When a humpback whale began playing with Nan Hauser like a toy, she feared the worst. The 50,000-pound mammal swam toward the marine biologist and began to push her forward.
Nan had been deep-sea diving for 28 years, but had never known a whale like this. It seemed to keep throwing Nan on its head and back. Most of all, it wanted to keep Nan under its pectoral fin (胸鳍). For ten tense minutes, the whale lifted Nan out of the ocean. She tried to keep cool and calm, but she was aware that at any moment, the whale could break her bones or organs. She smelt death.
Nan believed the encounter would not end well. Fortunately for her, it did! The whale left her alone long enough for her to surface and return to her research vessel.
Onboard the boat, she saw a 15-foot-long tiger shark swimming quietly on the other side of the whale. The heroic humpback wasn’t playing with her or attacking her. It was protecting her from a deadly predator. Nan later learned that at the same time, another humpback whale was busy keeping the shark at bay. She was moved to tears.
In another story, biologist Adam Warwick saved a black bear from drowning.

Realizing the bear would drown, Adam jumped into the water immediately. He got in front of the bear and began splashing and shouting to try to make him turn around. As she removes the fish from the oven, smells of garlic, pepper, and lemon fill the community kitchen. For Glenda Andrew, the smells bring back memories of family meals, community events and religious get-togethers.
She brings the hot meals for free to people in an area called Preston, as well as surrounding communities in northwestern England. The area has recorded some of the highest numbers of coronavirus cases in Britain.
She uses the best food she can find. "They're worth it," she said. "They’ve taught us so many things when we firstly moved here." In addition to food, the volunteers offer a bit of human contact.
The loneliness of the past year has been painful for many of the seniors. When the hot meals arrive, they get to talk with the volunteers and share stories. Sylius Toussaint is 81 and came from the island nation of Dominica in 1960, who said talking with the volunteers helps him as much as the food does."They say 'hello' and give you a meal, and maybe for just a few seconds at least you see someone new; someone you haven't seen all week," Toussaint says, smiling at his wife. "If you are on your own, it is so nice to see a fresh face — especially bringing gifts."
Britain's COVID-19 vaccination program may soon mean the quarantine will be eased. But Andrew wants to keep making and sharing her island meals. In the future, she said, she hopes to find a place where the community can meet and spend time together. But for now, the volunteers plan to continue to connect with the community through food.
4. Why does Glenda Andrew provide free meals for people in that area

In Japan, some workers who regularly drink beer at the end of the day are giving their livers a rest by turning to beer that is free, or nearly free of alcohol. The liver is the organ that works to remove alcohol from the body. Masuda, one of beer lovers, said he is paying more attention to his health now that he is older.
Asahi is a large beverage company in Japan, which made 20 percent more money from low-alcohol beer in 2020 compared to the year before. Kirin is another company that makes things to drink. It saw sales grow by 10 percent last year and expects another increase this year.
The increase in sales of non-alcoholic beer might be the result of many Japanese people spending more time at home. In the past, they would order beers together while going out. More people are trying to stay healthy as well. Also, fewer people are drinking beer, as wine and other alcoholic drinks become more popular. But the new interest in low-alcohol beer has helped the beverage industry in Japan.
In recent years, many companies started making non-alcoholic beers. They caught on in places like Australia and Germany but not in Japan – until this year.
The chief of Suntory, another large beverage company in Japan, said people only responded to non-alcoholic beer advertising when the product started to taste better. Many people agree that today's non-alcoholic beers taste better than they used to. Asahi's "Beery" has very little alcohol. But it is supposed to have more taste than earlier versions of low-alcohol beer because of a new way of removing the alcohol. The company plans to offer more low-alcohol beers in coming years.
Kazuo Matsuyama is marketing chief for Asahi, who said most beer companies used to advertise to people who had a drink every day. That was about 20 million people. But there are about 80 million people in Japan between the ages of 20 and 60." But now we need to look at others." Matsuyama said.
8. Why do some Japanese workers turn to beers free of alcohol nowadays
A. To appreciate a tasty flavor. B. To ensure a healthier lifestyle.

C Published statistics.
D. Public opinions.
10. What’s Australian’s attitude to non-alcoholic beers
A. Enthusiastic. B. Indifferent. C. Critical. D. Objective.

Scientists say baby sharks are at risk of being born smaller and without the energy they need to survive because of warming oceans from climate change. Scientists studied epaulette sharks, which live off Australia and New Guinea. They found warmer conditions sped up the sharks' growing process, which meant the sharks were born earlier.
John Mandelman, chief scientist of the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life said the findings could be used in the study of other sharks.
Mandelman said it is widely believed that epaulette sharks are "hardy," or able to survive difficult conditions. "What it means is that this species is more vulnerable than we thought, and this could be true of other sharks," he added.
The scientists studied 27 sharks using the New England Aquarium's reproduction program. Some were raised in average summer water temperatures. Others were raised in higher temperatures. They found the sharks raised in warmer temperatures weighed much less than those raised in average temperatures.
One study this year found that worldwide numbers of oceanic sharks and rays dropped more than 70 percent between 1970 and 2018. Overfishing is a main concern, while climate change and pollution also threaten sharks.
Carolyn Wheeler, a doctoral student at the University of Massachusetts Boston and the author of the epaulette shark study, said while all the sharks survived, those raised in warmer temperatures were not strong enough to survive for long in the wild. She added that if the sharks are born smaller than usual "they are probably going to have to start looking for food sooner — and they're going to have less time to adjust to their surroundings."
Mariah Pfleger, an ocean scientist said the study should serve as a warning to ocean governing agencies that careful supervision is needed to prevent the loss of more sharks." This study further shows that sharks will not be immune to a warming ocean," Pfleger added.
12. What does the author want to tell us in paragraph1
A. Oceans get warmer because of climate change.
B. Climate change affects sharks’ growing process.
C. New finding on short life span of sharks is released.
D. Sharks are at risk of dying out.
13. What do we know about epaulette sharks
A. They are sensitive to climate change.
B. They can survive any difficult situation.
C. Climate change has little effect on them.
D. The situation is serious even for them.

A. Overfishing and ocean pollution should be stopped.
B. Sharks have to adjust themselves to warmer surroundings.
C. Measures should be taken to prevent climate change.
D. The number of sharks will continue dropping.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Baby Sharks Struggle to Survive in Warming Ocean
B. Whether Sharks Can Survive or Not Is a Question
C. Climate Change Threatens Marine Organisms

In the winter of 1910, Dr. Wu Lien-Teh stepped off a train in the northern Chinese city of Harbin. He was there to solve a medical mystery, at great personal risk. Over the past few months, an unknown disease had swept along the railways of northeast China, killing 99.9% of its victims. The Qing Imperial court had sent the Cambridge-educated Dr. Wu north to stop the epidemic.
When Dr Wu arrived in Harbin on Christmas Eve, 1910, he carried little in the way of medical instruments and had only one assistant. One of Wu' s first acts upon arrival was to set up special quarantine(隔离) units and to order lockdowns to stop infected persons from traveling and spreading the disease. He had teams check households for possible cases, and even managed to convince authorities to completely close the railways in the early weeks of 1911. Of particular concern was the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday, which had become a great annual migration of people traveling across the country to see their families.
Thanks to Dr. Wu's efforts, the number of plague victims began to die down, and by March 1, 1911, the epidemic was fully contained. The pneumonic (肺炎的) plague outbreak of 1910-1911 lasted nearly four months, affected five provinces and six major cities, and accounted for over 60,000 deaths. It is clear that without the brave and decisive actions taken by Dr. Wu, it could have been much worse. Had the epidemic gone unchecked, allowing holiday rail passengers to spread the disease to the rest of China could have meant a catastrophic loss of life and possibly a global health crisis.
In April 1911, Dr. Wu chaired an International Plague Conference in Shenyang, attended by scientists from 11 counties including the United States, Great Britain, Russia, Japan and France. They praised Dr. Wu for his handling of the 1910-1911 outbreak. For a time, Dr. Wu was the world's most famous plague fighter, a title be defended in a malaria epidemic in China in 1919, and a return of plague in 1921.

A. To take personal risk.
B. To end an epidemic.
C. To provide medical education.
D. To investigate the number of victims.
25. Which of Dr Wu's acts stopped the disease from spreading nationwide
A. Setting up special quarantine units around the country.
B. Treating infected persons with his medical instruments.
C. Checking households himself for possible cases.

Are you wondering whether it’s worth going for a little jog Don’t hesitate, and get your sports shoes on. A new study shows that proper running lowers the risk of death before the normal time.
In an analysis of 14 previous studies from the US and Denmark, the group of researchers from institutes in Australia and Finland concluded that increasing running participation would probably lead to substantial improvements in population health and longevity. The studies involved 232,149 participants over time periods ranging from 5. 5 to 35 years.
On the whole, people running any distance were associated with a 27% lower risk of death from all causes than those who did not, the study shows. Running was also related with a 30% and 23% lower risk of death from cardiovascular(心血管的)disease and cancer, respectively.
Previous studies had concluded “inconsistent findings” about whether running could lower the risk of premature death, according to the researchers. Lead researcher Jim White, a professor at Victoria University in Melbourne, told CNN: “Our recent findings may encourage physically inactive individuals to take up running and those who already run to keep on doing it.”
He added that doctors may be encouraged by our findings to promote running as a part of “lifestyle medicine”. In their paper, which will be published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the researchers say health professionals are sometimes wary of promoting running because vigorous(剧烈的)use of it has been linked with sudden heart death.
Jim and his team deny this by noting that the benefit of running outweighs the risk. However, they did say advice should be given on a case-by-case basis, as running might not be appropriate for everyone. Although running has a clear health benefit, the researchers point out that higher “doses” of running may not reduce the risk of premature death further. According to the WHO’s guidelines, adults aged between 18 and 64 should take 150 minutes of gentle exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week.
28. What did the new study focus on
A. The benefit of jog. B. People’s lifestyles.
C. People’s living conditions. D. The risk of jog.

A The risk of exercising vigorously.
B. The reasons why people should keep running.
C. The suggestions on running appropriately.

One of the biggest ideas in computer technology is cloud computing. The system is changing the way information is kept. It uses a group of computers or servers to store information instead of one. The data floats around like clouds instead of being saved on any computer. It means computers can be smaller than ever and store practically unlimited amounts of information. No longer are bulky computers needed because all the information is in the clouds.
So when will cloud computing start affecting the way you use computers You may not have noticed, but it already has. Facebook, Amazon, Twitter and many other sites all run on cloud computing. Cloud computing is really useful. You can use it to access the same file at work at home or in other countries on different computers. There may even be environmental benefits, too. Gmail, which uses cloud computing, says that the system saves a lot of energy.
However, potential problems do exist such as losing information and not being able to access certain files when the internet is down. Also, some companies charge fees for their cloud computing services. Another major problem is security. If all your Information is out there in the cloud and not safely stored on your own computer or laptop, it may be possible for other people to access it. More and more of our personal information is in danger of being stolen. Therefore, it is important to be careful and to find ways of making the information secure.
More and more companies are starting up and offering cloud computing. Will the company be reliable What will happen to your data if the company goes out of business There are real worries. Even so, for those interested in computing technology, one thing is for certain ---the future in the clouds is going to be very exciting.
32. How does the author describe the data
A. It needs only a single server.
B. It is a cloud floating around computers.
C. It makes computers become smaller.
D. It improves the computer’s function.
33. What can we learn from the passage
A. Cloud computing will come into use soon.
B. Files will be entered when the Internet is down.
C. Personal information may be lost if not kept properly.
D. Companies will enjoy free cloud computing services.
34. What’s the author’s attitude towards cloud computing
A. Worried. B. Positive.
C Unclear. D. Cautious.
35. The purpose of the passage is .
A. to introduce cloud computing to us
B. to talk about the way computers change
C. to warn us to be careful to use computers
D. to tell us how to access information on other computers
