France is experiencing an unusually mild winter, which has led to low snowfall in ski areas across the country.
One affected ski area is Le Mourtis, in the Pyrenees mountains of southern France. The lack of snow has forced the holiday village to temporarily close its ski runs—at the height of the winter season. Local restaurants and hotels are seeing fewer visitors. People who do come to the area are seeking to do other things besides skiing. Warmer temperatures have made hiking one of the most popular activities. Recent daytime temperatures at Le Mourtis have reached 10 degrees Celsius. Some hikers even removed winter clothing while making their way across mountain areas containing very little snow.
“Skiing No one today can guarantee it,” said hotel operator Gillaizeau. He has been making money by renting out two-wheeled motorcycles to help visitors in the area have fun. The scooters can be ridden down grassy mountains. They come with equipment made for riding on snow, but Gillaizeau has attached bicycle wheels instead. His ski rental equipment remains untouched. He says he has had to reduce the hours of some workers and expects business losses during the season to drop as much as 15 percent.
Many people in the area believe the latest winter is more than just a bad year. The last time France experienced such a mild December and January was in 1900, French weather officials say. Christelle Robert is an official with Meteo-France, the country’s national weather service. She told Reuters that mild winters and less snow seem to be a clear sign of global warming.
Scientists have predicted a continued rise in world temperatures. People connected to the area’s ski industry are considering a future with much less snow. If such weather continues, ski resorts around 1,600 meters above sea level will be so warm that they will not even be able to use artificial snow because it will melt.
8. Why did some hikers take off their winter clothes while crossing mountains
A. They were wearing too thick clothes. B. They had been exercising too much.
C. The mountain roads were very rough. D. The temperature was not cold at all.
9. What does the underlined word“They” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Visitors. B. Scooters. C. Bicycle wheels. D. Grassy mountains.
10. What can be learned from the third and fourth paragraphs
A. The latest mild winter was in 1900. B. Little snowfall has caused great economic loss.
C No one wants to ski because of the bad weather. D. There’s something wrong with ski equipment.
11. Where does this text possibly come from
A. A medical report. B. A tourist handbook. C. A weather forecast. D. An economic journal.
D
A computer programme can identify breast cancer from routine scans with greater accuracy than human experts, some researchers said. They hoped what they developed could prove a breakthrough in the fight against the global killer.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, with more than 2 million new diagnoses last year alone. Regular screening is vital in detecting the earliest signs of the disease in patients who show no obvious symptoms.
In Britain, women over 50 are advised to get an examination of a breast every three years, the results of which are analyzed by two independent experts. But interpreting the scans leaves room for error, and a small percentage of all mammograms(乳房X光检查) either return a false positive—misdiagnosing a healthy patient as having cancer—or false negative—missing the disease as it spreads.
Now researchers at Google Health have trained an artificial intelligence model to detect cancer in breast scans from thousands of women in Britain and the United States. The images had already been reviewed by doctors in real life but unlike in a clinical setting, the machine had no patient history to inform its diagnoses. The team found that their AI model could predict breast cancer from the scans with a similar accuracy level to expert radiographers.
Further, the AI showed a reduction in the proportion of cases where cancer was incorrectly identified—5.7 percent in the US and 1.2 percent in Britain, respectively. It also reduced the percentage of missed diagnoses by 9.4 percent among US patients and by 2.7 percent in Britain.
“The earlier you identify a breast cancer, the better it is for the patient,” Dominic King, UK lead at Google Health, told AFP. “We think about this technology in a way that supports and enables an expert, or a patient ultimately, to get the best outcome from whatever diagnostics they’ve had.”
12. What’s the text mainly about
A. Regular screening. is important for women who are over 50.
B. AI is more powerful than experts in diagnosing breast cancer.
C. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women.
D. The earlier you identify a breast cancer the better the result is.

C. The patients tend to be negative. D. It is frequently misdiagnosed.
15. What’s Dominic King’s attitude toward the new technology
A. Skeptical. B. Favorable. C. Cautious. D. Indifferent.

Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard the Titanic when it struck an iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912, a mere 700 people lived on. Here is one story of the Titanic survivors whose stories are still haunting more than a century after the ship's sinking, revealing the true facts of the disaster.
A junior wireless officer aboard the Titanic, Harold Bride was one of the two people responsible for sending SOS messages to nearby ships, thus allowing the Carpathian to rescue the Titanic survivors.
He and another man on duty, Jack Phillips, raced to send SOS signals to nearby ships-but as the communications specialists, they knew that the closest, the Carpathian, would likely not arrive until alter the Titanic sank. They worked wildly until Captain Edward Smith came and told them they were relieved of duty;the ship had nearly lost power, and only two lifeboats remained.
They made a run for Collapsible B and were just getting it into the water when a wave swept across the deck(甲板),throwing both Harold Bride and the upturned boat into the ocean.
Bride and 15 others struggled onto the waterlogged, sinking Collapsible B and survived until other lifeboats collected them and conveyed them to the Carpathian.
Once aboard the Carpathian, Bride got back to work and began helping the ship's wireless officer send messages from the other Titanic survivors.
When the Carpathian made land, Bride had to be carried ashore: he had injured one foot in the plunge into the ocean, and the other was frostbitten after a night in the Atlantic's icy waters.

Thunderstorms often show up uninvited to Carnival (狂欢节) in Brazil. This year's attempt to influence the skies took place in Sao Pablo by a party's official sponsor,Skoal, a Brazilian beer brand. "The fun stops when it rains," says Pedro Ada my, Skoal's marketing director. So do beer sales.
An airplane painted with Skoal's logo sprayed (喷洒) water droplets into clouds to make rain fall before the clouds reached the city. According to its YouTube video that has been viewed 12 million times,it is a "mission worthy of science fiction".
Whether it's science or fiction is up for debate. The use of cloud-seeding to increase rainfall dates back to the 1940s. But the United States government stopped funding it in the 1980s due to a lack of " scientific proof of the effectiveness of intentional weather change", according to the National Research Council. A new paper based on experiments in Idaho found that seeding clouds with silver iodide increased snowfall on three occasions, but the authors say that more research is needed to find out if it can reliably promote precipitation (降水). Paulo Artaxo, a Brazilian physicist, says flatly that cloud-seeding is "useless".
Still, governments and firms in many countries use the technology. Sao Pablo's water company has signed million dollar contracts with ModClima to bring rain, most recently during a drought in 2014-15. Although cloud-seeding normally uses a chemical such as silver iodide to provide a surface around which water or ice droplets form, ModClima says it has invented an "experimental" method that uses water alone.
Carnival-goers cheered when the first two days were cloudy but dry. Many shared Skol's video. But at around 5pm on February 24th, the sky darkened and rain poured down. Celebrants at one block party left the Skol stands and rushed to buy umbrellas and plastic rain capes.
8 Why did Skoal support cloud-seeding
A To increase rainfall.
B. To promote its beer sales.
C. To provide evidence for a research.
D To highlight the theme of the Carnival.
9. Which is Artaxo's attitude toward cloud-seeding
A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Conservative. D. Negative.
10. Why was the US government no longer in favor of cloud-seeding
A. Its outcome couldn't be proved.
B. It worked in limited situations.
C. It needed more field researches.
D. It used an un-ecofriendly chemical.
11. What is the best title of the text
A. Could rain ruin fun
B. How do we change weather
C. Could we rely on intentional rain
D. How do we avoid cloud-seeding pollution
D
Colin Chapman, the founder of Lotus Cars, was one of motor racing's most influential engineers. He summed up his philosophy as "simplify, then add lightness". A simple, featherweight car might be slower on the straights than a beefy muscle-machine, he reasoned. But it would be faster everywhere else. Between 1962 and 1978 Lotus won seven Formula One constructors championships.
It appears to be an uncommon insight since humans always struggle with subtractive thinking. When asked to improve something, they tend to suggest adding new things rather than removing some, even when additions lead to not satisfying results. In one study conducted by Gabrielle Adams, along with colleagues at the University of Virginia, participants were asked to change a pattern on a grid(网格)of coloured squares to make it balanced. Although that could be done equally well by adding new squares or by deleting existing ones,78% chose the additive option.
But why people forget that less is often more One experiment asked participants to redesign an unbalanced Lego structure so that it could support a house-brick. Participants could earn a dollar for fixing the problem, but each piece of Lego they added cut that reward by ten cents. Even then, only 41% worked out that simplifying the structure by removing a single block, rather than complicating it by adding more, was the way to maximise the payout. Practice improved people's chances of spotting subtractive solutions, suggesting that many were simply not thinking of the possibility, at least at first.
What all this amounts to is evidence for " additive thinking" entering the list of" cognitive biases"(认知偏差).The 2002 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded for demonstrating that humans are not thinking logically as economists do. Instead of thinking a problem through and coming up with an ideal solution, they tend to use cognitive shortcuts that are fast and—mostly—"good enough".
12. Why is Chapman's case mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To prove his philosophy.
B. To introduce the topic.
C. To support the argument.
D. To provide an example.
13. What were the participants asked to do in Adams's study
A. To balance a pattern.
B. To plus new squares.
C To delete original squares.
D. To change a pattern's colour.
14. What can we know about subtractive thinking from paragraph 3
A. It can make things more complex.
B. It is a shortcut to gaining a fortune.
C. It can be facilitated through practice.
D. It is a common way to tackle problems.
15. What does the author try to convey through the text
A. Less is often more.
B. Think less and act more.
C. Additive thinking is a shortcut.
D. Economists think more logically.

During the COVID-19 crisis, even the simple act of buying groceries has been completely transformed. For seniors this task is even more challenging. Concordia University's ACT project team has joined with community partners in the neighbourhood to fill this gap. They've rapidly created a new program-COVID-19 Grocery Response NDG.
The program uses a model that pairs volunteers with seniors, based on availability and language. Those volunteers are trained by ACT's team via video conferencing and then given a list of older adults. The volunteer calls the individuals and takes their order, working with grocer offerings of a Provigo store in the area. When the call is over, the order gets sent to Provigo, which gathers and delivers the order to the senior. It won't take the place of the work of the food bank; seniors are paying for their groceries.
There is also an important social element to the call, which doubles as a friendly check -in. The volunteer chats a bit with the senior, who may be very lonely and anxious. One volunteer says it has also been a rewarding experience and gives her the opportunity to help others while staying at home, which they are all being encouraged to do.
The program is a response to a number of factors, including the fact that many older adults are on a fixed income and may not have the internet access needed to order groceries online. It is targeting seniors who aren't able to access New Hope's usual meals on wheels service.
So far the project is a success, with a growing number of volunteers and seniors. As for what's next, Concordia is optimistic but acknowledges that the team will need to be nimble to accommodate the changing realities of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are at a critical time and we need to do everything we can, together, to help out.

If you read the news about honeybee survival, it's all very confusing.
The Hoover Institution's Dr. Henry Miller notes “The reality is that honeybee populations are not declining. According to U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO) statistics, the world's honeybee population rose to 80 million colonies(群落) in 2011 from 50 million in1960.”Meanwhile Jennifer Sass of the Natural Resources Defense Council points out “The number of managed honeybee colonies in the U. S. has dropped from four million hives(蜂群) in 1970 to 2.5 million today.”
Surprisingly, both of these claims are correct. Miller points to the “global” commercial honeybee-hive count, which has grown considerably. Sass points to domestic colony numbers only, which have in fact declined.
Far more bees are farmed for making honey than for pollination(传粉) services. Since more honey is now made overseas than it was in the past, more hives are kept overseas, and fewer in the United States and Europe. And the global number of commercial hives and honey they produce has grown to meet the demands of an expanding world population. Such shifts offer no evidence of a honeybee hive crisis. They simply represent the market forces of supply and demand.
The FAO data also clarify that national or even regional declines in the size of the managed honeybee population cannot prove claims of a global pollinator decline or a pollination crisis. However it emphasizes that solutions to those problems must be motivated locally, rather than globally.
Solutions will follow only if we take a non-subjective look at the issues, so we can address them appropriately rather than have a crisis mentality. As I highlight in a recent post for The Hill,a big part of the solution lies at the very local level: with the beekeepers, farmers, and communities that surround them.
12. What makes the news confusing
A. Various species. B. Different affects.
C. Complicated statistics. D. Contradictory conclusions.
13. What contributes to the growth of commercial hives
A. The claims of the FAO.
B. The shift of honey export.
C. The increasing demands of honey.
D. The more services of pollination.
14. What's the author's attitude to the honeybee population issue
A. Supportive. B. Objective.
C. Confused. D. Doubtful.
15. What would be the best title for the text
A. Honeybee Crisis Solved or Not
B. Honeybee Population Declining or Not
C. Honeybee Market Global or Local
D. Honeybee Research Global or Local
