Drivers slowed down to admire what I was doing. “Good work, love,” one man yelled out. It was the start of the state’s first lockdown and I used my spare time to paint murals (壁画).
I’d chosen sunflowers as my subject. “They’re bright, colorful but best of all, they turn their face to the sun,” I told people. It was a fitting reminder that as much of the world faced uncertainty over this pandemic we mustn’t give up hope, either. And my colorful creations soon started turning heads.
“I want one,” people told me, inviting me to their local laneway. Several business owners also got in touch hoping I could revive their property.
I paid for all the paints myself but soon I started finding bunches of sunflowers with thank you notes from complete strangers on my doorstep. Honestly, making money was never my intention. I just wanted to bring the community together.
Soon, people from across the city were hanging out in my suburb wanting selfies(自拍) with the sunflowers. Before long, I attracted some die-hard fans.
One of my most moving experiences was when I was approached by friends of a woman whose son had recently passed away.“Would you paint her a mural as a surprise ” they asked. For me, there was no question. And when the woman returned to see the transformation outside her home, she was moved to tears. “It’s the most beautiful thing,” she choked.
People from all over my country have since contacted me wanting my work, and while I’d love to add more sunflowers across the country, it’s great to know that I found a way of brightening up my town in the dark times.

Time was, being called “nerd (书呆子)” was a bad thing.
That is happily different now, says Sarah Jane, director at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, which is home to the exhibit “Obsessed: The Art of Nerd-dom” through March 15. “I think the majority of my friends are nerdier than I am,” she said, “and I mean that in a ‘my friends are cooler than I am’ kind of way.”
Jane said the rise of the Internet certainly helped blossom, connecting people with common interests across geographies. Now, it’s almost mainstream—exhibitions of nerd culture fill convention halls, comic book superheroes and science fiction stories are the focus of blockbuster movies, and more.
“It has made being a nerd less of an isolating experience, and more of a community experience because you’re connecting with other people who have that shared interest,” she said.
Holladay, the co-curator (副馆长), spoke up in a meeting about what the coming exhibition season would look like.“I knew of another nerdy exhibition that had happened in LA recently... and I just thought ‘you know, I bet there are nerdy artists on the (Olympic) Peninsula and in Washington who have really quality work, where the subject matter might not fit into most exhibits’,” she said.
And she wasn’t surprised when they received plenty of recommendations.“My theory was that nerds are everywhere,” she said. “Once I got in touch with the right people, everyone was coming out of the woodwork.”
The exhibit features comic art, and things like Pokemon cards arranged in a collage (拼贴画). One work invites viewers to imagine the unique talents and abilities they have as superpowers they bring to the world. Holladay says the evolution of the idea of nerd culture has been positive over the past several years.
28. What is Sarah Jane’s attitude towards “nerds”

B. The nerd culture is always evolving positively.
C. Many unusual exhibitions are scheduled.
D. Another different culture appears recently.

SpaceX, a private company, has put 60 Starlink communication satellites into orbit, bringing the total circling Earth to 180. They will bring internet access to underserved areas of the world. But it seems they also mess with telescopes.
When the satellites pass through a telescope’s field of view, they create bright streaks(条痕) that cut through images of the sky, hiding anything that might be behind them and pouring so much light into the telescope that it causes some observations unusable.
“What surprised everyone - the astronomy community and SpaceX - was how bright the satellites are”, said anxiously space experts. Actually SpaceX did talk about the issue elsewhere. The problem for astronomers doesn’t end with SpaceX. Blue Origin, One Web and Amazon plan to launch thousands of communications satellites in the coming years.
In an effort to ease astronomers’ fears, SpaceX is testing one satellite that is a bit different from the others. It was included in the most recent launch and is partially coated in a dark material to make it less shiny and so less visible in telescope images. We don’t have any data yet on whether the coating is working as intended.
Once the satellites are in space, there is no backtracking. While companies like SpaceX do need approval from regulatory bodies(监察机构) for each launch, there is no rule that prevents them from launching an unlimited number of satellites.
“We have to rely on firms such as SpaceX voluntarily cooperating with astronomers to attempt to keep the impacts of their satellite constellations (卫星星座) as low as possible.” said space experts.
With more than 1,500 Starlink satellites scheduled for launch in the near future, that cooperation will need to be speedy if it is going to make any difference.
32. Why does SpaceX launch so many communication satellites
A. To expand internet services worldwide.
B. To make users surf the Internet quickly.
C. To disturb the operation of telescopes.
D. To further present space research.
33. What are space experts worried
Satellites are too shiny to be seen.
Satellites occupy the area of telescopes.
Too many satellites move in outer space.
The normal use of the telescopes is affected.
34. What can be inferred from the passage
A. The number of satellite launches will decrease.
B. Coated satellites can effectively weaken brightness.
C. The regulations of satellite launching are not powerful.
D. SpaceX’s cooperation with astronomers remains to be seen.
35. What is probably the best title for the passage
Troubles Made by Satellites
Satellites Threatening Astronomers
SpaceX and Its Future Starlink Plan
Cooperation with Astronomy Community

I rescued my little Foxy several years ago. I wasn’t looking for her, but she just crawled up onto my lap and went to sleep, so I took her home. She spent the night with her head on my pillow, and I knew she belonged with me.
I was her world. She didn’t really like other people until I met my wife-to-be. The day Angelika came over to visit for the first time was the the last time Foxy was truly my dog. She abandoned me for the love of a tender woman, and who can blame her I would have done the same. Then Angelika and I got married, and we became a happy family.
The three of us always walk together through our village from the hills to the lake. We get exercise and have fun because Foxy enjoys her walks and strolls through the neighbourhood like a 10-pound prize pony (马驹).
How sweet and lovely, you say, but there is a dark side to the little furball! Foxy is now a one-woman dog-she has totally bonded (建立关系) with my wife and won’t go for a walk at all if Angelika is out. She just lies in her bed by the window waiting for her angel to walk through the door, and I have to tell you, I feel a little rejected. But it’s pretty cute.
I understand animal bonding. My therapy dog, Mercy, was with me for over a decade, and we were a total item. In fact, it wasn’t until Mercy died that I decided to remarry. That’s how much unconditional love she gave me.
Now my wife is getting to experience that kind of bond for the first time. Young or old, big or little, when your dog finds you, it’s an amazing experience, and the love you feel just makes your life sweeter.
When you adopt an animal, remember that it’s a lifetime commitment. And if your pet falls for your other half, just enjoy watching the love.

All primary and secondary school students in China will, in principle, be banned from bringing mobile phones to school, the Ministry of Education announced in early February.
Parents will now need to submit a written application if their child needs to bring a mobile phone to school the ministry said in a notice. In such cases, the student should hand the cellphone to the school for custody during school time, it added.
No cellphones will be allowed in classrooms, the notice said. Schools should not assign or ask students to do homework via cellphones and they should set up teacher hot lines and public phones for communication between parents and students, it added.
The new measure, aimed at protecting students’ eyesight, making sure they focus on study and preventing them from becoming addicted to the Internet and online games, has sparked heated debate among parents over the practicality of implementation and the need for their children to keep up pace with phone-centered technological advances in everyday life.
Dai Hanyang, a high school student in Changsha, Hunan Province, says, “I am not good at self-discipline and I could not help but check WeChat messages or moments, so not having my cell phone with me helps me focus on studying.”
Zhang Ting, the mother of a fourth grader in Beijing, says she supports the ban. “For primary school students, the knowledge found in books is enough. Nowadays, information is being carried on digital channels, but the content remains the same,” Zhang says. “Fragmented (碎片化的)and overloaded information online is not better than knowledge gained from books.”
The misuse of mobile phones can bring a series of health problems, including memory loss, sleep disorder and eyesight deterioration (退化). It’s already common practice worldwide to limit students’ use of mobile phones in primary and secondary schools.

Avantium, a renewable chemical company based in the Netherlands, plans to start making plastics from plant sugars rather than fossil fuels, according to The Guardian. Plant sugars from wheat, beets and corn will be used to produce the plant plastic.
“This plastic has very attractive sustainability certificate because it uses no fossil fuels, and can be recycled— but would also break down in nature much faster than normal plastics do,” said Tom Van Aken, Avantium’s chief executive. The plant plastic would break down within a year using a composter or a few years longer under normal outdoor conditions according to trials.

Superb Performance From Affordable Digital Hearing Aid
Chicago Dr. Cherukuri has invented a medical-grade, ALL-DIGITAL,affordable hearing aid.
He knew that untreated hearing loss could lead to depression, social isolation, anxiety, and symptoms consistent with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. In his practice he knew that many of his patients would benefit from new digital hearing aids but many couldn’t afford the expense, which is not generally covered by Medicare and most private health insurance policies.
Same Technology as $ 3,500 Hearing Aids
He evaluated all the high-priced digital hearing aids on the market and then created his own affordable version-called MD Hearing Aid AIR for its virtually invisible, light weight appearance. This doctor-designed digital hearing aid delivers clear sound all day long and the soft flexible ear domes are so comfortable that you won’t realize you are wearing them.
This new digital hearing aid is packed with the features of its $3,500 competitors at a small part of the cost. Now most people with hearing loss are able to enjoy crystal clear, natural sound-in a crowd, on the phone, in the wind --without “whistling” and annoying background noise.
Try it at Home with a 45-Day Risk-Free Trial
Of course, hearing is believing, and we invite you to try it for yourself with our RISK-FREE 45-day home trial. If you are not completely satisfied, simply return it within that time period for a full refund of your purchase price.

Do you prefer reading an e-book or a physical version It might be a surprise, but for most people, old school print on paper still wins.
Publishers of books in all formats made almost $26 billion in revenue (收益) last year in the U.S., with print making up $22.6 billion and e-books taking $2.04 billion, according to the Association of American Publishers’ annual report 2018. Those figures include trade and educational books, as well as fiction.
While digital media has developed quickly, people still love to own physical books, according to Meryl Halls, managing director of the Booksellers’ Association in the U.K. “I think the e-book bubble has burst somewhat. Sales are flattening off. The physical objects are attractive.” she said.
People love to display their books, Hall added. “The book lover loves to have a record of what they have read. It’s about signaling to the rest of the world and about decorating your home, because people want to use it to indicate something about themselves.” And for Halls, there is also a desire to escape the screen. Part of the reason is that it’s harder to have an emotional relationship with what you’re reading if it’s on an e-reader.
As for the future of books all formats will continue to be in demand, says Jacks Thomas, director of the London Book Fair. “People always need knowledge and people always need stories, so from that point of view, the book industry, in whatever format, has a strong future,” she says.

A. Its future promises to be good. B. Books won’t be needed.
C. No different formats coexist. D. Digital media will replace physical books.
C
There are only a few truly pleasant smells to wake up to in the morning. It might be the aroma of freshly baked bread, or the scent of your partner’s freshly brushed teeth - but for me, it’s the smell of freshly cooked coffee. Just a sniff of it makes me jump out of bed and rush to the kitchen for a gulp(大口) of the hot black liquid.
I also know the experience when I walk into a cafe for my double espresso(浓缩咖啡) or flat white, my mouth begins to water in advance. Although it’s really the caffeine hit I’m after, it’s the smell that makes me feel good.
However, this feeling sometimes turns to disappointment when I actually start drinking my hot coffee - the taste just doesn’t match the smell. This is particularly the case when I order a coffee to go in a tall paper cup and sip the liquid through a hole in the lid. Yes, it’s convenient, but is it really the right way to appreciate it
Tim Hayward, a food writer and coffee shop owner, describes this process as “strange”. He says, “You walk into the coffee shop, you get the smell, but when you actually take the drink out, you are drinking it from something that is designed to deliver the hot liquid directly past your tongue, but stop any smell coming up to your nose.”
As well as removing the smell, takeaway coffee cups create a lot of waste and a vast majority of them still don’t get recycled. In 2011, it was estimated that 2.5 billion coffee cups were thrown away each year in the UK, and that figure is likely to be higher now. So maybe now is the time to really wake up and smell the coffee by drinking from a cup or mug in a cafe, chatting with friends and saving the planet!
28. From the first two paragraphs we know ________.
A. the author loves coffee alone
B. the smell of coffee is pleasant
C. people smell one scent at a time
D. smells are used to wake up people
29. What sometimes disappoints the author when drinking coffee
A. The way to enjoy coffee.
B. Coffee doesn’t taste tasty.
C. No partner shares coffee with him.
D. The type of coffee he likes isn’t available.
30. What made Tim Hayward feel strange?
A. The smell of coffee.
B. Hot coffee without smell.
C. Treating coffee just as hot liquid.
D. Drinking coffee in the coffee shop.
31. What can be implied in the last paragraph
A. People recycle coffee regularly.
B. Takeaway coffee is of high quality.
C. Pollution caused by coffee cups is growing.
D. A cup or mug is widely used for drinking coffee.
D
Today we know Antarctica as an extreme environment containing ice and snow But new research provides evidence that the area was very different in the past.
The evidence was found inside a piece of earth sediment(沉积物) collected by researchers from a depth of about 30 meters below the ocean floor off the coast of Antarctica. In the sediment, they found forest soil estimated to be about 90 million years old. This would have been in the Cretaceous Period, when dinosaurs were the main land animals.
Johann Klages is a geologist, working in the Institute's Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research in Germany. He said an examination showed that the material formed on land, not in the ocean.
The researchers estimate that the area – about 900 kilometers from the South Pole – had average yearly temperatures of about 12 to 13 degrees Celsius. During the warmest summer months, average temperatures likely reached between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. The average yearly temperature in that area is about 40 degrees below zero Celsius.
The examination results showed “a dense network of roots that spread through the entire soil layer,” the Helmholtz Center said in a statement.
The dark brownish-gray soil included fine dirt particles and hard clay, as well as substances linked to at least 65 different kinds of plants, the study found. Klages put that the plants included trees, ferns and flowering plants and while no animal remains were found, there were likely dinosaurs, flying reptiles and many insects in the environment.
The researchers said that the rainforest environment in Antarctica was especially surprising because each year, the area experiences a four-month polar night when there is no sunlight to fuel plant life.
32. According to the passage, we can learn that ________.
A. dinosaurs were from Antarctica
B. Antarctica was always extremely cold
C. the ocean floor is made up of sediment
D. the area has been experiencing climate changes
33. What surprised the researchers
A. No animals left.
B. No fertilizer to fuel plants.
C. Roots spreading through the soil.
D. The rainforest experiencing polar night.
34. Which column is the passage probably from
A. Science. B. Entertainment. C. Society. D. Fiction.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Antarctica, Once a Warm Rainforest
B. Earth Sediment Found in Antarctica
C. Antarctica - an Extreme Environment
D. New Antarctica Found by Researchers
