Charles Darwin was born into a family of thinkers. His father was a Fellow of the Royal Society (the elite circle of top British scientists), his mother was the daughter of Josiah Wedgwood, the man who founded the famous Wedgwood Potteries, and his grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, was a famous physician, thinker and philosopher who, like his grandson, spent much time studying the evolution of life.
After a childhood in the town of Shrewsbury, where he was educated at the Grammar School, Darwin went up to Edinburgh University to study medicine and natural history. When he was eighteen, he left Edinburgh and went to Cambridge University, planning to enter the church, but he was more interested in science than in religion and in the end he abandoned theology.
Shortly after graduating from Cambridge, he got a job as a naturalist on the ship H. M. S. Beagle, which was about to start on a scientific and cartographic (地图的) survey of the South American coast. The journey started in December 1831 and was to last almost five years, during which time he collected considerable documentation.
Darwin was struck by the animals of the south seas, particularly by the tortoises he found on the Galapagos Islands, a group of Pacific Islands. The Galapagos tortoises, Darwin observed, differed from island to island, and this, he inferred, showed different forms of evolution, since the animals obviously came from the same origins. Darwin was also struck by the iguanas (蜥蜴) he found, and observed that those which lived in water had heads suitable for finding food among stones, while those that lived on land had a sharper head, more fit for a herbivorous (食草) animal.
Darwin developed his theory of evolution, but it was not until 1859 that he actually published it. It was instantly seen as a great milestone in scientific thought, and attracted violent argument all over Europe. Many found fault in it, and Darwin spent the rest of his life improving his theory in the light of other people’s observations.

Around the globe, there are approximately 60 million people who have been forced to leave their homes to escape war, violence, and persecution (迫害). The majority of them have become internally displaced persons, which means they have fled their homes but are still within their own countries. Others have crossed a border and sought shelter outside of their own countries. They are commonly referred to as refugees.
There’s a lot of confusion regarding the difference between the terms “migrant” and “refugee.” “Migrants” usually refers to people who leave their country for reasons not related to persecution, such as searching for better economic opportunities or leaving drought-stricken areas in search of better circumstances. There are also many people around the world who have been displaced because of natural disasters, food insecurities, and other hardships, but international law, rightly or wrongly, only recognizes those fleeing conflict and violence as refugees.
So what happens when someone flees their country Today, roughly half the world’s refugees are children, some of them unaccompanied by an adult, in a situation that makes them especially vulnerable (易受伤的) to child labor or sexual abuse. Most refugee journeys are long and dangerous with small access to shelter, water, or food. Since the departure can be sudden and unexpected, belongings might be left behind, and people who are getting out of conflict often do not have the required documents, like visas, to board airplanes and legally enter other countries. Financial and political factors can also prevent them from traveling by standard routes. This means they can usually only travel by land or sea, and may need to entrust their lives to smugglers (走私者) to help them cross borders. Whereas some people seek safety with their families, others attempt passage alone and leave their loved ones behind with the hopes of being reunited later. This separation can be unbearably long.
8. Who are refugees according to the text
A. Those leaving their homes to avoid heavy work. B. Those fleeing abroad to improve living conditions.
C. People leaving their homes to escape violent attacks. D. People going abroad to seek economic opportunities.
9. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about refugees
A. They are unsatisfied with their new life. B. They are faced with various misfortunes.
C. It’s hard for them to have a family reunion. D. It’s illegal for them to enter other countries.
10. What is the author’s attitude toward refugees
A. Concerned. B. Indifferent. C. Curious. D. Critical.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Where Is a Refugee’s Shelter B. Where Is a Refugee’s Home
C. What Does It Mean to Be a Refugee D. What Does a Refugee Need to Do
D
An all-girl team of university students from the Philippines has won a hackathon marking UNESCO’s World Engineering for Sustainable Development Day on 4 March. Ghia Luwalhati, Nicole Elizabeth Tan and Reaner Jacqueline Bool from the WONDERPETS team from Batangas State University in the Philippines used Metal Organic Frameworks, which are novel adsorbents (新型吸附剂), to turn recycled plastic bottles into a type of sponge (海绵) that is extremely porous (透水的), making it an effective means of removing pollutants from water. Better still, the sponge can be used again and again.
Organized by the World Federation of Engineering Organizations with UNESCO support, the hackathon shows the inventiveness of young engineers when it comes to solving real-life problems. Some 125 teams from 23 countries around the world competed in the hackathon, with nine teams from six countries making it through to the finals. These countries are Australia, Canada, China, India, Kenya and the Philippines. Some 92% of participants were engineering students.
During the first round of the hackathon, the teams were given 13 days to come up with a sustainable engineering solution to one of three challenges. These solutions display the resourcefulness of future engineers.
All nine finalists have produced short videos to be shown during a 24-hour live streaming event on 4 March, World Engineering Day. The live streaming will begin in Sydney, Australia, at midday local time on 4 March and conclude 24 hours later at 7 pm local time on 4 March in San José, Costa Rica.
The competition was judged by 40 engineers from 16 countries in the preliminary round and, in the final round, by six judges from UNESCO, Engineers Without Borders, the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies, the International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists, the Global Engineering Deans Council and the International Engineering Alliance.
World Engineering Day was first celebrated in 2020. This annual UNESCO celebration was established to raise awareness of the basic role that engineering plays in cutting down the impact of climate change and advancing sustainable development.

Indonesian university student Tyas Sisianindita spends about eight hours a day on her phone. That time includes watching videos, chatting with friends and using social media. "At night, when I can't sleep, I can use my phone for up to five hours," she said, noting she checks her phone countless times from morning until night. She even checks it while in class.
Tyas goes to the University of Indonesia, where a team of students recently developed a device meant to fight phone addiction. The students spent three months creating the device, which can help internet users like Tyas diminish time they spend looking at their phones.
Inventor Irfan Budi Satria led the development team. The device is called “Nettox", which combines the words “internet" and "detox (排毒)". Users wear it on their arm. The device has a sensor that measures hemoglobin (红蛋白) oxygen levels and changes to the heart rate called HRV. Studies have found that using a mobile phone for long hours can lower HRV levels. The Nettox device makes a sound when HRV and blood oxygen levels fall, which reminds wearers to stop using their phones.
For people between the ages of 18 and 25, the HRV should stay above 60. At a recent trial, Tyas' HRV reading was 44.
Internet addiction is a growing social issue in Indonesia. In October, two teenagers were treated for their addiction to internet gaming, media reported.
Irfan Budi Satria's team is working to improve Nettox's accuracy. HRV readings can change depending on whether the user is a man or woman, and what their body shape and health conditions are.
The team aims to get a patent for their invention with the university by next year. Irfan says Nettox is for people already trying to change their behavior. "Our goal is to help people who want to free themselves from internet addiction" he said.

When the island of Singapore became an independent country in 1965, it had few friends and even fewer natural resources. How did it become one of the world's great trading and financial centers The strategy, explained Lee Kuan Yew, its first prime minister, was "to develop Singapore's only available natural resource: its people".
Today Singapore's education system is considered the best in the world. The graduates of its best schools can be found scattered around the world's finest universities.
The island-state has much to teach the world. But other countries are reluctant (不情愿) pupils. One reason is that Singapore favors traditional method, with teachers leading the class. That seems not useful for children to learn for themselves.
Yet Singapore shows that academic brilliance need not come at the expense of personal skills. In 2015 Singaporean students also came first in a new PISA ranking designed to look at cooperative problem-solving, scoring even better than they did in reading and science. They are also reported to be happy. Not content with its achievements, Singapore is now introducing reforms to improve creativity and reduce stress. This is a gradual education reform - the first of three lessons that Singapore offers the rest of the world.
The second lesson is to accept Singapore's distinctive approach to teaching maths. It emphasizes a narrower but deeper curriculum, and seeks to ensure that a whole class progresses through the syllabus (教学大纲). Struggling students get compulsory extra lessons to help them keep up.
The third and most important lesson is to focus on developing excellent teachers. In Singapore, they get 100 hours of training a year to keep up to date with the latest techniques. The government pays them well, too.
The system is hardly faultless. Other countries might wish to avoid Singapore's dividing of high — and low-achievers into separate schools from the age of 12, which contributes to stress about exams. That is a pity. Education would be much better if more countries copied Singapore's homework.
28. What did Lee Kuan Yew think contributed to Singapore's great development
A. Trading with other countries. B. Making full use of its people.
C. Exploiting its natural resources. D. Introducing all kinds of talents.
29. Why are other countries unwilling to learn from Singaporean
A. Its system is too advanced. B. Its method, seems not to be up to date.
C. Their students are too independent. D. They are lack of challenging teachers.
30. What's the key lesson of Singapore's education according to the text
A. Sticking to quick reforms. B. Adopting different syllabuses.
C. Aiming at teachers' further training. D. Helping struggling students catch up.
31. What's the author's attitude to Singapore's education on the whole
A. Supportive. B. Worried. C. Subjective. D. Uncertain.

Many cars in advertisements, exhibits and at car sales in the United States are red, blue or green —but almost 75 percent of new cars sold in the United States are black, white, silver or gray.
Jackson is a reporter who writes about cars. He says the car colors Americans choose do not show dirt as much as the colors of other cars. He says that means the owners wash their cars less, saving money. And he notes some areas that are suffering from water shortages do not permit people to wash their cars often, if at all.
Dan Benton works for a company called Axalta, which makes supplies for international car makers. He says when white cars are sold by their owners, they often sell for higher amounts than cars of other colors. And he notes that white cars “absorb less energy" than cars of other colors. This means temperatures inside them are lower in warmer areas.
Dan Benton also says research at Monash University in Australia suggests that there is a lower risk of crashes during the day for white cars compared with darker ones.
Axalta says about 11 percent of cars sold in North America are red and 8 percent are blue. In South America, 10 percent of new cars sold are red.
Car buyers in other countries also like white. Jane Harrington works for PPG Industries, a company that makes paint for cars. She said in China, buyers say white makes a small car look bigger.
Green has become less popular. Dan Benton notes that in the mid 1990s, “green was the most popular color in North America. Today, green is hard to find."
Sometime in the future, people may not have to choose the color of their car - technology may let owners change their car's paint color anytime.
32. According to Jackson, Americans favor cars of black mostly because they________.
A. stand washing B. don't look dirty
C. are environmentally friendly D. aren't in need of cleaning often
33. What does the underlined word "they" in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. White cars. B. Black cars. C. Car sellers. D. Car makers.
34. Who thinks that white seems to add the inside space of a car
A. Dan Benton. B. Jane Harrington. C. Australians. D. Chinese.
35. What could be the most suitable title for the text
A. Cares Are Different in Style
B. Colors Increase a Car's Popularity
C. What Are the Colors of Choice for Cars
D. What Type of Car Sells Well in the Market

Manny Abreu pratices Benjamin Franklin's famous saying. “If you want something done, ask a busy person.”
Throughout his four years at Kellenberg Memorial High School in the US. Abreu made community service, an important part of his life. “I don't know where he finds the time to do everything.” said Erin Ronan, Alreu's math teacher. “He is truly a class act.”
As an honored student, Abreu, 18, took part in different voluntary activities after school, during weekends and summer holidays. These included helping staff at the public library, doing landscape work at kellenberg, and serving customers at a local restaurant.
But faced with a limited number of hours in a day, Abreu left his library job last summer to start working as an emergency medical technician—a role that fits his passion for making a difference in other people's lives.
“My appreciation for service has guided me into giving back,” said Abreu, who is setting his sights on becoming a doctor. “It's such a win-win feeling to help someone in need.”
St Martin de Porres Marianist School also benefited from Abreu's help. Children of all ages gathered in New York City recently for the International Toy Fair. Hidden among already popular toys were new, high-tech educational products. Toymakers are working to create products for improving a child's emotional intelligence. These toys reportedly not only help raise intelligence in children, but also their emotional quotient, or EQ(情商).
At the toy fair, companies showed off their products.
PleIQ is a set of plastic toy blocks. It uses augmented(增强的)reality technology to teach words, numbers and other things. Edison Durán, the company director, showed people at the toy fair how virtual images appear on the blocks when they are held in front of a tablet camera. Intelligence includes intrapersonal skills(processing information within one's mind)and interpersonal skills(dealing with other people). Durán said PleIQ builds on both by having children act as teachers or guides to a companion character.
Karen Hu presented an educational robot called Woobo. The robot comes programmed with educational games and activities. Children use its touch screen face to get them started. Toys that work as companions also aid in social development. Hu described how the robot can help a child who suffers from autism(自闭症). "The child can communicate with Woobo and follow some of the instructions Woobo is giving because he thinks of this as a companion instead of a parent or someone else telling him to do certain things."
Jonathan Erickson, the sales director, showed off a board game called "Q"s Race to the Top. "Kevin Chaja said the game got his 4-year-old daughter to open up. "The biggest thing is her talking. And that's the key of all this—getting her feelings expressed out. Like, 'Hey, what does it feel like to be sad '"
It remains to be seen whether a game or toy can improve emotional intelligence. But toymakers are doing what they can to help parents in their efforts to raise well-rounded children.
8. What does the underlined word "both" in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Teachers and guides.
B. Intelligence and emotional quotient.
C. Reality technology and virtual image.

10. What is Kevin Chaja's attitude to "Q's Race to the Top"
A. Cautious. B. Favorable.
C. Uncertain. D. Doubtful.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. International Toy Fair Ended B. Raising Kids Needs New Ways
C. Toys Help Make Children Smart D. Toymakers Try to Train Parents

Modern agriculture and its ability to feed billions of people may be among humanity’s greatest successes. However, it comes with hidden costs. For example, have you ever considered how much water is needed to provide you with a steak or a salad It may surprise you.
In a recent study published in the journal Nutrients, scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization(CSIRO), Australia's national science organization, took a close look at the diets of 9,341 adult Australians—specifically, their “water-scarcity footprints(水消耗足迹)”.
It turned out that a sweet tooth not only adds to our waistlines(腰围) but also stresses our water resources. The water-scarcity footprint is a widely recognized measurement of water consumption. First, it counts the liters of water you used. Then, it looks at the place where the water was used. The more lacking water is in your area, the larger your water-scarcity footprint.
The scientists found that the average Australian's diet had a water-scarcity footprint of 362 liters per day. Snacks—cookies, cakes and alcohol—accounted for 25 percent of the water-scarcity footprint. The research also included a glass of wine(41 liters), a single serving of potato chips(23 liters), and a small bar of milk chocolate(21 liters).
Not surprisingly cutting out snacks would be the N0.1 priority if you wanted to lower your own water-scarcity footprint.
Earth's surface is 70 percent water, but only 2.5 percent of that can be used for drinking or farming. By 2030, a world of about 8.6 billion people will need 35 percent more water, 40 percent more energy, and 50 percent more food, according to the United States National Intelligence Council. So, we need to watch what we eat, not just for our personal health but for the health of our societies.
12. What did the recent study closely focus on
A. Modern agriculture. B. Average Australians.
C. Water resources. D. Water-scarcity footprints.
13. What did scientists from CSIRO find in their study
A. Sweet teeth lead to thin waistlines.
B. Australians' diets are mainly made up of snacks.
C. The water-scarcity fooprint is a measurement of saving water.
D. Lacking water in our area means a larger water-scarcity footprint.
14. What does the underlined part “the N0.1 priority” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. the least important thing B. the least impossible thing
C. something to be done first D. something to be prevented first
15. What does the last paragraph intend to tell us
A. Take care of our diets. B. Protect our drinking water.
C. Make good use of energy. D. Produce more healthy food.

Whereas some people seek safety with their families, others attempt passage alone and leave their loved ones behind with the hopes of being reunited later.(今天,世界上大约一半的难民是儿童,其中一些人没有成年人陪伴,这种情况使他们特别容易成为童工或性虐待的对象。 故选A。
