One morning I noticed a woman sitting alone at the bus stop. She seemed not to go to work hurriedly. She wasn't going anywhere as well. Was she waiting for the bus Did mall(商场)buses come this early when the stores wouldn't be open for hours As I drove by.l heard a voice saying, “Give her a bottle of water”.
“She looks like she is sleeping. Why would I wake her What is wrong with me What is so hard about doing the right thing It's just a bottle of water! ”
So I drove by her again and again. Finally, I pulled my car into a parking zone, stepping out with a bottle of water in one hand and a twenty-dollar bill in the other. Each step seemed to fill me with purpose and focus. No words can describe what happened between us at that moment. I thought I was bringing her a cold drink, but instead I was bringing her a hope she needed. We sat together for a while as she talked. She had a sad story to tell, but she was no longer sad. Before we parted, I grabbed all the cash I had in my purse and found more water in my car along with some snacks. We stood at the bus stop hugging and said our goodbyes.
I still have a thousand questions as to why I struggled to act. Why did it take me many circles around the mall and an argument with myself I once wavered between helping her and ignoring her. All I know for sure is that while walking toward that woman at the bus stop, a miracle happened.
There are opportunities for us to love every day. Maybe our doubts keep us from acting. Maybe we don't want to take the risk or be uncomfortable. That day, I learned how love answers when asked and how love both gives and receives.

International Women's Day is March 8. The first celebration was held in 1911, and the event was recognized by the United Nations starting in 1975.
It's a great time to think about the origin of the word "woman". Some people think the word “woman" is a compound(混合)of the words“womb”and“man". Not so. Rather,it's a compound of "wife" and "man", a combination that can be traced back to Old English. You see, when Old English was first being spoken in the 5th century AD, there were two distinct words for men and women: "wer" meant "adult male",and "wif” meant “adult female". There was a third word,“man", which simply meant "person"or "human being”. These words could be combined:“wer" plus“man"(in the form of "waepman")meant "adult male person" and“wif” plus"man”("wilman") meant “adult female person”.
Those middle forms,“wimnan"and "wommon"with the two M's in the middle, remind me of Noah Webster's efforts to simplify English spelling by suggesting changing the spelling "woman” to“wimmen" to have the spelling better match the pronunciation. He put that in his 1806 Compendious Dictionary o f the English Language, but it didn't become popular.
And the Old English word for "adult male" evolved into a simplified form. The compound word "weapman" melted into the simple word we use today: "man".
Maybe the lesson to take from all this is that the role of women in society has always been complex. Whatever the case, the word "woman" today was originally a compound of the Old English words for"woman” and “human being”.
8. Where can you find the first source of the word "woman"
A. In paragraph 1. B. In paragraph 2. C. In paragraph 3. D. In paragraph 4.
9. Why did Webster suggest changing the spelling "woman" to "wimmen"
A. To link the spelling to the pronunciation.
B. To keep up with the times more closely.
C. To satisfy the readers’ requests
D. To make it easy to pronounce.
10. When did the spelling "woman" started
A. By the 1600s. B. In the 5th century AD,
C. In 1809. D. By the Middle English period
11. What is the purpose of the author in writing the text
A To tell us the origin of Women's Day.
B. To tell us the history of the word "woman".
C. To stress the roles women are playing
D. To teach us the development of a language
D
Unlike human students, computers don't seem to get bored or frustrated when a lesson is too easy or too hard. But just like humans, they do better when a lesson plan is just right for their level of ing up with the right curriculum isn't easy, though, so computer scientists wondered what if they could make machines design their own
That's what researchers have done in several new studies to create artificial intelligence (AI) that can figure out how best to teach itself. The work could speed learning in self-driving cars and household robots, and it might even help handle previously unsolvable math problems. In one of the new experiments, an Al program tries to quickly reach a destination by navigating a 2D grid (网格) populated with solid blocks. The"agent" improves its abilities through a process called reinforcement learning, a kind of trial and error.
To help it navigate increasingly complex worlds, the researchers considered two ways in which it could draw the maps. One method randomly distributed blocks; with it, the Al didn't learn much. Another method remembered what the AI had struggled with in the past, and maximized difficulty accordingly. But that made the worlds too hard and sometimes even impossible to complete.
So the scientists created a setting, using a new approach they called PAIRED. First, they coupled their Al with a nearly identical one, which they called the antagonist (敌手). Then, they had a third AI design the world that was easy for the antagonist-but hard for the original protagonist (主角). That kept the tasks just at the edge of the protagonist's ability to solve. The designer used a neural network to learn its task over many trials. After training, the protagonist solved the problems offered to it successfully. The PAIRED approach is a clever way to get Al to learn, says Bart Selman, a computer scientist at Cornell University and president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.
12. Which of the following is a problem for computer scientists
A. Designing a suitable lesson plan for computers.
B. Asking human students to be active in a lesson.
C. Helping students to work out their owe curriculum.
D. Improving human students' computer skills quickly.
13. What did the two ways used by the researchers have in common
A. They were practical for the Al research. B. They both had their own weakness.
C. They were too hard for the AI to teach itself. D. They both made the AI struggle with the past.
14 What does Bart Selman think of the PAIRED approach
A. Difficult B. Simple. C. Promising D. Useless
15. What is the best title for the text
A. The Application of Artificial Intelligence B. The Impact of Artificial Intelligence
C. Artificial Intelligence Researches Navigation for Self-driving D. Artificial Intelligence Designs Lesson Plans for Itself

Nesmith rarely rejoined the others for reunion tours, leading many to believe he disliked the band and the show, something he steadfastly denied. For the Monkees’30th anniversary he persuaded the others to reunite to record a new album, “Justus,” for which all four composed the songs and played the instruments. He also rejoined the others for a brief tour and wrote and directed their 1997 TV reunion film, “Hey, Hey, It's the Monkees.”

Climate change in the coming decades could lead to an increase in cases of kidney stones(肾结石), according to a research by scientists in the United States.
A research team from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia knew from previous studies that high temperatures and dehydration (脱水) increase the risk of developing kidney stones. The researchers said incidence (发生率) of the condition has increased in the last 20 years.
The scientists created a model to estimate the impact of heat on future kidney stone presentations in the southeastern US state of South Carolina, which has a higher incidence of kidney stone disease. The model predicted that the number of cases will increase between 2.2 percent and 3.9 percent by the year 2089, depending on projected daily temperatures under two climate change circumstances. In the first case, greenhouse gas emissions (排放物) are cut to an middle level as humans shift to using lower-emissions sources of energy, while in the second, emissions continue at the current rate. Meanwhile, in the first case, average temperatures increase by 2.3℃ by 2100, compared with 3.6℃ in the second. These projections were taken from studies made by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
In comments with a news release, Gregory E Tasian, a urologist at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and senior author of the study, said, “While it is impossible to predict with certainty how future policies will slow or speed greenhouse gas emission and anthropogenic (人为的) climate change, and to know exactly what future daily temperatures will be, our analysis suggests that a warming planet will likely cause an increased burden of kidney stone disease on healthcare systems. As researchers, we have a duty to explore the burden of climate change on human health.”

Recently, Facebook has changed its corporate name to Meta. The company said it would better include what it does, as it broadens its reach beyond social media into areas like virtual reality (VR).The CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the existing brand could not possibly represent everything that they're doing today, let alone in the future. He also showed the company's plans to build a “metaverse (元宇宙)”—an online world where people can game, work and communicate in a virtual environment.
The term "metaverse" was invented by author Neal Stephenson in Snow Crash, a science fiction published in 1992.In the work, the metaverse is a sort of 3D virtual world. It's not simply a virtual reality game but is a persistent and shared virtual world. Or rather, the metaverse is a whole universe of shared virtual space seemingly linked together—you could, essentially, teleport (瞬移) between them.
Metaverse combined at the very least five technologies they are social media, online game, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and cryptocurrency. (加密货币).Those technologies will bring users to an interactive world. AR and VR are vital for Metaverse. VR serves to present the virtual world visually and then AR will provide the audio and sensors for people to be able to interact. With Metaverse, Facebook will offer not only a texting service but also a multi-perspective virtual touch that feels like a real thing.
Facebook said that it plans to create 10,000 jobs in Europe over the next five years to work on metaverse-related fields. The company also has introduced Oculus-branded virtual-reality headsets, and it joined with Ray-Ban to develop smart sunglasses that went on sale for $299. “Over time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company,” Mark Zuckerberg said. “I view this work as critical to our mission because delivering a sense of presence—like you’ re right there with another person—that's the highest goal of online social experiences.” he said.

On January 9, 2022, it was another cold morning. Temperatures reached lows of 17. 6 °F (-8℃). Dusti Talavera, a housewife in the south suburbs of Denver, was washing dishes in her kitchen when she witnessed a frightening scene outside her kitchen window. Glancing out her kitchen window, she noticed a group of young children playing on an icy pond. Moments later, the children fell through the ice.
Dusti’s heart raced as she saw the children fall through the ice, and she immediately grabbed her shoes to run outside. Submerged(淹没)in the freezing water, the children had lost the strength to stay above the surface. Their fingers were only visible as they desperately tried to grab onto the edges of the ice.
Without hesitation, Dusti placed her own life at risk by stepping on the thin, unstable ice to try to reach the three children. As she reached her hands out to grab them, she also broke the ice and fell into the 15-foot deep pond.
Dusti was first able to reach and pull out the 4-year-old girl and 11-year-old boy. She struggled to reach the last child, a 6-year-old girl. After hearing the loud screams for help, the young girl’s 16-year-old cousin suddenly arrived on scene. He threw Dusti a rope, which she used to drag herself and the young girl out of the water.
All three children were pulled out of the icy water as first responders arrived on scene. The 6-year-old girl was not breathing and had no pulse after being submerged in the icy water for two minutes. First responders performed life-saving CPR. Once the girl was able to breathe on her own, the EMTs (emergency medical technicians) rushed her to the hospital.

A study from the University of California, Davis is the first to document personality in golden-mantled ground squirrels, which are common across the western US and parts of Canada, The study found the squirrels show personality for four main aspects: boldness(大胆), aggressiveness, activity level, and sociability. The findings suggest that understanding how an animal’s personality influences the use of space is important for wildlife conservation.
The fact that ground squirrels have personalities may not seem surprising. But the scientific field of animal personality is relatively young, as is the recognition that there are ecological consequences of animal personalities. For instance, bolder, more aggressive squirrels may find more food or defend a larger area, but their risky behavior may also make them easily hurt by predators(捕食者)or accidents. Lead author Jaclyn Aliperti conducted the study while earning her PhD in ecology at UC Davis.
Scientists have been studying golden-mantled ground squirrels at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic, Colorado for decades. It was established as a long-term study site more than 30 years ago by Aliperti’s advisor, Dirk Van Vuren. Aliperti drew from this powerful data set for her study, while also starting a series of experiments there over the course of three summers to observe and quantify the squirrels’ personalities. Overall, the study, published in the journal Animal Behaviour, found that bolder squirrels had larger core areas where they concentrated their activities. Bold, active squirrels moved faster. Also, squirrels that were bolder, more aggressive and more active had greater access to habitats, such as rocks. The location of the habitat is important because it can provide a belter point for observing and evading predators. Interestingly, habitat is also associated with sociability.
“Animal personality is a hard science, but if it makes you relate to animals more, maybe people will be more interested in conserving them,” said Alipcrti.
8. What’s the significance of the findings in paragraph 1
A. To better protect wildlife.
B. To know more about space.
C. To observe squirrels’ behavior.

Livestream through channels such as Amazon Live and QVC is a popular way to sell goods online. In a session that lasts between 5 and 10 minutes, someone promotes a product. Viewers can then readily buy it by clicking on a link.
Researchers analyzed 99, 451 sales cases on a livestream selling platform and matched them with actual sales cases.
To determine the emotional expression of the salesperson, researchers used two deep learning models: a face detection model and an emotion classification model. The face detection model discovers the presence or absence of a face in a frame of a video stream. The emotion classifier then determines the probability that a face is exhibiting any of the six basic human emotions: happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, fear or disgust.
We wanted to see the effect of emotions expressed at different times in the sales cases, so we counted probabilities for each emotion for all 62 million frames in our database. We then combined these probabilities with other possible aspects that might drive sales —such as price and product characteristics—to judge the effect of emotions…
We found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, when salespeople convey more negative emotions—such as anger and disgust—the volume of sales went down. But we also found that a similar thing happened when the salespeople display high levels of positive emotions, such as happiness or surprise.
A likely explanation, based on our research, is that smile can be disgusting because it lacks true feelings and can reduce trust in the seller. A seller’s happiness may be taken as a sign that the seller is gaining interests at the customer’s expense.
We also found that the negative effects on sales are the strongest when people express emotions in the middle rather than at the beginning or the end of sale. A potential reason for this finding is that the middle is typically when the salesperson offers more details about the product, and it’s likely that viewers are turned off by emotions at this point.
12. What can we know about the livestream selling goods
A. It challenges the family business.
B. It only helps big company sell goods.
C. It is very convenient for the buyers.
D. It helps the sellers develop fixed expressions.
13. How did the researchers get the findings
A. By referring to a theory.
B. By concluding different views.
C. By giving some examples.
D. By analyzing previous data.
14. Why do customers dislike seller’s smiles during livestream
A. They hate seller’s look. B. They prefer complex emotions.
C. They feel cheated. D. They are so tired.
15. What’s the best title for the text
A. Livestreamers Sell Products Successfully
B. Expressions Affect Selling Products Online
C. Emotions and Faces: What’s the Difference

Melanie Perkins is co-founder of Canva, which allows users to create graphic designs for free in its simplest version, from social media posts to professional presentations.
The Canva journey started back in 2007, when Perkins was studying at the University of Western Australia. Al that time she was leaching students how to use programs like InDesign and Photoshop. Students found the programs hard to learn, and even harder to use. She imagined the future of design would be entirely different. It would be online and very simple.

But every time they got a hard question or a reason why people wouldn't invest, they stayed focused on what they could change. “The normal thing to do after your 100th,80th or even 20th'no' would be to stop, but you just have to insist trying," Melanie said.
A key person in getting Canva off the ground was Cameron Adams, an ex-Google employee who brought the technical expertise they needed.
Now Canva is a global business, but neither Perkins nor Obrecht considers that they have collected a fortune just for themselves. They want to do as much good as possible with their money.

As for Benjamin Franklin's kite-and-key experiment, most people are aware of the version in which Franklin "discovered" electricity when lightning struck his kite. However, several details about this experiment are unknown, including when and where it happened. Some historians even doubt whether it took place.
In fact, electricity had already been used for centuries before Franklin's experiment. Franklin lived from 1706 to 1790 when electricity was understood as the interaction between two different fluids(流体),which Franklin later referred to as “plus" and “minus”.
It was unknown before Franklin's experiment whether lightning was electrical, though some scientists, including Franklin, had guessed just that. Franklin was particularly interested in this because lightning strikes had caused disastrous fires where houses were made of wood. Actually, by creating a lightning rod(避雷针),Franklin helped to protect wooden buildings from being struck by lightning.
A few publications reported the experiment. In 1771 Franklin referred to the experiment in his autobiography, and other colleagues also wrote about it. Notably, the experiment appeared in “History and Present Status of Electricity” by Joseph Priestley. Priestley heard about the kite-and-key experiment from Franklin himself around 15 years after the fact, and in his book, he wrote it occurred in June 1752.
However, in a book by Tom Tucker, he noted Franklin's description of his experiment was phrased in the future conditional tense: “As soon as any of the Thunder Clouds come over the Kite, the pointed Wire will draw the Electric Fire from them. . . ” Franklin could have simply been saying that the experiment could, in theory, be performed. Given that his statement has a few missing details-Franklin didn't list a date, time or location, for example-it's possible that Franklin did not perform the experiment himself.
However, some historians remain unconvinced that the experiment wasn't carried out. Franklin experts such as biographer Carl Van Doren, also point to the fact that Priestley specified the month in which Franklin performed his experiment, suggesting that must have given him precise details directly.
28. What was Franklin's achievement

C. He thought of ways to control fire. D. He improved the structure of homes.

Road trips can seem extra-long when someone else's unpleasant music fills the car. What if you could listen to only your music without headphones and no one else would hear it Now researchers in France are working to deliver such personal sound zones that adapt as conditions in your car change.
Why bother Headphones are good at controlling what you hear, but they can be uncomfortable and even damage your hearing.
Personal listening zones inside a car could let you hear well without having to drown out other sounds with high volume. They also would bring many new possibilities. Everyone in a car could listen to their own audio privately. GPS alerts(警报) could go only to the driver. Passengers could make phone calls without being overheard.
Engineers are working to create these personal sound zones using multiple loudspeakers. They don't all broadcast the same signal, but the signals are coordinated(协调的). A listener whose head is in some “sweet spot" hears high-quality sound. But as one gets farther from the sweet spot, the sound diminishes. That's because sound waves from different loudspeakers interact to cancel out each other's sound.
According to Patricia Davies, an engineer studying sound, creating quiet zones anywhere in a three-dimensional space, like the inside of a vehicle, is challenging. One reason is that sound waves are sensitive. Changes in temperature can change how fast the waves travel. So can the number of people in the car and other factors. A small change in even one of these can have a big impact.
Still, it's easier to create personal sound zones in cars than in other spaces. In a car, what's interesting is that we know where the people are. The loudspeakers can be built right into the headrests.
Personal sound zones will only catch on if they work as well as headphones. If you turn on the air conditioner or pick up a passenger, the sound quality can't go downhill. With this in mind, Melon and his team recently modified an existing system.
32. What is manly talked about in paragraph 3
A. The popularity of personal listening zones.
B. The advantages of personal listening zones.
C. The safety offered by personal listening zones.
D. The differences among sounds with high volume.

A. Becomes lower. B. Travels faster.
C. Gels sweeter. D. Sounds nicer.

B. Sound waves are easy to be affected.
C. The places of loudspeakers are fixed.
D. The temperatures of passengers are changeable.
35. What might be talked about next
A. What the team did. B. Who made up the team.

I grew up in Michigan and have loved boats since I was young. I'd go out on my dad's fishing boat, and every birthday I'd get a tiny boat with a viewing window. In Michigan,we're surrounded by lakes and I soon discovered that I loved diving and even skipped school days for the coast.
Three years ago,I successfully put forward an idea of running glass-bottom boat tours to my husband. We headed out on the Cheboygan River and Lake Huron, running five trips every day over summer. We sailed past lots of places of significance, with a historian on board explaining the history. We often scanned the river to see what we could find.
One weekend while diving, I managed to find a giant shell. Then I saw a green bottle on top of a fishbed and I picked it up. I swam to my boat, took a photo and then opened the bottle. It had paper inside. I unfolded the paper and saw the date -November 1926. The note read,“Return this paper to George Morrow. " It gave me a big surprise to have found it.
We made sure to keep the paper safe. I kept the bottle, Before leaving the shore, I posted a picture on my Facebook page and didn't expect what followed
The next morning, my phone blew up with messages. While I was driving home, I got a phone call from Michele Primeau. She told me she was George Morrow's daughter. I didn't believe her at first. She said her dad would float notes in bottles when he went on vacation or hid them in walls when redecorating. She worked out he had posted this one on his 18th birthday.
In autumn, Michele came to visit. She brought some of his writing and the handwriting matched. She insisted I keep the message and the bottle. It now sits in a glass case in my shop. That Facebook post now has 87,000 likes.
In a hard year, the discovery has brought pure joy. For a diver, this feels like a lifetime achievement.

My mother's phone does strange things. It rings in the middle of the night, and by the time she gets to it, there's no one there. The last time we were talking about this, my mother said,"It never used to happen with the old phone. "
“You mean the rotary(转动的)phone The black one You still have that "
“Oh yeah,I have it. "
We had two of them. One was at the bar downstairs and the other was near the kitchen table upstairs. When the phone rang, I ran to answer it. I wanted to answer it. Someone somewhere thought of me, or they needed me. They took the time to look up my number, sit down and talk to me.
I remember rolling the phone cord between my fingers as I talked, just like some other girls. Sometimes, my eyes would dance as my brain drew the story a friend was telling. I wasn't going anywhere or doing anything because I was already somewhere and doing something important. I was listening and connecting. I was saying yes to this conversation and saying no to anything else.
When landline was the only line, long-distance charges used to kick in at the city limits. My mother would often say," You pay by the word, so pick a few and say them fast. " My parents used to get up at 4 in the morning to call relatives back home. My memories of those conversations are warm and loving. In those few moments, there was no one else more important. That black phone was their only way to be together.
Now we take it for granted that we can talk to anyone anywhere. Yet we forget that making that call is about connection. It's about human hearts thirsting for their lifeblood.
So if you are planning to call someone to talk, cry, celebrate or whatever, then call them. But show them that talking to them is more valuable than anything else. Devote yourself to the phone call for 5 minutes,or 10 or 60. Give yourself over to it. Fill people's hearts and let them fill yours.

A. She was waiting for calls from her relatives.
B. She wished to cut down on their phone bill.

Fashion designers are always looking for new materials to work with. Lately, it's all about environment-friendly materials - recycled tires, mushrooms, even pineapple fibers! What if you want such a pair of shoes Thaely is here to help.
This sneaker brand out of Dubai wants to fight the growing problem of plastic pollution. Led by 23-year-old Indian businessman Ashay Bhave, they may have found a winning approach; making shoes out of plastic grocery bags. "Thaely means"plastic bag" in the Hindi language.
"I was looking to create footwear that is cost-effective and safe for the environment," Bhave said in an interview with a newspaper. "I needed to come up with something that uses recycled plastic without creating any more plastic waste. "Plastic bags were the perfect solution. He said five trillion plastic bags are used around the world each year. "I was motivated to find a solution to this problem," Bhave said.
That solution was the fiber called ThaelyTex. Made entirely from plastic bags, the material looks and feels like leather. That sounds promising. Better yet, the production process requires no additional chemicals and produces no poisonous by-products. The result is a smart-looking pair of white low-top sneakers.
Bhave wouldn't expose the full process for making ThaelyTex, but he said that each pair of shoes was made from up to 15 plastic bags and 22 plastic bottles. Where do they get the materials Bhave told Elle that was the hardest part. "The biggest challenge we faced was right at the first step of acquiring the plastic bags. "
Finally, they got help from TrioTap Technologies, a waste management plant. Bhave said they offered to collect the bags and also process them into ThaelyTex.
So far, it seems like things are falling into place. There are already hundreds of pre-orders in place. It sounds like they have some plans for the future. "We have a few more colors coming up," said Bhave. They also plan to put out a high-top model and bring in a line of clothing. Let's hope their growth is also friendly to the environment.
Why did Bhave choose to make shoes out of plastic bags
A. To set a new footwear trend.
B. To test new materials for footwear.
C. To reduce the use of plastic bags in his home country.
D. To use recycled. plastic in an environment-friendly way.
33. What was the most difficult task for Bhave
A. Having a few more colors for Thaely.
B. Processing plastic bags into ThaelyTex.
