Kensey Jones teaches a second grade class at St. Michael’s Episcopal School in Richmond. In her spare time, she volunteers at Richmond Animal Care & Control (RACC), and she recently found a way to help the animals find their way home just a little bit faster.
Kensey spoke with Christie Peters, director of RACC, who also happens to be the mother of one of her students. They cooked up an idea to introduce the class to a rescue dog named Snow, then give them the task of writing persuasive stories and making drawings from the dogs’ perspectives(角度). These works would then be placed on the shelter animal’s cage.
“I’m a very cute dog, ” one child wrote for a dog called Famous Amos. “Don’t you love my name Do you love me I hope you do because then you can adopt me!”
Each of the drawings is 100 percent unique as well as being incredibly cute. Christie knew the project would be a hit as soon as she heard Kensey’s idea. “The class was working on persuasive writing, and they wrote pieces as if they were speaking on behalf of the shelter dog trying to get adopted, ” she said. “I said, ‘Let’s do it.’”
“I’m so proud to see my students write amazing persuasive paragraphs through the eyes of one of their RACC dogs, ” Kensey explained.
After meeting Snow, the kids were allowed to choose an adoptable dog from the list of those available at RACC. The kids were then told of the dog’s unique personalities, likes, and dislikes. In the end, the students wrote about 24 stories!
So far, eight animals have gone home after their new owners read their letters! Kensey and Christie both hope other schools will find a similar way to partner with their own local shelters to help homeless pets, too.

Vostok Station is a Russian weather station in Antarctica, which is widely known for having the coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth: -89. 2℃. But last Friday, Vostok set another record, this time for its warmest March temperature ever: -18℃, 15℃ warmer than average.
Other areas in Antarctica were even hotter. A nearby weather station was 37℃ higher than average. Some places here were expected to be as much as 50℃ warmer than normal.
Scientists said, “At this time of year, Antarctica is losing 25 minutes of daylight every day, and should be getting colder instead of warmer. ” But an “atmospheric river” of warm, wet air hit Antarctica last Tuesday. This kind of weather pattern isn’t that unusual. But once it got to Antarctica, it was blocked from leaving by a high pressure system called a “pressure dome”. Scientists say it’s too early to say if this event was caused by climate change. But they say they’re watching carefully to see if this is a one-time event or part of a new pattern.
On the other hand, winter is just now ending at the North Pole, which means the sun hasn’t been shining there for about six months. But that hasn’t stopped the Arctic from having a heat wave. Temperatures in the Arctic are about 14℃ higher than normal. Some areas have seen temperatures as much as 28℃ above average. Scientists are paying great attention to the weather here. In fact, the Arctic is warming two to three times faster than the rest of the planet, and warming events seem increasingly common in recent years. There are concerns that this pattern will continue and that the melting(融化) of ice here will increase.
Scientists explained, this time, the very specific cause for the Arctic heat wave: a “bomb cyclone”, a storm that gathers great strength very quickly. This one formed over the east coast of North America, and headed north. The pressure inside this storm system fell sharply, pulling an atmospheric river of wet warm air toward the North Pole.
8. What has Vostok Station done lately
A. It has moved to the coldest place in the world.
B. It has teamed up with a nearby weather station.
C. It’s monitored an extremely abnormal temperature.
D. It’s finished the temperature records for Antarctica.
9. What have scientists changed concerning the temperatures in Antarctica
A. Their expectations about its climate system.
B. Their impression of the Antarctic seasons.
C. Their ideas of forming a pressure dome.
D. Their attitude toward climate change.
10. Why are scientists watching the weather in the Arctic closely
A. Its winter ends earlier than usual.
B. Warming events occur more frequently.
C. The melting of ice is more serious this year.
D. The temperature is higher than that in Antarctica.
11. What did scientists think of the Arctic heat wave this time
A. Controllable.
B. Predictable.
C. Adaptable.
D. Understandable.

Before Starlink, a new satellite Internet system from the company SpaceX, most satellite Internet service was based on satellites that constantly remained above one point on Earth-over Chicago, for example, which means that signals from farther away need to travel a long distance, causing delays. Starlink has a web of satellites moving constantly in a low orbit around the Earth. Because the satellites are closer, the speeds are faster, which makes the service better for things that need to happen without delays, like holding meetings over the Internet.
To get on the Internet with Starlink, users need a terminal(终端). The terminal tracks the web of satellites and communicates with them to provide Internet service. The service works as long as the terminal is placed where it can “see” the sky.
Starlink currently works in 31 countries, but SpaceX plans to expand the service to cover the whole world. The clearest need for this kind of service is in remote areas. Starlink terminals also work from moving objects, so SpaceX is also planning to offer service on transportation, like planes, trains, and boats.
Starlink currently has over 2, 100 satellites in orbit around Earth. SpaceX has permission from the US government to launch 12, 000 satellites, and it has asked for permission to launch as many as 30, 000 more.
Astronomers have complained that Starlink satellites are causing light pollution. This makes it harder to study things in space with satellites getting in the way. SpaceX has worked to abate the light from Starlink satellites. But scientists say the satellites still make their work harder. This will get worse as more satellites fill the skies.
There are also concerns about Starlink satellites crashing into other satellites or spacecraft. In 2019, a European satellite had to move to avoid coming close to Starlink satellites. Still, Starlink has been useful in emergencies. When the island nation of Tonga lost Internet service after a volcano erupted in January, 2022, SpaceX was able to provide temporary service using Starlink.
12. What does paragraph 1 focus on about Starlink
A. Its developments.
B. Its history.
C. Its advantages.
D. Its origin.
13. Which word best describes SpaceX when it comes to Starlink
A. Cautious.
B. Ambitious.
C. Generous.
D. Controversial.
14. What does the underlined word “abate” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Ignore.
B. Protect.
C. Discover.
D. Reduce.
15. Why is Tonga’s volcanic eruption mentioned

Kumar is ten years old and works with his father in New Delhi. Every morning, while carrying plastic bags on his shoulders, he runs into children walking to school, ashamed at not being in a school uniform like them. Kumar is one of India’s five million school dropouts. These are the children of villagers who moved to New Delhi but end up living in slums (贫民窟). Many of them, like Kumar’s father, can’t afford to send their children to school. Others are not able to provide birth certificates for their children, which are necessary for school admission.
However, two yellow buses — equipped as mobile schools with teaching materials such as books, whiteboard, pens and toys are helping them. They are part of the government’s project which started in 2003. The books and school bags are free. Every morning, the yellow bus mobile schools arrive near selected slums. “If the children can’t go to school, we have to take the school to them, to their doorstep,” said Sharma, a mobile school teacher. Sharma said that at first parents hesitated to send their children to the mobile school because they were afraid that their children would be cheated. It took the teachers a long time to build their confidence.
Financed by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) in India the mobile schools project has helped reduce the number of dropouts from 25 million to 5 million. The children are proud because the mobile school comes specially for them. It has changed their lives and given them hope. After joining the bus school, eleven-year-old Meena is very happy with her new life. Although she is young, she understands that education is the key to escaping the poverty. So impressed by her progress, other mothers were convinced to let their daughters attend the mobile school.
The mobile school teachers provide children with primary education to get them up to the level and then they go on with their studies in public schools.

Ukraine has reported that forest fires have broken out near the site of the world’s worst nuclear accident.
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP) is about 100 kilometers away from Kyiv, Ukraine. In 1986, the CNPP had the worst nuclear accident in history. A series (系列) of mistakes and accidents caused an explosion and a huge fire, which burned for nine days. As a result of the disaster, entire cities had to be cleared. Over 100, 000 people had to leave their homes forever. A 2, 600-square-kilometer area around the CNPP was set apart as the “Chernobyl Exclusion Zone” to keep people away from the radioactive pollution.
Much of the land in the Zone is forest and grassland. Radioactivity breaks down slowly over time, so the radiation has dropped some by now. The radioactive pollution has become part of the plants and the dirt in the area. But on April 4, fires broke out in the Zone, which can give off the radioactive pollution back into the air. Once the pollution is in the air, it can be spread by the wind. Over the last 10 days, hundreds of fire fighters have been struggling against the flames. One fire came close to the CNPP. Keeping fires away from the plant is important because dangerous and poisonous material is still stored there.
Fighting the fire was much more challenging than normal because of the radiation dangers. In some places, fire fighters dug ditches (壕沟) to stop the fire from spreading, however, most of their efforts went into pouring water from the air since they couldn’t do the same in most areas.
Ukraine’s government says that there are still some small grass fires, but there are no major open fires still burning. The government says radiation levels in the air in Kyiv and nearby areas are normal.

As many as five billion people, particularly in Africa and South Asia, are likely to face shortages of food and clean water in the coming decades. Hundreds of millions more could face increased risks of severe coastal storms, according to the first-ever model examining how nature and humans can survive together. “I hope no one is shocked that billions of people could be affected by 2050,” says Rebecca Chaplin-Kramer, lead author of the paper Global Modeling Of Nature’s Contributions To People published in Science, who is an ecologist at Stanford University.
Nature sees a frightening sight. Human activity has resulted in the severe change of more than 75 percent of Earth’s land areas and 66 percent of the oceans, putting a million species (物种) at risk of being wiped out, according to the first-ever Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.
Human well-being is dependent upon nature’s contributions, also known as ecosystem services. The new model looked at three of nature’s contributions or services: providing clean water, coastal protection, or crop pollination (授粉). The model shows that the future declines in those services will hit people in Africa and South Asia hardest because they are more directly dependent on nature, says Chaplin-Kramer in an interview. Wealthier countries can buffer the effects on them through imports of food and other basic things that help their people and economy.
We have got a “deeply worrying picture of the social burdens of losing nature,” writes Patricia Balvanera, an ecologist at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in an accompanying article in Science. “What’s really scary is that the model only looked at three of the 18 contributions to human well-being we’ve identified,” says Balvanera in an interview.
12. What does Rebecca Chaplin-Kramer mean by saying so in paragraph 1
A. We’ll lack food and clean water by 2050.
B. We have much dependence on nature.
C. We should face the serious situations.
D. We must prevent severe coastal storms.
13. What can we infer about nature
A. We will surely lose its contributions.
B. Its contributions do harm to humans.
C. It can offer mankind coastal protection.
D. Its services have been in sharp decline.
14. What does the underlined word “buffer” mean in paragraph 3
A. Discover. B. Use. C. Reduce. D. Predict.
15. What’s the text mainly talking about
A. The relationship between nature and humans.
B. Three of nature’s 18 contributions to humans.
C. Human activities and environment protection.
D. The first-ever model assessing mankind’s needs.

The powwow was just fantastic! I could never have imagined how colorful and impressive this morning would be. The dances find the clothes, which were decorated with eagle feathers, attracted me.
I had heard about the powwow dancing in our culture class at Rice University, so I wanted very much to see what the Native Americans would look like in their traditional clothes.
The opening dance was scheduled to start at 7:30 a. m. Since I didn't want to miss any dances, I arrived there on time;however, the dancing began an hour late. How could I have forgotten that Native Americans have a different feeling for time, which I had learned in our class I had intended to go back for my term survey paper as soon as the great one-and-a-half hour event was over!
First, they started to play music with their drums; it was accompanied by their low voices. “Hamma hamma…”. The music was exactly the same as I had heard in the movies.
Then, the Native Americans gradually changed their clothes; they wore their own extremely amazing clothes for the dances, with their hairstyles special and faces multicolored(多颜色的).
Finally, the competitions were started; the participants danced in different groups. They swung their arms and moved their feet in special steps, always to the beat of the music.
After one hour and a half of enthusiastically enjoying them, I took a walk along the food stands to eat some special Native American fried bread and other snacks. And I left that wonderful place for my hotel, having stayed two hours longer than I had first planned to stay.
I will never forget this wonderful morning that gave me a little view into the culture of Native Americans.

Bees and butterflies are active during the daytime. They get a lot of attention for their roles as pollinators(传粉者).But moths(蛾)aren't given the prominence they deserve.
Actually, moths are seen much less often, because they're active at night. Moth bodies often seem furry. Pollen—a yellow powder in the center of most flowers, from one flower sticks to their bodies and falls off when they move to other flowers. Scientists studied insects around nine ponds on farmlands in the United Kingdom. They visited these ponds once a month from March to October.
They studied three groups of insects: moths, bees that normally work together, like honey bees, and flying insects which work alone, such as butterflies. At the ponds, the scientists caught these flying insects and died to collect pollen from their bodies. In all, the scientists checked 838 moths, 632 other insects which work alone, and 1,548 honey bees.
By studying the pollen they collected, the scientists were able to see which plants the insects had visited. The moths had pollen from 47 different kinds of plants, including seven plants that bees don't normally visit. The honey bees had pollen from 46 different kinds of plants. The other insects that work alone had visited 45 different kinds of plants. Richard Walton, who led the study, says that bees usually choose the plants with the most nectar(花蜜)and most pollen. However, moths pollinate many different plants, filling in the gaps left by the daytime pollinators.
Not only do moths pollinate plants they also provide important food for birds and bats.
But, like many other insects, moth numbers have dropped greatly in the last 50 years, mainly because of pesticides and the loss of natural lands. Just like bees and butterflies, moths are worth protecting. "Moths are by no means less important," says Dr. Walton.

A team of well-known developers have built a security tool, Scanguard , which they believe will be the last piece of software consumers will ever need.
Product Manager, David, from ScanGuard, explains, "The software can increase the security immediately by distinguishing any hidden dangers or online tracking cookies. Also, it discovers and removes unnecessary files and cached memory—the files that can make your PC run slow. To have perfect performance and keep your computer secure, schedule the scan to run every 7 days. It roughly takes 10 minutes to fully analyze your system."
"People already love the system. Our plan is to give as many free scan licenses away so that it gains widespread use until we think that's enough for us to start charging. If you own a Windows Computer then you are allowed to have a free security scan. We advise users not to hesitate and try it cautiously and bravely before it's too late. We feel good knowing that we're helping make things faster and more secure for our customers,'' he continues.
The Scanguard free plan will, offer you a version of the software which will monitor your PC in full for threats (威胁),unwanted software or potentially dangerous tracking cookies. If the software finds out threats you can remove them from your system by hand now or pay for it to have the software do the automatic job about them.
Once you have downloaded the software you can also have free licenses for all of your devices, including your,Office & Home PC, Smartphone & even Tablet. It's so convenient!
由第一段“But last Friday, Vostok set another record, this time for its warmest March temperature ever: -18℃, 15℃ warmer than average.”(但上一周五,Vostok创造了另一项记录,这一次是有史以来三月份最热的温度-18℃,比平均温度高15℃。)以及第二段“Other areas in Antarctica were even hotter. A nearby weather station was 37℃ higher than average. Some places here were expected to be as much as 50℃ warmer than normal.”(南极洲的其他地区甚至更热。

由文章最后一段“Scientists explained, this time, the very specific cause for the Arctic heat wave: a “bomb cyclone”, a storm that gathers great strength very quickly. This one formed over the east coast of North America, and headed north. The pressure inside this storm system fell sharply, pulling an atmospheric river of wet warm air toward the North Pole.”(这一次,科学家们解释了北极热浪的具体原因:“炸弹气旋”,一种迅速聚集强大力量的风暴。
