Looks like Hank and Stefan were hanging out at Olivia’s last night. What were they doing there Was anyone else there Why wasn’t I invited Do they not like me You might have experienced this emotion we call FOMO, or the fear of missing out. ___16___ Psychologists have been studying why FOMO happens, what harm it does and how we can cope with it.
___17___ This goes back to our earliest ancestors that formed cooperative groups for survival. At that time, being left alone meant being exposed to great danger. So humans have evolved to feel anxious when they find themselves left out.
Nowadays, with the rise of social media, FOMO has become an even bigger issue, especially for young people who seem to be always online. One survey has found that 60% of teens feel stressed if they lose track of their friends or when they find out their friends are having fun without them. In fact, excessive (过度的) worrying about what others are doing only causes teens to admire others blindly and miss out on their own lives. ___18___ And consequently, the teens lose their sense of identity and struggle with low self-confidence.
Research proves there is a real relation between the time spent on digital technology and higher levels of anxiety. But just switching the phone off does not erase the feelings that FOMO causes. Teens may still worry that they are missing out. ___19___ The key is to set aside specific time each day to check social media. By doing this, teens will not be glued to their screens and will become more productive.
They can also practice full-concentration, an exercise where a person learns to intensely
focus on something other than social media. Whether it is reading a book, chatting with a friend,
trying a new recipe, or hiking through the forest, the goal of full-concentration is that teens
completely absorb themselves in what they are doing at the moment. ___20___
A. Human beings are historically a social species.
B. That anxiety you feel can be awful, but not so hopeless.
C. In this way there will be no room in their brains for FOMO.
D. Generally people with low social ranks tend to suffer from FOMO.
E. That is, FOMO keeps their attention focused outward instead of inward.
F. One practical approach to handling FOMO is to schedule technology breaks.
G. Encourage teens to recognize what they see online may not actually be the case.

For many of us, nothing is better than burying our head in a good book. Whether it's a crime story or a biography of someone's amazing life, it's good to read a book to switch off from the distractions of everyday life.
___16___ It can be educational and broaden the mind. A good novel can make us happy, or make us cry as we sympathize with characters. A list of books about "bibliotherapy” can be offered to patients. ___17___ It's become so successful that it's about to be extended to children as well.
Professor Philip Davis, author of a book called Reading for Life, studies people in reading groups and found that it's reading literature --- written work thought to have artistic value, that has the best effect. He told the BBC that when reading something for pleasure, "...the brain begins to work from different parts, and it gets excited, it gets pre — emotional. ___18___”
Of course, it's easy in our smartphone generation to abandon a good book and play with our phones instead. But opening up a paperback could be a simple way to help maintain our mental health. ___19___ And they may allow you to see that awkward situation you've been anxious about for weeks from someone else's point of view.
___20___ If the book list doesn't appeal, you could read book reviews, visit a library or bookshop or ask a friend. Once you've found the right text, you'll be fascinated!

There are now six fires burning at emergency levels in Australia.____16____The smoke is so intense and so thick it can be seen from space. 2,000 homes have been destroyed. Six million hectares of land charred, leading to death of the nation’s wildlife.
____17____They are lightning strikes, winds and people who set fire deliberately. But one of the biggest reasons they’ve become so extreme, is the same reason as East Africa’s flood. Bushfires in Australia are a natural part of the country’s ecosystem.____18____Even New South Wales, with the largest population, is used to breaking out. In 1974, fires burned 3.5 million hectares, and in 2003, another 2 million hectares were lost to fire. But the fires that started in 2019 are even worse:4.9 million hectares in New South Wales have burned already—and it’s only going to grow.
____19____For starters, as the world is getting warmer from climate change, so is Australia. 2019 was its hottest year on record, with parts of the country reaching 45 degrees Celsius in December. 2019 was also its driest—the places here in gray have seen historic droughts.____20____Throughout the year, other large-scale climate drivers affect Australia’s weather, and its likeliness to burn. One of the most influential is the Indian Ocean Dipole(偶极子), or the IOD. The IOD is a big temperature gradient that affects the surface water in the Indian Ocean, from the edge of Africa to the edge of Australia.
A. This is just heartbreaking.
B. So why is this fire season so awful
C. Their “fire season” varies across regions.
D. The fire season is awful because of the unknown reason.
E The ecosystem of the country needs to be improved.
F. These record-breaking bushfires in Australia have been started by the following.
