2.What does the underlined sentence “That_will_be_no_mean_feat” in Paragraph 5 indicate
A.It is rather difficult to connect the artificial nerve cells up.
B.The function of chemical transmitters is hard to understand.
C.A digital representation of an entire column is time consuming.
D.A single nerve cell is complicated to identify across connections.
3.The fundamental purpose of doing the research is probably ________.
A.to simulate an entire human brain in silico
B.to tell us how some certain disorders emerge
C.to discover how the artificial brain would work
D.to examine whether Moore's Law is still functioning

Sport is not only physically challenging, but it can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create too much anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.
The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents' and coaches' criticisms to heart and find fault with themselves.
Coaches and parents should also be cautious that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today's youth sport setting young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find fault with youngsters' performances. Positive support should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive support motivates (激发) and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.
1.An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is to ________.
A.make sports less competitive
B.increase their sense of success
C.reduce their mental stress
D.make sports more challenging
根据第一段中的“Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout.”可知,stress(紧张,压力)会导致burnout(筋疲力尽,撒手不干),所以阻止这种现象发生的有效方法就是减少他们的思想压力。
2.Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes ________.
A.believing that criticism is beneficial for their early development
B.without realizing criticism may destroy their self confidence
C.in order to make them remember life's lessons
D.so as to put more pressure on them
3.According to the passage, parents and coaches should ________.
A.pay more attention to letting children enjoy sports
B.help children to win every game
C.train children to cope with stress
D.enable children to understand the positive aspect
of sports
4.The author's purpose of writing the passage is to ________.
A.teach young athletes how to avoid burnout
B.persuade young children not to worry about criticism
C.stress the importance of positive support to children
D.discuss the skill of combining criticism with encouragement

About 15 years ago, when my children were still in elementary school, I was very active in the Parent Teacher Association. At one of the monthly meetings the topic of discussion was the new curriculum (课程) that the state of Michigan was presenting. Many concerns were voiced at that meeting, and one of them was my own. My concern was that the children were being taught things that were once taught at a much later age.
Let's face it: children today have to learn and adapt to (适应) a more technological society, one where if you're not a peak performer you're just not well received. Some say that the children of today have it so much easier than 10-20 years ago. They're given so much more, not having to work for their toys and little extras. They sit all day long in front of a computer playing games ... How hard can that be
I, for one, think that today's child is missing out on so many wonderful experiences because of technology. What type of people skills are they learning They can thumb type faster than any other generation before them, but they can't pick up the phone and have a really deep conversation.
There is an elementary school not far behind my home and I used to see children on the playground every day. Weekdays and weekends, there would be children playing, shouting with joy. But now I don't see many children there after school, nor on the weekend. Has the playground gone from our children's life
I know many teachers, some of whom are my friends, may throw_a_shoe_at me when I say play doesn't always need to have a purpose. And it doesn't always have to have a teaching module included. To compete in today's world, the children have to be experts at multitasking (多任务处理), and on top of their game at all times. I, for one, think this is a shame.
5.Why was the author concerned
A.The children didn't learn much at school.
B.The parents' opinions were not valued by schools.
C.The new curriculum was too advanced for the children.

There is little doubt that humans used herbs (药草) for healing well before anything could be written about them.
Many authorities recognize Hippocrates as the “father of medicine” for the European tradition. The treatment of the Hippocratic physician reflected his fundamental approach. It was the treatment of an individual, not a disease, and the treatment of the whole body, not any part of it. Treatment was based on the fundamental idea that nature had a strong healing force of its own, and that the main role of the physician was to assist nature in this healing process, rather than to direct it. The main ally of the physician in assisting nature in this process was diet. Only if diet failed were drugs used, and surgery was a last resort.
The great philosopher Aristotle was the son of a medical man and a medical man himself, but his main influence on the development of European medicine was through his student, Theophrastus, called the “father of botany (植物学)”. He was the first known author in Europe of a classification system for plants with accompanying comments about their medicinal value. He described about 450 different medicinal plants. However, this text has not come down through history, and is only noted in later commentaries.
The first document of herbal medicine that is regarded as a medical classic in the European tradition was De Materia Medica by Dioscorides. Dioscorides was a surgeon accompanying the army. He travelled far, collected much information, and gained considerable medical experience. Dioscorides had recorded herb knowledge for 600 plants. The book's pictures were considered the only authoritative ones for European medicinal plants for over 1,000 years. The work was translated into English in 1655, and continued to be the primary reference on European herbs.
Greek medicine continued to improve for several decades after Dioscorides, but it eventually began to stagnate.

Once upon a time, when you first attended a youth sporting event, your parents probably weren't expecting you to become a professional athlete. They signed up for a basketball, football or swimming course for you in the hope that you might learn lessons about winning gentlemanly, losing with dignity (尊严) and insisting on it when things get hard.Yes, playing games is good exercise, but it is the life lessons that matter most.
For many of us, instead of looking to improve our minds and spirits, we began judging progress only by the size of our muscles or the numbers on a weighing machine. The thought that athletic competition is about greater life lessons and the building of character has been further undermined (削弱) by headlines about professional athletes.
“And yet there's still strong evidence that sports strongly improve certain personal qualities,” says Angela Lumpkin, Professor of the Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Kansas. And that's true for athletes of any age.Amateur sports (业余体育运动) provide a safe place for competition. They also provide a practice ground for managing stress.
The advantages of taking part in a sport can seep (渗透) into your professional life, too.In basketball, for example, “Getting everyone to play the right role on the court is the key to success,” says Alan Arlt, the founder of the Life Time Fitness basketball program Ultimate Hoops.“That is certainly useful in the business world, where everyone understands their role in the organization.”“In athletic events, you go through good and bad times often in the period of two hours,” says former NBA head coach Flip Saunders.“Do you have the calm manner to settle yourself down, or do you totally lose it and get thrown out of the game which hurts both you and your team All of that on court experience has a real effect on how you deal with real life situations.”

Many people wake up feeling not rested in the morning. And many of us ignore this problem as the day goes on, forgetting that the restlessness we carry throughout the day might have a cause.
We simply do not give ourselves enough of a chance to sleep. A survey of over 74,000 people found that 35 percent reported sleeping less than seven hours per night on average. Even more, the amount of sleep we allow ourselves has changed greatly over the past 15 years.
This lack (缺乏) of sleep can lead to many problems. One study found that simply limiting yourself to six hours of sleep a night for two weeks made performance on a task as poor as if you had stayed up all night on a single night. Now consider ruling out a few things.
If you intend to try extending (延长) your sleep period, consider giving yourself a chance to sleep longer for a full week. My best advice is to try to sleep in for 3 4 consecutive (连续的) days. Start on the weekend to make it easier. Going to bed earlier doesn't always work, even if you are tired. Your body clock might be programmed in such a way that keeps you from falling asleep quickly, but it might let you sleep in longer.
When you try this, you might find that your problems go away, you feel better, and you wake up feeling more rested. But you might also find that you simply don't need that much sleep and you may have got insomnia (失眠). You might say that this advice is not exactly rocket science, but, given the bad influence of sleeping problems, it might at least be brain science.

I know what you're thinking: Pizza? For breakfast But the truth is that you can have last night's leftovers in the morning if you want to.
I know lots of women who skip breakfast, and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it.Some say they don't have time, others think they're “saving” calories (卡路里), and still others just don't like breakfast food.
But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you're trying to lose weight.“Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,” says Katherine Brooking, R.D., who developed the super easy eating plan for this year's “SELF CHALLENGE”.And even pizza can be healthy if it's loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.
Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories.Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day.Researchers at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.
So eat something in the morning, anything.I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice.I say, try heating up last night's leftovers — it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, “You can always eat it tomorrow,” I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it ... you may save yourself some pre bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat burning effects.
