A few years ago, I was giving a presentation to the CEO of a company. Through the entire meeting time, the CEO sat at the conference table with his arms tightly crossed without a smile. I was sure that he was not satisfied, but later his assistant told me her boss was impressed with my presentation. Suddenly, I realized that, it was his usual behavior. ___36___ Here are three more: ignoring the context, finding meaning in a single gesture, comparing with a proper culture.
First, context is king. The same nonverbal gestures can take on totally different meanings in different contexts. You can’t really make sense of someone’s nonverbal message unless you understand the circumstances behind it. For example, if you yawn in a staff meeting because you were up early for an international business call, let people know why you’re tired. ___37___
Then, people are constantly trying to evaluate your state of mind by monitoring your body language. But often they will assign meaning to a single nonverbal gesture. Generally speaking, people take more notice of any sign that indicates you’re in a bad mood and not to be approached. ___38___ So, you may be more comfortable standing with your arms folded across your chest, but others judge that single gesture as resistant and unapproachable.
When I talk about culture, I’m referring to a set of shared values that a group of people hold. ___39___ More importantly, they are the kind of criteria by which people judge others. We all have cultural biases that regard some nonverbal behaviors as normal and right and others as strange or wrong. What’s proper and correct in one culture may be ineffective or even rude in another.
___40___ Understanding them, and trying not to make the same ones, will help you display your nonverbal ability.
A. Such values affect how members of the group think and act.
B. Nonverbal signals are very common in our daily life.
C. These are people’s most common mistakes when they read your body language.
D. As with me, when people don’t know your usual behavior they can easily jump to the wrong conclusion.
E. Without this context, you’ll look like you’re just bored.
F. If they don’t know the context, embarrassment will appear.
G. This is because the human brain pays more attention to negative messages than it does to positive ones.

If you recently closed on a new house, you probably started house hunting in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, hosting a housewarming in 2021 is probably going to be harder to pull off. To help, we’ve cooked up a few ideas of how to hold a pandemic-era housewarming party.
The basics: Safe
Anything that you do during the pandemic should follow some simple rules. ____36____
For example: wash your hands a lot, wear a mask in public and maintain social distancing of at least six feet from people.
That last one makes a housewarming party almost impossible. Please keep these safety measures in mind as you read on.
IDEA 1: Use the Zoom (云视频会议软件) call.
If we suggested having a housewarming party via Zoom one and a half years ago, our editors would have thought we were crazy. ____37____ Zoom is old-hat at this point, but we still sort of like Zoom calls. They gave us a chance to stay close with people we couldn’t see in person. ____38____
This idea starts by creating a room-to-room video tour of your home, showing your new place and highlighting why you’re so excited to be living there.
IDEA 2: Take it outside.
____39____ But now is not the time to have a large gathering indoors. Just do it outside. If you have a yard, set up separate stations for barbecuing and for friends to keep at a safe distance. You could even have a local restaurant to cater it with takeout.
Lastly: ____40____
When the health risks are over, plan to hold a proper get-together, remembering that you were creative enough to find a way to celebrate the purchase of your new home during a global pandemic.
A. We get it.
B. You know the ones.
C. Today, not so much.
D. Recall it when possible.
E. The same can be true for your housewarming event.
F. For some, a party isn’t a party unless it’s a big one.
G. For entertainment you can’t get better at social distancing.

Ask yourself, what do you want to get out of walking aside from the health benefits Do you want to meet other people ____18____Get out into the wilderness or explore a city Knowing your priorities will help you decide on the type of walk you want to do.
If making friends and socializing is your goal, call up your friends and schedule walks with them.____19____Go online and look up your local mall or shopping center. Many malls have groups that come every day, or every weekend, to “walk the mall”. These groups are always happy to include one more walker!

Nearly any city you can think of offers a walking tour with maps provided by the tourist bureau. A. See new places
B. Head to a new city.
C. It’s kind to our bodies and great for our waistlines.
D. Everyone loves walking and you’re no exception.
E. Ask your friends where they like to walk and go there.

D 37. E 38. G 39. A 40. C
根据上文“A few years ago, I was giving a presentation to the CEO of a company. Through the entire meeting time, the CEO sat at the conference table with his arms tightly crossed without a smile. I was sure that he was not satisfied, but later his assistant told me her boss was impressed with my presentation. Suddenly, I realized that, it was his usual behavior.(几年前,我在给一家公司的首席执行官做演讲。 突然,我意识到,这是他的惯常行为)”以及后文“Here are three more: ignoring the context, finding meaning in a single gesture, comparing with a proper culture.(这里还有三个原因:忽略上下文,在一个手势中找到意义,与适当的文化相比较)”可知,该句承接上文,与前面作者的亲身经历紧密联系,并与后面的“Here are three more”构成承接关系,引出另外三个对肢体语言产生误解的原因。
根据上文“First, context is king. The same nonverbal gestures can take on totally different meanings in different contexts. You can’t really make sense of someone’s nonverbal message unless you understand the circumstances behind it. For example, if you yawn in a staff meeting because you were up early for an international business call, let people know why you’re tired.(首先,语境很重要。
根据上文“Then, people are constantly trying to evaluate your state of mind by monitoring your body language. But often they will assign meaning to a single nonverbal gesture. Generally speaking, people take more notice of any sign that indicates you’re in a bad mood and not to be approached.(然后,人们不断尝试通过监控你的肢体语言来评估你的心理状态。 选项中的pay more attention to、negative messages 分别与上句中的take more notice、bad mood and not to be approached对应。
根据上文“When I talk about culture, I’m referring to a set of shared values that a group of people hold.(当我谈论文化时,我指的是一群人持有的一套共同价值观)”可知,本句成绩上文说明拥有共同价值观的作用:影响团队成员的思维和行为方式。 故选A。
根据后文“Understanding them, and trying not to make the same ones, will help you display your nonverbal ability.(理解它们,尽量避免重复,这将有助于你展示自己的非言语能力)”可知,本句是文章最后一段,对上文所叙述的内容进行概括总结,“These are people’s most common mistakes”不仅起到承上的作用,又对后文起到了启下的作用。下句中的them和ones即选项中提到的most common mistakes。

根据上文“Anything that you do during the pandemic should follow some simple rules.”(在大流行期间,你做的任何事情都应该遵循一些简单的规则。)以及下文“For example: wash your hands a lot, wear a mask in public and maintain social distancing of at least six feet from people.”(例如:勤洗手,在公共场合戴口罩,与人保持至少6英尺的社交距离。)
根据上文“If we suggested having a housewarming party via Zoom one and a half years ago, our editors would have thought we were crazy.”(如果我们在一年半前通过Zoom提议举办一个乔迁派对,我们的编辑会认为我们疯了。)
根据上文“They gave us a chance to stay close with people we couldn’t see in person.”(他们给了我们一个机会,让我们可以和那些我们不能亲自见到的人保持密切联系。)
根据下文“But now is not the time to have a large gathering indoors.”(但现在不是在室内举行大型聚会的时候。)根据连接词But可知,空处与上文为转折,而F项“For some, a party isn’t a party unless it’s a big one.”(对有些人来说,除非是盛大的派对,否则就不算派对。)
根据最后一段“When the health risks are over, plan to hold a proper get-together, remembering that you were creative enough to find a way to celebrate the purchase of your new home during a global pandemic.”(当健康危机结束后,计划举行一次适当的聚会,记住你有足够的创造力找到了一种方式来庆祝在全球流行病期间购买新房子。)

Ask yourself, what do you want to get out of walking aside from the health benefits Get out into the wilderness or explore a city 故选A。
If making friends and socializing is your goal, call up your friends and schedule walks with them.(如果交朋友和社交是你的目标,打电话给你的朋友,安排和他们一起散步。
